It’s the way it always is with Netflix. You get a ton of new movies and TV shows every month, but you also lose a bunch of stuff, too, as the licensing agreements expire and they hop over to another streaming platform. September will be no different in that regard, either, as the company has now announced a hefty list of titles that are set to make their exit over the coming weeks.
As always, the biggest bulk of departures will go down at the end of the month, but the days leading up to then will also see some notable movies and TV shows vanish from the site, too. And below, you can see the full list of what Netflix will be losing in September.

Everyone enjoys a brief opening paragraph, so why don't we spend it listing all the things that "Dark Places," from director Gilles Paquet-Brenner ("Sarah's Key"), gets right. Its cast is undoubtedly committed, particularly a convincingly grimy Charlize Theron, and an enjoyably off-the-leash Chloe Grace Moretz, though it feels like they signed on to different films, and continued under that misapprehension all the way through shooting. Christina Hendricks is decent in a frumpy role that is sold from under her by the film's last-act twists. Nicholas Hoult, alongside his "Mad Max: Fury Road" co-star, has little to do (zero mouth-spraying), while Tye Sheridan again proves he's unsurpassable in the surly, misunderstood adolescent stakes, though even his talents cannot convince us he'll grow up to be Corey Stoll. The Barry Ackroyd photography is unobjectionably gritty. Eyelines match. It's all screamingly competent. Read More: Watch: Charlize Theron, Nicholas...

Charlize Theron is forced to solve a horrific family mystery in the trailer for Dark Places.
The thriller is a film adaptation of a novel by Gone Girl's Gillian Flynn, with Sarah's Key director Gilles Paquet-Brenner behind the lens.
Libby Day (Theron) has been haunted by the murder of her mother and sisters for her entire life, especially since her brother (Tye Sheridan) was convicted of the massacre.
Now an adult, Libby is contacted by a group of amateur investigators known as the The Kill Club, who believe that a satanic cult could actually have been responsible for the murders.
Theron spoke about the troubling subject matter of Dark Places earlier in the year, revealing that it brought back memories of her own mother Gerda shooting and killing her abusive father Charles in an act of self-defence back in 1991.
"I did experience a very traumatic experience, an event, in my life.

On paper, an ensemble cast including Charlize Theron, Corey Stoll, Tye Sheridan, Chloë Grace Moretz, Nicholas Hoult, Sterling Jerins and Christina Hendricks starring in an adaptation of a best-selling thriller by "Gone Girl" author Gillian Flynn seems like a guaranteed success. At this point I have no real idea why Dark Places doesn't have a domestic release date in place (the film opens in France this weekend). It's got a stellar cast and is based on the quite good book by Gillian Flynn. While the material isn't up to the level of Gone Girl's insightful skewering of the cool girl syndrome, it's a highly functional crime thriller. I haven't seen director Gilles Paquet-Brenner's film Sarah's Key, but it was well reviewed. And in general I think it's poor form to speculate on a film's quality in these distribution situations because they often have little to do with each other. So what's the deal? Don't ask me. I thought the trailer was serviceable, and this new clip is very much in that vein. Functional, without hitting that Gone Girl level of quality. It makes the interesting choice to introduce the...

So... what happened? Even before we got our first look at David Fincher's "Gone Girl," in late 2013 that other Gillian Flynn adaptation, "Dark Places," released its first image. And then a deafening silence followed. Along the way, cult/arthouse distributors A24 picked up the movie, and it was pretty much assumed that "Gone Girl" and "Dark Places" would stay out of each other's way. We didn't expect that the picture would suddenly open up overseas with little in the way of advance fanfare, but that's right, in just one month "Dark Places" arrives in France. A24 may finally be in the Oscar business with "A Most Violent Year" this season, but the indie distributor is stepping things up even more by getting into the Gillian Flynn business. It's rare when a film adaptation lives up the book it was based on so with that in mind I have compiled a list of 40 books that have been adapted for the big screen that we can expect to see in theaters this year. This includes two books from Gillian Flynn, young adult adaptations of work by Veronica Roth, Suzanne Collins and James Dashner, a short story from Dennis Lehane, a Nick Hornby adaptation, and an adaptation written by Nick Hornby, a new John le Carre adaptation and a prequel to the stories written by Tom Clancy as well as a couple comics and graphic novel adaptations from the likes of Frank Miller and Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Alexander O. Smith. I've added everything I could think of and while I'm sure I missed a few, please forgive me and hopefully you'll find something that appeals to your taste on the list.

Warm Bodies star Nicholas Hoult seems to be doing very well for himself as a young actor! The guy keeps landing himself good roles. He's the most recent actor to join Chloe Moretz and Charlize Theron in the psycho thriller Dark Places.
The movie is being directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah's Key) from a script that he wrote based on the book by Gillian Flynn. Nicholas Hoult is the latest name to join the cast of the upcoming Dark Places, based on the novel by Gillian Flynn. Deadline reports that the Jack the Giant Slayer star will join the previously-announced Charlize Theron and Chloe Moretz in the Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah's Key) film.
The book, published in 2010, is officially described as follows...
I have a meanness inside me, real as an organ.
Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in “The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.” As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived–and famously testified that her fifteen-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who’ve long forgotten her.

It looks like Kick-Ass star Chloe Moretz will be joining Charlize Theron in the psychological thriller Dark Places. The movie is being directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah's Key) from a script that he wrote based on the book by Gillian Flynn. Moretz is in talks to play a character named Diondra in the story which revolves around a woman who, at the age of 7, survived the massacre of her family and testified against her brother as the murderer. Twenty-five years later, the Kill Club, a secret-society obsessed with solving notorious crimes, bring her to question and confront her for the truth of what took place that day.
Moretz is a fantastic young actress that has a great career ahead of her. This sounds like it could be a great project for her to take on. Here's a full description of the story.

Oscar winner Charlize Theron has gone to some dark places onscreen before (notably in "Monster"), and now she'll star in the film adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s bestseller "Dark Places." Gilles Paquet-Brenner ("Sarah's Key," "Pretty Things") will write and direct the film, in which Theron will play Libby Day, a woman who -- when she was only 7 -- was the sole survivor of a family massacre seemingly at the hands of her brother. She had testified against him, and 25 years later, is confronted by a criminal rights advocacy group who force her to recount her story in order to uncover a hidden truth. ...

1.) This rumor started back in December, but Paramount has confirmed that Kristen Wiig has officially joined the cast of Anchorman: The Legend Continues. While there is plenty of speculation about the size of her role and the character she might play, all the studio would confirm is that she's playing a "new role." Either way, it's hard not to get excited about the pairing after Wiig and Will Ferrell absolutely crushed it at the Golden Globes. Deadline 2.) Colin Farrell is nearing a deal to join Anthony Hopkins in the supernatural thriller Solace from Brazilian director Alfonso Poyart (Two Rabbits). Farrell would play a serial killer, while Hopkins will play a reclusive doctor with special abilities brought out of retirement by an FBI agent to help solve the series of grisly murders. It was seven years ago that Amy Adams broke out in "Junebug" and she hasn't looked back since. Showing that she can move from drama to comedy to romance with ease, the actress has proven to be one of the most talented and versatile of her generation. Need evidence? Watch "The Fighter" and then "The Muppets." Or maybe here three Oscar nominations will be enough to convince you. At any rate, 2012 is shaping up to be banner year for Adams. "On The Road" premieres in Cannes next week, she's been busy lensing "Trouble With The Curve" alongside a guy named Clint Eastwood, later this year she'll be working with Spike Jonze on his untitled romance and then there's a movie called "The Master" you might have heard of opening this fall. And now, she's putting another project on the table.

The lovely and talented Amy Adams will soon be best known to audiences as Lois Lane in Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman film Man of Steel, but the generally perky actress has just signed on for a movie that will take her far from Metropolis and closer to Smallville (geographically, anyway). Deadline reports that Adams will play the lead in Dark Places, a story about a young girl in Kansas who survives a massacre of her family, testifies against her brother as the murderer, and is visited 25 years later by a secret society that claims her brother is innocent. It was a big weekend for spoofing familiar concepts with 21 Jump Street filling movie houses and the only other top ten newbie Casa De Mi Padre, doing a parodic riff on Mexican movies starring Will Ferrell and everyone's favorite Mexican tag team: Gael García Bernal & Diego Luna. Would love to hear from anyone who saw the latter in the comments since this one slipped me by and Ggb is an old favorite. (My review of 21 Jump Street will be up tomorrow evening.)
Top Ten (Estimates)
01 21 Jump Street $35 new in wide release
02 The Lorax $22.8 (cum. $158.4)
03 John Carter $13.5 (cum. $53.1) [Review and Taylor Kitsch Beefcake]
04 Project X $4 (cum. $48.1)
05 A Thousand Words $3.7 (cum. $12.1)
06 Act Of Valor $3.6 (cum. $62.3)
07 Safe House $2.8 (cum. $120.2)
08 Journey 2 The Mysterious Island $2.4 (cum. $95)
09 Casa De Mi Padre $2.2 new in limited release
10 This Means War $2.1 (cum. $50.5)
Another Milestone for A Separation
Asgar Farhadi's Oscar winner A Separation (our favorite of 2011) continues its incredible theatrical run passing the 5 million mark.

Agnieszka Holland's film uses a fragment of the Holocaust story to hint at its enormity
Claude Lanzmann's famous proscription against ever tackling the Holocaust in a purely representational way – because how can one honestly, decently recreate the almost unimaginable without cheapening or faking it? – still casts a shadow over the whole genre three decades after the release of his documentary Shoah. I wish more people would listen to him. His polar opposite is Steven Spielberg, and Schindler's List neatly embodies all Lanzmann's doubts. The documentary favours long takes, no heroes, and no war-crime footage whatsoever. The feature shows it all: random executions, gas chambers, the anguish of the doomed, but undercuts it all with a Spielbergian hunger for uplift and good guys.

Penelope Ann Miller, The Artist As mentioned in my previous post, French president Nicolas Sarkozy has named Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company (TWC), a recipient of the 2012 Légion d'Honneur, or Legion of Honor. The honor is "in recognition of Weinstein’s contributions to cinema and his decades of work producing some of the most highly regarded films of our time," according to a TWC press release. Weinstein will be inducted with the rank of Chevalier. Although Sarkozy himself nominated Weinstein back in late July 2011, the nomination was made public only today, five days after the Weinstein Company-distributed The Artist, a French production directed by Michel Hazanavicius, won five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor (Jean Dujardin). As per the TWC press release, Weinstein had requested that the honor be kept private until now "to avoid any conflict of interest" with his company's Academy Award campaign for The Artist.

Weinstein's New Label, Radius-twc, Acquires Latest Nicolas Winding Refn / Ryan Gosling Collaboration
The Weinstein Company's new label, Radius-twc, has nabbed U.S. rights to "Only God Forgives," the latest from "Drive" director Nicolas Winding Refn that sees him re-teaming with that film's star, Ryan Gosling. Kirstin Scott Thomas ("Sarah's Key") and Tom Burke ("Cheri") also star in the crime thriller. Those scared off by the violence in "Drive" should probably steer clear of Refn's latest. As he told Indiewire in Cannes, before winning Best Director over Terrence Malick, Pedro Almodovar and Lars von Trier, "["Only God Forgives"] has some violence… and then a lot of violence."
