Dev Patel's feature directorial debut "Monkey Man" hit the ground running with its world premiere at South By Southwest ... but before the movie about an underground brawler hell-bent on revenge became a reality, the actor-turned-filmmaker says it was an idea he was hesitant to bring to life himself. /Film's Ryan Scott is attending SXSW in Austin this week, where Patel spoke about how he went from an actor and co-writer on the project to the man behind the camera.
"I was just trying to find a way to tell this story," Patel explained. "I wanted it out there. Originally, I hired a friend to write it." Paul Angunawela ("Keith Lemon: The Film") and John Collee ("Hotel Mumbai") are both credited as co-writers on the final product, but initially, Patel says two of them worked on it during an intense year-long process. Belated cinema adventure for Tate’s sketch-show character and her grandson Matthew Horne is depressingly terrible
There are some British films which are basically the convenience-store sandwich of big-screen entertainment. Cinema’s equivalent of the 24-hour-garage tuna mayo pitta bread. And that, sadly, is the case with The Nan Movie, a truly horrendous and depressing film about Catherine Tate’s sweary old-lady character from her sketch show, in a storyline stretched out to a brutal hour and a half.
It arrives in UK cinemas with no fanfare and an uneasy lack of clarity about who the director is supposed to be. Some official listings give it as former Donmar Warehouse artistic director Josie Rourke and some say Tate herself, but there’s nothing on the closing credits, other than to say that both are producers. Was this how British audiences felt when they stumbled out of the cinema having watched...

Netflix has acquired worldwide rights, with some exclusions, for “The Personal History of David Copperfield” star Dev Patel’s directorial debut “Monkey Man.” The streamer is thought to have paid around $30 million for the film.
The rights agreement excludes Spain, Latin America, Iceland, Former Yugoslavia, Poland, Russia and Baltic States, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Pan-Asian Ptv and China, where there are pre-existing deals.
In the India-set film, Patel plays an unlikely hero who emerges from prison to take on a world enmeshed in corporate greed and eroding spiritual values, seeking revenge from those who took everything from him many years ago. The script is by Patel, Paul Angunawela (“Keith Lemon: The Film”), and John Collee, who co-wrote “Hotel Mumbai,” which also starred Patel.
The cast also includes Sharlto Copley (“Ted K”) and Sobhita Dhulipala (“Ghost Stories”).

Cast your minds back to 2002 - a time when Pop Idols didn't need to have The X Factor, Fifty Shades of Grey were just colours on a paint sampler chart and David Beckham was a mere international superstar rather than global megastar.

Mark Kermode's latest book Hatchet Job: Love Movies, Hate Critics brilliantly puts the shifting sands of contemporary film criticism under the microscope.
In an age when emerging digital platforms mean anybody can voice their opinion on film (and be heard), and newspapers scale back the number of critics in full-time employment, Kermode has adeptly moved with the times, utilising radio, TV, podcast, video blog and print (he recently stepped into the Observer shoes of the esteemed Philip French) to cement himself as Britain's foremost movie critic.
His third book Hatchet Job is a passionate look at his profession past and present, the emerging friction between paying public and critic and the "first but wrong" online culture that favours speed of reaction over quality of argument.
In the opening chapter, Kermode acknowledges that a critical pan, or "hatchet job", will often provoke a bigger reaction from his listenership. With that in mind,...

Mad Men producer Lionsgate is to expand its TV production business into the UK as part of a wider international push.
The company, which produces recent Netflix series Orange Is The New Black, Charlie Sheen’s Anger Management and country & western drama Nashville, is keen to grow its TV production business outside of the Us.
Managing director of international television Peter Iacono told ScreenDaily’s sister publication Broadcast that the company would like to replicate the success Lionsgate UK has had in film.
It has produced Jason Statham’s crime thriller Blitz, Keith Lemon: The Film and Alan Rickman’s forthcoming directorial debut A Little Chaos, which is co-produced with BBC Films.
“If we can do this in film, why can’t we do it in TV? It’s a natural evolution,” he said.
The company is in talks with potential co-production partners for drama and comedy projects, and is in early stage discussions with broadcasters.

The winner
With £3.13m, Elysium, starring Matt Damon, proved a convincing winner at the UK box office, more than doubling the take of second-placed We're the Millers. That's at first glance, mind you. Neill Blomkamp's dystopian sci-fi achieved its commanding lead in no small part due to £974,000 in Thursday previews, without which its weekend gross would be £2.15m, as against £1.51m for Millers. Blomkamp's previous film District 9 debuted with £2.29m, a sum achieved without the benefit of previews. Given that District 9 was a feature debut and lacked star actors, you might have expected Elysium to deliver a stronger opening, but in fact it's behind the earlier film on a Friday-to-Sunday comparison.

There are few events in the entertainment calendar as painfully glamorous as the Cannes Film Festival. A-List stars parading around a gorgeous, exotic location in dresses that cost the same as a down payment on a nice semi-detached in Chiswick - this is showbiz heaven, isn't it?
You'd think it impossible when surrounded with so much luxury to have a bad time, but sadly for some celebs their visit to the showcase was a right pain in the derrière, as the French call it. As the 66th festival kicked off last night (May 15) with a gloomy, rain-lashed premiere of The Great Gatsby, we take a moment to remember the stars who came home crying from Cannes.

A trailer for the upcoming series of Celebrity Juice has been released.
The clip shows Kelly Brook - who is standing in for new mother Fearne Cotton as a team captain on the ITV2 show - being hired by host Keith Lemon and Holly Willoughby.
The TV spot opens with Lemon in his office asserting that he "doesn't want anyone" to head up the quiz's second panel other than Fearne Cotton, who is on maternity leave.
Willoughby then buzzes in Brook, and they both approach Lemon's desk to the sound of Def Leppard's 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' as he looks on agog.
"You know, you're not as fit as I remember," Lemon tells Brook.
"Well, you're a lot gingerer than I remember!" she retorts.
Satisfied with her swift response, Willoughby tells Brook that she's got the job.
Brook was confirmed as Cotton's temporary replacement on the comedy panel show last month.

Have the Golden Raspberries become as predictable as the Oscars? Mark looks over this year's nominations...
The beginning of the year in movies is typically dominated by awards season, and with this week's announcement of the Academy Award nominations on both sides of the pond, (the BAFTAs on Wednesday and the Oscars on Thursday) there's no shortage of articles about apparently egregious snubs. Only eight BAFTA nominations for Skyfall? No Best Picture nomination for The Impossible? Like a song by Journey, it goes on and on and on and on.
It's less frequent that you see people complaining about the snubs at the Golden Raspberry Awards, (or Razzies) the cheekily counter-programmed ceremony that names and shames the worst films of the previous year. If you're unfamiliar, you might remember Sandra Bullock's crazy weekend in 2009, where she pulled off the impressive feat of winning the Razzie...

Somewhere between American mumblecore and European arthouse cinema lie the seeds of writer/director Alex Barrett's micro-budget debut feature, an "anti-dramatic" drama in which nothing much happens – and that's not a criticism. In today's marketplace it's hard not to be ever so slightly charmed by any home-grown tale of aimless London youngsters that doesn't revolve around drug-dealing, geezery gangsterism or fakkin football hooliganism. Instead, the postgrad protagonists of Life Just Is (2012, Independent, 15) put most of their energies into wrestling with what Barrett unabashedly calls "the existential and spiritual dilemmas so central to, yet so ignored by, much of modern life".
If this sounds unbearably pretentious, rest assured there's much that is down-to-earth about this bittersweet, dialogue-driven piece which follows its protagonists through the domestic, romantic and existential ups and downs of a week. One...

★☆☆☆☆ Hoping to emulate some of the success of surprise 2011 hit Bridesmaids and even Nigel Cole's The Wedding Video (2012), Jesse Lawrence's The Knot (2012) creeps into UK cinemas this week with a trail of negative press following in its wake. Unlike the universally-panned Keith Lemon: The Film (2012), the team behind The Knot were at least brave enough to screen their gross-out British comedy to the national press ahead of its release. Unfortunately, such a gesture is unlikely to dissuade audiences from condemning the film to their 'Worst of 2012' shortlists.

It was a relatively poor few days in terms of cinema attendances this past weekend as the general public made the collective decision to make the most of one last dose of sunshine before five months of jumpers, freezing mornings and flood warnings. In fact, the market was so bad this past weekend, takings were actually down nearly 30% on the same time last year. Thanks to this relatively low cinematic turnout, Dredd 3D, which became the first 18 certificate film to top the chart since Saw 3D back in October 2010, did so with only just over £1million grossed. This was the lowest total gross to clinch the top spot since Ice Age 4 limped its way to the top a few months back.

There are many things is this world which deep down, I still don’t really understand. Things like, how do planes stay in the air? How does electricity actually work? And just how has June Sarpong forged a career? Few things are as puzzling to me though as the longevity of Adam Sandler’s movie career. He had some decent comedies early on, Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer spring to mind, and Punch-Drunk Love isn’t without its appeal, but since around 2004, he has a seemingly unparalleled run of misfiring duds. 50 First Dates, Spanglish, The Longest Yard, Click, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry , Funny People, Grown Ups, Just Go With It and Jack and Jill. I know somebody must find these movies funny, else they wouldn’t all make a decent return on investment and thus keep getting made, but personally, I just don’t get it.

London, Sep 6: Actress Kelly Brook says she has no qualms if people don't take her seriously.
The 32-year-old spoke to a magazine while promoting her upcoming movie, "Keith Lemon: The Film".
"I just roll with it. If someone says, 'Right, you're going to be the smiley, girl,' you go, 'Okay, yes. I'm going to be that and see where that takes you," Brook said.
"And so far it has taken me all over the world, I can wake up smiling.

Kelly Brook has admitted that she is not worried about being taken seriously. The model and actress is well known for playing the sexy girl in movies such as Keith Lemon: The Film and Piranha 3-D. She told the most recent issue of FHM: "I just roll with it. If you fight against stuff all of the time, you're going to make yourself miserable. "So if someone says, 'Right, you're going to be the smiley, girly, booby girl', you go, 'Ok, yes. I'm going to be that'. And you see where that takes you." In a quiet week Total Recall and The Watch posted respectable figures, but Berberian Sound Studio lost out to The Imposter
The winners
The last weekend of the school summer holiday has never exactly been a premium release date in the UK: over the past couple of years we've seen such venerated classics as Fright Night, Apollo 18 and Dinner for Schmucks dumped on to the market. So this year's batch of end-of-summer releases, while hardly eliciting critical hosannas or audience stampedes, is certainly no worse than usual. Between them, new releases Total Recall and The Watch kicked in £4.7m in box-office, pushing aside Brave to grab the top two spots in the weekend chart.
It's worth noting, however, that both saw their figures inflated by significant previews: two days' worth in the case of Total Recall (£959,000 of the £2.49m total) and four days for The Watch (£1.43m of the...

Sold-out shows announce the arrival of Bart Layton's docu-drama, while Keith Lemon bears fruit despite a juicing from the critics
The winner
Arthouse cinema bookers have lamented that this summer lacked a big specialist release to rank alongside past summer hits Coco Before Chanel or La Vie en Rose. May offered The Raid and Moonrise Kingdom, and June delivered The Angels' Share and Killer Joe, but July and August failed to contribute a big winner, leaving the space occupied by commercial auteur titles such as Magic Mike and The Dark Knight Rises.
Now, however, arrives The Imposter, a plucky underdog contender delivering £345,000 over the four-day holiday weekend, including previews of £29,000, from just 49 sites. Joint distributors Revolver and Picturehouse report sold-out shows in the Clapham and Hackney Picturehouses and Ritzy Brixton, in London, and in other cities such as Brighton, Norwich, Exeter and Bath. I’m just going to come out and say it. I don’t like Leigh Francis. Bo’ Selecta was rubbish. Keith Lemon is rubbish. Therefore Leigh Francis (I find it hard to come to any other conclusion) is rubbish.
You would thus be right in thinking that I entered Keith Lemon: The Film with my expectations hovering in the ‘probably worse than Police Academy 2′ zone. A zone that I reserve for only the worst cinematic garbage (some of the inhabitants of this zone of course include Police Academy’s 3 through 7).
So here I am with a sort of critical predicament. Do I give Keith Lemon: The Film the going over I always knew I would or do I try and see it from the fans perspective (a perspective it is clearly aimed at)? Well sticking to my guns I should of course give my own personal response. I should give...

The Imposter (15)
(Bart Layton, 2012, UK) Frédéric Bourdin, Charlie Parker, Carey Gibson. 99 mins.
Documentaries don't come much stranger than this. The film begins with the discovery in Spain in 1997 of a 16-year-old boy. Could this really be Nicholas Barclay, who went missing aged 13 from his home in San Antonio, Texas? Well, no. Nicholas's family welcomed this "boy" into their home without realising that he was in fact a 23-year-old French-Algerian master of deception named Frédéric Bourdin. Then things got really weird.
Shadow Dancer (15)
(James Marsh, 2012, UK/Ire) Clive Owen, Andrea Riseborough, Aidan Gillen, Gillian Anderson. 102 mins.
An embittered mother dedicated to the Ira struggle is forced to turn informer by MI5. This stark and suspenseful thriller returns documentary-maker Marsh to scripted drama after Man On Wire and Project Nim.
The Watch (15)
(Akiva Schaffer, 2012, Us) Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, Vince Vaughn, Richard Ayoade, Rosemarie DeWitt, Mel Rodriguez. 102 mins.

I hope everyone has managed to contain their enthusiasm this week. I hope the weight of expectation hasn’t proven too heavy as you went about your week safe in the knowledge that this weekend, after all the waiting, after the weeks, nay months of expectation, the comedy double bill of the century was finally upon us.
Yes folks, it’s finally here, that weekend you had circled in your diary since before you can remember, it’s the weekend where both Keith Lemon: The Film and The Three Stooges are released into the world.
I imagine my rather poor attempt at cynical humour there wasn’t lost on anyone, but perhaps I shouldn’t be so quick to judge. One should never judge a cinematic book by its cover and these two movies could both be comedy gold for all we know. In the words of Principal Seymour Skinner…...

Both Brave and Bourne benefited from an unconventional Monday release, while Ted joined the £20m club, and Batman broke more records
The winner
Critics have remarked that historical animated adventure Brave doesn't quite boast the trademark originality of a Pixar film, but UK box-office has been pretty robust. Following 10 days in Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland that yielded £2.22m, expansion last Monday into England and Wales saw seven-day takings across the whole region of just over £6m, for a total to date of £8.27m. The film grossed £2.60m over the Friday-to-Sunday period.
The eccentric release pattern makes comparisons with previous Pixar movies tricky: last summer, for what it's worth, Cars 2 debuted with three-day takings of £3.54m. On the other hand, there is one comparison it is possible to make: earlier this summer, Ice Age 4: Continental Drift opened in the same territories two weeks early, and boosted its opening...

Take This Waltz (15)
(Sarah Polley, 2011, Can/Spa/Jap) Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Luke Kirby, Sarah Silverman, Jennifer Podemski. 116 mins
This is almost the opposite of a romcom: it deals with the prospect of a happy couple breaking up, as Williams is tempted away from cuddly partner Rogen by a handsome, wholesome neighbour. Which is better? The solid, stable kind of love, or the whirlwind, passionate kind? There are some irritating quirks, but on the whole it's an intelligent, truthful drama exploring guilt, regret, confusion and other grown-up emotions generally absent from the summer movie season.
The Bourne Legacy (12A)
(Tony Gilroy, 2012, Us) Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton. 135 mins

Keith Lemon: The Film is the movie debut of Leigh Francis’ celebrity-bothering alter ego (as the fairly self-explanatory title suggests). The movie delves into Lemon’s early days as pre-fame inventor/salesman, proudly dubbed ‘Small-time businessman of the year’ in 1993.
