International Film Festival Rotterdam has revealed its Cinema Regained program, which showcases restored classics, documentaries on cinema and works by filmmaking masters.

This year’s Cinema Regained selection shines a light on filmmakers whose contributions have shaped cinema history, both celebrated and overlooked.

After a 30-year hiatus, Burkinabé director Drissa Touré makes his return with the world premiere of “Mousso Fariman,” co-directed with Stéphane Mbanga, which explores the contradictions in Burkina Faso’s society, focusing on the resilience of women in daily life.

The legacy of Sergei Parajanov is honored with the world premiere of “The Lilac Wind of Paradjanov,” 37 years after his first visit to the festival. Filmmaker Ali Khamraev, accompanied by cinematographer Yuri Klimenko, delved into the archives and traveled to Armenia and Georgia to honor Parajanov.

International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) has unveiled its “Cinema Regained” program for 2025, featuring 43 restored classics, documentaries, and film heritage explorations. The strand includes both contemporary works and pre-1970 restorations.

Key premieres include Mousso Fariman — the first film from Burkinabé director Drissa Touré (Haramuya) in 30 years, co-directed with Stéphane Mbanga — and The Lilac Wind of Paradjanov, a tribute to the late, legendary Soviet filmmaker Sergei Parajanov, from director Ali Khamraev. The film will screen in Rotterdam 38 years after Parajanov and co-director Dodo Abashidze’s The Legend of Suram Fortress premiered at IFFR in 1987, winning the prize for best innovative film.

The Cinema Regained program will also show a restored version of José Álvaro Morais’s The Jester, which was first screened at IFFR in 1988.

"Epic Pictures’ specialty horror label Dread presents Ghost Game, following a couple’s internet challenge that turns fatal as they trespass into a haunted house, facing sinister evils lurking within its walls. Ghost Game will have a limited theatrical run beginning October 18, and on October 22 the film will be available to rent or purchase on video-on-demand (VOD). The film will be available on Blu-ray beginning December 10.

Ghost Game is the second directorial feature from Jill Gevargizian, best known for her feature debut The Stylist, which developed from an award-winning short film of the same title and debuted in 2020 from Arrow Video.

May’s highlights include the Shudder original films Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever and Stopmotion, as well as new episodes of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs.

The repertory titles include Blood and Black Lace, Combat Shock, Deathdream, Mother’s Day, The Stone Tape, The Toxic Avenger films, YellowBrickRoad, and more.

Colin Krawchuck’s The Jester lends horror flicks a different and harrowing definition. Jester chronicles a sinister entity sporting an orange suit, a black hat, and clown makeup who kills people on Halloween Eve. However, evil does give his victims a chance to save their lives. From what it appears, Jester gives them a task, probably something like reflecting on past mistakes and making amends with their families. If they succeed, voila, they live to see another day, and if they don’t, Jester will kill them in a manner only he could think of. At the beginning of The Jester, we see a middle-aged man named John Wheeler (Matt Servitto) begging forgiveness from his daughter for what he did. Unfortunately, his daughter, Emma, was in no mood to hear him out. She disconnects the call, and with that, the man’s only hope of surviving.

The Marvels opens in 665 cinemas through Disney. This is slightly fewer than recent Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) titles Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 (708), Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania (680) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (704); the last MCU film to open on fewer screens was Chloe Zhao’s Eternals in 2021 (646).

Running for 15 years and counting, the MCU is still the highest-grossing film franchise both in UK-Ireland and worldwide.

Universal’s “Trolls Band Together” has reclaimed the top spot at the U.K. and Ireland box office from stablemate “Five Nights At Freddy’s.”

In its third weekend, “Trolls Band Together” collected £1.8 million ($2.2 million) for a total of £12.7 million ($15.7 million). In the process it won back the pole position it had ceded to Universal’s “Five Nights At Freddy’s,” which in its second weekend took in £1.2 million in second place for a total of £8.7 million.

In third position, Paramount’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” directed by Martin Scorsese, earned £1.1 million in third place for a total of £7.7 million. In fourth place, in its fourth weekend, Trafalgar Releasing’s concert film “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” sang to the tune of a further £970,005 for a total of £11.6 million.

Rounding off the top five was Paramount’s “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” which collected £536,134 in its fourth weekend for a total of £7.1 million.

Last week saw the big screen release of the anthology film Satanic Hispanics, which features a segment that was directed by Sánchez, and on September 29th Dread (the specialty horror label of distribution and financing company Epic Pictures) will be giving a theatrical release to The Jester, which counts Sánchez as one of its executive producers.
