Bryan Cranston has delivered hit after hit over the years as one of the most outstanding actors of all time, but his performance in Breaking Bad remains his best work to date. To say the least, that smash-hit drama series about the meth-making business is worthy of all the critical commendation and accolades that it has garnered and won over the years.
Curiously enough, while this show worked perfectly to make the actor a household name in Hollywood’s entertainment industry, there was a time when that very crime/drama saga almost didn’t make it to the screens. before AMC took a leap of faith. And the reason behind it not getting made was actually a Friends actress’ drama getting picked over it.

Stars: Ed Harris, Gabrielle Union, Miles J. Harvey, Lewis Pullman, Jennifer Coolidge, Bill Murray, Pete Davidson | Written by John Pollono | Directed by Dito Montiel
Dito Montiel’s Riff Raff is a curious tale, a crime comedy that boasts an ensemble cast of heavyweights like Ed Harris, Jennifer Coolidge, Bill Murray, Gabrielle Union, and a surprisingly great turn from Pete Davidson. Riff Raff blends dark humour, family dysfunction, and gritty thrills into a holiday-season caper. While it occasionally shines thanks to its talented performers, Riff Raff ultimately lives and breathes in the strength of its writing. Often it’s somewhat of a chaotic mashup of genres that can’t quite decide if it wants to be a biting satire, a heartfelt drama, or a full-on gangster flick, but somehow comes out the other side having entertained and thrilled this viewer with its rapid pace and effortless execution.

Lots of Americans tuned in to see what President Donald Trump has in mind for his second term in office: 36.6 million viewers watched Trump’s joint address to Congress on Tuesday, Nielsen has announced, marking a three-year high for the annual speech. (Note: A President’s first speech to Congress is not technically considered a “State of the Union” speech, but instead referred to as an Address to a Joint Session of Congress.)

President Donald Trump’s first address to Congress of his term drew an audience larger than three of those by his predecessor, Joe Biden, but also smaller than any from Trump’s first term.
According to Nielsen, 36.63 million people watched the 100-minute speech across 15 networks. That’s about 14 percent more viewers than Biden’s final State of the Union last year (32.23 million viewers) on 14 cable and broadcast outlets.
The numbers fell short, however, of any address from Trump’s first term. His four addresses to a joint session of Congress averaged 44.3 million viewers, with a low of 37.17 million in 2020. (The first speech to Congress of an incoming president’s term is not technically a State of the Union address.)
The 15 broadcast and cable outlets airing the speech were ABC, CBS, CNN, CNNe, Fox, Fox Business, Fox News, Merit Street, MSNBC, NBC, Newsmax, Newsnation, PBS, Telemundo and Univision.

Donald Trump’s address to Congress reached an average of 36.6 million viewers on Monday.
That total puts the speech 13% above Joe Biden’s most recent State of the Union address, which reached 32.2 million viewers in 2024. Still, Trump didn’t manage to draw as large an audience as he did with any of his State of the Union addresses during his first term as president. His 2017 address reached 47.7 million viewers, followed by 45.6 million in 2018, 46.8 in 2019 and 37.2 million in 2020.
Measured by Nielsen, this year’s total accounts for viewers across ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Merit Street, Telemundo, Univision, PBS, CNN, CNNe, Fox Business, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, NewsMax and NewsNation. Biden’s 2024 total includes all of the same networks minus Merit Street, which is unlikely to have caused a large enough discrepancy to affect which telecast drew more viewers. “No Other Land” is the most acclaimed film of 2024 without U.S. distribution, be it because of apprehension over embracing a story about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict or because of general concern for the documentary market theatrically.
And yet, even without a proper distributor backing it, the film has grossed just shy of $420,000 at the domestic box office. What’s more impressive — or perhaps more sad, considering the state of documentary film — is that the film is now the highest-grossing feature among the five doc features nominated at the Oscars this year.
According to data from Comscore, “Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat” (Kino Lorber) is the next highest with $320,530 cumulative as of February 25. “Porcelain War” (Picturehouse Films) came in at No. 3 with $215,826 cumulative, and No. 4 “Sugarcane” (Variance Films) has $112,251 cumulative. “Black Box Diaries” (MTV Documentary Films) had no reported numbers via Comscore but had a release on October 25, and Box Office...

You know Netflix is popular, and you know several different series, especially original series, have an immense global appeal. In the second half of 2024 alone, 20 series had at least 25 million views each. 77 movies had at least 25 million views, based on the results Netflix released this week.
But one series stands out above all others. That would be Squid Game Season 2. It led all series in views (and also amassed 619.9 million viewing hours). The magic is that the second season was not released until December 26, which means, of course, that Squid Game got all those views in six days. Clearly, people were ready for the release.
The show coming in second might be a bit more surprising. The first season of The Perfect Couple, starring Nicole Kidman, finished in second place. Sure, we knew it was popular, but that popular? Now we know.

In 1994, I saw all three Star Wars movies for the first time in one thrilling day. The first thing I wanted to know once I'd emotionally recovered from my introduction was if we ever found out what happened next. I found Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire not long after that and breathed a huge sigh of relief that the saga continued. But even as a 13-year-old, I was disappointed from the first chapter that Luke still seemed to be single. Luckily, that didn't last forever, and it was immensely satisfying to see how he became a husband and father over the years of the Expanded Universe.

James McTeigue made an explosive directorial debut with the critically acclaimed V for Vendetta in 2005, and has since added five more movies to his resume. His last cinematic project was Breaking In, a home invasion thriller starring Gabrielle Union, released in 2018. Members of the Academy Documentary Branch sifted through 169 eligible nonfiction features to determine this year’s shortlist. The 15 selected films are beautifully crafted docs about interesting and important subjects. Ten docs that made the list premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, while the five remaining debuted at other top-tier festivals, including Berlin, Venice and Toronto.
“No Other Land,” about the resistance of Palestinian activists against forced displacement in the West Bank, won the best documentary prize at the Berlin International Film Festival and recently earned top accolades from the National Board of Review. The film does not have U.S. distribution. Brett Story and Stephen Maing’s “Union,” about a group of current and former Amazon workers attempting to unionize employees, premiered at Sundance. After successful screenings at 50 festivals worldwide, Story and Maing self-released “Union” via Level Ground this fall. Am I Racist?, the controversial documentary that satirizes Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, failed to make the Oscar shortlist of nonfiction features today, despite earning more money at the box office than any other documentary this year, by far.
The film directed by Justin Folk features conservative author and podcaster Matt Walsh going undercover to infiltrate Dei seminars, dinners and the like. It scooped up more than $12 million at the domestic box office, but that wasn’t enough to sway the minds of Academy Documentary Branch members, who determine the shortlist (as well as the eventual five Oscar nominees).

Will & Harper, the Netflix documentary about comedic actor Will Ferrell and his friendship with SNL pal Harper Steele who came out as trans, earned a spot on the coveted Oscar documentary feature shortlist today.
It wasn’t the only shortlist honor for the film directed by Josh Greenbaum. The tune from the closing credits – “Will and Harper Go West,” written by SNL alum Kristen Wiig and Sean Douglas and performed by Wiig – got shortlisted for Best Original Song (Douglas is the son of actor Michael Keaton).
But another high-profile documentary in the running for the shortlist didn’t make the cut: Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, about the late actor who was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident. That film, directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, recently won Best Documentary Feature at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards, and last week earned a nomination for the Producers Guild of America Award.

Oscar shortlists are like exit polls released on Election Day before balloting has ended: they’re the best information yet available about how actual voters are feeling, but they don’t necessarily tell you the whole story.
In Tuesday’s announcement of this year’s 10 shortlists — which were, as always, chosen by different branches of the Academy, not the full membership — we saw a terrific show of strength from Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, with a field-leading six mentions; and very solid showings from Universal’s Wicked, with four; and Fox’s Alien: Romulus, Apple’s Blitz, Warners’ Dune: Part Two, Paramount’s Gladiator II and Universal’s The Wild Robot, with three each.
But the fact that, say, Neon’s Anora, Searchlight’s A Real Pain and Amazon/MGM’s Nickel Boys showed up on none of the shortlists is actually not an indication that they are failing to resonate with the Academy.

If there is one fickle and often head-scratching branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it’s the Documentary one. Over the years, the branch has angered many of its peers by snubbing acclaimed works and uplifting what some consider pedestrian docs. This year appears to be on solid ground as the Documentary Film Oscar shortlist contains critically lauded films such as “No Other Land,” “Daughters,” “Porcelain War,” and “Union.”

The night’s top prize went to “A Different Man,” Aaron Schimberg’s A24 body transformation comedy that premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Almost a century has passed since Chaplin’s cult classic “Modern Times” (1936) saw the light of the day, but it seems that the laborers’ spatial position in an advanced capitalist country has scarcely improved. Stephen Maing (director of “Crime+Punishment”) and Brett Story’s (director of “The Hottest August”) 2024 documentary “Union” stand as a testament to this fact. Made over three years, the film tracks the Amazon Labor Union (Alu) movement from its nascent stage until it made New York’s Staten Island’s JFK8 warehouse the first unionized Amazon workplace.
“Union” opens with a scene where Amazon workers languidly board a bus that takes them to the warehouse, reminding us of the opening scene of “Modern Times”, where the workers, in a flurry, run toward the factories to get exploited – both physically and of course economically. The initial scene of “Union” – drenched in a poignant blue – allures us to...

Level Ground Productions supervised a self-distributed release for “Union” back in October, with directors Stephen Maing and Brett Story, along with their producers opening the movie in theaters across 20 markets. “Union” has...

Who knew pop star Ariana Grande was an adept musical comedienne? That surprise discovery should land her an Oscar nomination for Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the global hit musical “Wicked”, which will prove a box-office juggernaut. On that much “Screen Talk” co-hosts Ryan Lattanzio and Anne Thompson agree; but he hates the cheesy visuals and loves Jonathan Bailey’s charismatic supporting turn as the romantic interest of both witches-in-training, while Anne admires the music, well-produced by Marc Platt and delivered with gusto by Cynthia Erivo and Grande.
“Wicked” follows Steven Spielberg’s recent “West Side Story,” which earned seven nominations in 2022 and a win for another supporting discovery, Ariana DeBose. And Rob Marshall’s film version of Bob Fosse’s “Chicago” (2002) was also one of 10 musical Best Picture winners. But we agree they were executed with more visual and technical mastery.

From the rousing leader dismissed for leading a walkout to the activists handing out free burgers, pizza and weed, an inspiring new documentary charts the long, hard fight to create the delivery giant’s first union
As Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House in January, US trades unions are among the many constituencies bracing themselves for impact. Cheered on by Elon Musk, Trump is expected to gut public regulators – including the National Labor Relations Board (Nlrb), which enforces unions’ right to organise in America’s workplaces. Musk, who rejects unions as creating “a lords-and-peasants sort of thing”, had already joined a legal claim, alongside Amazon founder and fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos, arguing the Nlrb is “unconstitutional” and should be scrapped.
It is against this bleak outlook for US labour activists that a new documentary, Union, opens in the UK this week. It follows the David and Goliath...

“Dahomey,” “Ernest Cole: Lost and Found,” “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin,” “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat” and “Sugarcane” are among the 20 nonfiction films that have made the shortlist for the International Documentary Association’s 2024 IDA Documentary Awards, the IDA announced on Thursday morning.
The shortlisted features come from 21 different countries and include works by Mati Diop (“Dahomey”), Raoul Peck (“Ernest Cole: Lost and Found”). The IDA’s feature shortlist is typically idiosyncratic in that it doesn’t include several of the most acclaimed and highest-profile nonfiction films of the year, including “Will & Harper,” “Daughters,” “Piece by Piece,” “Mountain Queen” and “Union.”
Of the 20 films on the IDA shortlist, eight also appeared on the Doc NYC list of likely awards titles: “Black Box Diaries,” “Dahomey,” “Ernest Cole: Lost and Found,” “No Other Land,” Queendom,” “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin,” “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat” and “Sugarcane.”
