Irish post-production house Windmill Lane Pictures closes with immediate effect
Image
Dublin-based post-production house Windmill Lane Pictures is to close with immediate effect, citing the impact of the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strike in the US and the “erosion of competitiveness” of Ireland’s VFX tax credit.

Windmill Lane was founded as a recording studio and TV commercial post-production facility in 1978, with James Morris, who later set up Irish TV channel TV3, among its founders. In 1990, the recording studio and post-production house was divided and the recording studios, used by artists including U2, remains in operation.

Steve Coogan and Éanna Hardwicke Transform Into Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane in First Look at ‘Saipan,’ About Infamous 2002 World Cup Walkout (Exclusive)
Image
The first look of Éanna Hardwicke as Manchester United and Ireland soccer legend Roy Keane alongside Steve Coogan as his embattled Irish national manager Mick McCarthy, has been revealed from upcoming comedy biopic “Saipan.”

The film — first announced earlier in the year by Variety — chronicles one of the most infamous moments in Irish sporting history, when Keane and McCarthy had a very public falling out. Alongside Hardwicke and Coogan, the supporting cast includes Alice Lowe (“Sightseers”), Jamie Beamish (“Derry Girls”), Alex Murphy (“Young Offenders”), Harriet Cains (“Bridgerton”) and Peter McDonald (“The Batman”).

“Saipan” is being directed by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa — the duo behind “Good Vibrations” and “Ordinary Love” — — working from an original script by Paul Fraser (“Dead Man’s Shoes”). Bankside Films is handling sales and will be showing a promo to buyers at the American Film Market.

10 Best Barry Keoghan Movies (Ranked)
Image
While many young actors are trying to get their break in Hollywood by starring in coming-of-age or young-adult movies, Barry Keoghan is one of the unique actors in the industry who are continuously choosing edgy films one after another and along the way he is proving his acting chops to almost every person in the world. The Irish actor appeared in Marvel superhero flick Eternals and then took on the role of Batman’s most famous villain, the Joker, in the new Matt Reeves film The Batman. The young actor has also worked with multiple accomplished industry directors like Christopher Nolan, Emerald Fennell, and Yorgos Lanthimos. So, if you think you are also slowly becoming a fan of this guy check out these 10 movies that are his best.

Barry Keoghan Set to Reprise Joker Role in ‘The Batman: Part II’
Image
With the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’, the Dceu era officially wraps up, ushering in a new phase led by James Gunn and his rebranded Dcu cinematic universe. However, not all DC character projects will align with this new universe. Matt Reeves’ dark and gritty Batman-centric stories will exist as standalone “Elseworlds” tales, a decision consistent with Pattinson’s Batman not being part of the Dceu. Pattinson leads as Bruce Wayne, joined by Kravitz as Catwoman, Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Farrell as the Penguin.

While most roles were confirmed earlier, Keoghan’s portrayal of the Joker remains uncertain, despite Reeves confirming his role in the first movie post-release. Though Collider reported Keoghan’s return a year ago, official studio confirmation is still pending. Vanity Fair’s inquiry received no explicit denial from Keoghan, leading fans to speculate on the Joker’s potential minor role in the sequel,...

Barry Keoghan Is Having a Moment, But His Career Is Far From New
Image
Many people may not realize that Barry Keoghan has been acting in major motion pictures for just under ten years. The 31-year-old Irish actor has more projects under his belt than some of the more recognizable names in Hollywood. He seems like a young actor who has continually found real box-office fame. So, what is it about Barry Keoghan that has brought him to this current pinnacle of his career?

Keoghan has been creeping into the public consciousness since his first major roles and, in the eyes of critics, has deserved every accolade. That is why the last eight years have been so pivotal. To see him blossom from a reliable character actor into a full-blown star is a sight to behold.

The Man Himself

Keoghan began acting in school plays after his mother passed away. He was struck by her death and told The Guardian that it influenced the...

Introducing the Dublin Acting School Where Barry Keoghan (and Many Other Irish Stars) Got Their Start
Image
Since he was nominated for both an Oscar and a BAFTA (which he later won) for his scene-stealing supporting performance in The Banshees of Inisherin, there’s been much talk about Barry Keoghan’s inspiring rise to fame.

As will likely be etched into Irish folklore as his Hollywood trajectory continues its sharp ascent, the Dubliner — born in one of the city’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods — would spend seven years in foster homes as a child. It was only around 2008, aged 16, when Keoghan’s love of movies was piqued by an ad in a shop window looking for actors for a new crime drama that was being shot locally. Three years later, he landed a role in Irish TV series Love/Hate (which would become a breeding ground for young Irish talent), followed by 2014’s indie hit ‘72, before breaking out internationally in 2017 with both Dunkirk and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

Horror Highlights: Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes, The Sacrifice Game, Hear US Scream Volume II
Image
Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes: "Margo, who comes from a noble family, inherited a castle that she inspects with her ill-tempered husband Dieter. When they arrive at the run-down keep, their relationship is put to a test as their sanity slowly deteriorates. This opens up a new world. As time and space begin to shift around them, a reality that only exists within the walls of the eerie building is exposed - a reality full of warmth and excess.

Things aren't as they seem in this genre-bending film, that shifts between different story layers in unpredictable ways. It is a love letter to European cinema of the sixties and seventies that will leave viewers guessing what will happen next. "

Yellow Veil Pictures Closes Deal With 1091 Pictures for Scott Friend’s Directorial Debut ‘To the Moon’ (Exclusive)
Image
New York City and L.A.-based indie distributor 1091 Pictures, known for such hit releases as Taika Waititi’s “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” Spirit Awards winner “Christine” and knockout comedy “The Overnight,” has swooped in on rights to all English-speaking territories for psychedelic thriller “To the Moon.” The drama, sold by Yellow Veil Pictures, marks the directorial debut of actor Scott Friend (“The Dark End of the Street”), who also wrote the pic and plays a lead role in it.

Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders (2013)
Peaky Blinders Series 6 Cast: New Characters, Stephen Graham, Amber Anderson & More
Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders (2013)
Warning: contains Peaky Blinders Series 5 spoilers.

Since Peaky Blinders broke through on Netflix in the US, its creators have dropped hints about the Hollywood superstars lobbying for roles in the Birmingham-based gangster drama. Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Snoop Dogg, Samuel L. Jackson and more are all fans of the show, and apparently keen to come aboard. Those names don’t appear among the series six cast announced below (though who knows about the planned follow-up feature film), but it’s obvious that Peaky Blinders has no trouble attracting serious talent. Series six welcomes acclaimed This is England, Boardwalk Empire, The Virtues and Line of Duty‘s Stephen Graham, and welcomes back Tom Hardy once again as the apparently unkillable Alfie Solomons. Both will appear in Peaky Blinders’ final TV series, alongside one of the finest British regular casts around. We’ll update this list as more details are confirmed.

Shudder Sets Supernatural Thriller ‘Brooklyn 45’ As Latest Original
Image
Exclusive: AMC Network’s genre-focused streaming service Shudder has commissioned its latest original movie, Brooklyn 45, written and directed by Ted Geoghegan. The streamer will launch the pic exclusively in 2022.

The film, which began principal photography on December 2, is set on a freezing evening in December 1945, as five military veterans gather together in the ornate parlour of a Brooklyn brownstone. Best friends since childhood, they have reunited to support their troubled host – but when his invitation for cocktails turns into an impromptu séance, the metaphoric ghosts of their past become all-too-literal.

Geoghegan penned the screenplay with assistance from his late father, a disabled Air Force Veteran-turned-history teacher.

“Since losing my dad, I’ve been obsessed with bringing the powerful, timely script we collaborated on to the screen. A story of the ghosts, rage, and toxicity that follow all human conflict, the heart of Brooklyn 45 beats just...

Image
Stars: David Bluvband, Adam R. Brown, Ryan Conrath, Mike Lawrence, David Littleton, Ruth Lolla, Greg Maness, Ruby McCollister, Lucy McMichael, Shannon O’Neill, Jeff Riddle, Chloe Roe, Chet Siegel | Written and Directed by Matthew John Lawrence

An interesting title but a sub genre that is slowly picking up pace, as Uncle Peckerhead fits nicely in the hard to subscribe metal/punk-rock horror movies sub genre. Recent films include the brutal Green Room, the fun slasher The Ranger, real life story Lords of Chaos, the goretastic Deathgasm and now Uncle Peckerhead.

A punk band, with very little money head out on their first tour. Struggling with everything from playing live to finding somewhere to stay each night to getting a tour ‘bus’, things start to look up but a bit messy when they are joined by a man-eating demon as their roadie.

Netflix Is Adding Over 100 New Movies/TV Shows This Week
Image
The theatrical industry is still struggling to return to normal, and matters aren’t helped as the studios continue to pull major releases from the calendar and send them to next year. There might not be a lot of content available on the big screen, but luckily the streaming wars remain in full swing, and as the market leaders, Netflix are constantly updating their library to retain their position at the front of the pack.

Enola Holmes has become the latest of the platform’s originals to dominate the conversation, but the usual array of forgotten titles have also been posting a strong showing as subscribers occupy their downtime with a variety of movies and TV shows, not all of which need to be the subject of critical acclaim or even good reviews.

Next week takes us into October, meaning that the first day of the month brings a huge...

The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
New on Netflix: October 2020 Releases
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Netflix was ahead of the game for October, releasing its “Netflix and Chills” horror lineup in anticipation of the Halloween season. Now the streaming giant has unveiled its full lineup for October, and believe it or not: horror remains at the forefront of its strategy.

The biggest release this month is undoubtedly The Haunting of Bly Manor, Mike Flanagan’s long-awaited followup to terrifying Haunting of Hill House. That arrives on Oct. 9. The film side of things is where most of Netflix’s other horror originals reside, with Hubie Halloween (Oct. 7), A Babysitters’ Guide to Monster Hunting (Oct. 15), and Rebecca (Oct. 22) all making their debut.

Some non-horror originals of note this month include high school drama Grand Army (Oct. 16) and the Anya-Taylor Joy-starring chess story The Queen’s Gambit (Oct. 26). Aaron Sorkin’s latest film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, arrives on Oct. 16.

Netflix is adding new library movies like Fargo,...

Netflix Announces Over 100 New Movies And TV Shows For October
The full list of everything that’s coming to Netflix in October has been released today and as we’re facing the prospect of a Halloween spent at home, the streaming site is making sure that we’ve got more than enough spooky content to keep us occupied. In fact, there’s a huge amount of new movies and TV shows arriving on the service next month as part of the “Netflix and Chills” season.

October 1st also delivers a lot of great newly licensed content, too, which you won’t want to miss. Sticking with the Halloween theme, though, the haul features a few horrors/thrillers including Cape Fear, House of 1000 Corpses and You Have Always Lived in the Castle. Then, on the 2nd, new original movie Vampires vs. the Bronx lands. And skipping ahead to the 7th, be sure to catch Adam Sandler’s latest comedy, Hubie Halloween.

Fantasia 2020: First teaser for ‘The Block Island Sound’
Image
The Block Island Sound is a hair-raising new horror creation from Kevin and Matthew McManus, Emmy-nominated writers and producers of American Vandal and Cobra Kai, and filmmakers behind past Fantasia hits Funeral Kings and Slumlord (aka 13 Cameras).

Atmospheric, smart and compellingly character-driven, the film captures a real sense of isolation and paranoia, with an experiential feel for its environment, brought to life with striking cinematography and sound design. Sheffield, McManus, and Archambault are fantastic, joined by a strong supporting cast that includes Jim Cummings (Thunder Road), Jeremy Holm and Willie C. Carpenter (Men in Black). The Block Island Sound is at once intimate and unconventionally grandiose, delivering thrills while touching on a range of the signature worries of our times, from conspiracy theories and climate change to unpreventable familial breakdowns. Remote fishing communities have never been scarier.

Something terrifying is happening off the coast of Block Island. A strange force is thriving,...

‘Uncle Peckerhead’ Review

That description is simply put but it makes for a...

HBO to Develop Drama Series Based on Quinn Colson Novels by Ace Atkins (Exclusive)
Image
The Quinn Colson novels by Ace Atkins are being developed as a TV series at HBO, Variety has learned exclusively.

In the books, Colson is a former Army Ranger who returns to his home in rural northeast Mississippi. But upon returning, he discovers that where he grew up has been overrun with corruption, drugs, and violence.

There are currently 10 novels in the Quinn Colson series, starting with “The Ranger.” Others include “The Lost Ones,” “The Broken Place,” “The Forsaken,” and “The Redeemers.”

In addition to writing the Quinn Colson novel series, Atkins also took over Robert B. Parker’s Spenser character following Parker’s death in 2010. He has written eight novels in the Spenser series since. That includes “Wonderland,” which was subsequently adapted into the Mark Wahlberg-Winston Duke film “Spenser Confidential.” Atkins is a former newspaper reporter and SEC football player who also writes essays and investigative pieces for various publications.

Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell Headed To Shudder Next Month
Rob Zombie’s unasked for threequel 3 From Hell will be available to watch on horror streaming service Shudder next month, with the film landing on the platform on February 13th.

For those who haven’t seen it yet, the pic’s a follow-up to grindhouse throwbacks House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects, retconning the finale of the latter that saw the three surviving members of the murderous Firefly clan die in a hail of bullets, after Zombie changed his mind about unequivocally killing them off to avoid any possibility of a sequel.

They survive their multiple gunshot wounds and a “million to one” chance of making it through surgery, with the film missing an opportunity to truly embrace the connotations of its title by having them survive on account of being so evil that the underworld itself spat them back out. After Captain Spaulding is executed, Otis and...

'Night School' and 'Smallfoot' Poised to Top the Weekend Box Office
Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish in La scuola serale (2018)
Last weekend ended up being the worst overall weekend of the year so far with all films on Mojo's weekend chart totaling a mere $91.8 million with the top twelve grossing just over $81 million. This weekend, however, should find the top twelve alone combining to bring in over $100 million as the month is shaping up to be the second highest grossing September ever, just behind last year's record performance for the month. A pair of newcomers are expected to finish #1 and #2 for the weekend, beginning with Universal's comedy Night School followed by the Warner Bros. animated title Smallfoot. Additional new releases include Lionsgate's release of the CBS horror-thriller Hell Fest and Pinnacle Peak's Little Women opening in a moderate number of locations. Set to top the weekend box office is Universal's comedy Night School starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish. The film is set to debut in just over...

Black 47 review – brutal revenge amid the horror of the Irish famine
An Irishman deserts from the British army to wreak vengeance on a hated absentee landlord in a shocking but insightful drama

Irish film-maker Lance Daly has taken on the great famine of the 19th century, and its worst year, the “Black ’47”, drawing from it an intestine-snappingly brutal movie that you could call revenge horror, or revenge western. Revenge something, anyway. And this is probably the generic result of seeing the famine not as a sorrowful tragedy, but as a matter of criminal constitutional negligence, with colonial rulers creating a serf class of disenfranchised tenant farmers, whose product was exported and who were made dependent for subsistence on a single, blight-vulnerable strain of potato.
