DISLIKED - My Endless Quest for the Perfect Horror...
This is a list of horror films that I have rated 5/10 or lower and that I didn't like at all or o thought were hugely overated. I usually find lists a bit useless as I don't know what the person doesn't like, or if I haven'tseen the others I have nothing ro compare to! So I have made a list of films liked too, to provide some perspective of my tastes.. This is, of course, a subjective list and kind of a log of my journey to find the perfect/scariest film (8 or 9 plus?). Perhaps I never will, but I am determined in my quest! I find lists, ratings and reviews hard to judge because of subjectivity. I have no idea what those people usually find scary. I can't tell you what you find scary, but I can tell you what I do and don't find scary and perhaps films I like will scare you too! I'm not really talking about gore and thrilling scares, perhaps I mean less tangible, or otherworldly.. ghostly.. Trying to keep it brief, things/moments/scenes/ideas that generally do scare me when done well are; Ghosts, people acting out of character/being creepy, children singing, repetition, people moving in unison, prolonged exposure to something scary, suspense/slow movement/atmosphere, distortion, the surreal, technology (videos photos etc), things moving in the distance that aren't made a big deal of, explanations for ghosts other than religion. I do like the suspense of some older films, but also appreciate modern production and the minimal use of CGI. More specifically, I find scary the twins in The Shining, the man in the dark in L'Interieur, Lin Shaye and her brain in Dead End, people ignoring the fact their sister's head got chopped off, small men talking backwards forwards, etc. And what don't usually find scary.... Jumps, the sudden religious banishment of ghosts, derivative or boring and overdone stories.. I would say I'm scared fairly easily, but perhaps I'm somewhat desensitized. The only film I've ever given a 10 is How to Train your Dragon (not for scariness..)! I'm not a harsh rater and don't write films off because they're not perfect, but I certainly consider the film as a whole. I guess if you liked some of the films on my list then you may like the ones I do.
