The Grammy Awards celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip-hop Sunday night with a 14-minute performance, packed with luminaries from the genre’s past and present.
More than 20 of hip-hop’s biggest artists ascended onto the Grammys stage for an exciting cross-generational medley that became one of the highlights of this year’s awards ceremony. Fans across the world, and spectators in attendance (like Jay-Z), were enthralled as they watched hip-hop’s pioneers and rising stars both get the showcase they deserved on “music’s biggest night.” Nowhere else have we...

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, Mastercard is sponsoring “She Run This,” a three-part panel series spotlighting Black female entrepreneurs and musicians. On Friday, Feb. 3, Mastercard’s vp of global sponsorships Laytoya Bennett-Johnson was joined by trailblazing rappers Salt-n-Pepa, emerging rapper Baby Tate, Grammy-nominated rapper Rapsody, entrepreneur Bridgid Coulter Cheadle and journalist Gia Peppers, who moderated the conversation.
The panelists were invited to speak about how they’ve built their brands, the ways in which entrepreneurship and creativity have impacted their businesses and musical careers, how they define success as women working in and around the entertainment industry and more.
“Before you step into this business you’ve got to know who you are and which lines you won’t cross,” Rapsody said to the group and guests. “When I was young and looking at what I thought was success — platinum plaques and sold-out arenas — [I later realized] those are materialistic things.

Salt-n-Pepa are shaking things up for the holidays and their careers by landing a sweet acting gig opposite Taraji P. Henson. The ladies are playing Sugar N Spice in a skit for Taraji's "White Hot Holidays" TV special. The script has them sharing the camera with Taraji, as Mrs. Claus -- and Method Man as the tooth fairy! Fergie, Ying Yang Twins, Ciara and Faith Evans are also on the special, but only to rap and sing.

By now, you’re probably aware that The CW is no stranger to prime time crossovers. But usually, they involve series that occupy the same universe, such as its various DC TV shows, or The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Speaking of which, we just recently learned about this fall’s “Crisis on Earth-x,” the news of which made the fan base go bananas. Still, that hasn’t put the kibosh on other dream mashups that viewers – and even the stars – hope to see.
As you may recall, Arrow‘s own Stephen Amell said that he’d be “totally up for” a crossover with Supernatural a few months back. Obviously, this would be hard to execute from a storytelling standpoint and there may be a lot of red tape involved, but it’d be pretty cool to see nevertheless.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Girls Season 6 Episode 1 was, for the most part, par for the course – with one major exception. Hannah is now (finally and officially) a (reasonably) successful writer. In print!
The season premiere opened on the publication of Hannah's story about Jessa and Adam's relationship in the New York Times' Modern Love section. There's no doubt that this is a big deal for her career – it's a big deal for any writer, in real life, to land their work in the Times.
The Modern Love column – which is read by all of her family and friends (except, notably, Jessa) – managed to get her a meeting with an editor who assigns her a new story. One that's, predictably, completely wrong for her. But because she's Hannah, she does it anyway.

What do Sarah Paulson, Ellen DeGeneres and Rebel Wilson all have in common? No, it's not their blonde hair. It's not their witty sense of humor or even the fact all three of them are big names in Hollywood. Rather, the four ladies share a common characteristic of withholding the great talent of rapping Salt-N-Peppa's 1993 hit, "Shoop." Yes, Paulson joined DeGeneres and Wilson on the list of people who have shown off her rapping chops when she visited Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Thursday. He ended their time together by putting her on the spot, offering her a microphone to prove she knows all the words to the famous hip-hop song. "You're not going to make me do this!"...

Sarah Paulson has been screaming her head off on American Horror Story for six seasons now, but on Thursday, she used her voice in a very different way. During an appearance on The Tonight Show, host Jimmy Fallon decided to put her on the spot and ask her to prove her rapping skills. Sarah then grabbed a mic and completely crushed Salt-n-Pepa's hit "Shoop." It's really no wonder her girlfriend, Holland Taylor, is so in love with her. The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Justin Timberlake visited his buddy Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show Wednesday night, which usually means one thing: A new installment in their beloved, Roots-assisted "History of Rap" megamix. The pair wasted no time as the show opened with Timberlake and Fallon singing Jay Z and R. Kelly's "Fiesta" to kick off the dance party.

It's the throwback edition of Lip Sync Battle, pitting two emcees, Cheryl James and Sandra Denton — better known as Salt and Pepa, respectively — against each other. (Sorry, Spinderella.) Spoiler alert: The first battle is kind of rough, but they more than make up for it in the second round. Let's roll the clips!Battle 1: Salt's "Since U Been Gone" vs. Pepa's "Firework" Are our expectations too high? Salt and Pepa both feel like they "got this," but they don't: They pick big pop anthems that fizzle. Salt's "Since U Been Gone" doesn't really have any of the angst of the original, and Pepa's "Firework" is a limp noodle. This is a tough call if only because no one's heart really seems to be in it, and even though Salt obviously misses a cue, she seems to dig into the song more once the chorus gets going.

Maybe the "Lip Sync Battle" drama bar was just too high after Julianne Hough writhed to "I Just Had Sex" (in front of her brother!) and Stephen Merchant shoved a sock down his leather chaps to get extra "Dirrty." We had high hopes for Salt-n-Pepa's May 21 battle -- and they were Ok, but they did not push it far enough. They did not talk about sex, baby. It was relatively bland.
Cheryl "Salt" James started Round 1 with Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone." Sandra "Pepa" Denton countered with Katy Perry's "Firework":
Too tame. Not nearly the crazy we've come to expect.
In Round 2, they both upped their games and brought in back-up dancers. Salt had a good run with "It's Tricky" by Run-d.M.C. but Pepa won with her very '70s version of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive." This round was more successful,...

There are still twelve months to go before the world gets to see the newest adventures of Charlie Brown in the Peanuts movie, but as is the case with marketing in today’s cinematic climate, audiences are growing to expect teaser materials at least a year in advance. So, after dropping the first trailer earlier this month, 20th Century Fox has now revealed who will be voicing the iconic characters based on Charles M. Schulz’s original comic series.
The cast of characters in the CGI-animated romp all originate from the classic children’s strip comic of the same name. For the first new feature in 35 years involving Charlie, Lucy, Linus, Franklin, Peppermint Patty, Snoopy and Woodstock, the studio has chosen a range of up-and-coming child actors to lend their voices to the much-loved troupe.
It might be considered a gamble to place newcomers into such a well-known franchise, but...

Screen Syndicate, a side project of Southern Illinois-based Americana band Stace England and the Salt Kings, explores the fascinating history of Roger Corman’s New World Pictures and the exploitation films made by the company in the 1970s. The life of actress Roberta Collins — a Hollywood story of sadly unfulfilled promise — is the vehicle used to navigate the period. Collins lit up the screen in films like The Big Doll House, Women In Cages and Death Race 2000. But Collins was unable to break out of the B-movie grind, playing minor roles in increasingly poor productions before finally exiting the business. She died in obscurity in 2008. Screen Syndicate combines original songs, film clips, trailers, and other material into a unique live-music experience that pays tribute to Collins. The band has performed at numerous film festivals in the U.S. and Europe — appearing twice at Sliff — with shows about pioneering African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux and Cairo,...

Films from notables Nick Cave, Kevin Smith and Terry Gilliam, and another featuring Downton Abbey vet Dan Stevens are helping fill this weekend’s box office, despite studio blockbuster debuts for The Maze Runner and This Is Where I Leave You.
In all, 14 specialty films are debuting this weekend, at the front edge of awards season and the time of year when “serious” films hit the screens left and right. We have The Guest, with Stevens; The Zero Theorem by Gilliam; Smith’s Tusk; Tracks, the latest from the producers of The King’s Speech; and Cave’s doc 20,000 Days On Earth.
And, like a TV informercial, there’s more: the doc Pump, boundary-jumper Stop The Pounding Heart; and Swim Little Fish Swim. Just to fill out the marquees, we also have Tribeca-winning doc Keep On Keepin’ On; Flamenco, Flamenco; Hector And The Search For Happiness; Iceman; Hollidaysburg; and Not Cool.

Here's something you'll never hear me say about any reality show besides So You Think You Can Dance: I'm sad that the audition episodes are over. The show handles its tryout weeks with gusto, a lot of respect for its competitors, and more celebration than mockery. (Take note, American Idol.) Even host Cat Deeley, who makes only a few short cameos in each audition episode, is wonderfully sympathetic as a contestant interviewer. The fact that she lives an Emmy-less existence is a human injustice. Let's take this crusade to the streets.
As usual, I've got the five best auditions of the week, this time from the Salt Lake City tryouts. Did anyone wear a tabernacle-like hat and jive in tribute to Brigham Young? Did guest judge Adam Shankman weep an entire great salt lake into his diet green tea? Stay tuned for the unsurprising answers.

The So You Think You Can Dance auditions hit Salt Lake City this week, and guest judge Adam Shankman could not stop swearing. “Shut the f— up, you are amazing,” he screamed at the very first contestant after she had not said anything. Mary Murphy brought back the Hot Tamale Train for the first time in season 9, and Nigel Lythgoe informed a young man he “could have someone’s eye out with those nipples.” Just another day in the ballroom!

There has been a lot of viral activity on The Amazing Spider-Man front, which is all leading to a major event this Friday, May 11th, in 11 cities across America, with something big going down in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Austin, Tampa, Minneapolis, and New Orleans at noon.
What is happening in those cities? That has yet to be revealed, but its believed to involve an appearance by The Lizard, which, for those of you who grew up in the late 80s, might seem reminiscent of those big Toys R Us events, where major Marvel and Star Wars characters gathered to battle in the parking lot and sign autographs afterward. It seems likely that a choreographed fight between two men in a Lizard suit and a Spidey suit might become a reality. Which is pretty neat. That hasn't been done in a long time.
