“Furiosa’s” Jenny Beavan has been named as the recipient of this year’s “Career Achievement Award” by the Costume Designers Guild.

Past recipients of the Career Achievement Award include Francine Jamison-Tanchuck, Deborah L. Scott, Michael Kaplan, Ruth E. Carter, Joanna Johnston, Jeffrey Kurland, Ellen Mirojnick, Aggie Rodgers, Sharen Davis, April Ferry, Judianna Makovsky, Eduardo Castro, Julie Weiss, Sandy Powell, Marlene Stewart, Ruth Myers, Ann Roth, Milena Canonero, Albert Wolsky, Colleen Atwood and Theoni V. Aldredge.

“I am very honored to be receiving this award! How wonderful to be recognized by such a fabulous group… costume designers. The best!” said Beavan.

Former guild president Salvador Perez will be bestowed with the Distinguished Service Award.

Following a decorated Broadway revival in 2022, August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Piano Lesson” is getting the feature film treatment this fall at Netflix — and the streamer debuted its first trailer early Wednesday.

From director Malcolm Washington and starring John David Washington, the project costars Samuel L. Jackson (who was Tony-nominated for his turn in the 2022 stage production), Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, Jerrika Hinton, Gail Bean, Danielle Deadwyler and Corey Hawkins.

Bening has worked alongside costume designers such as Albert Wolsky and Julie Weiss, and was recognized for her special awareness of the role and importance of costume design. However, due to Covid, Bening was unable to accept the speech in person.

Francine Jamison-Tanchuck was presented with the career achievement award. She thanked mentors including Ann Roth and Edith Head.

Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut, based on novelist Percival Ellison’s Erasure, took home six Black Reel Awards including Outstanding Picture. Jefferson was the biggest single winner of the night. Jefferson also became the first person to sweep all the directing and writing awards in the same year. With awards season now fully in swing, this past weekend saw the Critics Choice Awards take place giving us our second glimpse of what we can expect the big winners to be come Oscar night.

‘Oppenheimer’ emerged as the biggest winner at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, bagging eight trophies that included Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.). ‘Barbie’ followed closely with six wins, including Best Comedy and Best Song (“I’m Just Ken”).

On the TV side, ‘The Bear,’ ‘Succession’ and ‘Beef’ won big, each taking multiple acting awards and winning best comedy series, drama series and limited series, respectively.

Beef won for best limited series as well as three acting awards, for Ali Wong, Steven Yeun and Maria Bello.

Nearly 40 years ago, costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck worked as a wardrobe supervisor on Steven Spielberg‘s “The Color Purple,” collaborating with mentor Aggie Guerard Rodgers on a film that would ultimately become a classic. “My job was to clothe a lot of the background ladies and day players and assist Aggie in the fittings,” Jamison-Tanchuck told IndieWire. “It was Whoopi Goldberg’s first major film, and Oprah Winfrey‘s, and the two of them were just incredible. The nominations for the 2024 Critics Choice Awards have been unveiled!

Last week, we learned the nominations for the television categories and today, we learned the nominations for the film categories.

Greta Gerwig‘s smash-hit Barbie received the most nominations of any film this year with 18. In fact, 18 nominations is the most of any movie in Critics Choice history! Last year’s Everything Everywhere All At Once received 14, which was the most at the time.

The Critics Choice Awards will air on Sunday (January 14) on The CW with Chelsea Handler returning as host.

“The Color Purple” director Blitz Bazawule hesitated to take on the latest incarnation of Alice Walker’s sacred text. However, when he revisited the book, the first line struck him as a way to navigate a familiar story and “keep expanding Celie’s imagination.”

In the new musical movie adaptation, as Celie (Fantasia Barrino) is bathing Shug (Taraji P. Henson), an old record plays on a gramophone in the background. But as the camera zooms in, the record player becomes a stage for Celie to express herself and her emotions. In a two-hour storyboard video film, the director had pre-visualized how Celie’s imagination would be integral to every aspect of bringing “The Color Purple” back to life.

The Oprah Winfrey Network will give viewers an inside look into the making of “The Color Purple” in the hour-long special “OWN Celebrates The New Color Purple,” which premieres Friday at 10 p.m. Et/Pt.

Oprah Winfrey, who executive produced the new adaptation, hosts the behind-the-scenes special, conducting interviews with the film’s cast and offering an intimate look at how the story became a cultural phenomenon. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). Visual effects are such a key part of the storytelling of “A New Hope.” Costume design is vital to the storytelling of “Phantom Thread.” And production design is so key in “Parasite,” “Avatar,” and “The Lord of the Rings” in so many different ways.

With that in mind, let’s take a look a closer look at some of the below-the-line categories, starting here with Best Production Design. We’re going to look at the last 10 winners in this category to work out if there is a pattern in the way the academy awards certain winners. The Oscars for design — Costume Design, Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling — are often awarded together to reward movies that have excelled in their costume creations, set building, and distinct makeup work. “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” won all three while “Black Panther” won both Costume Design and Production Design. Those two are fantasy films, which is a leading genre in the design categories. But period pictures, historical epics, sci-fi flicks, and even distinct contemporary films have also done well in these races.

Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg have reunited to revive “The Color Purple” into a movie musical, directed by Blitz Bazawule.

After debuting footage for distributors at CinemaCon last month, Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the new adaptation, which is set to premiere in North America on Dec. 25. The film will open internationally beginning Jan. 18, 2024.

The trailer features visually bold motifs as it takes audiences inside Celie’s headspace with “American Idol” winner Fantasia reprising her Broadway role, in her major motion picture debut. Will Smith made his return to late-night television on Monday when he appeared on The Daily Show With Trevor Noah for the first time since he slapped Chris Rock on the Dolby Theatre stage at this year’s Oscars.

When Noah asked the Academy Award winner about his journey in the months since the slap incident, Smith began by saying that it was “a horrific night.”

Our fifth Oscar nominee, “News of the World,” can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed last year’s Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored one of the other academy nominees, “Jojo Rabbit.”
