A show that focuses on the fairly conventional premise of a group of kids, a stern mom, and a bumbling dad doesn't necessarily have what it takes to become a smash hit. However, the stars certainly aligned for "Malcolm in the Middle." The show premiered in 2000 and ran for a solid seven seasons before concluding in May 2006. If you've never seen the show and only know the basic premise, it's easy to assume that the series simply rode the coattails of the 1990s sitcom high to success ... but as anyone familiar with the series can attest, you don't make it to season 7 without being a pretty watchable sitcom, which "Malcolm in the Middle" certainly was.
One of the show's secrets is casting. The pre-Walter White Bryan Cranston was so convincingly hilarious as the slapstick-happy father Hal that he nearly lost "Breaking Bad" over a certain "Malcolm in the Middle" scene.

Everyone knows sliced bread is the best thing to happen since Betty White. The iconic television star gained massive acclaim and fame with her role in The Golden Girls, and she filled her later acting career with countless cameos. Her inimitable presence brought immense charm and humor to any show.
One such cameo happened in 2004 when she appeared in Malcolm in the Middle. As expected from Betty White, the character oozes a mix of passion, wit, and talent. She shines brighter than everyone whenever she appears, and her appeal is as much her star power as her talent. To be more precise, Betty White pops up as Sylvia in the twentieth episode of Season 5, “Victor’s Other Family.” The episode debuted on May 9, 2004, and marked the series’ 105th entry.

Years before Tobey Maguire starred in 2002’s Spider-Man, and before Reese Witherspoon won an Oscar, the pair starred in the teen satire/comedy movie Pleasantville. The 1998 film is now streaming for free on Tubi. The film also stars Jeff Daniels, Joan Allen, Don Knotts, William H. Macy, and Jane Kaczmarek. It was nominated for three Academy Awards in 1999, including Best Music, Original Score, Best Costume Design, and Best Art Direction.
In the film, set in the 1990s, a strange television repairman, played by Don Knotts, is impressed that teenager David, played by Maguire, is so fiercely devoted to a 1950s television series. The mysterious technician then gives David and his sister, Jennifer, played by Witherspoon, a way to escape inside the TV show. Family sitcom The Middle was a massive hit for ABC throughout its nine-season run. Despite the show experiencing a resurgence in popularity, Patricia Heaton, who played matriarch Frances Heck, recently shot down the possibility of a reboot.
"The way they wrapped it up, where we got to flash-forward in the lives of the Heck family and see where they all ended up, it was so beautiful, and I think people have such a good feeling about the show," she told Yahoo! Entertainment. "The Middle is having such a resurgence on TikTok, of all places, that kids are rediscovering or discovering it for the first time. It's a beautiful thing."

Your favorite young genius and his dysfunctional family are coming back to TV screens this year. In December 2024, Malcolm in the Middle was announced to be returning with four new revival episodes on Disney+. While no official release date has been disclosed, TV Insider spoke with director Ken Kwapis about what fans can expect to see from the revival of such a beloved series. Kwapis, who directed 19 episodes of the original series on Fox, received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 2001 for his work as producer-director. Kwapis also directed 12 episodes of the popular sitcom The Office, for which he also received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Directing in 2007. “I’m not going to spill the beans yet,” smiled Kwapis. “But it’s wonderful to reconnect with the cast. They’re all coming back.” The revival will star original cast members Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek as Malcolm,...

Malcolm in the Middle owes its cult appeal to its endearing (and dysfunctional) characters. Lead star Frankie Muniz reflected on the show’s run and singled out its worst protagonist.
Frankie Muniz said he finally watched Malcolm in the Middle's entire run in 2017, 11 years after the series finale aired. He watched all the episodes with his wife and came to a sobering realization: his character Malcolm was the worst in the series. "[My wife] looked at me at the very end and she goes, 'You weren't acting at all. You are literally Malcolm,'" he told People. "And I'm like, 'I don't know how to take that because Malcolm sucked.' He was the worst character on that show!" Muniz's hot take just settled an ongoing debate since fans are divided between Hal, Malcolm, and Francis.

Disney+ is set to revive the beloved comedy series “Malcolm in the Middle” with a four-episode limited series marking the show’s 25th anniversary, featuring original star Frankie Muniz returning to the role that launched his career.
The upcoming series will follow a grown-up Malcolm, now married with a daughter, who becomes reconnected with his family during his parents’ 40th wedding anniversary celebration. Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek will reprise their roles as Malcolm’s parents, Hal and Lois.
Muniz, who has since pursued interests like NASCAR racing, surprised fans with candid insights about his character. In a recent interview with People magazine, he admitted to viewing Malcolm as “the worst character” after watching the entire series with his wife, Paige.

Despite his dysfunctional family roots, Frankie Muniz’s eponymous character is “right at home” on the set of the forthcoming Disney+ revival of the beloved aughts sitcom Malcolm in the Middle.

Though Muniz maintained that his character was “the worst” on the show and “sucked,” he added that he is “obviously so thrilled” to return to the Wilkerson clan and is excited “to get back on set with everybody.”

Bryan Cranston’s role as Walter White in Breaking Bad was so perfect that it almost touched the likes of iconic castings such as Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Daniel Craig as James Bond. Despite his relatively minor reputation in the peripheries of the television industry, it was a calling that Cranston was destined to serve in Breaking Bad and leave the series behind as his legacy.
Breaking Bad [Credit: AMC]
It is pointless to deny the magnitude of Breaking Bad as the series was elemental in launching the Second Golden Age of television alongside Mad Men. The AMC crime drama, after being picked up by Netflix, ascended into a modern-day classic whose existence would forever be engraved in pop culture history.
And yet, the network executives were a good sport about filming an alternate ending for Breaking Bad that completely disregarded and rebuffed the entire series.

When word of The Boroughs, a new series produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers, first got out more than two years ago, the supernatural/horror drama was referred to as “Stranger Things at a retirement home.”
Netflix pushed back at that description and the link between the two shows. Not every early 2000s Simpsons parody would make sense to audiences today, but thanks to Judge Judy’s stubborn refusal to stop making television shows, Judge Constance Harm is still culturally relevant. Since 2001, the overly stern magistrate, based on the daytime TV star, has been voiced by Malcolm in the Middle star Jane Kaczmarek.
When The Simpsons finally returns in March, the mid-season premiere (in which Bart gets involved with “celebrity DJ-ing”) will reportedly guest star My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Rachel Bloom and Kaczmarek, implying that Judge Harm will show up at some point.
Oddy enough, her first appearance on The Simpsons was in an episode that was inspired by real-world events, even beyond the existence of Judge Judy. Season 13’s “The Parent Rap” begins with Bart and Milhouse being arrested for stealing Chief Wiggum’s squad car. While Milhouse gets the lenient Judge Snyder in court, midway through Bart’s case,...

Long before she was a two-time Academy Award-winning actor able to tackle some of the toughest, weirdest roles in cinema and television, Emma Stone was just a young actor trying to make it in a cutthroat industry. After a number of TV guest spots in small roles, including a hilarious bit on "Malcolm in the Middle" where she played a bully beefing with the Wilkerson family matriarch, Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), Stone would eventually garner attention with the 2006 hit comedy "Superbad," which was responsible for both her trademark red hair and her career taking off. Before that, however, she played an integral but tiny role on the Disney Channel hit kids show "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody," although it's absolutely impossible to spot her.
"The Suite Life of Zack & Cody" followed twins Zack and Cody Martin (Dylan and Cole Sprouse), who live in the suite of the Tipton Hotel in Boston.

I know that title makes Renner sound a bit like a comedy (My Mother the AI), but the trailer for the new Frankie Muniz movie is actually a dark sci-fi thriller. The Malcolm in the Middle actor stars as a computer genius who invents an A.I. life coach to help him find love, but he realizes too late that he’s accidentally programmed his manipulative mother into the code.
“Bringing this story to life required a lead who could not only embody the brilliance of Renner, but also capture the emotional complexity of a man wrestling with forces far beyond his control. Remember those celebrities who seemed to be everywhere you looked? The ones who graced every magazine cover, starred in the biggest shows, and dominated entertainment news? The entertainment industry is known for its unpredictable nature, where fame can be as fleeting as a shooting star. For every Tom Cruise or Jennifer Aniston who has maintained their A-list status for decades, there are countless others who fade from the spotlight.

Malcolm in The Middle will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025, having premiered in 2000 as part of the Fox TV network’s iconic Sunday night lineup. Recently, its all-grown-up star Frankie Muniz, who played the titular Malcolm in all 151 sitcom episodes, per CinemaBlend, talked about his favorite and most memorable moments from the show on the Inside of You podcast.
Even though Malcolm in the Middle finished its seven-season run in 2006, the memory of shooting the series finale was still fresh in Muniz’s mind. “Favorite memory honestly was the last shot that we filmed and only because - I remember being sad the show was ending, right? But also excited because I was ready for whatever the future was gonna have to hold. And, at that point, I knew I was going to do racing and all that,” said the actor, who, after the series ended, went on to race...

Back in the old days, when sitcoms still ruled the entertainment world, Malcolm in the Middle proved to be one of those exceptional series that left viewers laughing and shedding tears all at the right times. Flaunting a perfect 100% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, it might as well be deemed the ultimate sitcom.
For around six stunning years, the said show continued to entertain fans and leave them baffled through the 151 episodes it delivered, spread over the course of 7 seasons. Then, after the seventh and final season, the series was officially canceled, ending the sitcom once and for all.

Bryan Cranston is confirmed to be returning for a reboot of Malcolm in the Middle — but in the meantime, check out his other classic TV show, Breaking Bad. It was recently confirmed that a Malcolm in the Middle revival is in the works for Disney+. Cranston will reprise his role as Hal, Frankie Muniz will reprise his role as Malcolm, and Jane Kaczmarek will reprise her role as Lois. The reboot will consist of four new episodes, and it’ll see Hal and Lois demanding that Malcolm attend their 40th wedding anniversary party with his daughter.
It could be a while before the Malcolm in the Middle reboot finally streams on Disney+, but Cranston has plenty of other classic TV shows to watch during the wait. For starters, there are seven still-relevant seasons of the original Malcolm in the Middle series to binge-watch in time for the show’s continuation.

Almost 25 years after the beloved sitcom first appeared on the small screen, Disney+ will host a revival of Malcolm in the Middle featuring much of the original cast. Debuting in 2000, the early Aughts staple concerns a dysfunctional family and the trials and tribulations of their child prodigy middle son, Malcolm (Frankie Muniz). Taking all the tropes of its genre and exaggerating them for humorous results, Malcolm in the Middle used pitch-black comedy for laughs in a way that helped it stand apart from a bevy of other sitcoms that dotted the TV landscape at the time.
With its clever use of post-production techniques, fourth-wall-breaking asides, and unusual gags that weren't found in other sitcoms, Malcolm in the Middle snagged an elusive Peabody Award along with the usual TV accolades. The series also helped to make a household name out of star Bryan Cranston, and it went off the air a...

Malcolm In The Middle is back for a four episode sequel series for Disney+, and details of the return are right here.
Before he gave one of the greatest perfomances on television as Walter White in Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston was Hal, the goofy, loveable Dad on Malcolm In The Middle, whose perfect comic timing is every bit as brilliant as his dramatic work – see the scene in one episode where he has to get rid of a spider as an example of that.
One of the first early 2000s sitcoms to popularise the single camera format, Malcolm In The Middle was created by Linwood Boomer, who previously produced the failed US adaptation of Red Dwarf.
The show followed the trials and tribulations of the Wilkerson family – father Hal (Cranston) is married to matriarch Lois (Jane Kaczmarek). There is eldest child Francis (Christopher Masterson), child prodigy Malcolm (Frankie Muniz), prankster...

Bryan Cranston is back with Malcolm In The Middle cast for a revival ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Before he became Walter White, Bryan Cranston was recognized as a character actor and a force to be reckoned with in television comedies. The actor, who reached unprecedented career heights with Breaking Bad later in his career, has Malcolm in the Middle to thank for bringing him to that platform. And thanking the comedy, he is — via a new revival.
That’s right! Cranston has decided to return to his roots, choosing his most popular on-screen comedy persona, Hal Wilkerson. The Breaking Bad and Your Honor actor will be reprising his role as Hal, alongside returning cast members Jane Kaczmarek and Frankie Muniz, who portrayed his on-screen wife Lois and son Malcolm, respectively. The sequel will directly arrive on Disney+ and will be a small affair with only four episodes and a limited storyline.
