“Black Warrant,” the hit Netflix series currently in the platform’s India Top 10 nearly three months after its premiere, was the focus of a panel at the ongoing Cinevesture International Film Festival in Chandigarh, India.
The discussion featured creator-showrunner Vikramaditya Motwane, producer Sameer Nair of Applause Entertainment, and lead actors Zahan Kapoor and Rahul Bhat, who explored the “synergy for success” that has made the prison drama a streaming standout.
Based on “Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer” by Sunil Gupta and journalist Sunetra Choudhury, the series chronicles Gupta’s 35-year career at India’s notorious Tihar prison, where he oversaw infamous inmates including serial killer Charles Sobhraj and and kidnappers Kuljeet Singh (alias Ranga Khus) and Jasbir Singh (alias Billa).
Motwane, also known for Netflix’s “Sacred Games,” explained that the adaptation process required narrowing the book’s extensive timespan. “When you read the book, it’s fantastic because it’s so dramatic.

Check Out Our Exclusive Interview With The Diplomat Director Shivam Nair! (Photo Credit – YouTube)
The Diplomat director Shivam Nair shot to fame with the television serial Sea Hawks in the late 1990s. Like many directors who came from the small screen, including his close friends Neeraj Pandey, Sriram Raghavan, Imtiaz Ali, and Anurag Kashyap, Shivam took a while to make it to the big screen but has since made a distinct name for himself.
Ahista Ahista (2006) was his debut film, followed by the brilliant Maharathi (2008), produced by Paresh Rawal and based on a Gujarati play. The film did not perform well, primarily because it was released in the 26/11 week, and it took Shivam seven years to make his next, Bhaag Johnny, his first for T-Series.
Shivam Nair’s old friend, Neeraj, then called him to direct his spin on Baby, the 2017 Naam Shabana, after which they co-directed Special Ops, among...

What Did Anurag Kashyap Say About John Abraham’s The Diplomat? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
John Abraham has become one of Bollywood’s leading faces in action and patriotic films. From Dhoom (2004), Force (2011), Madras Cafe (2013), to Parmanu (2018), and Batla House (2019), John’s filmography is dominated by intense, adrenaline-pumping roles. His ability to command the screen with his physicality and intense performances has made him a go-to choice for action-packed entertainers.
However, while his films have consistently performed well at the box office, critics often noted that his acting prowess remained overshadowed by the larger-than-life action sequences and patriotic themes. Now, with The Diplomat, directed by Shivam Nair, John Abraham is earning praise for a performance that strips away the heroics and instead delves into the complexities of a real-life character.

Anurag Kashyap’s Gulaal was released 16 years ago, and Subhash K Jha revisits the brutal drama where Shakespeare meets Quentin Tarantino.
Gulaal emblazons itself across the screen as a deft and brutal film on the culture of decadence in a typical north Indian setting. And it spares no room for niceties as it is a powerful portrait of a culture that thrives on bullying tactics. The homage to the cinema of Vishal Bhardwaj is rampant in Gulaal.
Somewhere in the brilliantly cohesive soundtrack, we even hear strains of Lata Mangeshkar’s ‘Pani pani re’ from Bhardwaj’s Maachis in the film where life is lived by the gun and the mantra for survival is deception.
The world of Gulaal is crowded, claustrophobic and potent. The writer-director spares us none of the details in bringing to life a world where unlicensed guns and unchecked lawlessness rule. This is the kingdom of anarchy.

Jyotika On Film Criticism! (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Tamil star Suriya has been going through a rough patch lately. In recent years, he hasn’t delivered a theatrical blockbuster, though some of his direct-to-ott releases have earned critical acclaim. Kanguva was expected to turn things around, generating massive pre-release buzz with its storyline spanning two time periods.
Background for the Uninitiated
Directed by Siva, Kanguva ultimately failed to captivate both audiences and critics. The lead actor, director, and producer had overhyped the film, which only worsened its reception when negative reviews started rolling in. In response, Suriya’s wife and actress Jyotika stepped in with a social media post defending the film.
Back then, she shared her perspective, expressing surprise at the reviews from the media and certain industry circles. According to her, Kanguva had strong positive aspects, such as its fight sequences featuring women and the young boy’s character arc.

Did Paiyaa almost have a different leading actress? (Photo Credit – Instagram/Prime Video)
Director N. Lingusamy recently spilled the beans on the behind-the-scenes intrigue that resulted in Tamannaah taking over and altering the history of the film.
The Casting Change: Nayanthara’s Exit
Little does everyone know that Nayanthara was Lingusamy’s top pick to be Charulatha in Paiyaa. However, the production team was pressed by the then-prevailing economic recession to cut some costs.
With a string of box office failures taking a toll on Nayanthara’s value in the market, the team asked her to lower her price.
But hold on to that thought! When she turned down the offer and negotiations collapsed, the movie was left without a leading lady, prompting Lingusamy to take a game-changing call.

Was Anurag Kashyap’s last directorial written for Mohanlal? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Anurag Kashyap’s Malayalam film Rifle Club and Tamil film Maharaja received widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences. In recent years, he has shifted his focus from Bollywood to the South Indian film industry.
The Mohanlal Connection: What Could Have Been?
But did you know that one of his last Bollywood directorial films was originally supposed to be a Malayalam film? Yes, you read that correctly! Kennedy, his last feature-length Bollywood film—which has yet to be theatrically released to the general public—was initially envisioned as a Mollywood movie with Mohanlal in the lead. The film was supposed to be directed by Anurag Kashyap’s longtime collaborator and cinematographer, Rajeev Ravi, but unfortunately, it didn’t materialize. Instead, the story was reworked into Kennedy.
Sudhir Mishra was the one who initially told this story to Anurag Kashyap.

Prakash Jha’s Jai Gangaajal which clocks nine years on March 4, was a bit of a con job, at least as far as Priyanka Chopra was concerned. She ostensibly played the Shero cop in this anti-corruption clarion call while the director, Prakash Jha, played the villain.
The credit titles lied. They mentioned Priyanka Chopra first and Prakash Jha last when, in fact, Jha virtually leads the show. In a film filled with enough villains to populate an entire village of perverse wrongdoers, only Jha’s character has a graph. As a subordinate cop, he goes from abject corruption to haloed redemption, all within a running time of two and a half hours.
I say ‘running’ time with a purpose, as a lot of the characters in this film—and as usual in a Prakash Jha film — there are so many people in the plot, living and dead, running across the...

Actor-turned-director Parambrata Chatterjee’s thirteenth directorial venture is not an easy watch. It is verbose (so either you are fluent in Bengali or a fast reader), deeply tragic, and unabashedly resilient in its quest for the essence of life within the marital domain. Parambrata Chatterjee builds on the mounting tension to a nerve-wracking degree. There are no pockets of relief in the storytelling, no smile breaks, no humorous interludes. Throbbing with tension and forebodings of impending mortality Ei Raat Tomar Amar is a relentlessly grim tale of a marriage being rocked by piercing questioning on its fiftieth anniversary.
What is the genesis of this Bergmanesque marital drama?

Why Was Bobby Deol’s Character Was Mute In Animal? ( Photo Credit – Instagram; YouTube )
Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal became one of 2023’s biggest blockbusters, known for its intense action, deep emotional conflicts, and bold storytelling choices. Among its most intriguing aspects was Bobby Deol’s character, who remains completely mute throughout the film. Despite having minimal screen time, Bobby’s presence was chilling, making his silent menace even more impactful.
In a genre where high-stakes verbal confrontations between the hero and villain are a norm, Vanga took a risk by eliminating that dynamic entirely. In a recent interview, he explained why he made this unconventional, creative decision and how it contributed to the film’s overall impact.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga Did Not Want Any ‘Dialoguebaazi’ Throughout The Film
Traditionally, Indian cinema thrives on ‘dialoguebaazi,’ especially in action films where the hero and villain engage in explosive verbal battles before clashing physically.

Sanya Malhotra made her Bollywood debut in 2016 with Dangal, playing Babita Phogat alongside Aamir Khan. The film became a massive success, but Malhotra didn’t settle for conventional roles. Over the years, she built a diverse filmography, often portraying strong, independent women in both mainstream and independent films. Her recent performance in Mrs. (2024) further cemented her reputation as one of the most versatile actors of her generation. The film’s success, coupled with the popularity of her previous projects like Kathal (2023) and Meenakshi Sundareshwar (2021), has kept her in the spotlight, with all three movies trending on Netflix for weeks.
Beyond acting, Malhotra has also garnered significant attention for her recent collaboration with singer Sunidhi Chauhan. Vineet, how has Chhaava changed your life?
Sir, after Chhaava, it feels like I am experiencing something new, the experiences that I am having; I have never experienced anything like this. I have been a part of the Indian film industry for more than 20 years; it has been around 23 years. But I have never had this experience. In fact, when Anurag Kashyap’s Mukkabaaz came in 2017, where I played the lead, even then, I did not experience anything like this.

Fourteen years ago, Saqib Saleem and Saba Azad debuted with Y-Films’ Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge. I’m sure neither the actors nor the fans of that film, including yours truly, ever imagined seeing these two actors together in something like Zee 5’s Crime Beat, all these years later. I don’t have to tell you that the latest show is drastically different from Saleem and Azad’s debut film in every aspect. It is still a nice, perhaps unplanned, reunion. But if I have to point out the things that actively hurt Crime Beat, then the romance between Saleem and Azad’s characters should be at the top of the list. There is a professional rivalry angle at play as well, which works out.
Crime Beat, of course, is an eight-episode adaptation of author Somnath Batabyal’s 2013 novel, The Price You Pay. I got curious about the source material after getting this assignment,...

In Natesh Hegde’s “Tiger’s Pond,” an idyllic south Indian hamlet reveals treacherous political depths. However, despite its measured and deliberate vistas, the movie’s loosely tethered narrative comes undone. Its textures may be alluring, even haunting at times, but its restraint ultimately proves sanitizing when its story ought to feel more visceral, if only to capture the ghoulishness — the physical and emotional violence — lurking beneath its pristine surface.
Achyut Kumar plays Prabhu, a pitiless small-town businessman running for local office with the help of his right-hand enforcer, Malabari (Dileesh Pothan). Unbeknownst to them, the duo’s professional and personal entanglements have long been crisscrossed. Prabhu’s diligent younger brother Venkati (Natesh) plans to marry Malabari’s sister Devaki (Bindu Raxidi), but the caste inequity between their families is sure to eventually rear its head.
This impending personal implosion is just one of several parallel threads that never fully coalesce.

After breaking records, the actor is back with another story which is horrific and Crazxy at the same time! The film is a suspense thriller and the trailer intrigues you to the highest order!
Sohum Shah plays a good Surgeon, a bad father, and a questionable human being, turning the story into an ultimate horror when his daughter gets kidnapped! The trailer immediately reminds you of a lot of chasing-for-daughter suspense thrillers – be it Sushmita Sen’s Samay, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Jazbaa, or Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly!

He is a bit of a wet blanket, cautious to the point of being boring. She is a firebrand and a loose canon indiscreet to the point of being self-ruinous. And it is their suhaag raat when …well, all hell breaks loose.
In summation itself, Dhoom Dhaam on Netflix sounds like fun with a gun on the run. And it is! Sprightly, gamely, prankish, and faithfully wedded to levity, this is the kind of you-won’t-believe-what-happened-last-night adventures that have us holding on to our seats.
The episodic antics of Veer and Koyal are written with some leeway for intelligence. Often, such madcap adventures use zaniness as an excuse to plaster the narration with icky abomination. Dhoom Dham remains steadfast in its search for a refined caper. This could be a cleaned-out Anurag Kashyap flick, but it’s a lot funnier than what we see in the so-called dark comedies.

18 years ago, Aurag Kashyap’s drama Black Friday released. Subhash K Jha revisits the film that starred Pavan Malhotra, Kk Menon, and Aditya Srivastav.
Recreating the events leading up to the ‘Bombay’ blasts (there was no Mumbai back then) on 12 March 1993, Anurag Kashyap’s clenched drama on the second-worst terror attack in Mumbai is a source of constant shock. On each viewing, you will come across new facets of the dark, diabolic characters plotting a conspiracy that still boggles the mind.
The extraordinary cast adds considerably to the palate of pulsating action. Watch out especially for Pavan Malhotra as Tiger Memon, K K Menon as inspector Rakesh Maria, and Aditya Srivastava Badshah Khan. Oh, didn’t I tell you? This film, for once, names and shames real-life terrorists.

Some films just get you interested for all the wrong reasons. Think about it. This is a sex comedy about a bored and boring man who wants to pep up his life with a bit of wife-swapping… hardly the kind of theme and film that would qualify as little more than an effort to titillate audiences with a whole lot of junk feud in the domestic ambience.
Strangely and refreshingly Mixed Doubles, which completes 19 years on February 10, transcends the inherent limitations of its genre. The pincer-sharp dialogues (Anurag Kashyap) and a handful of believable actors who seem to understand the inner world of their urbane characters help to create a sense of lived-in reality in this brief film about giggly grief.

In Dev.D , Anurag Kashyap at last shed his obstinate inaccessibility as a filmmaker. More a homage to Sanjay Leela Bhansali than litterateur Saratchandra Chatterjee’s Devdas, Kashyap’s Dev.D is that deep liberating, lascivious, luscious, provocative, tantalizing, and tragic view of tragic hedonism, ruinous self-indulgence, and vain miscommunication that Saratchandra barely thought about but couldn’t articulate.

Bejoy Nambiar’s second feature film David (after Shaitaan) interconnects the lives of three characters named David, played with outstanding conviction by actors belonging to three different generations. They three protagonists who by chance share the same name didn’t have to be linked in the plot at all. Each David occupies a distinctive emotional spatial and chronological dimension. Each story is told with a muted flourish that eschews the flamboyant edginess of a recent, highly favoured and over-flavoured genre of Hindi cinema…you know the Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj genre where the characters are darkly drawn from life’s most somber colours.
Nambiar’s universe is populated by victims who refuse to bow down to what we call destiny and what in many circumstances is plain cowardice. In the hard-hitting story about a young rock musician’s conflict with religious fundamentalism Vinay Virmani(a prized find) confronts Hindu radical...

Laughter Chefs Season 2 Review: A Laughter Riot! (Photo Credit – Instagram)
After Bigg Boss 18, a new show has replaced the slot, and in my opinion, this is so much better than the cringe content Salman Khan’s show offered. Laughter Chefs season 2 has arrived with a bang, and honestly, I had very few expectations from this season since I was a fan of the first season and believed that the new cast might be that organically funny!
The first season of the show features six pairs – Ankita Lokhande – Vicky Jain, Arjun Bijalani – Karan Kundrra, Aly Goni – Rahul Vaidya, Reem Shaikh – Jannat Zubair, Krushna Abhishek – Kashmera Shah, and Sudesh Lehri – Nia Sharma and if you haven’t watched it, you definitely can binge it some weekend since it is a laughter riot!
Second season retained some of them and mixed the lot with a lot of Bigg Boss contestants. But the start...

A great director and a great actor that are Vetrimaaran and Vijay Sethupathi are capable of making a mess together.
The fault really doesn’t lie with the Star. How is Sethupathi to blame if director Vetrimaaran, in all his wisdom, decided to split Viduthalai into two parts due to the inordinate length of the original content?
Director Vetrimaaran is to Tamil cinema what Anurag Kashyap tries to be for Hindi cinema. His hard-hitting, raw, and blunt indictment of a corrupt and insensitive establishment has often labelled Vetrimaaran a rebel with a cause.
With Vidhuthalai Part 2 now streaming on Amazon, I really feel it’s time for a pause. We have seen enough police brutality and social inequality in Vetrimaaran’s cinema. In Vidhuthalai, a lot of it appears redundant, not in the social but in the cinematic context. In how many ways can the director show tribals being showered...
