Free TV Networks, the digital multicast television outlet launched by industry veteran Jonathan Katz two years ago, is gearing up to debut its fourth network.
Busted (stylized as Busted), will offer rebroadcasts of reality-based, true-crime series like “Cops: Reloaded,” “World’s Wildest Police Videos,” “Customer Wars,” Court Cam,” “Jail” and “Neighborhood Wars.”
The network will launch on March 1, and has already inked distribution agreements with Nexstar Media Group, HC2 Broadcasting, Gray Media and the E. W. Scripps Company, allowing it to reach 90 percent of U.S. households with a TV set, the company said on Thursday.
“With riveting unscripted series, Busted is the only dedicated broadcast channel that takes audiences on vicarious real-life ride-alongs to witness justice in action,” Katz said on Thursday. “While the migration from cable forces many legacy media businesses to contract, Free TV Networks continues to grow as more and more value-conscious consumers combine antenna usage with streaming.

These days, Kat Dennings can be seen playing Tim Allen's daughter in the hit ABC series Shifting Gears. However, more than two decades ago, she first played the daughter of late Full House star Bob Saget in a short-lived TV sitcom.
Back in 2001, Dennings and Saget co-starred in Raising Dad, a series that aired on The WB. In a new interview with People, Saget was remembered fondly by Dennings, who recalled how "protective" he had been with her on the set. While decades have since gone by, with Saget sadly passing away in 2022, Dennings has not forgotten the kindness that the legendary funnyman had shown her during the time they worked together on their TV show.

Full House star John Stamos claims Bob Saget's death is the reason why he isn't interested in doing another reboot of the classic family sitcom.

Nearly half of small businesses in the United States are family businesses–and, more often than not, founders’ significant others play key roles in those companies. In the creator industry, it’s no different: there are millions of content creators whose partners are involved in sharing the workload of their channels, either as onscreen co-stars or as offscreen camerapeople, producers, and managers.
So what happens if they break up?
Well, legally speaking, it all gets very messy very quickly. That’s according to longtime creator lawyer Jonathan Katz, who has represented a number of clients in this exact situation.
The first thing to think about, he says, is who actually owns the rights to the channel’s content. You may look at a channel where one person is its entire onscreen presence, and the channel is named after them, and there has never been another person present on camera with them,...

Broadcast television service Free TV Networks has hired Suzanne Satterfield to serve as its new general counsel, the company announced on Monday.
Satterfield joins Free TV Networks from Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd), where she worked as a trusted advisor to the company’s legal department for 16 years. During her time at Wbd, she helped the company navigate the complex world of content licensing and acquisition, original programming and other legal matters. She also helped launch Wbd’s Max streaming service in Europe.
At Free TV Networks, Satterfield will do much of the same work, with a specific focus on the company’s multicast networks. She won’t have to move too far from her former home, as Free TV Networks operates as a joint venture between Wbd and two other media companies, Lionsgate and Gray Media.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have a seasoned lawyer like Suzanne join our world-class team.

Free TV Networks, the broadcast-focused joint venture being spearheaded by industry veteran Jonathan Katz, has launched its latest multicast network Dare — although under a different, but familiar, name.
On Monday, Katz affirmed Dare will immediately rebrand to Defy after absorbing the reality-based content library from a similarly-named channel that was recently wound down by the E. W. Scripps Company. This week, Scripps replaced their version of Defy TV with a simulcast of streaming network Ion Plus.
“With an existing large and growing audience, the Defy network features distinctive, compelling, and, above all, entertaining programming that viewers truly can’t get enough of,” Katz said in a statement. “Defy offers value-conscious consumers a differentiated and world-class reality channel delivered for free, over-the-air, with addictive series proven to deliver for advertisers.”

Three years ago, the E. W. Scripps Company pulled its multicast network Ion Plus from broadcast TV as it worked to diversify its over-the-air multicast offerings.
Now, Scripps has decided the time is right for Ion Plus to make its triumphant return to over-the-air TV.
On Monday, Scripps will shut down its Defy TV network and replace it on Ion-owned stations and third-party affiliates with a simulcast of the Ion Plus Fast channel, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The relaunch of Ion Plus on broadcast TV will make it instantly available in more than 90 percent of American homes that previously received Defy TV. The channel will also continue to be available on Fast platforms like The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus and Freevee.
Defy TV launched three years ago, offering reality shows and knowledge-based programming that was geared toward young male viewers.

This was not the case when I interviewed TV comedy legend Jonathan Katz over the phone. Court TV, which relaunched in the U.S. in 2019 after an 11-year hiatus, has arrived in the UK via an initial deal with pay-tv giant Sky. The first batch of programming will include airing the trials of those accused in the George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery cases, as well as the R Kelly trial, which is currently ongoing.
The timing of the launch coincides with the 25th anniversary of the O.J. Simpson murder trial verdict. To mark it, Court TV will present a marathon of its 25-episode documentary series OJ25, which looks back at the case.
“There’s been nothing like Court TV in the United Kingdom until now. American crime dramas have long been a staple on television worldwide, including the UK, while global consumer interest in the real-life drama of true-crime programming has skyrocketed, with American reality crime content as the most-watched,” said Jonathan Katz, president and CEO of Katz Networks,...

Court TV, the channel that covers U.S. criminal trials, has launched in the U.K. on Comcast’s Sky network, with more distribution deals expected soon.
One of Court TV’s most high-profile cases in the coming months will focus on the four Minneapolis police officers who will be tried in the death of George Floyd, which launched a national movement on race in America. Another case coming up on Court TV centers on three white men accused of murder in the death of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man who was shot while jogging through a south Georgia neighborhood.
Court TV’s U.K. channel will provide viewers access to, and analysis of, true-life courtroom dramas taking place in the U.S. today, from opening proceedings all the way through to the verdict. Daytime trial coverage in the U.S. will air in primetime in the U.K. given the time difference.

H. Jon Benjamin‘s voice is instantly recognizable to many people but, as he tells us in our recent webchat (watch the video above), it’s not something that he ever planned on. “I started doing comedy in Boston, Massachusetts in the early ’90s and I didn’t really know about voice acting,” he says. Everything started to change when Jonathan Katz, a friend and fellow stand-up, approached Benjamin about providing a voice for his small animated show, “Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist,” on Comedy Central. From then on, he has been one of the most prominent voice actors in the industry, much to the surprise of Benjamin himself. “I had no intention of doing it for a living and I’m still shocked that I do.”

Harvey Weinstein’s rape trial in New York, which is slated for September, will headline gavel-to-gavel courtroom coverage on the reborn Court TV.
The network, reactivating a TV brand that revolutionized trial coverage as much as ESPN did sports or CNN did news, relaunched in May as a multicast network operated by E.W. Scripps-owned Katz Broadcasting. During a panel session Saturday at TCA summer press tour, executives were challenged about their claims that Court TV will be “the only network” covering the Weinstein trial gavel-to-gavel.
They conceded that they cannot legally broadcast live from inside the courtroom at New York Supreme Court in Manhattan, which will be the site of a full-on media circus. But Court TV’s unique DNA, they maintained, will create a unique experience for viewers amid the scrum.

Court TV is back in session. The cable TV channel that once carried gavel-to-gavel live coverage of high-profile trials will be revived by a new owner, nearly a dozen years after it was shuttered by Turner Broadcasting.
Katz Networks, a division of E.W. Scripps Co., plans to revive Court TV as a new channel designed to be distributed via local TV stations as a multicast offering as well as by MVPDs and streaming platforms starting in May. Katz has acquired the Court TV moniker and some 100,000 hours of vintage Court TV programming from Turner, now owned by At&T.

Court TV is set to return to television via Katz Networks, which is part of The E.W. Scripps Company, in May 2019. The new 24/7 version will be available for cable, satellite, over-the-air and over-the-top carriage.
The original Court TV signed off in 2008. Before then, it ran for more than 20 years and gained mainstream attention for providing gavel-to-gavel coverage of the O.J. Simpson, the Menendez brothers, and Casey Anthony murder trials.
“Court TV was a Top-20 cable network and at the height of its popularity when the network was taken off the air in 2008,” said Jonathan Katz, president and CEO of Katz Networks. “Today, while consumer interest in the real-life drama of true-crime programming is at an all-time high, there is no dedicated daily court coverage on television. We expect the new Court TV to fill that void on cable, satellite, over-the-air and over-the-top.”

While it was always... Read More...

The YouTube star Hank Green, who established the popular vlogbrothers channel with his brother, John, in 2007, as well as VidCon -- the world’s largest online video convention -- in 2010, will launch this month a nonprofit organization called the Internet Creators Guild (Icg) that aims to be a resource and support system for digital influencers.
Icg will provide creators with business and contracts advice, and also interact with the press as well as video platforms on behalf of creators, according to Fast Company, which was first to report the news. The organization will be funded by a grant from VidCon, as well as membership dues, which are $60 per year. Its first order of business will be creating a website that will comprise basic information, including how to deal with copyright strikes, when to ban commenters, how to use copyrighted music, and how to best work with brands and MCNs.
Laura Chernikoff, who has worked with the Green brothers for years and currently serves as the guest manager at VidCon, will leave the company after next week’s gathering to serve full-time as the executive director of Icg. While Green won’t work directly with Icg day-to-day, he will serve on a separate advisory board. Helming the organization alongside Chernikoff will be a board of directors comprising six bold-faced YouTube stars, including: filmmaker Anna Akana, gaming creators Satchell Drakes and Aureylian, vloggers Ashley Mardell and Olan Rogers, and beauty guru Wendy Ayche. Actor and entertainment lawyer Jonathan Katz will serve on the board as well.

In between Mystery Science Theater 3000 and South Park, Comedy Central's biggest breakout was a cheaply made animated show called Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. Co-created by comedian Jonathan Katz and animator/producer Tom Snyder, it starred Katz as the titular shrink and his relationships with his receptionist (Laura Silverman) and his son (H. Jon Benjamin, now of Archer and Bob's Burgers fame). The show was fleshed out by comedians like Ray Romano, Dom Irrera, Dave Attell, Louis C.K., Denis Leary, Jon Stewart, and Janeane Garofalo. The show last aired in 2002, but a few years back, Katz dusted off his...

To whet our appetites, we talked to showrunner Loren Bouchard and star H. Jon Benjamin about what plots, guests, and holiday-themed high jinks we can expect from the Fox comedy’s fourth year.
Let’s start with the premiere: ”The family goes camping,” says Bouchard. “But it ends poorly for them.” Adds Benjamin, “Diarrhea is involved. But it’s in a river and disperses quickly. And there wasn’t a reservoir as far as I know,...
