Do audiences ever ask for a History Lesson? Robert Altman gives them a smart, if diffuse, image of America as a showbiz invention, commercialized and packaged. Paul Newman is the prepackaged white hero surrounded by a jolly circus; Buffalo Bill’s trick seems to be to get his colleagues, the dispossessed minorities and especially the vanquished Native Americans to cooperate with his self-aggrandizing fantasy. One of Altman’s better scattershot ensembles sketches an amusingly hollow Buffalo Bill in Paul Newman, but the director’s style keeps emotional involvement at arm’s length… make that telephoto lens’ length.

The original Broadway production opened in 1982 and ran for 729 performances, starring Raul Julia. The musical won five Tony Awards, including best musical, and has enjoyed a number of revivals.

Constance Cummings: Stage and film actress ca. early 1940s. Constance Cummings on stage: From Sacha Guitry to Clifford Odets (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Flawless 'Blithe Spirit,' Supporter of Political Refugees.”) In the post-World War II years, Constance Cummings' stage reputation continued to grow on the English stage, in plays as diverse as: Stephen Powys (pseudonym for P.G. Wodehouse) and Guy Bolton's English-language adaptation of Sacha Guitry's Don't Listen, Ladies! (1948), with Cummings as one of shop clerk Denholm Elliott's mistresses (the other one was Betty Marsden). “Miss Cummings and Miss Marsden act as fetchingly as they look,” commented The Spectator. Rodney Ackland's Before the Party (1949), delivering “a superb performance of controlled hysteria” according to theater director and Michael Redgrave biographer Alan Strachan, writing for The Independent at the time of Cummings' death. Constance Cummings: Actress in minor Hollywood movies became major London stage star. Constance Cummings: Actress went from Harold Lloyd and Frank Capra to Noël Coward and Eugene O'Neill Actress Constance Cummings, whose career spanned more than six decades on stage, in films, and on television in both the U.S. and the U.K., died ten years ago on Nov. 23. Unlike other Broadway imports such as Ann Harding, Katharine Hepburn, Miriam Hopkins, and Claudette Colbert, the pretty, elegant Cummings – who could have been turned into a less edgy Constance Bennett had she landed at Rko or Paramount instead of Columbia – never became a Hollywood star. In fact, her most acclaimed work, whether in films or – more frequently – on stage, was almost invariably found in British productions. That's most likely why the name Constance Cummings – despite the DVD availability of several of her best-received performances – is all but forgotten.

In December of 1961, I was able to get—through the kindoffices of my friend Nancy Donahue, who introduced me to her agent Deborah Coleman—an audition for Arthur Kopit's play "Oh Dad, Poor Dad…" (the title is actually longer than that), to be directed by Jerome Robbins. Jerry liked my audition, but he'd never heard of me, so he kept calling me back, and at every callback I got worse. Finally, on my sixth audition, I arrived and was asked to read opposite a young woman named Barbara Harris. It will always be one of the magical moments of my life. She began to speak, and the role I was auditioning for roared to life in me again. We both were cast that day.And then I began, in rehearsal, to learn her process. I'm not sure I've ever experienced a process like it. I'll just say I learned what it was.

When, on Dec. 30, David Sheward filed his critique of the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players' production of "The Mikado," the reviewing year ended for Back Stage. During 2010, Sheward and co–head critic Erik Haagensen reported on more than 250 theater and cabaret shows and, thanks to their responsibilities as members of the New York Drama Critics' Circle and the Drama Desk, saw many other offerings they didn't review. Rather than present yet another top 10 list of the "best" shows of the year, Sheward and Haagensen decided that a publication serving actors should salute actors. What follows is each man's selection of 10 memorable performances—by five women and five men—seen in 2010. Not the "best," not the "most," not ranked in any order, simply 10 performances that were so outstanding they wanted to salute them. Ten is an arbitrary limit. Without question, there were other performances that were as memorable as these.

Greer Opens Up About Fellini Affair
Famed feminist writer Germaine Greer once enjoyed an affair with legendary Italian moviemaker Federico Fellini.
The Female Eunuch author claims to have struck up a romance with La Dolce Vita director after he invited her to Italy in 1975 to audition for a role in his 1976 movie Fellini's Casanova.
Greer turned down the part, but subsequently enjoyed a brief relationship with the critically-acclaimed filmmaker, who was married to actress Giulietta Masina from 1943 until his death in 1993.
The author revealed the affair in an article written for Britain's Guardian newspaper, insisting she decided to divulge the details of the secret romance after seeing Oscar-nominated 2009 movie Nine, which was based on Fellini's semi-autobiographical 1963 film 8 1/2.
She writes, "I caught glimpses of Penelope Cruz in a flounced red baby-doll nightie... and Sophia Loren looking like an Aztec mask, and Daniel Day-Lewis getting out of bed with his trousers on, but I was not tempted. I will not have my Fellini rewritten by Arthur Kopit, who wrote the musical, or Anthony Minghella or Michael Tolkin, who wrote the (Nine) screenplay."
She goes on to describe her first sexual encounter with the moviemaker, but admits the romance eventually fizzled out because of her hectic schedule.
She adds, "The relationship was self-limiting because I wasn't available... Sexual athletes are tuppence a dozen. Fellini was a many-sided genius. I do not hope to meet his like again."...

Among the movies available during the long hours of my flight from London to Sydney was Rob Marshall's Nine, a reworking of Fellini's 8½. As I flicked back and forth through the menu, I caught glimpses of Penélope Cruz in a flounced red baby-doll nightie with a built-in push-up bra – could we have worn such things in the 1960s? – and Sophia Loren looking like an Aztec mask, and Daniel Day-Lewis getting in and out of bed with his trousers on, but I was not tempted. The Nine soundtrack. For there to be a winner, there must by extension be a loser. All the box-office chatter for the last month or so has been about James Cameron’s Avatar, with the 3D whizzbang-fest breaking records like a steroid-boosted sprinter. But while Cameron’s blue baby has been gobbling up cash in the fashion of a money-eating dinosaur, what of those flicks that the movie-going public might have overlooked in their rush to grab a second, third or fourth helping of Avatar action? Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes seems to have escaped reasonably unscathed (in spite of being a teensy bit rubbish), but Rob Marshall’s Nine would appear to have been a major casualty – with the all-star musical grossing less than $20m to date. Avatar has probably taken more than that in the time it has taken you to read to this bit of the review.

By Susan Granger - After helming .Chicago. to Oscar glory, director Rob Marshall tackles .Nine,. inspired by Federico Fellini.s self-reflective, surreal 1963 art-film .8 ½. which, in turn, spawned the 1982 Tony-winning Broadway musical with a book by Arthur Kopit. But it.s much more of a challenge. Unlike .Chicago,. which has an easily definable plot and characters, along with a memorable, melodic score, .Nine. revolves around a brilliant but totally egocentric film director who is going through a mid-life crisis and searching for existential salvation among the various women who have been pivotal in his life.

It's been roughly seven years since Rob Marshall's Chicago kicked-off the return to favor of the movie musical, a genre he's now returning to with his third feature film Nine . Based on the 1982 musical by Arthur Kopit and Mario Fratti with songs by Maury Yeston and influenced by Federico Fellini's autobiographical magnum opus 8 1⁄2 , it stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Guido Contini, one of Italy's top filmmakers who has hit a wall while trying to write his next film. With the eyes of his country on him and an entire crew and his Scandinavian starlet (Nicole Kidman) waiting for him to produce a script, Guido must work through his issues with women while trying to keep his neglected wife Claudia (Marion Cotillard) away from his needy mistress Carla (Penelope Cruz). Daniel Day-Lewis is the creative soul of snazzy, sexy 'Nine' Seldom have so many gorgeous women (or Oscar winners) appeared in one movie but there's more to "Nine" than pretty faces. Director Rob Marshall's period musical follow-up to "Chicago" is a movie version of the 1982 Broadway musical (as well as its later revival) that complements its sexy musical numbers with a poignant lesson about people who make movies for a living. This dramatic addition by screenwriters Anthony Minghella and Michael Tolkin, working from the musical's book by Arthur Kopit, which was based on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical film "8 1/2", might not stand out like actress Kate Hudson shimmying in a mini skirt but it does make the elaborate dance sequences by choreographer John DeLuca meaningful. Overflowing with designer clothes, perfectly coiffed hair and the most exquisite lingerie imaginable, "Nine" has enough glamour to stuff "Vogue" magazine for the next 100 years.

There was no shortage of directors on the London set of Nine. They came in all sizes, shapes and dimensions: the real, the reel and the creatively imagined. Rob Marshall from Chicago, the movie that brought musicals back into box-office favor, was the real muscle behind this $80.5 million musical remake of 8 1/2, and even he was obliged to do a deep bow to his film's cinematic roots.Hovering over Nine are the reel ghosts of 8 1/2—Marcello Mastroianni pretending to be Federico Fellini in the throes of filmmaker panic, careening into production without inspiration or script. For relief, their Guido takes a sharp left into Libidoland, consoling himself by conjuring up all the women he's loved (in his own fashion). "One of the joys of this," declares Marshall, "is that it isn't the sort of normal musical. It follows something very different. It doesn't take a narrative trajectory. It's in a man's mind,...

Back in 1982, the Broadway musical Nine opened and won a Tony for Best Musical. An adaptation of Federico Fellini’s semi-autobiographical film classic 8-1/2 with a book by Arthur Kopit, music by Maury Yeston, and direction by the great Tommy Tune, the show was a perfect blending of the cerebral and heart, a slightly tongue-in-cheek exploration of the creative process, and a fond but critical look at a man whose relationships with women were based either on his adoration for his mother or his pleasant encounter with a robust prostitute when he was a mere child.
Helping spur the show on to greatness were Raul Julia as Guido Contini, the solipsistic director; Karen Akers as his wife; plus Anita Morris, Camille Saviola, and the knock-‘em-dead Liliane Montevecchi as several of the women in his life.

Director Rob Marshall and much of his starry cast walked the red carpet in London last night for the world premiere of Nine, an adaptation of the musical by Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston which opened on Broadway in 1982 and which, you'll have heard, is loosely based on Federico Fellini's 8½ (1963). Tim Teeman was there for the Times: "If you haven't seen or don't know the original musical, and if you are seduced by the spectacular trailers, you might expect Nine to be a glittering cavalcade of frouffed and bouffed leading ladies (Penélope Cruz and Nicole Kidman among them), prowling slinkily around leading man Daniel Day-Lewis. But Nine is one of those rare things: a sombre musical, as gritty as it is glittery."...

"Nine" is the movie that the detractors of "Chicago" accused it of being. Like "Chicago," Rob Marshall is working from a major Broadway show. He's made a very specific stylistic choice, dictated in no small part by the work of a very strong screenwriter. On "Chicago," it was braniac Bill Condon, whose cellular-level understanding of musicals, even in casual conversation, is amazing. And he cracked that film's conceit in the script. Here, Anthony Minghella was the guy who really did the heavy lifting. Michael Tolkin did some early work on the film, adapting the stage production written by Arthur Kopit and...

Two years after his sudden death, what may turn out be Anthony Minghella's final work, Nine – an all-star musical about a director in dilemma – is about to appear. David Thomson hymns his friend 'Ant'
Nine will open wide in America on Christmas Day, and it is certain to be a major contender in the Oscar race. It is the movie version of the musical (book by Arthur Kopit, music by Maury Yeston) that opened on Broadway in 1982, with Raul Julia in the lead role of Guido Contini. In a New York revival, Antonio Banderas played Guido, and when it was given in a concert performance in London Jonathan Pryce played the lead. This is the movie, from the Weinstein Company, and everything has been upscaled. Beyond the astonishing female cast (more anon), it has Daniel Day-Lewis as Guido. There is a hint that in this version, Guido has been upgraded just a little,...

Courtesy of Yahoo, Cinematical and MSN we have been graced with some very sexy new posters for Rob Marshall’s latest on-screen musical endeavor, Nine. I’d have to say that the 3rd one is my favorite out of the bunch.

Every once in a while we miss adding an update to a film and we catch it later on; usually when another update is released. It's pretty shameful, but somehow we missed Rob Marshall's Nine back when the trailer came out. I remember watching it, I guess we just forgot to report on it. Well, here is now the second update, two movie stills, and we thought we'd include the trailer also.

Is it too early to give Rob Marshall's Nine the Oscar for Best Film? Oh, alright I suppose we can wait a few more months. The director of Chicago is back with another musical extravaganza, this one based on a screenplay by Michael Tolkin, which was based on a book by Arthur Kopit, which was based on an Italian play by Mario Fratti, which was inspired by Federico Fellini's 8½. Did you get all that? Good. Here's the summary: Singing + Dancing + Daniel Day-Lewis = Oscar. Ddl plays Guido Contini, a middle-aged director who is trying to complete his next film, but finds himself being pressured by all the women in his life including his wife, mistress and producer. The supporting cast includes Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Penélope Cruz, and Kate Hudson. I have to admit, even though musicals aren't my thing, the trailer for Nine does show off some pretty cool visuals.
