The streamer has ordered a second season of A Man on the Inside, a comedy series starring Danson as Charles, a widower who, in the first season, goes to work for a private investigator (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) to investigate thefts in a retirement community. The series is inspired by the Oscar-nominated documentary The Mole Agent.

The renewal comes a few weeks after A Man on the Inside’s Nov. 21 premiere and on the heels of Danson earning a Golden Globe nomination for his performance. Netflix made the announcement on their official X account on Monday. The second season of the show is now slated to debut in 2025. The series debuted on Netflix on Nov. 21.

Hearing the premise of A Man on the Inside, the new Netflix sitcom starring Ted Danson, it's easy to assume the whole thing was cooked up by sitcom writers. But as it turns out, the series created by The Good Place and Parks and Recreation showrunner Michael Schur actually has roots in the real world. Not only that, but the whole event was made into a documentary back in 2020.

The sitcom follows a recently widowed retiree named Charles (Danson), who is hired by a private investigator named Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) to pose as a new resident of an elder care facility in order to covertly look into a client's concern that a prized piece of family jewelry was stolen. In Netflix’s A Man On The Inside, Ted Danson stars as Charles a retired professor who goes undercover in a retirement community to solve the mystery of a resident’s family heirloom that’s disappeared.

Based on the Maite Alberdi’s documentary The Mole Agent, the series, which launches today, could be seen as a limited project, a one and done investigation, but Danson and showrunner Mike Schur are hoping for more cases.

In the finale episode [Spoilers Alert], Danson’s Charles answers his phone from private investigator Julie, played by Lilah Richcreek Estrada. “I can’t believe I’m saying this but I have another job for you,” she says.

“Say no more,” replies Charles before hanging up the phone. “Hey, sorry I do need you to say more but whatever it is, I’m in,” he adds as he calls her back.

The setup is designed for a second season.

In the trailer for “A Man on the Inside,” Charles (Danson) receives a challenge from his daughter, Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), who expresses concern about his retirement lifestyle in the wake of her mother and his wife’s death, saying, “When mom was alive, they lived this big, full life.”

“I’m giving you a challenge — find something that excites you,” she tells her dad, who answers, “It’s a good challenge; I accept.”

Rather quickly, Charles finds an ad for an investigative assistant, with the requirement that the applicant be aged 75-85. He learns the gig is to find a missing family heirloom that has disappeared within a retirement community, and his job is to pretend to be a new resident, all while sharing intel and a suspect...

The upcoming television series is based on Maite Alberdi's Academy Award-nominated 2020 documentary The Mole Agent. The original documentary follows a private investigator who hires an elderly man to go undercover at a nursing home, as his client thinks the nursing home staff is mistreating his mother.
