When Will Finn's and John Standford's animated musical Western "Home on the Range" was released, it came with an elegiac announcement. Disney, you see, had been struggling throughout the early 2000s. The 1990s renaissance was over, and much of the studio's more recent output was either failing critically or commercially. Films like "Fantasia 2000," "The Emperor's New Groove," and "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" were only modest successes, while films like "Dinosaur" and "Brother Bear" were coming and going without much notice. The studio's clunky sci-fi epic "Treasure Planet" notoriously lost buckets of money, which didn't inspire confidence. It didn't help that DreamWorks was attracting huge animation audiences with films like "Shrek" — a notoriously anti-Disney movie.
As such, to appear competitive, Disney announced that "Home on the Range" was going to be the studio's last-ever traditionally hand-drawn feature film. After that, it was to be 100% CGI. Animation purists panicked, feeling...

An animated adventure containing both talking animals and popular superheroes was always going to be a big money-maker, and so it has proved with DC League of Super-Pets, which went straight to the top spot at the US box office this weekend. It’s easy to see why – written and directed by veterans of the Lego movies, the film delivers fun, fast-paced superhero action with knowing humour that caters to both adults and children alike.
The story centres on Krypto the Super-Dog (voiced by Dwayne Johnson), who came to Earth with baby Superman (John Krasinski) and now fights crime alongside his owner, as well as adopting the glasses-wearing secret identity of Bark Kent.

"DC League of Super-Pets" isn't writer and co-director Jared Stern's first step into the world of DC Comics. Years ago, he was one of the co-writers behind "The Lego Batman Movie." He knows the DC world well, especially after having worked on his latest animated super-pets movie for the last decade or so. As he told us, DC was nothing but supportive in letting him poke fun at their characters, and even suggested Lex Luthor as one of the villains.

When it came time to voice their roles in DC League of Super-Pets, stars such as Kevin Hart had to get creative.
The film was made in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, when rules were so strict that voice talent recorded their parts in isolation without the aid of an audio engineer on site to set them up. Super-Pets stars Dwayne Johnson as Superman’s dog, Krypto, and Hart as Batman’s pooch, Ace — who must team up to save their superhero pals.
Producer Hiram Garcia recalls watching talent record their parts over Zoom, after being sent recording equipment to operate themselves. Hart stood out thanks to a sound booth he made out of a few mattresses and blankets in a hotel room.
“He was so clever in how he set it up, and the sound was great, but he was so hot in there.

“DC League of Super-Pets” from Warner Bros. and DC made a super 2.2 million at the box office in its Thursday pre-shows from 3,200 locations.
The animated film features the voice talent of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart as the lovable and loyal dog companions to Superman, Batman and the like. The film is projected for a 25 million opening this weekend.
For some comparisons, Universal’s animated “The Bad Guys” this spring made 1.2 million in its preview screenings and opened to 24 million, and it has ultimately made 97 million in its run. Johnson’s “Jungle Cruise,” which opened this same weekend last year but also opened in the midst of the pandemic, brought in roughly 2.7 million in its Thursday previews before opening to 35 million. And WB’s “The Lego Movie 2” in 2019 made approximately 2.1 million in its Thursday shows and opened to 34 million.

Rating: 4.5/5.0
This is the story of Superman’s dog Krypto (voice of Dwayne Johnson) and his fear that he’ll lose his best friend Supes (John Krasinski) in anticipation of his engagement to Lois Lane (Olivia Wilde). This emotion gets put on the back burner when Lex Luther (Marc Maron) unleashes Orange Kryptonite to some unsuspecting shelter animals, and they all gain super powers. One of them, Lulu the Guinea Pig (Kate McKinnon), launches Luthor’s evil plan and manages to capture all of the Justice League. It’s up to Krypto, shelter dog Ace (Kevin Hart), Squirrel Chip (Diego Luna), Piggy Pb (Vanessa Bayer) and Turtle Merton (Natasha Lyonne) to save the day.

The Rock, Kevin Hart and Kate McKinnon shine in this endearing spoof from the writers of the Lego Batman Movie
As superhero movies have grown more convoluted, self-serious and ludicrously expensive, it’s fallen to their animated counterparts to keep the multiverses grounded in actual fun. Think the unserious, self-referential madness of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse or The Lego Batman Movie, a zany, film-length jab at Batman’s relentless darkness, isolation and general emo-ness. DC League of Super-Pets, from Lego Batman writers Jared Stern and John Whittington, takes some similar lighthearted digs at Batman, but he’s a side character to the irresistible stars of the show: man’s best friend, plus some pals. Why can’t animals be super, too?
The 105-minute romp, directed by Stern and Sam Levine, shares with the Lego Batman Movie a deadpan sense of humor, frenetic action, reflexive winks for adults and cartoon harmlessness for kids.

Warner Bros’ next DC property to hit the big screen is The Joker, to hit theaters October 4. The studio previously set The Batman, from Matt Reeves, for June 25, 2021, and its Suicide Squad sequel for August 6, 2021. Another DC spinoff, Birds of Prey, is set for February 7, 2020.

Not long after James Gunn found himself no longer directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Warner Bros. snatched him up to write and direct The Suicide Squad.
Well, before he decided to take on The Suicide Squad, apparently Gunn was offered the opportunity to direct a few other DC projects, including a Superman film! THR reports:
When Warners was courting Gunn, the studio gave him his pick of properties, including Superman. Though Gunn never got far enough along to seriously consider tackling a Superman movie, the filmmaker did take a shine to the Man of Steel's superpowered dog Krypto during his comics research — which makes sense for a man who turned a talking raccoon into one of Marvel's most popular big screen characters.
So, even though he’s not directing a Superman movie, there could be a chance for Gunn to direct a Krypto movie at some point!

Late last year, Vacation co-director John Francis Daley revealed to the world that he would be using his directorial debut to reunite with his former Freaks and Geeks co-stars Martin Starr and Samm Levine, adding that he wanted to use the film as an opportunity "to get the three geeks back together in the same project." Sadly, it turns out that the trio actually wound up being cut from Vacation, and there's a pretty lame reason for it: the sequence where the cameos occurred just didn't work. SlashFilm attended a special early showing of Vacation at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month, and it was during a post-screening Q&A session that John Francis Daley and his co-director Jonathan Goldstien that the reasoning for the cut Freaks and Geeks moment was explained. According to the filmmakers, the sequence that Daley, Martin Starr, and Sam Levine were in simply wound up...

The past few weeks, I’ve fallen accidentally in love with a show 14 years too late. The Judd Apatow produced Wonder Years of my generation (or technically… the generation above mine) has finally caught the apple of my eye and has me a bit nostalgic.
It’s hard to figure out how we end up in the cliques we do. Sometimes it’s proximity. Sometimes it’s commonality. In my case? Perhaps a bit of both. My first best friend, to best of my knowledge, became such because he sat across from me in Kindergarten. From then until fourth grade, he and I played together often both during school, and after. As we grew up, we were picked on. He, perhaps for his glasses, for being tall, and for being incredibly smart. Me? Thanks to a mother well-versed in podiatry, I was stricken with wearing proper orthopedic saddle shoes. Long...

Cast your mental browsers back exactly one year and one month to a little story on HeyUGuys which updated release dates for a couple of Disney films, namely Winnie the Pooh and a long gestating project which started out life as Joe Jump.
Sam Levine originally had the Joe Jump project, which was rumoured by revolve around a forgotten 8-bit video game character trying to ‘make his way’ in the modern world, but found itself on the shelf only to be dusted down and given a release date of the 22nd of March 2013 by Disney. Rich Moore was announced as the new director and barely anything of the Joe Jump Levine was working on made it through the change of director. The premise was rumoured to be roughly the same but 3D was mentioned for the first time and now we have an update with cast, crew and a decent synopsis.

Last week, members of the cast and crew from Inglorious Basterds stormed the red carpet at the New Beverly Cinema to celebrate the release of their film on DVD/Blu-ray. Though just a DVD premiere, spotlights shone into the night, flashbulbs flashed, and pens scribbled on notepads. There were a few surprises - the arrival of stunt-woman extraordinaire and Tarantino alum Zoe Bell, for instance. Or the lovely Diane Krueger (Nina Von Hammersmark) arriving with a dapperly dressed Joshua Jackson on her arm.
But for the most part, the focus of the evening was the cast and crew of the critically acclaimed World War II opus. Among them, most of the titular Basterds, including: Sam Levine, Eli Roth, Omar Doom, B.J. Novak, producer Lawrence Bender and, of course, the biggest “basterd” of them all - Quentin Tarantino.

Fuck? Whoop-doo!
The fabulous "fuck" word. A pair of glistening titties. A subplot about spoiled underpants. Gratuitous underage alcohol consumption. Granny bashing. And a horny Asian co-op student that rubs his dick on a seven-foot tall beast of a woman. All in a PG rated movie. What? How did this happen? The year was 1984, and John Hughes got away with murder. His film Sixteen Candles came just before Mola Ram graciously ripped the heart out of an extra on the set of Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom. Moments before Steven Spielberg preformed this one malicious act on the filmgoing youth of America, our PG rated films used to be a lot meaner. Sexier. Funnier. Right on the edge of being R rated.
