George Lindsey in The Andy Griffith Show (1960)

Trivia

George Lindsey

Edit
  • Although Lindsey has pretty much made a career out of playing variations of his most famous character, Goober from the 'Andy Griffith Show (1963)' -- a genial, good-hearted but somewhat slow-witted hick--Lindsey has a Bachelors Degree in Bioscience from the University of North Alabama and was a science teacher before deciding to become an actor.
  • Lindsey and Academy Award winning actor Ernest Borgnine became close friends in the 20 years before Lindsey's death. Borgnine, who admitted to suffering from depression, claimed that Lindsey saved his life with his friendship.
  • According to Jim Nabors, Lindsey was first considered for the role of Gomer Pyle.
  • TV Land's Star Trek (1966) marathon on November 17th, 2006, had comments by the actors. Leonard Nimoy's stunner was that Gene Roddenberry's first choice to play "Spock" was George Lindsey. He turned the part down and the rest is history.
  • Former high school teacher and briefly a stand-up comic.
  • Lindsey and the other cast members of The Andy Griffith Show (1960) were prone to using foul language on the set off-camera, much to the chagrin of Frances Bavier. Bavier and Lindsey once got into such a heated argument over it that she hit him repeatedly with an umbrella and had to be restrained.
  • Devoted a good deal of his time to raising money for Alabama Special Olympics.
  • Two of his closest friends, Andy Griffith and Ernest Borgnine, both died two months after him.
  • Disney used his talents in a handful of projects, both as comedy support in features and giving vocal life to a few of their animated characters.
  • He played quarterback on the Florence State Teachers College (now University of North Alabama) football team.
  • Inducted into the University of North Alabama Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011. When Lindsey attended the school, it was called Florence State Teachers College.
  • On "The Andy Griffith Show" (1963), his character of "Goober" appeared far more times than his more famous cousin "Gomer" (portrayed by Jim Nabors).
  • Has a son George Lindsey Jr., a daughter Camden Jo Lindsey Gardner, and two grandsons.
  • George Lindsey was born in Jasper, Alabama.
  • Inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1983 in the category Youth Benefactor.
  • Appeared in a couple of musicals ("All-American" and "Wonderful Town") before heading to Los Angeles in the early 60s.
  • George Lindsey graduated from the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama. He has been promoting the George Lindsey Film Festival there since 1998.
  • Moved to Hollywood in the early 1960's.
  • Attended Kemper Military School & College in Boonville, Missouri.
  • Attended American Theater Wing in N.Y. in 1956.
  • Partner of Anne Wilson till his death in 2012.
  • Played Goober Pyle at least once on The Andy Griffith Show, The New Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry RFD, Hee Haw, Gomer Pyle USMC and in the TV Movies Goober & the Truckers' Paradise and Return to Mayberry.
