During his lifetime, James Lipton was a Guiding Light actor, a soap opera writer, a Broadway librettist and lyricist, a novelist, and Actors Studio dean — and it was in that lattermost capacity that the American public knew him best. From 1994 to his retirement in 2018, Lipton hosted Inside the Actors Studio on Bravo, asking Hollywood stars about their craft for the edification of his acting students and for his TV audience. “I am not sure that there had been a program prior to Inside the Actors Studio that gave such sustained, deep attention to the labor of screen performance,” Henry Svec, an assistant professor at the University of Waterloo, told NBC News in 2020 following Lipton’s death. “Celebrity culture is so often about the private deeds or misdeeds of the people behind the images, but on Inside the Actors Studio, especially those first few seasons, there was a foregrounding of the...

Sadly, there is a significant number of the Glee cast who have passed away, either from causes later in life or from more tragic circumstances. Glee premiered in May 2009 and ushered in an era of Ryan Murphy TV shows that, collectively, may still not rival the cultural influence of his original hit series about a glee club at the fictional William McKinley High School. Though American Horror Story may now be more well-known, and American Crime Story more critically acclaimed, Glee, particularly the first season, was a phenomenon.
Glee utilized a fantastic ensemble cast of talented actors and singers who drove the tongue-in-cheek comedy of the teen show. However, they're better known for belting out Glee's incredible covers of songs. While the series' quality admittedly dipped quickly, the early seasons of the show are some of the best network TV has had to offer. Glee often brought in famed TV...

Steven Spielberg is known for his blockbuster-scale sci-fi films with a strong emotional core. While he has ventured into serious dramatic territory and has succeeded with films like Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, and The Post, his contribution to genre-filmmaking is unparalleled.
Before the filmmaker made the iconic E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Spielberg ventured into sci-fi territory immediately after the Summer hit Jaws. With Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Spielberg seemed to have his first stint at the UFO film. Like E.T., the film seemed to connect to his parents, which he only to realize after an interviewer pointed it out.

I spent the first 37 years of my life on the East Coast, and even there, I knew who Sam Rubin was.
The beloved Ktla Los Angeles entertainment reporter, who died May 10 at age 64, was a Hollywood fixture for over 30 years, beloved, trusted and respected. Drawing heartfelt tributes ranging from industry veterans like Tom Hanks and Henry Winkler and rising stars like Charmaine Bingwa, I’ve never seen such an outpouring for an entertainment journalist since perhaps Roger Ebert in 2013. Sam greeted everyone with the same infectious enthusiasm and genuine curiosity, whether they were industry stalwarts or nervous newcomers. He was synonymous with Los Angeles but he was also known well outside of Southern California through his reporting for ITV and Australia’s 9 Network.

Amid tributes from Brad Pitt, Carey Mulligan, and the 2024 Santa Barbara International Film Festival itself, “Maestro” director, co-writer, and star Bradley Cooper fit in his own send-ups to a few famous names he’s gotten to work with.
On Thursday evening, the multi-hyphenate was on hand to accept the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, and the current Oscar nominee reflected on his career in conversation with Deadline’s Pete Hammond, including the period in which he was a student asking questions at tapings of “Inside the Actors Studio,” hosted by James Lipton.
Recalling when he got to query his future “Silver Linings Playbook” co-star Robert De Niro about whether an acting choice he made in the 1990 film “Awakenings” was inspired by someone he knew, or was organic, Cooper said, “I thought maybe he would laugh. You think all these weird things, that he was going to laugh at you.

There is a video of a young Bradley Cooper asking a deeply thoughtful question to Robert De Niro about his process for the film “Awakenings.” He was among those studying at The Actors Studio Drama School who were the audience for “Inside The Actors Studio” hosted by the late James Lipton. Bradley would guest on the show in 2011.
Through the 2000s, Cooper had great stints in television with a lead role on the Fox sitcom “Kitchen Confidential” which was cancelled after one season and a regular role in J.J. Abram’s “Alias.” It wasn’t until 2009’s “The Hangover” that he got his big break. Todd Philip’s chaotic buddy comedy was a box office smash, making just shy of $500 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. It even won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy in 2011. This spawned two successful sequels that took the box office total for the trilogy to nearly 1.5 billion dollars.

Heather Langenkamp remembers Johnny Depp being a dedicated and serious actor during their time working together on A Nightmare on Elm Street. Langenkamp initially thought Depp would go back to being a musician after the film, as she knew about his passion for music. Langenkamp is still close with some of her Nightmare co-stars, including Robert Englund and Amanda Wyss, and their friendships have grown over the years through conventions.
“I’m your boyfriend now, Nancy.” A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) taunts Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), with those famous words, before he sucks her boyfriend Glen into a bed and turns him into a bright-red fountain of blood! Barbra Streisand wanted Robert Redford to play Hubbell Gardiner, but he initially turned down the role due to the character's lack of development. Sydney Pollack convinced Redford to take the role by promising to rewrite the character to be more complex and give him more depth. Streisand and Redford's on-screen chemistry in The Way We Were created a memorable and heartbreaking romance, despite the film not receiving nominations for best picture or best director at the Academy Awards.
Yes, Robert Redford originally turned down the part of Hubbell Gardiner in The Way We Were. Director Sydney Pollack’s classic romance celebrates its 50th anniversary on October 16, and its star Barbra Streisand talks about Redford’s importance to the film in her upcoming memoir, My Name Is Barbra. In an excerpt shared by Vanity Fair, the 81-year-old acting and singing sensation writes:

A classic Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) moment where he insults an FBI agent in fluent Italian potentially creates an accidental The Sopranos plot hole. It was established during The Sopranos season 2, episode 4, "Commendatori" that Tony doesn't speak a word of Italian. This is due to the Soprano family being second or third generation Italian immigrants who settled in America, meaning that Tony and many of his fellow mobsters were raised in the USA. "Commendatori" is an episode that plays on Tony's crew's nostalgia for Italy, despite the fact they were born in America. In one memorable scene, Paulie Walnuts (Tony Sirico) orders Italian-American style spaghetti while they dine in a traditional restaurant.
Ironically, Tony Soprano actor James Gandolfini was from a family who owned land in Italy and his parents spoke fluent Italian. Talking to James Lipton on an episode of Inside the Actor's Studio broadcast in 2004, Gandolfini mentioned that...

When a film or a television show is well-written, even characters who never appear on-screen can cast a long shadow. Think of all the titles where the titular character is nothing but a memory. There are also horror films where the frightening monster remains offscreen but terrifies the viewer nonetheless. In television sitcoms, the notion of the unseen character often becomes an amusing gag. Some viewers love this narrative trick for its hilarity or sinister abilities whereas others hate it.
By dangling these characters out of reach, film and television writers toy with our desire to see more -- forcing viewers to use their imaginations and envision what these individuals look like and who they are. Whether you love this trope or hate it, it's one you're bound to encounter now and then. To better understand how this practice has endured, here's a handy list of some of the most...

The master of the modern blockbuster, Steven Spielberg may be known for capturing spectacle — but he's just as skilled at capturing the human experience. The director's true defining quality is his ability to infuse his films with the achingly personal details of his own life, bottled up as universal themes. His latest film, "The Fabelmans," is not just a semi-autobiographical family drama, but also a perfect excuse to revisit the rest of Spielberg's filmography with fresh eyes. The movie's depiction of his childhood reveals a central tension underlying many of Spielberg's most beloved films. Essentially, this is the story that the filmmaker had been telling for decades — just without his usual comforts of allegory and genre twists.
Take "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," a film about a friendly alien befriending some kid. It may not be immediately clear to all viewers that the story is centered on a divorce-torn family, but...

“The Fabelmans” is billed as Steven Spielberg’s most autobiographical film to date, though viewers who’ve followed the director’s career closely have already absorbed plenty of his life story. Whether or not Spielberg was always aware of this is another question. Recall his episode of “Inside the Actor’s Studio,” in which host James Lipton catches Spielberg off-guard with an observation about “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”: A child of divorce, the son of concert pianist Leah Adler and data processing pioneer Arnold Spielberg had made a movie where humans and extraterrestrials can communicate because “they make music on their computers.” “I’d love to say, ‘You know, I intended that, and I realize that was my mother and father,'” Spielberg tells Lipton, as he cracks a smile. “But not until this moment!”

This article contains spoilers for Barry season 3.
The mark of a good TV show is to make every season finale feel like a series finale. And through three years of superb storytelling, no TV show has embodied that virtue better than HBO dark comedy Barry.
The story of hitman-turned-actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) seemed as though it could have ended in the first season when Barry committed the ultimate sin of killing Detective Janice Moss (Paula Newsome). It felt as though it could end for good in season 2 again when Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) uncovered Barry’s crime. Now, at the end of season 3, Barry presents its most conclusive ending yet. Barry is tricked into storming into Janice’s father Jim’s home to kill him only to be stopped by an entire LAPD Swat team and taken into custody.
How could a story about a hitman possibly continue after that?...

Benedict Cumberbatch returns as surgeon-superhero Stephen Strange, now on a mission to protect a teen who can visit parallel universes
We are back in the bizarre rococo world – or actually now worlds – of Doctor Strange, Marvel’s mindbending surgeon-turned-superhero who is played with sonorous conviction by Benedict Cumberbatch. He strides unselfconsciously around in a velveteen outfit accessorised with pointy cloak, jet-black goatee and low hairline of pin-sharp definition – similar to the late James Lipton, presenter of TV’s Inside the Actors Studio. Sam Raimi takes over directing duties from the first film’s Scott Derrickson and brings to it essentially the same lite-scary/action aesthetic.
As ever, there is a pert tai chi discipline to the little circular sparkly shapes and mystical cosmic portholes that Dr Strange creates with swivelling hand-movements, and he flies through the air in the accepted style, not facing down flat with one fist out like Superman,...

Even though Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be shortened to just one pre-taped hour on TNT and TBS, the special In Memoriam segment will still be a highlight. That means even more actors, actresses and members of SAG/AFTRA will hopefully be honored than the 40 people in the tribute last year.

The late James Lipton was asked in 2017 who among the many legendary stars and thespians he’s interviewed over the years was his absolute favorite interview, and it wasn’t some Old Hollywood icon but Bradley Cooper.
Cooper, it turns out, was a student in the Actors Studio and auditioned with Lipton when the “Inside the Actors Studio” host was Dean of the school for 10 years. Lipton had personally accepted Cooper into the program. Both he and Cooper got emotional at seeing how far Cooper had come in his career since his days in the acting school.
“The night that one of my students has achieved so much that he or she comes back and sits down in that chair next to me will be the night I’ve waited for since we started this thing 23 years, and it turned out to be Bradley Cooper,” Lipton told Larry King in 2017. “I auditioned him.
