It's not uncommon for actors to have regrets, and for Hugh Grant, that applies to one film the veteran actor appeared in three decades ago. He's actually so unhappy with his performance in the movie that he says he cannot even allow his wife to see it.
In 1995, Grant starred in Nine Months. In the romcom, Grant plays a man whose longtime partner (Julianne Moore) becomes pregnant, despite her use of birth control, giving him about nine months to prepare for the unexpected addition. Grant has never been happy with his work in the movie, and in a recent interview with Variety, it was made clear he's still no fan. When the movie was brought up, Grant screamed "as if startled," the title alone making him uneasy. He clarified that it's just his own performance that he doesn't like, but be that as it may, he wouldn't be comfortable with letting his wife watch it.

Plenty of voice actors have given iconic video game performances, but one of the most famous voices in the medium isn't necessarily a character. Richard Wells voices the Pegi soundbites, which have been heard all over the world for an incalculable number of games. Despite not having iconic character roles, Wells has gained recognition for his distinctive voice in the gaming industry.
The world of video games, from console to PC, is populated by an extraordinary number of talented voice actors, but one of the most-heard voices in gaming isn't necessarily one of the first that would spring to mind. Industry titans like Nolan North, Troy Baker, and Jennifer Hale tend to pick up some real name recognition thanks to their iconic roles, and in the age of motion capture, it's also not uncommon for major Hollywood figures to put in some video game appearances. Nolan North had input in shaping his cameo scene with Tom Holland in the Uncharted movie, changing the original script to create a more meaningful interaction between their characters. Video game adaptations are paying respect to their origins by including cameos from original voice actors, such as North in Uncharted, as a way to acknowledge their contributions to the games. The decision to have Holland's character accept a drink from North's character instead of taking it himself was crucial in creating the right tone and passing the torch between the two generations of Nathan Drake performers.
Uncharted video game voice actor Nolan North reveals how he changed the dialogue for his cameo scene with Tom Holland in the series' big screen adaptation. The Super Mario Bros Movie's final line is delivered by Papa Mario, who is voiced by the original Mario voice actor. His words are even more fitting considering this. Charles Martinet, the long-time voice actor for Mario and Luigi, delivers the film's final line as Mario's dad, making it a fitting end to his 32-year tenure with the characters. Martinet delivering the final line of The Super Mario Bros Movie was a touching way to start his retirement from Nintendo.
The Super Mario Bros Movie's touching end was the perfect way to finish off the film, but the final line has a heartwarming double meaning. The movie concludes with Mario and Luigi finally getting the recognition and appreciation they deserve, saving not only the Mushroom Kingdom but also all of Brooklyn. Giuseppe in The Super Mario Bros Movie serves as a nod to Mario's iconic voice actor, Charles Martinet and his grand sendoff from the role. Giuseppe's design is based on Mario's original character, Jumpman, from the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong. The inclusion of Giuseppe and other characters pays homage to important moments in Mario's history, adding depth for fans of the Nintendo games.
The Super Mario Bros Movie briefly introduced the character Giuseppe, who was a secret Easter egg to multiple aspects of the Super Mario video games. The classic character of Mario has existed in various forms since 1981, but the Illumination movie portrayed him in a whole new light. Chris Pratt's casting as the voice of Garfield reflects a larger problem in the entertainment industry of high-profile actors replacing voice acting legends. The decision to cast Pratt ignores the talented aspiring voice actors who are struggling to make it in the industry. Sony Pictures is prioritizing trendiness over giving opportunities to up-and-coming voice actors, depriving them of potential jobs.
After Charles Martinet stepped down as the voice of Mario, the responsibility to continue the legacy of Nintendo's famous Italian plumber fell on the shoulders of Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt, who found success as the new voice of Mario in The Super Mario Bros. This month sees the launch of Super Mario Bros. Wonder: the first new Super Mario game on the Nintendo Switch since 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey and the first side-scrolling Super Mario game since 2012’s New Super Mario Bros. U on the Wii U.
While there’s plenty of buzz about Wonder being the first Super Mario game to feature a different voice actor for Mario (instead of franchise veteran Charles Martinet) in over 25 years, the game also marks the return of prolific Nintendo developer Takashi Tezuka, who serves as Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s producer.
A presence with the Super Mario series since the beginning, Tezuka is the unsung figure behind making the video game hero a global icon and figurehead of the entire video game industry.

The end of an era has given way to the start of a new one. Nintendo has announced that Mario (and his brother Luigi) have a new voice in the video games, and that voice is going to be provided by actor Kevin Afghani. He will make his debut as the voice of the iconic duo in the upcoming game "Super Mario Bros. Wonder," which is set to hit shelves next week.
This news comes several weeks after it was revealed that Charles Martinet, who has been the voice of Mario since 1991, is retiring from the role. That meant that someone had to step in and fill those legendary shoes. That someone is Afghani, who is a voice actor with a relatively small resume up to this point in his career. This is far and away his most high-profile gig to date. No pressure. Afghani, taking to Twitter, had this...

The success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie proves that Chris Pratt can lead a hugely successful animated film. The trend of casting big-name actors in major animation adaptations has caused controversy, but it has proven successful at the box office. The $1.3 billion box office of The Super Mario Bros. Movie justifies Chris Pratt's casting in the upcoming Garfield movie and shows his growing experience and success in animation.
In 2021, Chris Pratt was announced as the star of two major animated films to very mixed reactions, but the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie is good news for his upcoming project. After rising to fame in the beloved roles of Andy in Parks and Recreation and Starlord in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Pratt experienced somewhat of a downfall, at least in terms of his public image. His affiliation with Hillsong Church and certain Instagram comments led to great scrutiny online.

Videogame movies have been a mixed bag, with the cinematic medium often failing to capture the joy of gaming. One recent movie that bucked the trend of disappointing videogame adaptations is The Super Mario Bros Movie. Illumination's charming tale surprised fans of the games, and as the movie hits the Peacock streaming service, viewers are discussing ways that it improved on the gaming series.
Although it doesn't quite convey the same sense of fun as playing the Super Mario video games, there are still many ways that the film improves upon the source material. The Super Mario Bros Movie seizes the opportunity to improve upon some of the gaming franchise's flaws, offering a rich and compelling experience for fans new and old.

Spotting Easter eggs in the Super Mario Bros. Movie is even more fun now that it's streaming, with references to other Nintendo IPs hidden throughout. The movie is full of action-packed sequences and obscure references, making it even more entertaining to rewatch on Peacock. From Blue Falcon posters to Punch-Out Pizzeria and Mario sliding down the flagpole at Castle Burger, the movie is bursting with nostalgic Nintendo Easter eggs.
Part of what made The Super Mario Bros. Movie so fun was spotting all the Easter eggs in theaters, but now that it's released on streaming, fans can hunt for even more. The first half of the movie finds Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) struggling to get their plumbing business off the ground, with an intricate version of Brooklyn bursting with references to other Nintendo IPs with every business and building. As The Super Mario Bros. Movie powers up its much-anticipated streaming release, the video game adaptation's Peacock debut breaks a record for Universal some fans may find frustrating.
Per The Direct, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which premiered via Peacock on Aug. 3, comes precisely 120 days after it made its theatrical debut on Apr. 5. This is the most extended wait for a Universal flick to come out on streaming following its cinematic debut, beating Jordan Peele's 2022 sci-fi horror film, Nope (119 days), to break the record.

Chris Pratt and Charlie Day voice moustachioed plumbers Mario and Luigi in this animated adaptation of one of the most popular video games of all time. Produced by Illumination (home of the Minions) and co-directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the film instantly eclipses all memories of the disastrous 1993 live-action movie and delivers fast-paced forgettable fun, much like the video game itself.
The Super Mario Bros Movie opens in what looks like 1980s Brooklyn, where plumbers Mario and Luigi are excited to begin their new plumbing business, after recording a commercial in which they adopt exaggerated Italian accents (thereby neatly getting around the problem of whether they’re going to speak like that for the entire movie). Mama Mia! In an alternate timeline, Chris Pratt never voiced Mario in Illumination and Nintendo‘s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. How is this possible? The role could have gone to About My Father actor and comedian Sebastian Maniscalco! Speaking with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on Live With Kelly and Mark, Maniscalco told the duo he auditioned for the Mario role before joining the cast as Spike, Mario and Luigi’s former boss in the film. While Maniscalco didn’t get the chance to play Mario, he says his version of the character is closer to the voice used by Charles Martinet in the video game franchise.
“Everybody was like, ‘How come they didn’t cast an Italian American for the role?’ So I read for Mario, and I went in there and I did the whole, ‘It’s a’me, Mario!’ And then they said, ‘We’re gonna give you Spike.

Chris Pratt brings something new to the voice of Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but it could have been another actor from the film doing a more traditional take on the role. Most often voiced in the video games by veteran voice actor Charles Martinet, the Mario character was portrayed by Pratt in the new film. While the decision sparked some controversy ahead of the movie's release, filmgoers were ultimately left satisfied by the portrayal for the most part, given the immense box office success and high audience scores for the film.
Also in the movie, Italian American comedian and actor Sebastian Maniscalco provides the voice of Foreman Spike, Mario's old boss. During a recent interview on Live With Kelly & Mark, Maniscalco spoke about his casting in the film and revealed how he originally auditioned for Mario. Nintendo has long been titan in the video game world, so it’s no surprise that The Super Mario Bros. Movie has already surpassed $1 billion at the global box office. With an all-star cast, Nintendo wasn’t taking any chances with their most recent theatrical release after the failure of their Super Mario Bros movie in the early-90s.
Illumination held as close to the source material as possible; at times, scenes look like they could have come straight out of a modern Mario game, but by its simplistic nature, Mario games never had much of a backstory. To solve that problem, they introduced a family for Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day), and included a focus on family for Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) that had always fallen into the background in the games. Here's a breakdown of the film's exploration of Mario and Donkey Kong's family dynamics.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is jumping the $500 million mark at the North American box office in yet another milestone for the blockbuster.
From Illumination and Universal, the movie adaptation of the Nintendo video game is only the fourth movie to cross the half-billion mark domestically in the pandemic era behind Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814.1 million), Top Gun: Maverick ($718.7 million) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($683.9 million).
And it is the first Illumination and Universal animation title ever to jump $500 million domestically, not adjusted for inflation. It is also the second highest-grossing animated film of all time domestically. And it is the third-biggest Universal release of all time behind Jurassic World and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Super Mario Bros., which finished Thursday with $499.5 million in domestic ticket sales, has smashed numerous records since its debut in mid-March, including becoming the first title of 2023 to clear $1 billion at the global box office.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has received a lot of criticism for casting Chris Pratt as the titular plumber, but Pixar has proved time and again that animated movies do not need A-list actors in order to be successful. The Guardians of the Galaxy actor is playing the Italian video game icon, and the casting has come under scrutiny for prioritizing star power over suitability for the role. Pratt's voice will be especially jarring in The Super Mario Bros. Movie given that original Mario voice actor Charles Martinet has several cameo roles. However, Pratt's lack of Italian accent is not the movie's biggest mistake.
Pratt has likely been paid a hefty salary to use his normal, unexceptional accent when a professional voice actor could have done a much better job for a much lower salary, and even Martinet could have played Mario. While The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the most notable example,...

Before "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" hit theaters this April, the new film caused controversy online because of the voice of its main character. Chris Pratt voices Mario, the iconic plumber-turned-hero, but while fans are used to the character having an Italian accent in the video game, Pratt didn't use one for the movie. Many fans wondered why Charles Martinet, the professional voice actor who gives life to Mario and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day in the film) in the video games, wasn't tapped to voice them on screen as well.
Here's what Pratt's said about his accent in the film, and the one way the movie pokes fun at the accent drama with Martinet's help.

Nintendo brought Mario to the big screen back in 1993 with Super Mario Bros. This film starred Bob Hoskins as the titular Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi. The film did not do too well. It became the go-to reference for a bad adaptation of video games to live-action films.

Across the history of cinematic screw-ups, few have been as notorious or lasting as 1993’s Super Mario Bros. The film – a loose adaptation of Nintendo’s hit platforming franchise, starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo – came to epitomise the “curse” of sub-par game-to-screen adaptations for decades. Hollywood simply didn’t understand video games. Hoskins was oblivious to the film’s origins until he’d already signed on, and who could blame him? Even if he had played the games, the murky, off-putting crime fantasy was unrecognisable from the eye-poppingly colourful frivolity that inspired it. Thirty years later and the Mario games have been adapted again. But this time The Super Mario Brothers Movie suffers from the opposite problem: it understands video games far, far too well.

"Mamma mia" is Mario's most iconic catchphrase, making it strange that he only says it twice in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While Mario does speak full lines of dialogue in Illumination's first Mario movie, viewers were expecting a little more out of the Nintendo mascot's first time on the big screen in several decades. While some may be disappointed with Mario's lack of "Mamma mia" moments, The Super Mario Bros. Movie actually has a good explanation as to why the catchphrase is used so little.

With “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” breaking box-office records in its opening weekend, star Chris Pratt — who voices Mario — reveals the vocal characterization he uses in the movie wasn’t his first choice.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he recalls the film’s directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, kiboshing his first attempt at embodying the video-game plumber because it sounded too much like a certain TV mob boss.
“For a minute, I walked in and they were like, ‘That’s a little New Jersey. You’re doing a Tony Soprano thing,’” Pratt said.

Last year on September 23, four words took over the entire internet: "Chris Pratt is Mario." In a Nintendo Direct presentation, franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto himself announced the company's second attempt in bringing his beloved red plumber mascot to the big screen since the financial failure of 1993's live-action "Super Mario Bros." (which has taken on a cult following in recent years). Collaborating with Universal's animation studio, Illumination Entertainment, Miyamoto took on a creative producer role for the project — this time, he was determined to get everything about his video game world right, and that required the freedom animation provides.

You’ll also find references to a certain 1993 movie as well as the animated series and comics sprinkled throughout the film. And there are plenty of even more obscure references, too.

Almost too much has been made about how Chris Pratt sounds as famous video game plumber Mario in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” Since the “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor was cast in the voice role, he’s faced strong criticism and the bad buzz was exacerbated after the film’s first trailer last year. But those who anticipated Pratt would voice Mario with an exaggerated Italian accent similar to how the famous character sounds in the video games might be surprised by what’s actually in the movie. Outside of a brief and goofy commercial for Super Mario Bros. Plumbing where Pratt and Charlie Day as Luigi sound like the source material, Pratt’s Mario accent is more subtle and straightforward.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, however, Pratt and Day did confirm that an it’s-a-me version almost could have existed.
“We tried different things, different voices,” Day said. “Every...

Hollywood star Chris Pratt’s Mario voice has been a topic of discussion ever since the first trailer for ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ debuted last October.
Some fans claimed that it wasn’t Italian enough, while others felt it was too aggressively Brooklyn, reports Variety.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pratt revealed that one of his first attempts at the Mario voice got rejected by the film’s directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, because it far too resembled Tony Soprano, the anti-hero mob boss played by James Gandolfini in HBO’s ‘The Sopranos’.
“For a minute, I walked in and they were like, ‘That’s a little New Jersey. You’re doing a Tony Soprano thing,’ Pratt said, quoted by Variety. “(The voice) was a really exciting and daunting challenge. Talking to these guys, they say, ‘You wanna do the Mario movie?’ I think both (Charlie Day and I) said yes.

Editor's note: The following contains spoilers for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It was unrealistic to expect Mario and Luigi's voices to be identical in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Nintendo’s video games. Still, we would be lying if we said Charles Martinet was not the definitive voice of the mustachioed heroes. Sure, a movie needs more than a few “It’s a Me,” “Let’s a Go,” and “Mamma Mia” thrown in between jumps and punches. However, while we can understand the appeal of casting big Hollywood stars like Chris Pratt and Charlie Day in the lead roles for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the film adaptation had the moral obligation to homage to the man who gave Mario and Luigi a voice. Thankfully, The Super Mario Bros. Movie finds not one, but two roles for Martinet to play. And both of them have a deep meaning to the franchise.
