The latest Robert De Niro movie to grace the big screen, The Alto Knights, understands one key rule: the more De Niro you can have in your movie, the better. Hence, it stars De Niro in two roles, as duelling mob bosses – a genre and milieu that he knows better than most, having starred in several of the greatest gangster movies ever made. But that’s just scratching the surface of De Niro – compelling whether he’s playing career criminals, comedians, cackling psychos, or champion boxers. Through his collaborations with Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Mann and beyond, he’s delivered some of the most mesmerising performances ever captured on celluloid – creating indelible characters along the way.

Warner Bros. might be turning cold to the idea of a prequel/sequel to Michael Mann's seminal heist classic Heat, as, according to a new report, Heat 2 is on the back burner. A script for the long-gestating project was submitted earlier this year, but no green light has been given as yet. The main reasons behind the studio's hesitation to move forward are likely the production budget that a cinematic follow-up of this scale would require and the ongoing changes and challenges that are happening behind the scenes, making the future uncertain.
World of Reel reports that a source close to the studio suggested that "the budget demanded by Michael [Mann] is way too high." This shouldn't be surprising to learn, as Mann revealed in August last year that he envisioned Heat 2 as being "large or at least as large as the original," filming in multiple locations around the world.

Many directors are known for shooting a lot of takes. David Fincher's penchant for multiple takes led to a lot of demanding days on the "Mindhunter" set, while Stanley Kubrick's exhausting methods are infamous, such as when he made Tom Cruise walk through a door 95 times on the set of "Eyes Wide Shut." The question of whether the effort involved in this approach actually yields better results than something like Clint Eastwood's commitment to using the very first take remains unanswered at this point. But sometimes, shooting take after take results in something undeniably great. Case in point: one of Al Pacino's most memorable lines in Michael Mann's "Heat."
The 1995 crime thriller remains a touchstone of the genre, and not just because it finally saw Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro share a scene and featured one of the best gun fights ever put to screen.

Few films genres are as iconic as Noir. Recognizable for dramatic lighting, jazzy soundtracks, and a gritty setting, Noir has been transporting viewers to the world of underground crime since its creation in the 1940s. More important than its aesthetic, Noir's morally ambiguous leads embark on investigations of the human spirit and its ability to be corrupted.
Though the era of 1940s Noir has ended, the genre has lived on in modern cinema--influencing many films with its classic themes and visuals. For example, David Lynch's psychological thriller Mulholland Drive, relies on a dreamy jazz soundtrack and classic Noir visuals, while dark comedies like A Simple Favor, revolve around a morally ambiguous lead on a quest to undercover the truth. Ultimately, by incorporating elements of Noir into their projects, these successful films better draw audiences into the story.

Michael Mann is the unquestioned master of the crime genre. Beginning with his stunning feature directorial debut, the 1981 crime thriller Thief, Mann’s essential approach to the genre has been to combine his deep fascination with criminal psychology with technical precision. In Mann’s films, action and character are interconnected, and style is substance. Mann was at the peak of his powers with the making of the acclaimed 1995 epic crime film Heat, which is regarded as being one of the greatest and most influential films of the past 30 years, regardless of genre. While Heat is entirely compelling with its methodical presentation of criminal strategies and tools, Heat is fundamentally about people and relationships.

One of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro's most iconic movies is getting a new streaming home soon. Pacino rose to fame portraying the youngest son of the Corleone family in The Godfather trilogy. His follow-up performances in Scarface and Dog Day Afternoon further cemented his status as a formidable actor. De Niro’s career formed along similar genre lines with gritty roles in mob films like Goodfellas, while winning Best Actor for his gripping portrayal of Jake Lamotta in Raging Bull. The two have thus defined the crime genre with unparalleled talent and their brooding on-screen presence in action-packed dramas.
Though the two legends have often worked separately, their collaborations have nonetheless brought about some significant films. Their time in The Godfather Part II, where De Niro plays a young Vito and father to Pacino's Michael, solidified both actors' reputations as masters of the crime and gangster genres,...

The news has been running for about a year that Michael Mann has been working on Heat 2 with rumors that his Ferrari star, Adam Driver, and Austin Butler are attached as a young McCauley and Shiherlis. Mann has stated that audiences are ready for a new story in the Heat universe. “It’s sustained in culture. It’s known,” Mann said. “I could delude myself into thinking that the whole world is familiar with it, but when you check out its prominence in home video for over 20 years, this thing really has legs. People are still watching it, people are still talking about it. It’s a brand. It’s kind of a Heat universe, in a way. And that certainly justifies a very large ambitious movie.“

A decidedly coy Michael Mann said little about Heat 2, his follow-up film to the 1995 crime drama Heat that starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, while attending the Red Sea Film Festival on Sunday.
“The next (movie) I’d like to do is Heat 2,” Mann reiterated in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, during an informal conversation in Old City Al Balad after an earlier screening of Heat at the festival. He was careful to reveal little about the screenplay for the project, which Mann has reportedly set up at Warner Bros. “It has to be finished really soon.”
The Heat sequel has been on the back burner for some time now, but Mann breathed new life into the project with his 2022 crime novel Heat 2, co-written by the 81-year-old director and author Meg Gardiner, which acts as both a prequel and a sequel to Mann’s 1995 crime film classic. The book became a No.

Michael Mann has confirmed he is getting close to completing his screenplay for Heat 2 and that it will be his next movie, in a conversation at Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival on Monday.
“We have to have it finished very soon,” he said, suggesting jokingly he would be doing that on “The plane ride back to Los Angeles.”
The director said after Heat 2, he wanted to make his previously mooted movie about the 1968 Battle of Hué, one of the bloodiest chapters of the Vietnam War in which the forces of South Vietnam and U.S troops recaptured the city of Hué over one month of brutal urban fighting.
Questioned on the continuing cult status of the original Heat movie as the 30th anniversary of its release approaches, Mann said he was not surprised by its success and longevity.

Keanu Reeves has landed iconic roles that range from bullet-dodging freedom fighter to a dude-level time traveler. There was one movie, however, where he would've made for an interesting addition to an already stellar collection of cast members, had he only taken up the offer. According to The New Zealand Herald, Reeves very nearly ended up starring in "Heat," the revered 1995 Michael Mann crime movie (even though Mann didn't see it as one) that had Robert De Niro and Al Pacino face off against one another in a perfect cat and mouse chase. For better or for worse, though, Reeves instead chose to tread the boards in a Canadian theatre production of "Hamlet."
Had he taken the job, Reeves would've played the number two to Neil McCauley (De Niro), Chris Shiherlis, which instead went to Val Kilmer and became one of the actor's career highlights. Luckily, though, Reeves still managed...

The actors who starred in The Godfather trilogy have had very successful careers outside of Francis Ford Coppola's masterful crime saga, and their best movies prove that. The cast of The Godfather was filled with both established actors and new stars that the trilogy created. The actors who made The Godfather work proved time and again that it wasn't just the franchise's incredible scripts and legendary directing that made it one of the best movies of all time, but also their performances.
The sheer range and quality of movies that the stars of The Godfather made after their time with the Corleone family is quite impressive. Val Kilmer has been a part of many iconic works over the years. Being immortalized in the world of Hollywood, he has played crucial roles in films like Top Gun, Tombstone, Batman Forever, and Willow. However, none have been as culturally significant for him as 1995’s Heat. The film had an excellent cast, with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino being right by his side.

Imagine if Al Pacinos Lieutenant Vincent Hanna had taken a hit of coke on-screen in Heat. Such a display of drug use certainly would have, at the very least, altered Pacinos character in the eyes of moviegoers. And who knows what the ramifications would have been if detective Hanna went up against the conniving career criminal Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) while clearly coked up in director Michael Manns classic crime drama nearly 30 years ago. One original star from Heat has addressed his possible return in Heat 2, alongside who should portray a younger version of his character in flashbacks the film will feature. The upcoming Heat 2 is an adaptation of Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner's 2022 novel of the same name, which serves as a sequel to Mann's 1995 movie Heat. The story takes place both before and after the events of the original film, which the co-writer and original director intends to adapt on the big screen. This includes the return of some characters from the original movie.
Speaking with Moviefone, Danny Trejo, who portrayed the character Gilbert Trejo in the original Heat, revealed he's talked with Mann in hopes of reprising his role for Heat 2. The actor also believed that his son, also an actor and also named Gilbert Trejo, would be the perfect person to portray a younger version of his character in the movie.

Beneath the Los Angeles skyline, a shimmering grid of blue city lights connects a vast number of people throughout the course of Michael Mann's 1995 masterpiece, Heat. The film is a large-scale crime epic that finds a robbery-homicide detective, Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), caught in a fateful tail spin with career criminal Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and his proficient crew, including Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer). McCauley is a thorough, meticulous criminal, but he opens himself up to Eady (Amy Brenneman), a graphic designer, as the two develop a romantic connection. Hanna's relentless pursuit and McCauley's growing love for Eady threaten his ability to maintain his strict discipline.

HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon is now in between seasons for at least two years, having wrapped up the second season on August 4. While we look back at the season's best and worst moments, there are also plenty of interviews from the cast and crew to read and watch. One of the show's stars, Ewan Mitchell, might not have had the most screentime as Aemond Targaryen, but he won over the fandom's heart (very much including mine) with his strong performance and endearing interview clips.

Crime thrillers focusing on cops and detectives have always been present in cinema. Film noir movies in the 1940s set the stage for the type of gritty, hardboiled characters who would go on to populate crime thrillers. The genre evolved as different types of movies started to pop up during the 1970s as they started to take a more realistic, gritty approach. Crime thrillers like The French Connection almost feel like B-Movies in the way they're shot, but it was an active choice to make them like that.
People have an inherent fascination with crime movies as they explore people in the line of fire, making risky moves that most people would never fathom to do. Being a police officer means that action could come at any point, and knowing that, as a viewer, makes for a thrilling experience at the cinema.

Gun expert Taran Butler praises director Michael Mann's knowledge of firearms and his portrayal of a shootout during Heat's bank heist sequence. Butler shares particular praise for Val Kilmer's fast and efficient reload scene, which is shown in its entirety with no cuts. Heat's shootout sequence remains one of the best ever filmed due to the highly-trained actors involved and unique sound design choices.
A gun expert breaks down Heat's bank heist scene and why Val Kilmer is so impressive in it. Released in 1995, Michael Mann's Heat chronicles a showdown between professional bank robber Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and obsessed cop Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino). The film remains one of the most beloved entries in Mann's filmography, due in large part to a stunning bank heist sequence in which McCauley's crew, which includes Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis, engage in a shootout with Hanna's task force on the streets of downtown L.

Heat 2 will act as both a sequel and prequel to the original film, exploring the events before and after McCauley's bank heist. The return of Heat is what Michael Mann needs to bring back his spark as a director, with Adam Driver confirmed to play a younger McCauley. Mann's upcoming Heat 2 has the potential to rival the impact of his acclaimed thriller "Heat" and recapture the thrill of "Collateral."

Aemond Targaryen is one of House of the Dragons most complex, compelling, and conniving characters. Actor Ewan Mitchell has spoken about taking inspiration from Heat, particularly Robert De Niros character, as well as employing some of the techniques that James Gandolfini used on the set of The Sopranos.
In an episode of Vanity Fairs podcast Still Watching, Mitchell opened up about Aemonds motivations, twisted as they may be, and how he manages to portray a character so unlike himself. The actor began by explaining that Aemond has a strong attention-seeking drive, saying, "Aemond never really felt unconditional love growing up. He was the spare son, although he felt like he should have been treated as the first. He was bullied relentlessly by his nephews, his brother acting as ringleader. Director Michael Mann's magnum opus is 1995's "Heat." The movie's sprawling shoot-out scene (the best of its kind) is what many most remember about "Heat," but the picture doesn't only rely on action. "Heat" is just as compelling when Detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and robber Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) are sitting down for a cup of coffee. Mann's next film, 1999's "The Insider," relies only on dialogue scenes to keep up the tension and easily succeeds.
"The Insider" is nearly as long as "Heat" and is just as compelling despite there being no action scenes to break up the talky bits. Mann is one of our best action filmmakers, but his talents extend past action movies. (Read our full ranking of Mann's films here.)

Dr. Strangelove, a film he saw during university, made Mann fall in love with cinema and pursue meaningful projects. Noir films like Pale Flower, The Asphalt Jungle, Sweet Smell of Success, and Out of the Past heavily influenced Mann's style.

For a certain type of film nerd (and lord knows I’m one), Michael Mann is a god. The man (Mann!) has directed some of the most potent, ultra-macho dramas and crime thrillers of the last forty-plus years, including a whole laundry list of classics, including Thief, Manhunter, The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, The Insider, Collateral, and many more. Plus, he’s the guy behind one of the greatest TV shows of all time, Miami Vice, and its underrated 2006 big-screen remake (to which we recently paid tribute). His influence can be felt in everything from Sam Levinson’s Euphoria to, shockingly enough, the films of Wes Anderson.
And now, Mann has joined the Mecca of film worship, Letterboxd, opening an account that includes a list of fourteen of his favourite movies. The selection is quite eclectic, including works from Sergei Eisenstein to Martin Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro, Denis Villeneuve,...

There's an entire generation of actors, and movie lovers in general, who think Al Pacino is the best actor ever based almost solely on the basis of his 1970s work. Obviously, he was overwhelmingly dynamic. The live-wire energy of characters like Frank Serpico, Sonny Wortzik and Arthur Kirkland spit and popped off the screen with a sizzling intensity that could only be matched by his Method contemporaries (namely Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman). But he might've been more impressive when playing strangely ingratiating outsiders, as he did to unforgettable effect under Jerry Schatzberg's direction in "Panic in Needle Park" and "Scarecrow."
And then there was Michael Corelone in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather" and "The Godfather Part II." As the youngest and, much to the consternation of his older brothers, favorite son of mafia capo Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando), Pacino, over two movies running a combined six-plus hours,...

Austin Butler is rumored to play Chris Shiherlis in Heat 2, replacing Val Kilmer. Adam Driver may also join the cast, playing a young version of Robert De Niro's character. Michael Mann, the director, has expressed positive feelings about both actors, hinting at possible casting.
Ever since Heat director Michael Mann (in collaboration with Meg Gardiner) released his prequel/sequel novel in 2022, a cinematic adaptation has seemed somewhat inevitable. But there was a problem, and that's the fact that Val Kilmer's Chris Shiherlis is Heat 2's protagonist. Sadly, Kilmer is not in any condition to reprise his role at this point given health complications, so the question was begged whether such a memorable role, and the performance fueling it, could be recast. Well, when Mann himself announced Heat 2 as his next movie, one name in particular was floated fairly consistently that answered the question in the affirmative: Austin Butler.
