amfAR raised over $3 million at its inaugural amfAR Las Vegas gala last night. In addition, the foundation will receive a portion of nearly $11 million generated with event partner Rm Sotheby’s in a live auction of rare luxury automobiles.

More stars are heading to Italy to join amfAR at the organization’s annual fundraiser during the 81st Venice International Film Festival.

Kate Beckinsale is set to host the black-tie gala, which will feature performances by longtime amfAR supporter Kelly Rowland and actress-turned-singer Rumer Willis. As previously announced, veteran actor Richard Gere will be presented with amfAR’s Award of Inspiration while film producer and philanthropist Mohammed Al Turki, former CEO of the Red Sea Film Festival, will be honored with a philanthropic leadership award.

Each year, the amfAR Gala is one of the biggest celebrity-studded and exclusive black-tie events during the Cannes Film Festival. Always held on the last Thursday of the festival, the evening brings together notable names and those with thick wallets to raise money for AIDS research and HIV prevention, treatment, education and advocacy. This year, the 30th edition of the gala — held at Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc — started off with cocktails and the red carpet, then a dinner and live auction.

The program for amfAR’s milestone 30th Cannes gala is growing.

Nick Jonas has booked a trip and will perform at the starry event which will also feature a “special musical moment” by Cher. Demi Moore is hosting the gala on May 23, a showing that will punctuate a busy festival for the veteran actress who has a film in competition, The Substance, and duties with Chopard as the jeweler’s godmother for a gala ceremony.

It was the 75th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival this year and certainly the fest itself thought that alone was cause for celebration, and they did exactly that, but they were not the only ones with reason to party. As the pandemic cancelled the 2020 fest, and downsized the 2021 fest, there was definitely a feeling that it was time to party again in Cannes, just like it was 2019 all over again. And that certainly was the vibe when amFAR returned to form Thursday night, making money to benefit the continuing fight against AIDS, even if it seems that the cause has been overshadowed by Covid in recent times. amFAR chairmen T. Ryan Greenawalt and Kevin McClatchy made the point that while many countries were doing better, others weren’t, and they offered the troubling statistic that still there are 2,000 AIDS-related deaths every day, and 4,000 new infections daily.

The gala will take place outdoors at Villa Eilenroc and consist of an exclusive dinner, auction, multiple performances and a fashion show curated by French fashion editor Carine Roitfeld. As Us senators race to announce their support for gay marriage, and public support for gay couples to wed increases, perhaps it's not surprising that Out magazine couldn't find a closeted public figure to unmask for the first time in its latest list of the most powerful gay men and women in the Us.

In the past, the magazine has included figures it knew to be gay but who had not made public declarations: Anderson Cooper and Jodie Foster were cover stars in 2007, but it was only last year that both publicly announced they were gay.
