Apple Original Films and Warner Bros. Pictures have finally launched the full-length official trailer for Joseph Kosinski's F1, the upcoming summer action blockbuster starring 2x Academy Award-winner Brad Pitt (Fight Club; Bullet Train; Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood) as Sonny Hayes, "the greatest that never was."
Speaking with reporters at the trailer launch, the Top Gun: Maverick director teased what we can expect from his next high octane thriller, "Watching Brad drive around at speeds over 180 miles an hour was really impressive to see because it's not something you can just learn overnight. The dedication and the focus that Brad put into this process has been amazing to witness. This film has got it all: Brad Pitt, speed, thrills, an epic underdog story, drama, humor, and a little bit of romance."

Apple Original Films has released the high-octane trailer for Joseph Kosinski’s “F1,” featuring Brad Pitt as a racer-for-hire on the Formula One circuit.
The film will hit theaters and Imax nationwide on June 27
Dubbed “the greatest that never was,” Sonny Hayes (Pitt) was Formula One’s most promising phenom of the 1990s until he spectacularly crashed and burned. 30 years later, he is a nomadic racer-for-hire when he’s approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling F1 team that is on the verge of collapse.
Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to Formula One for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He will drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team’s hotshot rookie intent on setting his own accelerated pace.
But as the engines roar, Sonny’s past catches up with him and he finds...

Shania Twain might not be impressed by F1 star Brad Pitt, but the same can’t be said for Formula One legend Lewis Hamilton.
“Watching Brad drive around speeds over 180 miles an hour was really impressive to see because it’s not something you can just learn overnight,” Hamilton said during a pretaped video that played for members of the press during a special presentation of the new F1 trailer (watch below) this week. “The dedication and the focus that Brad put into this process has been amazing to witness.”
Hamilton, a seven-time Formula One World Drivers’ champion, was intimately involved in the production of the upcoming movie. He’s one of several producers on the project, including Jerry Bruckheimer, and worked with filmmaker Joseph Kosinski to ensure F1 was as realistic as possible.
“He lives that sport every day. He’s one of the greatest of all time,” Kosinski said during the press conference.

People like to say, “It’s never too early” to do something, but that’s not always true. For example, it’s too early to predict next year’s Academy Awards before this year’s Academy Awards. But the 2025 Oscars are over, so now it’s time to start making predictions about what films will contend for the Oscars next year.
It’s already looking like the 98th Academy Awards will have a stronger field than the 97th. Blue chip filmmakers are returning from long breaks with exciting casts in tow. Each Safdie brother has their own A24 sports drama. There’s a new Avatar movie. It’s going to be an exciting, unpredictable year.

Warner Bros., Apple Original Films, and Brad Pitt got the adrenaline rushing early on Super Bowl Sunday with a new teaser for Pitt’s upcoming racing blockbuster, F1.
Apple produced the film, and Warner Bros. will distribute it in theaters this summer. F1 is Joseph Kosinski’s follow-up to Top Gun: Maverick. As with that film, F1 focuses on an aging character who was once at the top of his field (Pitt) who returns to the heat of competition to help mentor a younger cohort (Damson Idris). Kosinski shot the film during actual Grand Prix events, and several real-life drivers — including Lewis Hamilton — will make appearances.
In addition to Pitt and Idris, the film also stars Oscar winner Javier Bardem, Emmy winner Tobias Menzies, Oscar nominee Kerry Condon, Emmy nominee Sarah Niles, and Shea Whigham. Among the notable creatives who worked with Kosinski on the project are Top Gun: Maverick...

On November 4, 2005, George Clooney brought the black and white television news drama Good Night, and Good Luck to theaters in wide release. The film, which grossed $54 million globally, went on to be nominated for six Oscars at the 78th Academy Awards, including for best picture. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
George Clooney’s deeply felt docudrama Good Night, and Good Luck provides a snapshot of the moment in history in which a major American television personality named Edward R. Murrow took on the malevolent power of a muckraking U.S. senator named Joseph McCarthy and won.
Shot in black and white in a brisk “you are there” 90 minutes, the film, which screened in competition, lovingly re-creates the studios and backrooms of 1950s New York journalism at the CBS television network, where the men wore white shirts and dark suits, the women fetched the coffee and the morning...

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016) and “Ford v Ferrari” (2020) included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. And a slew of other champs — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015) and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019). Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by deftly blurring the lines between the real and the fantastic.

There’s a lot that’s frustrating about George Clooney’s new film “The Midnight Sky,” from its egregious borrowing from any number of better movies to its pacing issues, but thanks to a few grace notes, its shortcomings are mostly forgivable.
Premiering December 23 on Netflix, it’s a film that sees Clooney entering a new phase of his acting career, and it also represents an uptick among his directorial output, on the heels of the misbegotten “Suburbicon” and “The Monuments Men.” Audiences will find much of “The Midnight Sky” familiar, but that familiarity puts its original moments and ideas into sharp relief.
Some cinematheque or other needs to host a “George Clooney in space” retrospective, connecting his acting efforts in films as philosophically diverse as “Gravity,” “Solaris,” and “Tomorrowland,” and each of those efforts has certainly flavored this new feature, written by Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”), based on...

Space and silence are the structural bones of Netflix’s “The Midnight Sky.” Still, the spirit and heart are fixed within its visual decorations and taut narrative that allows director, producer and star George Clooney to examine uncharted and personal territories. Based on the book “Good Morning, Midnight” by Lily Brooks-Dalton, there’s a compelling case to be made that “The Midnight Sky” is his finest hour, both in direction and performance. He assembles an impeccable crafts team, all of which could dominate the below-the-line Oscar categories, even leaping to the front of a few. When a movie has a strong chance of dominating multiple technical races, nominations for best director and picture are usually not too far off. As movie theaters remain absent from the film-watching experience, the alluring drama is as close to “home” as you can feel in 2020.

The multi-faceted filmmaker and star has been nominated for Academy Awards in an impressive six different categories, a rare feat that includes for Best Picture (Argo), Actor, Supporting Actor (Syriana), Director, Adapted Screenplay (The Ides of March) and Original Screenplay. He has won twice, as a producer on Argo (2012) and Supporting Actor in Syriana (2005). Sam Mendes’ “1917,” a gripping survival story that unfolds in the crucible of World War I, inserted itself into the awards race on Saturday with a series of well-received screenings in Los Angeles and New York.
The movie, which is made with great craft and care, now faces the unenviable task of trying to elbow into a crowded field of best picture contenders, one that already includes the likes of Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite,” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
Many of these films have been on the festival circuit and these directors have subjected themselves to weeks of grip-and-grins with voters, giving them a head start. And yet “1917’s” epic sweep and undeniable artistry likely means that it has a strong chance of making the cut despite its 11th hour entry into the race. Director Sam Mendes will likely be...

Doug Liman is an independent filmmaker who gets away with murder in Hollywood because he boasts a string of major hits, from “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “The Bourne Identity” to “Edge of Tomorrow.” He often throws sets into chaos in order to achieve unexpected results. “My films have been successful and therefore the process has accommodated me,” he once told me. “When the studio said ‘no,’ I did it anyhow. Now, they don’t say no to me.”
Indeed. Liman’s films are consistently watchable and entertaining in their quirky unpredictability, even with his misfires (see: “Jumper”). Indie-financed “Fair Game” (Summit Entertainment), which earned mixed reviews (Metascore: 69) and struggled at the 2010 box office (domestic total: $9 million), is hardly the usual candidate for a re-release 8 years later. Yet here it is. “I’ve never seen a rule I didn’t think about breaking,” he told me on the phone.

Editors Margaret Sixel ("Mad Max: Fury Road") and Hank Corwin ("The Big Short") were the big Ace winners Friday night at the Beverly Hilton thanks to the split between drama and comedy. Meanwhile, "Inside Out" (edited by Kevin Nolting) and "Amy” (edited by Chris King) took animation and doc, respectively. This means"The Revenant" lost another opportunity for bragging rights for editor Stephen Mirrione. In terms of the bigger Oscar picture, Corwin becomes the frontrunner because of the surging momentum for "The Big Short," which took the PGA, although he'll have additional competition from Tom McArdle ("Spotlight"), who wasn't nominated by Ace but was nominated by the Academy for his less showy but very well crafted work on the Best Picture frontrunner. And Saturday's Screen Actors Guild Feature Ensemble Award showdown between "The Big Short" and "Spotlight" should further...

After many months of speculation, the full list of this year's Oscar nominees have been announced - just minutes after the reveal of the death of beloved thespian Alan Rickman.
"The Revenant" led the field with twelve nominations followed by "Mad Max: Fury Road" with ten and "The Martian" with seven. Next were "Spotlight" and "Carol" with six nominations; "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "The Big Short" and "Bridge Of Spies" got five; "Room" and "The Danish Girl" nabbed four; "Sicario," "Brooklyn" and "The Hateful Eight" scored three; and "Steve Jobs" and "Ex Machina" nabbed two.
Surprises? "Creed" and "Joy" scored only one nomination each for Stallone's and Lawrence's performances respectively. No Ridley Scott for director, Quentin Tarantino or Aaron Sorkin for screenplay, Charlize Theron for best actress, "Carol" for best picture, "See You Again" for best song, and of course - the distinct lack of racial diversity. Here's the list in full.

“There is one night, we all dream in Gold.”
The Academy has unveiled the new posters and TV spots for the 88th Oscars (Feb. 28, 2016).
The 2016 Oscar campaign illustrates the emotional power of movies and their ability to inspire all of us to achieve our dreams. Movies remind us that imagination is limitless. The Oscar is, at once, a representation of excellence in film and a tangible symbol that dreams can–and do–come true.
“The Dream campaign embodies what people love about the Oscars—the range of emotions and excitement that comes with those unforgettable moments in a live show,” said Christina Kounelias, Academy Cmo. “Fans also look for the comedy and the unexpected, and that’s what they’ll get with our host, Chris Rock. His comedic perspective will be a great complement to the more dramatic moments.”

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just announced there nominations and there’s quite a lot to process, so let’s start from the top. Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama Bridge of Spies and Todd Haynes’ gorgeous relationship drama Carol have tied for the lead with nine nominations apiece, with both films receiving nominations for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay (in their respective categories). Not far behind is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s revenge epic The Revenant with eight nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Editing.

It may have only received five nominations, but they were all major nods: Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale), and Best Editing. Get ready for the busiest and most important part of the awards season folks. Yes, with so many precursors beginning to announce again this week, including the Guilds, I’m going to have to fold more than one announcement into a single piece each day. It’s not exactly a problem as much as it is an embarrassment of riches, but still…it bears mentioning. Things are coming in hot and heavy as the Academy makes their final decisions, so pay attention to what happens in the coming days, especially before the Oscar voting deadline hits. We could see certain things get a last minute push at just the right time. We shall see if it leads to anything interesting, but snubs this week are far from ideal, though in specific cases aren’t a huge deal. Anyway, time to get down to business… What you’ll see below is...

Innaritu’s Birdman immersed us into a visceral world, resting on a single shot take. Editor Stephen Mirrione was a key part in helping to pull off that magic trick.

1. "The Revenant": Turns out that "Birdman" was merely a dress rehearsal for Alejandro G. Iñárritu and his fellow filmmakers. You couldn't rely on dialogue to anchor the narrative, and because of the wide lenses and vast landscape, a lot of the camera work was on cranes, which changed the rhythm. They also shot in sequence, figuring it out as they went along and then making discoveries and adjustments. Once again, they started with blocking rehearsals, but there were many more moving pieces to play with for editor Stephen Mirrione. They shot 200 hours of material and went about finding the story, trying to be engaging and immersive and understanding Hugh Glass' emotional journey. What they came up with beyond mere survival was about co-existence nature. This occurs right from the start with the opening battle, shifting points of view and alternating between realism and the abstract. 2. "The Big Short": Hank Corwin,...
