There are already conversations happening behind the scenes about who will take the reins when his time is up.

Doctor Who is going pretty steady at the moment. After a few years away from the show, Russell T Davies returned to the helm to usher in the latest Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, along with a new and rejuvenated story. The Whoniverse is now being made with Disney cash, meaning a bigger budget and exposure to the gigantic Disney+ audience.

The rebooted season 1 aired in 2024 to mixed reviews. Episodes ranged from fantastic, like "73 Yards," to downright disappointing, like "Space Babies." That said, Ncuti Gatwa's electric portrayal of the Doctor was a hugely positive takeaway.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has confirmed there are "conversations" under way about who will replace him on the show. Davies originally revived Doctor Who in 2005 and returned in 2023 for its 60th anniversary.

Davies previously confirmed that Disney's deal with the BBC was to co-produce three 60th anniversary specials and two full seasons with Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor, but that agreement will soon be coming to an end with the premiere of season 2 in April. And the series can trace its roots all the way back to 1963, meaning the show has been on for over 70 years, with some notable breaks in there; Doctor Who was pretty much off the air between 1989 and 2005, with only a TV movie to keep things going in between.

It's possible we're heading towards another break. Ratings for the most recent season — which stars Ncuti Gatwa as the titular Time Lord — have been below the expectations of Disney, which partnered with the BBC to produce the newest episodes. Disney gave the show a big cash infusion, and they want to see results.

A new season of Doctor Who once again starring Gatwa will air later this year, but there are rumors now swirling that it will mark his final outing as the lead character.

Well is he done or isn’t he? That’s the question fans have for former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat who has been popping up more and more as part of the BTS of the long-running science fiction series. Moffat recently penned the 2024 Christmas Special “Joy to the World" and before that, returned to Doctor Who to write the episode "Boom" in Ncuti Gatwa's first season as The Doctor. Between Moffat's increased presence as well as a misunderstanding during the Doctor Who panel at San Diego Comic Con surrounding the rumor of a potential return of River Song (Alex Kingston), a Moffat-created character, fans are on the edge of their seats wondering if Moffat will continue to return to Doctor Who is some bigger way than an episode here or there.

Why in the name of all that’s funny do American producers try to adapt British sitcoms for U.S. audiences? The easy answer: Sometimes, it works. Norman Lear’s All in the Family and Sanford and Son were huge hits based on U.K. comedies, while the American version of The Office is arguably the most successful (or at least the most imitated) sitcom of the century.

But alongside those successes are a series of miserable failures that got lost in translation. Here are five examples of failed American versions of classic British sitcoms…

1 Fawlty Towers

In 2000, the British Film Institute ranked Fawlty Towers first on its list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes, and Channel 4 had Basil Fawlty number two on its list of the 100 Greatest Television Characters. With its simple premise — an uptight dolt runs a dysfunctional hotel — Fawlty Towers was an obvious choice for an American update.

The 15th season of ‘Doctor Who’ is set to air in 2025. It’s the sixth season led by Russell T Davies as head writer and producer, marking his second stint after previously working on the show from 2005 to 2010. This will be the 15th season since the show’s revival in 2005 and the 41st overall.

Ncuti Gatwa will return as the Fifteenth Doctor, joined by Millie Gibson as his companion Ruby Sunday, and Varada Sethu as a new companion, Belinda Chandra. Nicola Coughlan made a guest appearance as a companion in the 2024 Christmas special.

The season, preceded by a Christmas episode, will have eight episodes directed by a mix of directors, including Alex Sanjiv Pillai and Amanda Brotchie. Russell T Davies leads the writing team alongside others, with Steven Moffat contributing to the Christmas special. Filming ran from October 2023 to May 2024.

There's something about a British crime drama that can be so much more satisfying than its American counterpart. Perhaps it's the performances, often executed by trained thespians. However, it's always gratifying when an unexpected romance turns out to be a hit with fans, proving that the characters have a spark. Whether it's an enemies-to-lovers relationship or the two characters seem like polar opposites, the last thing any viewer thinks is that these people would get together and that the romance would be good for them.
