Could “Without a Trace” be the next beloved crime procedural to get the TV reboot treatment? Series creator Hank Steinberg has “some notions” about what it could look like should he get the green light.
The original “Without a Trace” ran from 2002 and 2009 on CBS, following the cases of a missing persons unit of the FBI in New York City. The series stars Anthony Lapaglia, Poppy Montgomery, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Enrique Murciano and Roselyn Sánchez. The show won an Emmy Award for guest actor in a drama series for Charles S. Dutton in 2003 as well as the Emmy Award for outstanding art direction.
“If I had it my way, it might be more character-driven, shorter order, one case of the year kind of thing,” Steinberg told TheWrap in a recent interview. “That’s the way I would approach it if I can get the entities that own the material to go along with it.

The much-publicized backlash that has surrounded Andrew Dominik’s Nc-17 biopic Blonde has had the surprising, simultaneous effect of elevating interest in another Marilyn Monroe project that might otherwise have slipped into the past. In 2001, pioneering female filmmaker Joyce Chopra shot a two-part TV miniseries for CBS, adapting the very same Joyce Carol Oates novel Dominik would later spend over a decade bringing to screen for Netflix.
Dominik’s harrowing, nearly three-hour telling of the Marilyn story has been widely criticized for its almost exclusive focus on the many traumas of the Hollywood icon’s life, and for devoting little interest to the episodes where she exercised undeniable agency and self-determination. As The Hollywood Reporter’s lead critic David Rooney put it in his review, “This is a treatise on celebrity and the sex symbol that blurs not only reality with fantasy but also empathy with exploitation.

What becomes a legend most? Well, in the case of Marilyn Monroe, it’s countless books, feature films, TV movies, limited series, documentaries and even a Broadway musical. “Blonde,” the latest film about the influential sex symbol, who starred in such films as 1953’s “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and 1959’s ‘Some Like it Hot” and tragically died at the age of 36 in 1962, has been polarizing critics and audiences since it premiered at the recent Venice Film Festival.
Based on Joyce Carol Oates’ best-selling 2000 novel, “Blonde” offers a fictionalized look at the troubled actress. Currently in theaters and streaming on Netflix, “Blonde” stars Ana de Armas. She has been singled out by critics for her work, but director Andrew Dominik (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”) hasn’t been so lucky. “’Blonde’ has been conceived as a slow-motion death march,” said the L.A. Times Justin Chan.

It’s ironic that Andrew Dominik, director of the latest Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde,” wonders if anyone still watches Marilyn Monroe movies. I’d say the many Monroe biopics that exist, whether directly retelling the events of her life or loosely inspired by them like his own, says otherwise. It’s even more frustrating to look at the landscape of Marilyn portrayals onscreen and realize only two have been directed by women; and just one has been written and directed by a woman. It is that same movie, also based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel, that seems to have a better awareness of Marilyn and her movies.
CBS aired the two-part miniseries “Blonde,” directed by Joyce Chopra and written by Joyce Eliason, in 2001. The TV movie tells the familiar story of Norma Jean Baker, aka Marilyn Monroe (played by Poppy Montgomery), as she navigates a tortured upbringing with a mentally ill mother,...

“There is no meaning to life apart from the movie story,” writes Joyce Carol Oates in the opening pages of “Blonde,” “and there is no movie story apart from the darkened movie theater.” If it was inevitable that Oates’ novel about Marilyn Monroe would be made into a movie, it’s also a little ironic that that movie was made by Netflix — suffice to say that few who see “Blonde” will do so in a darkened movie theater. How many potential viewers are scared off by its runtime of 167 minutes is impossible to say, but there is a good reason for its protracted length: The book is similarly imposing at 738 pages. A finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, Blonde was released in 2000 and adapted once before — not that the CBS miniseries starring Poppy Montgomery garnered nearly as much attention as this new version has.

The Missing Persons Unit of Without a Trace solved dozens of fictitious disappearances, with Anthony Lapaglia, Poppy Montgomery, Enrique Murciano, Eric Close, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and Roselyn Sánchez playing the show’s dogged FBI agents. And occasionally, the show helped solve actual cases, too: CBS shared information on real-life disappearances through public service announcements during Without a Trace broadcasts, and in July 2005, a kidnapped brother and sister were found as the direct result of one of the Without a Trace PSAs. Without a Trace turns 20 on September 26, and in honor of that anniversary, we’re rounding up IMDb voters’ picks for the show’s 10 best episodes. Read on, and then check out the episodes on HBO Max and The Roku Channel, where they’re currently streaming. 10. Signed, Sealed, Delivered: The Vows We Have Made finally joins Shane (Kristin Booth) and Oliver (Eric Mabius) in holy matrimony.
It's been a long a lovely road for the two beloved characters to finalize their union, and we had a chance to chat with both stars about what you can expect from the movie.
Put simply: you will not be disappointed.
Kristin has been hard at work on various projects, including The Boys, where she's playing a character from the original Supes, one of the T and T twins (Tommy and Tessa).
Going from that environment back to the world of the Postables, Kristin hoped she hadn't lost Shane after so long apart.

While audiences’ won’t be seeing Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe biopic till 2022, author Joyce Carol Oates, whose novel “Blonde” is the basis for the film, apparently has. Oates took to Twitter on Sunday to praise director Dominik as well as star Ana de Armas.
Oates called the film “an exquisite portrait of Marilyn Monroe by Ana de Armas & director Andrew Dominic; one without the other could perhaps not have worked this magic. the tone of the film is hard to classify, not surreal but not totally realistic, not “horror” but suffused with the dread of horror.”
Rumors have swirled on social media with regards to how Dominik approached the feature, including unsubstantiated claims that the movie is heavily sexual and includes a significantly violent rape scene. Neither Dominik nor Netflix have responded to those claims, though based on Oates’ continual praise for the movie it seems evident he’s...

Stan has announced a slew of new local commissions as it ramps up ambitious plans to have around a third of its first-run slate come from original production.
These include Hoodlum Entertainment feature film Christmas on the Farm, Matchbox Pictures drama Bad Behaviour, and a number of projects with Roadshow Rough Diamond, with whom the Nine-owned streamer has extended its partnership. With the latter it is readying a third season of Bump and a spin-off, Year Of, as well as a Gregor Jordan-helmed crime drama, Ironside.
Last year, Stan flagged it intends to invest in more than 30 productions per year within five years, drawing on Nine’s production facilities and co-productions with international partners including Hollywood studios and international networks.
Earlier this month, the service announced a children’s feature film initiative with the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (Actf), and it has a lengthy list of upcoming local projects...

If you were hoping to watch Cuban actress Ana de Armas take on the mantle of Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” we hate to be the bearer of bad news. The Netflix biopic, based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name, will not be released this year.
The news, originally reported in Variety, now says that the Dominik-directed and scripted biopic will be released sometime in 2022.
Rumblings about the movie’s released date being moved have been louder of late, in spite of the movie being briefly seen in a promotional video from Netflix this year, wherein the streamer touted releasing a new movie every week in 2021. Back in June, Cannes general delegate Thierry Frémaux said that Netflix had turned down an out of competition slot for the feature. Frémaux said about the film, “Andrew Dominik’s film [‘Blonde’] could have been ready — it’s beautiful, I saw it.

The long awaited first-look of Jensen Ackles in the Soldier Boy supersuit for Season 3 of the hit series 'The Boys'. The Super Suit was designed by Laura Jean Shannon and concept artist Greg Hopwood. When designing the Soldier Boy Super Suit, Shannon noted, "Soldier Boy is the original bad ass. Our goal was to highlight a bygone era of overt masculinity and grit. With that pedigree we dove headfirst into baking in an all-American quality grounded in a military soldier’s practicality with a heavy dose of old school cowboy swagger. We knew that the actor had to have Steve McQueen looks and chops with a John Wayne attitude, luckily Jensen Ackles embodies all of that."
Knowing that Soldier Boy is a fan-favourite character from the original graphic novels, Showrunner Eric Kripke knew the importance of the Super Suit, saying, “When I cast Jensen as Soldier Boy, the first thing I said was,...

After years of making a name for himself in New York theater, Mark Ruffalo was on the cusp of breaking in to high-profile movie roles when television came calling.
In 1999, Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson had been handed a 13-episode order from Upn for a cop drama “The Beat.” Fontana and casting director Alexa Fogel had been impressed by Ruffalo’s work on stage and recruited him to co-star in the series as the hotheaded ladies-man New York City beat cop Zane Marinelli.
Fontana and Levinson’s track record with NBC’s indelible “Homicide: Life on the Street” and HBO’s arresting “Oz” lent credibility to “The Beat.” The show promised to be envelope-pushing, if only because nobody was watching Upn anyway. The pilot was directed by Levinson. Ruffalo had more than a few shirtless scenes in the early episodes.
“Tom had seen me in plays and was a fan.

The adventures of Cat Chambers are over.
ABC has canceled Reef Break after one season and 13 episodes, according to reports.
The Poppy Montgomery-led series focused on a pro surfer, a former smuggler and con artist who worked as a fixer for the government on the fictional Reef Island.
The supporting cast included Ray Stevenson, Desmond Chiam, Melissa Bonne and Tamala Shelton.
The series was filmed on the Gold Coast of Australia, and was initially produced for French broadcaster M6, but ABC later stepped in, effectively making it a co-production.
As such, it was always difficult to rule the series a success or a failure because ABC paid a fraction of the cost as a result.
It's unclear whether M6 plans to continue with the series, but it will likely have to go above and beyond in the ratings to prove it should return.

Reef Break, the crime drama headlined by former Unforgettable and Without a Trace star Poppy Montgomery, which had a 13-episode run on ABC this past summer, will not be returning to the network.

“Reef Break” will not be back for a second season at ABC.
The series debuted back in June on the broadcaster and aired 13 episodes, with the finale airing on Sept. 13. It starred Poppy Montgomery as Cat Chambers, Ray Stevenson as Jake Elliot, Desmond Chiam as Wyatt Cole, Melissa Bonne as Ana Dumont and Tamala Shelton as Petra.
It focused on Chambers, a thief-turned-fixer for the governor of a stunning and seductive Pacific Island paradise. Impulsive, reckless and irresistible, Cat’s less-than-perfect past gives her an instinctive gift for understanding crime and criminals.
“Reef Break” was created by Ken Sanzel. Mark Rosner, Montgomery, Steve Pearlman, and Ruthanne Secunda served as executive producers on the series. It was produced by ABC Studios and ABC Studios International in partnership with M6.
The show failed to find a significant audience or critical acclaim with its release. In his review for Variety, Daniel D’Addario wrote:...

Disney Television Studios has axed ABC Studios International, the London-based unit which has a first-look deal with Hoodlum Entertainment and co-commissioned The Gloaming with Stan.
The London-based unit led by Keli Lee, ABC Studios’ managing director, international content and talent, appears to be a victim of Disney’s $US71 billion acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets.
Disney TV Studios, which encompasses ABC Studios/ABC Signature, 20th Century Fox TV and Fox 21 TV Studios, is re-evaluating its UK presence and overall international strategy, according to Variety.
However the move may not have any immediate or even longer term impact in Australia. Hoodlum had renewed its first-look deal with ABC Studios International and Disney Media Distribution will handle sales of The Gloaming.

Today’s declaration by Nancy Pelosi of an official impeachment inquiry into Donald Trump’s conduct in office makes the March 22 submitted Mueller Report seem like a tome from another era.
However, that era isn’t quite so far away that the officially entitled Report on the Investigation into Russian Interference in the 2016 Presidential Election can’t still be brought to the Saban Theater on October 21 for a fundraiser for the Democrats. CBS has ordered action pilot The International, starring Dolph Lundgren and produced by Sylvester Stallone.
Dolph Lundgren has been putting in a lot of work with onscreen Rocky IV rival Sylvester Stallone ever since their reunion in 2010’s The Expendables, which yielded sequels and substantially improved opportunities. Indeed, this imminently-ending decade has seen a proper comeback for the ‘80s action icon; a comeback that will shift to the small screen as the star of a TV project, with Stallone involved.
The International is the newly-revealed title of said TV project, which – in the latest development – has procured an order by CBS. The move is the culmination of some solicitation after the hourlong action pilot, with Lundgren set as its star, was shopped around back in August by Tony Krantz’s Flame Ventures, reported Deadline.

Leading out of that, Family Food Fight‘s premiere did 2.9 mil and a 0.6, while Poppy Montgomery’s light-as-a-feather Reef Break debuted to 2.9 mil/0.5.
*Though it doesn’t hold a candle to playing putt-putt with competitive twin sons

“Reef Break” is dropping in on CBS’ “Hawaii Five-0” wave. The new ABC crime drama swims in the same waters as the classic reboot – criminals are foiled against a tropical backdrop – but is more content to hang loose than go high octane. It’s the series equivalent to a vacation in that it tickles the brain but doesn’t tax it. It’s wish-fulfillment that’s the stuff of beach reads.
Poppy Montgomery of “Without a Trace” and “Unforgettable” fame retains her gun but trades drab trousers for minidresses and a wetsuit to play Cat Chambers, a former cat burglar thief who’s hired by the governor of the fictional Pacific Island of Nimitz Bay to take care of thorny issues that are better not publicized. It’s a story that’s been done before, and this narrative familiarity saves the show from excessive setup. Why waste time with smaller...

Unmoored from reason or shame and buoyed by its willingness to be as silly as it wants to be, the new ABC drama “Reef Break” is a wildly unserious piece of television. In that, it’s a bit refreshing — a network series that embraces its network-iness, that has absolutely no ambition beyond evoking a smile. “Reef Break,” about a thief-turned-fixer who finds herself involved in fighting crime on a Pacific idyll, is not particularly distinguished, but as an example of a particular sort of television-making, it’s better-done than it might be.
The series’s cold open is emblematic. Flying into a small Hawaiian island, Cat Chambers (Poppy Montgomery) susses out the flight’s air marshal. Once the plane has landed, she tells him that a fellow passenger is armed and has an open wound bleeding through his shirt; she suspects he committed an armed robbery before the flight. As...
