A remake that took two years to make couldn’t entertain its audience fully for more than two hours and managed to stay on the right lane only for half its runtime. “Vidaamuyarchi” (meaning: Perseverance) is a Tamil road action film starring Ajith Kumar as Arjun, Trisha Krishnan as Kayal, Arjun Sarja as Rakshith, Regina Cassandra as Deepika, and a mix of some Indian and Azerbaijani actors. Directed by Magizh Thirumeni, the film attempts to deliver a gripping action thriller but ends up diluting its core by focusing on unnecessary emotional baggage.
Arjun, the protagonist, was a charming man in his early days but has grown bitter over time. Kayal, once drawn to his presence and personality in their youth, was deeply in love with him. That was twelve years ago. Now, the once-happy couple is struggling with their marriage, on the verge of separation. Before the divorce, an unexpected...

March 17, 1951 was a great day in history, because that’s the day Kurt Vogel Russell entered the world. And while he would go on to become one of the biggest icons of the eighties and nineties, many folks don’t know that Russell started as a child star for The Walt Disney Company, even acting opposite his future life partner Goldie Hawn in The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968) – although they wouldn’t get together until Russell ended up in another movie starring Goldie Hawn, Swing Shift (1984). From the sixties into the seventies, he starred in Disney flicks like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), but as the studio’s movies started to flop and Russell got older, a change of pace was needed. Arguably, Russell’s career took off when he began working with director John Carpenter, with the first movie being 1979’s TV movie Elvis, but what...

Stephen King may be best known for his horror stories involving monsters and murder, but he just as often deals with headier, more mature themes of alcoholism and domestic abuse. About the former, King can speak from experience, having wrestled with substance addiction throughout the 1980s. About the former, he luckily didn't experience it first-hand but is drawn to stories of children who are victimized by their alleged caregivers. This was certainly true of his summertime epic "It," which featured children's domestic turmoil as a parallel to the supernatural monster stalking them.
As such, King is sensitive to stories that mishandle themes of abuse. There is a certain kind of Hollywood melodrama that explores the psychological trauma experienced by abuse victims, but that wraps up their stories in a neat little bow, declaring that abuse can simply be "gotten over" with a few trips to a shrink and some kind of hackneyed reconciliation.

Kurt Russell sure has an illustrious career. We've seen him play a living planet, Wyatt Earp, Santa Claus, and (depending on whether you stand with MacReady or Childs in "The Thing") the killer of a shape-shifting alien. This guy has done it all and more, which makes it understandable that there are so many favorites to choose from. Ask the man himself, though, and there's a trio of Kurt Russell gems that he thinks were massively overlooked.
The big three were selected during an interview with FilmInk when the actor was promoting "The Hateful Eight." After the eight-year gap between his then-fresh new collaboration with Quentin Tarantino, the duo's first pairing was just starting to get some love, as well. "I'm beginning to have people come up to me, now, and say, 'I just saw 'Death Proof'; that was great,'" recalled Russell. The film, which was part...

James Cameron is about to complete his latest blockbuster sci-fi trilogy with Avatar 3 after his last blockbuster sci-fi trilogy was finished by a different director. Since 2009, Cameron has been almost exclusively working on his ambitious plans for four (or possibly as many as six) Avatar sequels. The immense blockbuster success of Avatar: The Way of Water proved there’s still an audience for Cameron’s mind-blowing 3D spectacle. The third movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is hoping to replicate that success on December 19, 2025.
Much like The Way of Water, Fire and Ash will explore new corners of Pandora and introduce new variants of Na’vi. In this one, audiences will go to the fiery volcanoes of Pandora and meet the “Ash People.” As with the previous films, Cameron is directing, co-producing, and working on the script for the threequel. This isn’t the first time that Cameron has mounted a major sci-fi movie franchise,...

Ahead of the opening of Gerard Butler's Den of Thieves 2: Pantera this coming weekend, another one of his films is currently climbing the streaming charts. Last Seen Alive, which was a massive box office and critical bomb in 2022, is at number two in the Max international streaming charts. This despite a truly horrendous score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film has a respectable cast with Butler, Jaimie Alexander (Thor), Russell Hornsby (The Hate U Give), and Ethan Embry (Sweet Home Alabama), and was directed by Brian Goodman, mostly known for his acting. Last Seen Alive follows Will (Butler) as he searches for his soon-to-be ex-wife, Lisa (Alexander), who goes missing while at a gas station. As is typical with these types of films, Will finds himself up against the small town's criminal element, while also on the run from the authorities.

Since the earliest days of Hollywood, audiences have signaled a desire for some of their favorite stories to continue in the form of sequels, with franchises like Star Wars and Halloween being kept alive for decades. The idea of the sequel has always been hit or miss, with some filmmakers wanting their best stories to be left at one, while studios insist on keeping their ideas alive. Naturally, this has been reflected in the quality of some movies, which can either delight or divide audiences.
While some sequels rank among the greatest and most successful films ever made, others are among the worst. In the middle, however, audiences have a long list of underrated continuations, some of which failed to live up to a predecessor while others were quickly overshadowed by the next entry. Some of these movies simply flew under the radar or weren't appreciated for their time, but have aged incredibly well.

Finding a satisfying ending for a movie is no easy feat. The amount of pressure on the filmmakers to do so is immense, as they know that the ending will likely be the part that sticks with the audience the most. Therefore, it is crucial to make sure that the final moments before the credits roll will leave the viewers with a positive impression of the film.
Just as easily as a bad ending can ruin an otherwise great movie, a spectacular ending has the power to improve the overall quality of an otherwise underwhelming film. Even some of the greatest directors of all time can sometimes struggle with finding the right way to end a story. Likewise, some of the best movies ever made are remembered as such partially due to their endings. Even some not-so-great films still managed to work due to their final minutes.

Despite some war movies telling compelling stories and being visually spectacular showcases of pure cinema, these achievements dont always equate to astounding box office success. Several incredible war movies have flopped at the box office, being outshined by bigger releases or sadly being forgotten by modern viewers. Although a box office flop doesn't necessarily mean a financial loss, it often implies that the film didn't meet its potential or expectations.
Many of the best war movies ever didnt earn big at the box office, and there were many powerful depictions of lesser-known conflicts that viewers didnt turn out for. While some of the best directors of all time have put passion and power behind extraordinary cinematic showcases of battle, conflict, and warfare, these have not always earned the kind of enduring legacy they deserve despite having such a high quality. Matthew McConaughey has proven himself as a jack of all trades in Hollywood. He's starred in everything from a handful of 2000s romantic comedies to heavy-hitting dramas like The Lincoln Lawyer and Dallas Buyer's Club (for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor), not to mention his role as a stripper in Magic Mike, a disturbing villain in Killer Joe, an animated koala in the Sing franchise, or his iconic role in Dazed and Confused. McConaughey is able to fully embody any role he takes on.
However, in U-571 and Free State of Jones, the celebrated star takes on a totally different genre: War. Portraying rugged men who manage to be compassionate yet headstrong leaders while running head-first into battle seems to come naturally to him. After the still entertaining but undeniably sillier Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, the Terminator franchise was ready for salvation. But what would be the next step? Arnold was fully engulfed in his political career; James Cameron would rather remake Piranha 2 than return; and per the usual for this franchise….no one even knows who owns the rights! This is What the F*ck Happened to Terminator Salvation.
A bit after Terminator 3’s release, both Nick Stahl and Claire Danes were recast to return as John Connor and Kate Brewster in the next installment of the franchise. Jonathan Mostow (director of Terminator 3) was also involved and helping with the script but a retread of Terminator 3 sounded dreadful. On top of that, the rights situation was once again a mess…. After months of fighting, lawsuits, and distribution hassles…. the rights to the franchise were again sold. This time,...

The following contains major spoilers from Accused Season 2, Episode 2, "April's Story," which debuted Tuesday, Oct. 15 on Fox.
Accused Season 2, Episode 2, "April's Story" does a 180 from the Fox show's heartwrenching season premiere -- but it's no less intense or well-crafted. The episode maintains the drama's commitment to deeply thought-out scripts, portrayed by actors who understand the layers to the material. And in doing things almost completely different from "Lorraine's Story," it reminds audiences how broad of a range this anthology series has.
"April's Story" features Orange is the New Black star Taylor Schilling as April Harris, a hard-working nurse who finds herself having the worst day of anyone short of Jack Bauer. As audiences see all the little things that push April to the edge, they're also horrified by what her actions lead to. And what could have been a straightforward and melodramatic road rage thriller -- the stuff of Lifetime...

It's safe to say The Terminator franchise feels like it may have peaked some time ago. But if series creator James Cameron has his way, the glory days are set to return for the apocalyptic sci-fi saga. Cameron knocked it out of the park with Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but after that, things got messy as he stepped away from the franchise. Jonathan Mostow's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines carried on without him, and Terminator Salvation (directed by McG) tried to shake things up by diving into the war with the machines as Christian Bale took on the mantle of John Connor.

The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of Terminator Zero, now streaming on Netflix.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Terminator Zero is the fact that Skynet isn't the only artificial intelligence in this narrative. This second AI is the entity known as Kokoro. It gives the franchise a fresh feel. 2019's Terminator: Dark Fate moved away from Skynet, admittedly, when it introduced Legion in a rebooted timeline.
But the existence of a second AI in this particular timeline is noteworthy because Skynet still exists. It's not defunct or replaced by Legion. With that in mind, here is a comprehensive analysis of Kokoro. And how she is being set up to change the property in a massive way.

James Cameron's 1991 action spectacular "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" felt, at the time, like the biggest movie imaginable. Cameron upgraded his low-budget 1984 original into one of the slickest, most visually innovative action movies made to date, featuring a robotic villain that could transform into a living blob of shape-shifting mercury-like metal. The villainous robot, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), travels back in time from the future to kill the adolescent John Connor (Edward Furlong), destined to lead a resistance force against an army of machines. Yes, the future in Cameron's movies is bleak; robots will soon achieve consciousness and, almost instantly, detonate a nuclear bomb.
Luckily, John has his mentally unbalanced mother Sarah (Linda Hamilton) to look after him, as well as a "good" time-traveling Terminator robot (Arnold Schwarzenegger) reprogrammed to protect him. By the end of the film, it seems that the characters were able to close off several causality...

Without a shadow of a doubt, the Terminator franchise has been one of the most popular of all time. While the recent movies didn't get as much love, the James Cameron films remain top-tier stuff. To that point, Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day are regarded as some of the best action movies ever.

Before Jonathan Mostow attempted to break out with big sci-fi films like the much-maligned Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and the Bruce Willis movie Surrogates, he made a humble little missing persons thriller with Kurt Russell called Breakdown. The paranoia film is an underrated gem that features one of the last great performances of the late J.T. Walsh. Kurt Russell-headlined thriller Breakdown is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK – more details here.
It took a fair amount of time between the film’s US and UK release for the movie Breakdown to land in cinemas over here. If memory serves, by the time it did – in an era of heavily staggered release dates – the film was already on video in the US. Still, Breakdown was absolutely worth the weight, arguably the high point in Kurt Russell’s run of 1990s hit movies.
Directed by Jonathan Mostow (and it’d be a film that’d prove a stepping stone to him getting the Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines job), Breakdown co-stars Kathleen Quinlan and J T Walsh (in one of his final roles), and the conceit is a simple one: a couple break down, the husband stays with the car, the wife gets a...

The director's job includes understanding how small changes can improve a movie. Some franchises continue with disappointing sequels instead of addressing past weaknesses. Lackluster movies could have been spectacular with a top Hollywood director at the helm.
Scattered throughout Hollywood are movies that are just a little disappointing, leading me to believe that they would have been more impactful with a different director making some slight changes to the story. In some of these cases, I have a hard time describing exactly what went wrong when it just feels a little bland. When Kurt Russell shed his Disney child star image once and for all as the leathery, laconic renegade Snake Plissken in John Carpenter's dystopian action hit "Escape from New York," he seemed poised for a long career as a handsome, rough-and-tumble leading man, the John Wayne-Steve McQueen hybrid America needed now that both had hit the soil. Russell, however, had other plans.
For starters, Russell didn't dig the laconic shtick. After a tonally similar performance as the perpetually cheesed-off R.J. MacReady in Carpenter's "The Thing," the actor sought to send up his tough-guy persona in goofball action flicks like "Big Trouble in Little China" and "Tango & Cash." He also gleefully made a fool of himself in broad comedies (memorably/infamously in "Overboard" and "Captain Ron"), while playing in-over-their-heads everymen in thrillers like "The Mean Season" and "Unlawful Entry." He could still do the gruff act when...

"Austin Powers" is arguably one of the most beloved comedy movie franchises in history. Beginning with "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" in 1997, Mike Myers helped craft a James Bond spoof that came at just the right time, with "GoldenEye" reviving 007 to kick off Pierce Brosnan's tenure with the character. For as much as the movie is remembered, it actually didn't top the box office when it opened -- the film lost out to an oft-forgotten Kurt Russell thriller.

In a 2021 interview with Forbes, Mostow recalled the film's opening weekend, as it was in a...

In Jonathan Mostow's 1997 thriller "Breakdown," Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan play a happily married couple driving their high-tech SUV from Boston to San Diego. By accident, they almost run into a pickup truck on the remote highways of Arizona. When Russell later meets the driver of the pickup (M.C. Gainey) at a gas station, tensions are high. Later still, when Russell and Quinlan are back on the road, their car suddenly stops. Quinlan offers to hitchhike into town to get help, while Russell stays with the SUV. It will be quite a while before they see each other again. It seems that Quinlan has been kidnapped! Russell has to drive around Arizona's remote backroads looking for clues, and eventually, he faces off against the kidnappers. "Breakdown" also stars the immortal J.T. Walsh, and a punky Jack Noseworthy.

It's clear by now that The Terminator franchise simply does not work without James Cameron. That's not to say that Arnold Schwarzenegger, co-writer and producer Gale Anne Hurd, or any other filmmaker who worked on those first two entries didn't contribute to the franchises' success. It's just that the next four entries (none of which were directed by Cameron) each had a varying degree of diminishing returns, both creatively and financially. What makes Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines stand out from those four entries is that director Jonathan Mostow (whose 1997 thriller Breakdown starring Kurt Russell is one of the '90s most underrated flicks), hand-picked by Schwarzenegger, is very aware that he is not James Cameron, and wisely, doesn't even try to be.

The following article contains discussion of substance abuse, including an overdose.
Edward Furlong reveals that he had signed a contract to reprise his role as John Connor in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Furlong recounts that he overdosed on cocaine while celebrating getting the role, which broke a clause in his contract. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is the worst of the first three entries in the franchise, and it may be for the best that Furlong didn't reprise his role.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day star Edward Furlong recalls losing out on a role in 2003's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Directed by Jonathan Mostow, the third film in the popular Terminator franchise sees Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 (though technically a T-850 this time) return for another action-packed adventure. Over the past three decades, few filmmakers have mastered their craft better than David Fincher. With a fastidious eye for framing and a deep focus on directorial details, Fincher has fashioned some of the most precisely orchestrated cinematic outings since his big screen debut in 1992. Yet, for most avid cinephiles and casual movie fans alike, Fincher will almost always be most associated with Se7en and Fight Club in the 90s and perhaps The Social Network and Gone Girl in the 2010s. If that’s an accurate assessment, then it begs the question – what is David Fincher’s all-time most underrated movie? While the recent release of The Killer is a worthy candidate, and a serious case can be made for Zodiac, The Game continues to be a criminally unheralded psychological thriller that, upon repeat viewings, toys and torments the audience with devious plotting and duplicitous tricks as only Fincher can forge.

Begin with The Terminator in 1984 to lay the foundation for the franchise's future war and characters. James Cameron's films offer a solid viewing order to follow if you want his directorial style. Consider watching based on quality, starting with Terminator 2 for the best experience in the series.
With six films released and lots of time travel in the mix, there are several potential options for watching the Terminator movies in order, with the chronological and release order making for different viewing experiences. The Terminator franchise has passed through several directors, with each putting their spin on the future war between Skynet and humanity, taking different approaches and incorporating alternate timelines. The franchise begins with Sarah Connor in 1984 LA. She is approached by Kyle Reese, a man from the future on a mission to protect her from a relentless killing machine known as a Terminator.

Walt Disney Studios has had a pretty abysmal year at the international box office in 2023. Between Ant-Man: Quantumania, The Little Mermaid, Elemental, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and perhaps most disappointing, The Marvels, the typically successful movie studio has lost an ungodly amount of money by producing overly expensive feature films that failed to resonate among the masses and earn back their financial investments. If the studio isn’t careful and the trend continues, Disney could break another record for the all-time biggest box-office bomb on record.
Speaking of which, what would your answer be if you had to guess Disney’s most notorious financial flop of all time? Well, up until recently, the correct response would have been John Carter, the disastrous 2012 adaptation of Edgar Rice Boroughs’ A Princes of Mars. However, after tallying up the receipts in 2023, Disney’s most infamous box office failure now belongs to The Lone Ranger,...

James Cameron's previous successes with sequels to hit franchises, such as Terminator 2 and Aliens, were followed by disappointing third outings that he did not direct. Directing the third movie in Avatar presents a new challenge for Cameron, as it is his first franchise "threequel" and the third entry in a franchise is often difficult to get right. Cameron's commitment to the Avatar franchise is evident, as he has been working on it since 1994 and waited 11 years for film technology to advance before releasing the first movie. His strong commitment to the franchise gives hope that Avatar 3 will be just as successful as its predecessors.
The upcoming Avatar 3 movie will mark a new first in James Cameron's career, breaking an exciting franchise record after his acclaimed outings in Aliens (1986) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). In 2022, Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel to the 2009 phenomenon, was released to critical and commercial acclaim,...

It's a miracle Peter Berg's "Hancock" exists at all.
The revisionist Will Smith superhero flick began life in 1996 as a spec screenplay by Vy Vincent Ngo called "Tonight, He Comes." The tale of a surly, alcoholic antihero was way ahead of its time; it was a refutation of comic book movies that weren't being made in the absurd volume we're seeing today. It was also startlingly original, which prompted no less an A-lister than Tony Scott to acquire it as a potential directing project. It was one of the hottest scripts in Hollywood, and, for six solid years, it went absolutely nowhere.
"Tonight, He Comes" nearly went before cameras in the early 2000s under the direction of Michael Mann, then nearly came to fruition with the likes of Jonathan Mostow and Gabriele Muccino at the helm. Vince Gilligan and John August were brought in to rework the script in...

David Ayer, director of the first Fast & Furious movie, feels left out and forgotten by the franchise despite its massive success. Ayer believes that people who attend industry parties and socialize were able to control and manage narratives, leaving him as an outsider. Ayer gave the original movie depth and meaning by setting it in L.A. and including people of color and street culture, which was groundbreaking at the time.

War movies, while addressing delicate subjects, allow filmmakers to explore historical events or tell epic fictional stories rooted in reality, but more often than not, these end up being so inaccurate that military experts have to step in to share the truth. Due to the topics addressed in war movies, these are often paired with the drama genre, sometimes combined with historical drama or biographical, depending on the story they are telling, though war movies have also teamed up with comedy for a lighter tone. However, in every case, either telling a true or fictional story, war movies are subjected to more analysis and scrutiny than any other genre.
Historical and biographical war movies will inevitably be analyzed by historians who will decide how accurate or inaccurate they are, but no matter if it's a fictional or real story, veterans and military experts will also come forward to point out...

While Avatar 3 is likely to be a financial success, the Avatar series would be the first franchise to break a James Cameron threequel curse if the sequel manages to replicate Avatar: The Way of Water’s critical impact. Avatar: The Way of Water is a massive box office success. The long-awaited Avatar sequel managed to outstrip even optimistic expectations with its staggering performance in cinemas, earning more than $2 billion and breaking all manner of records as Avatar: The Way of Water made movie history since its 2022 release.
However, despite this astounding success, Avatar: The Way of Water’s critical performance was less unambiguously impressive. While some of the symbolism in Avatar: The Way of Water was surprisingly smart, a large number of reviews called the blockbuster sequel an exercise in empty spectacle. Oscar winner Keith Carradine (The Power of the Dog), Emmy nominee Jason Ritter (Raising Dion), Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad) and Wrenn Schmidt (Nope) have joined the cast of Fox’s upcoming anthology series Accused, based on the International Emmy-winning British series. The project comes from 24 executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa and House creator/executive producer David Shore.
Developed by Gordon and co-produced by Fox Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television, Accused is based on the BBC’s BAFTA-winning crime anthology. It opens in a courtroom on the accused, with viewers knowing nothing about their crime or how they ended up on trial. Told from the defendant’s point of view through flashbacks, Accused depicts how an ordinary person gets caught up in an extraordinary situation, ultimately revealing how one wrong turn leads to another, until it’s too late to turn back.

Kevin Feige explains why it took so long for Namor to reach the big screen and how Ryan Coogler set him up to appear in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Before Feige was a major player at Marvel Studios, Avi Arad ran the company and helped cement multiple Marvel characters as household names for a new generation. As Arad didn't believe that a shared cinematic universe could work at the time, the film rights to several characters were sold off to different studios who all had their own ideas on how to adapt the characters. One Marvel character who would remain stuck in development limbo for years was Namor, the Sub-Mariner.
A Namor movie had been in development as far back as 1997 with Universal Pictures behind the production. The intent was to tell an environmental story about Namor trying to save Atlantis from pollution and nuclear underwater testing. Filmmakers such as Philip Kaufman,...

The inclusion of Namor (as played by Tenoch Huerta) in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" can mean very different things depending on where you're coming from. If you're well-versed in the history of Marvel Comics, then you're likely aware the Sub-Mariner has been around since the Golden Age of comic books and has gone through varying iterations since his creation in 1939, ranging from a grumpy do-gooder to a hot-tempered antihero. Alternatively, you may only know Namor for being Marvel's "not-Aquaman," a half-human, half-merfolk weirdo with mutant flying powers who's apparently too busy being irascible to put on anything but a pair of green swimming trunks.
Attempts to adapt Namor for the big screen in live-action date back to the late 1990s, at which time Philip Kaufman — the director of films as wildly divergent as the despondent 1978 "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" remake and the sexually subversive "Quills" — was in charge of the project.

The production journey of James Cameron’s years-in-the-making “Avatar” sequels has been about as ambitious a saga as the films themselves. But 13 years after “Avatar” became the highest grossing movie of all time, its first sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” is finally hitting theaters this December.
While the as-yet unnamed third “Avatar” feature is also wrapped and due in 2024 after being filmed back-to-back with “Way of Water,” Cameron recently revealed that No. 3 may be his last time visiting Pandora. Remember "Argo," the Best Picture Oscar-winning 2012 film where the CIA all but single-handedly saves the day during the Iran Hostage Crisis? Compared to 2000's "U-571," however, "Argo" is a stickler for facts. Directed by Jonathan Mostow ("Breakdown," "Terminator 3: Rise of the...
