At one point, mecha was the dominant genre for anime series. The genre had franchises for both children and adults, and they were constantly getting new series. One reason there were so many mecha anime is how easy the genre can sell merchandise, yet that wasn't the only reason. Some of the best anime of older eras were part of the mecha genre, making them impossible to ignore.
Even now, many of the mecha anime from the '80s, '90s, and 2000s are better than most modern anime series today. Rather than offering easy power fantasies about being the strongest or more popular, mecha anime often had far more to offer. Whether it was commentary on society or just passionate protagonists that are easy to love, it's impossible to go wrong with classic mecha anime.

Many anime series feature some power system. Iconic shōnen series like Naruto, Bleach, and Hunter X Hunter use these systems to communicate how strong their main characters can get and what they can be capable of with enough training. Most of these shōnen power systems take wildly different approaches to this technique. Isekai and other sci-fi fantasy anime offer a much more straightforward take on power systems.
Most Isekai anime have characters "level up" like a video game. This sounds simple on paper, but plenty of series use this concept creatively. Just like the shōnen anime, these power systems can vary in complexity. But there's no doubt that among Isekai anime, these rank as some of the best that current anime offers.

Scopper Gaban is a legendary pirate who served as Gol D. Roger's left hand, making him one of the strongest characters in One Piece. He may be in his late 70s, but Gaban can defeat some of One Piece's strongest characters with ease. Gaban's strength was comparable to Rayleigh's and Roger's, which means he likely possesses all three types of Haki and their advanced applications.
Gaban can defeat a few Yonko Commanders and several members of the Worst Generation, most of whom have Haki of their own and Devil Fruit abilities. It's no surprise that anime is filled with rich culture and has some of the most creative iterations of classic mythology and folklore. With how vast asian culture and mythology is, many series have taken inspiration from these well-known stories to create beautiful, memorable tales that leave lasting impressions on the viewers.
Some notable anime that take this approach are Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away and The Tale of Princess Kaguya, but there are some that aren't as popular that are just as fascinating and beautiful, such as Mononoke and Natsume's Book of Friends. Series based deeply on folklore and asian mythology often tell magical tales that are hard to find elsewhere.

The Fate series by Type-Moon is built around the dramatic Holy Grail Wars. These intense battles bring together Masters, skilled wizards, and Servants, who are the spirits of legendary heroes. Under the creative direction of Takashi Takeuchi and writer Kinoko Nasu, the franchise began with the visual novel Fate/Stay Night.
Since then, it has expanded into prequels, sequels, parodies, and adaptations, all connected by the iconic ‘Fate’ name. Anime has become the most popular way to experience this franchise, and it’s exciting to report about a new addition to the Fate anime world.
The next chapter, Fate/strange Fake, will soon join the lineup, as the anime is going to continue in January 2025, as we have already reported. Now, ahead of the release, a new trailer has been released and you will be able to see it below.

While Fall 2024 delivered plenty of great episodes for anime fans, audiences also had to contend with some potentially frustrating delays. Now, fan-favorite anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? V (DanMachi Season 5) is adding to the season’s woes. The highly anticipated series finale has been postponed indefinitely, with Episode 12 no longer set to air in 2024.
The curtain on Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? V was originally supposed to fall on Dec. 27, but fans will have to wait longer for the series’ dramatic conclusion. Production issues have mired the series, with a statement from the anime's production team earlier this week confirming its indefinite hiatus. Science fiction anime, and sci-fi media in general, cover themes other than the obvious advanced technology and extraterrestrial exploration. Tropes like artificial intelligence or post-apocalyptic settings can create profound narratives around sensitive or complicated issues. Ergo Proxy, for example, uses sentient machinery to touch upon the subjects of identity and nihilism.
Sci-fi commonly uses elements to explore abstract concepts such as humanity and corrupt societies, and exploring such potentially deep subjects often gets dark. And, often, these stories reveal that there is nothing more terrifying than humanity itself or more disturbing than the human mind.

Hunter x Hunter's new fighting game, Nen x Impact has been banned in Australia due to suggestions of sexual violence against minors according to a recent report. Though Hunter x Hunter is a believed series among anime fans, one of the series' main antagonists, Hisoka, remains a controversial aspect. It seems that controversy has now boiled over, with Hisoka's disquieting antics meaning that Bushiroad and Eighting's Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact won't receive classification in Australia, effectively banning the game.
In a report by Automaton Media, the Australian Classification board specifically said that it wouldn't classify the new game with its rating system due to "sexual violence against characters under the age of 18 by an adult male character." While the board doesn't clarify, anyone familiar with the series will know that the likely culprit is Hisoka. While this is obviously disappointing for Australian fans of Hunter x Hunter...

Anime characters usually make an accurate first impression on the people they meet and follow up with their words and actions, allowing everyone to fully understand them and what they stand for. It also helps when a character is friendly and emotionally open, and they love feeling understood and accepted. By contrast, other anime characters aren't well understood by the people around them, and sometimes, it hurts.
An anime character may be misunderstood if they are too timid to express themselves and allow rumors or misconceptions to outwardly define who they are. Or, a character may have a multifaceted personality and struggle to express one side while another side does all the talking. Fortunately, some of these misunderstood characters have at least one or two special people in their lives who see them for who they truly are, and not who everyone thinks they are.

Mythology has always been a big inspiration in media, from tv shows to movies and more. With Japan's rich history and extensive folklore, it's no surprise that many anime series pull from ancient mythos as well. Anime based on mythology can be found in just about every genre, from fantasy to slice-of-life, and many are some of the most popular titles in the medium. Unsurprisingly, anime also has its fair share of storylines inspired by folklore and myths from other countries, including Western mythology.
Whether they're based on Japanese myths or take inspiration from elsewhere, anime series based on mythology are often some of the most unique and creative out there. These anime series rewrite time-old folklore stories in a new light, creating characters based on the actual names and identities of real gods and placing them into new adventures. Most anime fans are familiar with Hisoka from Hunter x Hunter given his massive popularity. Among the many brilliant characters in the story, he stands out due to his questionable motives and a never-ending desire to test his powers. His introduction is truly bone-chilling with how menacing and ruthless he is.

Most of his decisions are driven by an incessant need for some thrill in life. Even though Yoshihiro Togashi has explored his character quite well, fans can’t stop thinking about his true personality beyond his conceitedness. Although worlds apart in aura, Togashi might have created Hisoka as a parallel to Netero in the story, given their similar motivations.

Generative AI is being surrounded by controversy lately. Sure, it can entertain viewers by having them listen to their favorite actors voice a line they wouldn’t normally say in a clip. However, it violates copyright laws, as these content creators use generative AI without getting permission from the owner of the copyrighted voice.

AI caused quite the disruption for the voice acting community in general, since it can literally imitate or create new voices for videos and television. It can potentially replace humans to voice act and companies that have portions of the copyrights can use these voices for their own benefits. This has been going out of hand and several voice actors in Japan have stepped up to address the problem.

In a significant move to combat the rising threat of unauthorized AI voice cloning, a coalition of popular Japanese voice actors has launched the “Nomore Unauthorized AI Generation” campaign on Oct 15, 2024.
This initiative aims to raise awareness about the exploitation of their voices, which are often replicated for commercial purposes without their knowledge or consent.
The campaign’s official X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and TikTok accounts went live on Oct 15.
A video posted across the platforms expresses the group’s concerns, stating, “Readings, songs, and even our voices, which we did not record, have been published online and are sometimes being sold. Our voices are our business tools, our lives, and an important part of ourselves that we have grown up with. Even if it was done by a fan who wanted to hear more of our voices, it is not pleasant to use it without permission.“

Isekai is a rare genre of anime that gives its characters a chance to get stronger in another world. While they can't do much on Earth, characters like Tanya von Degurechaff can be reincarnated into their new worlds with amazing magical abilities. Other characters, like Ghislaine Dedolida from Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, are already walking armies without the need for an after-death boost. No matter if they're from Earth or the new world, there are some incredibly powerful women in isekai.
Powerful women in isekai animes come in all shapes and sizes. Some are big, powerful sword-swingers who could bisect their enemies in an instant. Others are smaller, letting their magic handle battles for them. The strongest are both, combining rare magical abilities with an insane physical prowess to create the ultimate fighter on any battlefield.

Some anime moments are so shocking, they can barely be explained. Anime can have some of the biggest, most unexpected moments that nobody could have seen coming, either for better, or more often, for worse. Shocking moments in anime are rarely good. Once they happen, it's usually impossible to return to a normal time. Everything changes in shocking anime moments in an instant. Whether Paul Greyrat from Muskhou Tensei wants to save his son or Madara gets betrayed in Naruto: Shippuden, shocking moments can be permanent.
There are countless series willing to push their viewers to their emotional limits. Some shows, like Dragon Ball Z, are relatively straightforward, making their shocking moments hit even harder for their infrequency. No matter how often shocking moments happen, they're always devastating, leaving the main cast of characters with an entirely new situation in their hands.

Hunter x Hunter has garnered a great deal of attention for its complex plot, well-developed characters, and clever subversion of the Shonen tropes. The Chimera Ant arc, in particular, is well-known for its depth, moral ambiguity, and powerful emotional moments.

But this arc also introduced the omnipresent narrator, which is considered to be one of the most contentious elements of this series. While some viewers believe that the narration increased the series’ depth and gravity, others feel it robbed away the viewing experience by slowing down the action with needless explanation. This is most noticeable during the Palace Invasion, where the action and emotional suspense are overshadowed by prolonged narrations.

Yoshihiro Togashi’s Hunter x Hunter is one of the most popular manga and anime series. It has become a name that has transcended the borders of Japan, becoming a massive series all around the world. While the series is generally praised for its plot and action sequences, the voice actors did a fabulous job of breathing life into the characters.

Everyone has done a magnificent job, but one name has resonated quite well with the fans. It’s none other than Daisuke Namikawa, who voiced Hisoka in the Shonen series. His work has received an immense following, as he has been nicknamed The Voice of Weird.
However, much to the surprise of the fans, Namikawa-San has also voiced two fan-favorite characters from The Big Three. Interestingly, all three characters have one thing in common: they are all unstable, and their actions would make your skin crawl.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is the nearly decade-old sequel to Masashi Kishimoto's original Naruto series, advancing the story with Boruto Uzumaki, Naruto's son as the protagonist. While the shared setting between the two works has become modernized, it still carries the Naruto series' unique ninja-centric design philosophy for everything it introduces.
This means engaging in combat is as dangerous as ever for almost any character, proven through Boruto's battles alongside friends against some of the mightiest villains fans have seen yet. As such, many major characters, like Isshiki tsutsuki, lost their lives amid the conflicts in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations so far. While some of these major characters have revived since their deaths, the deaths are still noteworthy events that bear reflection.
