A Complete Unknown, The Wild Robot and Music By John Williams were the motion picture winners at the 61st Annual Cinema Audio Society (Cas) Awards. The celebration of excellence in sound mixing across film, television and non-fiction programming also honored Masters of the Air, Shogun and The Bear in its TV categories.

“A Complete Unknown,” “The Wild Robot” (which has been sweeping the guild and honorary society awards), and “Music by John Williams” were the live action, animation, and documentary winners at the 61st Cas Awards, held February 22 at the Beverly Hilton.

For TV, the Cinema Audio Society of sound mixers awarded “Masters of the Air,” “Shōgun,” and “The Bear” in the categories of non-theatrical/limited series, one-hour, and half-hour.

As previously announced, director Denis Villeneuve received the Cas Filmmaker Award and multi-award-winning sound mixer Tod A. Maitland Cas was honored with the Cas Career Achievement Award.

The most successful big-screen Broadway musical adaptation in history will arrive on the streamer four months after premiering in theaters.

Good news! The most successful big-screen Broadway musical adaptation in history officially has a streaming premiere date. Universal’s blockbuster film version of the first half of “Wicked” will be available to stream on Peacock beginning in March. While NBCU won’t be able to push people to its flagship streamer in the leadup to the March 2 Academy Awards, the company is taking full advantage of the movie musical’s extended premium video-on-demand (PVOD) window, which began on Dec. 31, 2024.

Key Details: “Wicked” will arrive on Peacock on March 21, 2025; four months after its theatrical debut. Talk about a gargantuan task. The feature take on Broadway musical Wicked, which is split up into two theatrical releases, had a first cut that was close to four hours long. Part 1 of Jon M. Chu’s 10-times Oscar-nominated movie was whittled down to 2 hours and 40 minutes. How long Part 2 is still Tbd.

“It was a long movie,” Oscar-nominated editor Myron Kerstein said at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees virtual panel. “And then of course, the second movie that was also assembled, so were able to watch both parts at the same time to inform us, the bigger story we’re telling and whether it should be one or two movies.”

Kerstein added, “That first cut didn’t have ‘Defying Gravity’ due to the strike.” That’s the big show-stopping climax number from Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba.

It is the most musical or music-inspired year in the British Academy’s history as Wicked, A Complete Unknown, and Emilia Pérez all scored BAFTA Film Awards nominations on Wednesday.

Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical closely follows the leader, Conclave, with 11 nominations, including performance nominations for its three main actresses, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Zoe Saldaña. Director Audiard scored three nods, namely for best director, adapted screenplay and best film not in the English language. Plus, Paul Guilhaume is nominated for cinematography and Camille, Clement Ducol for their original score.

Jon M. Chu’s Broadway adaptation of the beloved musical Wicked (which scooped up the box office prize at the recent Golden Globes) picked up a healthy seven BAFTA nominations, including Cynthia Erivo‘s first main BAFTA award nomination ever in the leading actress category for her portrayal of Elphaba, as well as a supporting actress nod for Galinda/Glinda Ariana Grande.

The Cinema Audio Society (Cas) has nominated the sound teams behind A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II and Wicked in its live-action feature category for the 2025 Cas Awards celebrating excellence in sound mixing.

All five films have been Oscar shortlisted in the sound category, which since 2021 has encompassed both sound editing and mixing. The five additional shortlisted films are Alien: Romulus, Blitz, Emilia Pérez, Joker: Folie à Deux and The Wild Robot. Traditionally, the winner of the Cas award in the live-action feature category has mirrored the Academy Award winner for sound. However, last year, Tarn Willers and Johnnie Burn took home the Oscar for The Zone of Interest while Cas awarded Oppenheimer.

The Cinema Audio Society has announced its nominees in seven categories for the 61st Annual Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing 2024. Sound mixing is meant to make a film’s environment, be it the most muted mumblecore world or the wildest, loudest fantasy, seem completely natural. Mixing requires specialized skill and artistry in the craft of sound, and Cas members review hundreds of projects to ensure the nominees truly reflect excellence in sound mixing in Motion Picture and Television entertainment.

The nominees they have chosen are, unsurprisingly, some of the most complex and musical film worlds of 2024, ones where the overall vibe is as important to get across as the story information and emotional resonance carried through dialogue, sound effects, songs, and score. “Dune: Part Two,” “Wicked,” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” are among the feature nominees, while “The Wild Robot,” “Moana 2,” and “Inside Out 2” rank among the animated nominees.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has returned to its annual spring ritual and announced its 2024-25 Board of Governors today. Among new first-time governors are Patricia Cardoso (Real Women Have Curves), elected to the Directors branch, and Jennifer Fox, who has produced the past several Governors Awards ceremonies, who was elected governor of the Producers Branch. Leaving the board from those positions are current Directors Branch Governor Susanne Bier and Producers Governor Jennifer Todd.

Other first-timers named today are K.K. Barrett for Production Designers, Chris Tashima for Short Films and Andy Nelson for the Sound Branch. Returning to the board after a hiatus is Lois Burwell from Makeup and Hairstylists branch.

The new Academy board of 55 members for the 2024-25 season comprises 53% women, while 27% of governors belong to an underrepresented racial or ethnic group.

Oscar-winning makeup artist Lois Burwell (“Braveheart”) is returning to the Board after a hiatus.

The results are in after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held elections for 17 seats on its 55-person board of governors, and the newly constituted board will include five rookies, one comeback kid and 11 continuing incumbents.

The five first-time governors will be Patricia Cardoso (directors branch), a 1996 Student Academy Award winner best known for helming 2002’s Real Women Have Curves, who will succeed Susanne Bier; Jennifer Fox (producers), an Oscar nominee for Michael Clayton and five-time producer of the Academy’s Governors Awards, who will succeed Jennifer Todd; K.K. Barrett (production design), an Oscar nominee for Her, who will succeed Tom Duffield; Andy Nelson (sound), a 24-time Oscar nominee who has taken home statuettes for Saving Private Ryan and Les Misérables, who will succeed Gary C. Bourgeois; and Chris Tashima (short films), an Oscar winner for the live action short Visas and Virtue, who becomes the first governor of the short films branch.

Fresh off some big executive moves, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced its newly elected 2024-2025 Board of Governors. The governors, whose advise on what should be the Academy’s strategic vision, help preserve the organization’s financial health, and assure the fulfillment of its mission, are set to take office at the first scheduled board meeting of the new term.

Incumbent governors, reelected to the board after a three-year term, include actress Rita Wilson and Warner Bros. Pictures executive Pam Abdy. Among those elected to the board for the first time is producer Jennifer Fox, who has helmed the Academy’s Governors Awards several years running.

The Academy has 19 branches total, each represented by three governors, except for the recently established Animation Branch, represented by two governors; the recently established Short Films Branch, represented by one governor; and the Production and Technology Branch, represented by one governor.

The Cinema Audio Society Awards took place on Saturday, honoring Oppenheimer, The Last of Us and The Bear with winning trophies this year.

The sound mixing team behind Oppenheimer took home the award in the live-action competition, beating the teams behind Barbie, Ferrari, Killers of the Flower Moon and Maestro.

Cinema Audio Society, which honors outstanding sound mixing in film and television, also handed out awards in the television categories to The Last of Us for best one-hour series and The Bear for best half-hour series.

In its animated feature competition, Cas awarded the trophy to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Other nominees included the teams behind Elemental, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, The Boy and the Heron and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. As for feature documentaries, 32 Sounds took home the award, beating out American Symphony, Little Richard: I Am Everything, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.

Everything Everywhere All at Once was named best picture at the 95th annual Academy Awards, which were handed out Sunday night.

Everything Everywhere also collected three acting awards, best leading actress for Michelle Yeoh, best supporting actor for Ke Huy Quan and best supporting actress for Jamie Lee Curtis. The film also won the best original screenplay Oscar and the best director trophy for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — aka Daniels — as well as best film editing for Paul Rogers. Heading into the show, Everything Everywhere led the nominees for the 2023 Oscars, with a total of 11, winning seven.

Elsewhere, Brendan Fraser was named best actor in a leading role for The Whale. German film All Quiet on the Western Front also scooped up four awards, including Oscars for best original score, production design, cinematography and international feature. Avatar: The Way of Water won best visual effects, while Top Gun: Maverick won the sound Oscar.

Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy combined their Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the third annual Best Sound prize are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Top Gun: Maverick” (16/5) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (19/5), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (9/2), “Elvis” (9/2), and “The Batman” (9/2).

The 23 craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a whopping 72 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work. The one responsible for the largest chunk is Andy Nelson, whose dual bids for “The Batman” and “Elvis” bring him to a record-fortifying career total of 24. With an unprecedented number of Oscar nominations for Irish talent and films this year, everyone was celebrating the green wave at the 17th annual Oscar Wilde Awards, held Thursday night — before the rain arrived — at Bad Robot in Santa Monica. “It’s amazing, there are 7 million people on that island, and all of them were nominated and are here tonight,” host J.J. Abrams joked, in a year when 25 percent of the Academy Award acting nominations are held by Irish actors.

The Oscar Wilde honorees this year were Irish actresses Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Jessie Buckley (Women Talking), Eve Hewson (Flora and Son) and An Cailίn Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), the first Irish language film nominated for an Academy Award. Created by the US-Ireland Alliance, the Oscar Wilde Awards celebrate the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to the movies, television and music.

To many people – and that includes many academy members – there might be something esoteric about the Best Sound category at the Oscars. And yet it might be one of the most important technical crafts involved with filmmaking. If you don’t understand what the actors are saying, then it’s harder to connect with them or what the filmmaker was trying to achieve. A movie’s score and sound effects also need to be properly recorded and balanced to make any film as much a sonic experience as a visual one.

There are also useful precursors for the category, such as the Cinema Audio Society Awards and the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, which give a clearer picture of which of the five Oscar nominees are considered the best by their direct peers.

The winners of the 59th Cinema Audio Society Awards were announced March 4 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. Oscar nominees “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis,” and “Top Gun: Maverick” were all nominated here as well, with “Top Gun: Maverick” proving the victor.

Other winners included “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Better Call Saul,” and “Only Murders in the Building.”

Hosted by comedian Ben Gleib, the evening also included previously announced honorary awards. Alejandro González Iñárritu accepted Cas’ Filmmaker of the Year honor, while five-time Oscar nominee Peter J. Devlin accepted the Career Achievement Award.

The sound mixing team from Top Gun: Maverick won the live-action feature competition at the 59th Cinema Audio Society Awards, Saturday night at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. The award went to production mixer Mark Weingarten, rerecording mixers Chris Burdon and Mark Taylor, scoring mixers Al Clay and Stephen Lipson, and Foley mixer Blake Collins.

Maverick topped a field that included the sound mixing teams on All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Batman and Elvis — a field that mirrors the Oscar nominations in sound, an award that combines sound editing and mixing.

Veteran rerecording mixer Andy Nelson describes working with Baz Luhrmann, Matt Reeves and Steven Spielberg in a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind The Screen.

This season, Nelson extended his Oscar nominations tally to 24, with a pair of noms for his work on Luhrmann’s Elvis and Reeves’ The Batman. In doing so, he also extended his record for the most noms in the sound category.

Describing Luhrmann as a “creative tornado” and Austin Butler’s performance in the title role as “brilliant,” Nelson details how they used much of Butler’s vocals in the film, as well as in the performances in the later half of the movie, a delicate blend with archival material of Presley. All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.

At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic took the BAFTAs for best film, alongside best adapted screenplay and best director, and hoovered up most of the craft honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).

Away from the Western Front, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four awards, including half the performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan landing supporting wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won leading actor for Elvis, and Cate Blanchett leading actress for Tar.

The 2023 Bafta Film Awards show is taking place today (February 19) from London’s Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank this year (it was previously at the Royal Albert Hall).

The show started at around 18:00 UK time, finishing at approximately 21:00, and will be broadcast with a time delay on BBC One starting at 19:00, with the final four awards broadcast live for the first time.

Austin Butler’s agent told him he would need to gain weight to play the older version of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” “I heard that Ryan Gosling when he was going to do ‘The Lovely Bones,’ had microwaved Häagen-Dazs and would drink it,” Butler tells Variety. “So I started doing that. I would go get two dozen doughnuts and eat them all. I really started to pack on some pounds. It’s fun for a week, and then you feel awful about yourself. But we were planning on shooting chronologically in the beginning. That quickly went out the window with Covid. It was just impossible.”

On this week’s episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Butler sits down to discuss receiving his first Oscar nomination for best actor. He also discusses renting an apartment after the Warner Bros. corporate cards were shut off following the Covid shutdown.

The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. The inaugural winner of Best Sound was, appropriately enough “Sound of Metal.” Last year, this prize went to “Dune.”

The sound branch determines the nominees in two stages. First, members of the branch cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters, announced on December 21, moving on to the second stage. Members who attend screenings of excerpts from these 10 semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated.

It can be difficult to differentiate the sound mixing of a film from the sound editing.

“The Batman” is a new iteration of the iconic caped crusader with director and co-writer Matt Reeves exploring Gotham City as a noir drama. In it, Batman (Robert Pattinson) is a crime-fighting detective who needs to solve riddles and uncover corruption to foil a serial killer targeting politicians.

Steven Spielberg, Martin McDonagh, Todd Field and the directing duo of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert were among those nominated in multiple categories for the 95th Academy Awards when nominations were announced Tuesday.

Everything Everywhere All at Once led the 2023 Oscars pack with 11 total nominations. This included three apiece for filmmakers Kwan and Scheinert, who were nominated for best picture, director and original screenplay.

Following closely behind in the nominations tally was The Banshees of Inisherin with nine. Director McDonagh was the recipient of three of those, with the filmmaker, who won an Oscar in 2005 for his short film Six Shooter, nominated for best picture, director and original screenplay.

Similarly represented in those three categories is Spielberg for his loosely autobiographical film The Fabelmans, which notched seven total Oscar nominations. Additionally, Todd Field is up for picture, director and original screenplay for Tár, which tallied six nominations.

In the season of the spectacle, the Oscar craft nominations were pretty evenly split, led by “Elvis” and the late-surging “All Quiet on the Western Front” with six. Next in line with four nominations were “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Topping out at three nominations each were “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Babylon,” and “The Batman.” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “The Fabelmans,” and “TÁR” were nominated for two craft awards apiece. And “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” and “Empire of Light” scored lone cinematography nominations for Darius Khondji (his second) and Roger Deakins (his 16th).

The nominations for the upcoming 95th edition of Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday by hosts Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams, with ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ leading the pack with as many as nine nominations.

The Colin Farrell-starrer film got nominated in the following categories — Best Supporting Actor (two nominations), Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Picture, Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay.

Rerecording mixer Andy Nelson extended his Oscar nominations tally to 24 with a pair of noms Tuesday for his work on Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis and Matt Reeves’ The Batman. This extends his record for the most noms in the sound category. Until Tuesday, he also was tied with Randy Newman for the third-most noms among living persons, with 22 noms. He now holds that distinction with 24 .
