1939 is often called Hollywood’s Greatest Year, and it is indisputable that a huge number of America’s greatest classics were produced in that single year. A usually ignored element of that greatness is that 1939 was also the year that Hollywood resumed production on horror films after a two-year pause. In late 1936 two major factors led to the practical death of the genre: the Laemmle family, of whom Carl Laemmle’s, Jr. was horror’s greatest advocate, lost control of Universal and the British Board of Censors began enforcing the “H” certificate, which for all practical purposes banned horror for its target audience in Britain. The loss of this lucrative market combined with dropping box-office receipts and mounting pressure from American religious groups, Hollywood saw no reason to continue producing horror. The phrase “horror is dead” has often been thrown around over the decades but in 1937 and 38, it was actually true.

Constance Cummings: Actress went from Harold Lloyd and Frank Capra to Noël Coward and Eugene O'Neill Actress Constance Cummings, whose career spanned more than six decades on stage, in films, and on television in both the U.S. and the U.K., died ten years ago on Nov. 23. Unlike other Broadway imports such as Ann Harding, Katharine Hepburn, Miriam Hopkins, and Claudette Colbert, the pretty, elegant Cummings – who could have been turned into a less edgy Constance Bennett had she landed at Rko or Paramount instead of Columbia – never became a Hollywood star. Lon Chaney on TCM: He Who Gets Slapped, The Unknown, Mr. Wu Get ready for more extreme perversity in West of Zanzibar (1928), as Chaney abuses both Warner Baxter and Mary Nolan, while the great-looking Mr. Wu (1927) offers Chaney as a Chinese creep about to destroy the life of lovely Renée Adorée — one of the best and prettiest actresses of the 1920s. Adorée — who was just as effective in her few early talkies — died of tuberculosis in 1933. Also worth mentioning, the great John Arnold was Mr. Wu's cinematographer. I'm no fan of Laugh, Clown, Laugh (1928), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), or The Phantom of the Opera (1925), but Chaney's work in them — especially in Hunchback — is quite remarkable. Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour, Bring Crosby Bob Hope isn’t my idea of a funny guy, but those who do enjoy Hope’s on-screen antics are in for a treat on Turner Classic Movies on Sunday, August 8. [Full schedule.] TCM will be showing no less than fourteen Bob Hope vehicles as part of their "Summer Under the Stars" series. Notable among those are two TCM premieres: Elliott Nugent‘s Nothing But the Truth (1941), co-starring the always delightful Paulette Goddard, and Sidney Lanfield‘s Where There’s Life (1947), in which Hope’s leading lady is the underrated Signe Hasso — who that same year was excellent playing opposite Ronald Colman in George Cukor‘s A Double Life. Although Australia sadly ended up as one of this year's biggest flops (currently at $39 million), filmmaker Baz Luhrmann has already started work on his next project - F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood confirms that this is Luhrmann's next gig and that he's already actively searching for a young actress to portray Daisy in the film. This isn't the first time Fitzgerald's book has been adapted - there was a 1974 film directed by Jack Clayton as well as a 1949 film directed by Elliott Nugent. However, I'm expecting Luhrmann's version to be much more grandiose and certainly very epic. First published in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby chronicles an era that Fitzgerald himself dubbed the "Jazz Age."
