With hits like Wet Hot American Summer and Arrested Development, Netflix has been riding high on nostalgic rebooting, but Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword Of Destiny shows a more vulnerable side to the streaming service’s original content (we’ll save Fuller House for the TV section). What once was a whimsical callback to acrobatic martial arts has become a repetitive, stone-etched journey that’s heavy on outdated pageantry, and light on mystical amazement.

Still based on Du Lu Wang’s source novelization (in theory), Woo-Ping Yuen steps in to direct a screenplay by John Fusco, but with Ang Lee nowhere to be found, ancient folklore becomes weightless, cut-and-dry whispers. This is a film built on patience and grace, which, unfortunately, are the two most mishandled aspects of Woo-Ping’s fifteen-years-later sequel.

21 years after Tom Berenger first played U.S. Marine marksman Thomas Beckett in the 1993 action-thriller Sniper, Beckett's legacy lives on in Sony Pictures' Sniper: Legacy. After the original film hit theaters in 1993, Tom Berenger returned as Beckett in two straight-to-video sequels, but in 2011, the franchise was revived with Sniper: Reloaded, which starred Chad Michael Collins as Thomas' son Brandon Beckett. This estranged father-son duo come face-to-face in Sniper: Legacy, available on DVD September 30, as they must work together to take out a rogue shooter who has been taking out high-ranking military leaders.

I recently had the chance to speak with Tom Berenger over the phone, where he offered a sneak peek into the production process, explaining how the original script's ending may have ended this franchise before it even started, the possibility of a new Major League movie, and much more. 2013 is here. Obviously its extremely early in the game, but the biggest moneymaker of the year so far has been Texas Chainsaw 3D. That says something about a landscape of movies full of reboots, remakes and sequels.What it says is that they work.

Is this a sad fact? Yes, in some ways its a bit disconcerting. In my mind I see a film industry that no longer embraces the original. Just look back at the 80′s and nostalgia kicks in with bitter sentimentality. But if you go back 20 years to 1983 you’ll find six of the top 20 films from that year were also sequels. Granted, six of the top ten films of 2012 were also sequels, the others including one reboot, a comic book film and two films based on novels (The Hobbit can even be classified as a prequel).

It’s hard to believe that in a month and two days that Michael & I, along with two other writers from St. Louis, will be making our annual 14 hour drive to Austin, Texas for one of our favorite things/times of the year, Fantastic Fest. This will mark my 3rd year covering the festival and Michael’s 2nd year. The first wave of films for the Austin based film festival Fantastic Fest featured a lot of titles that caught our eye, like Dredd 3D, Cockneys Vs. Zombies, Room 237 and the original The Shining. The second wave of films playing this year's Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, has been announced, and all we can say is start packing your bags right now!

The lineup also includes the world premieres of The American Scream, from the filmmaking team behind Best Worst Movie, and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, introduced by stars Scott Adkins and Dolph Lundgren. Fantastic Fest will take place September 20-27 in Austin, Texas, at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar.

Fantastic Fest is truly a unique event. There’s plenty of room for arthouse films and, on some occasions, the big awards players, but one theater that hosts There Will Be Blood might, the next night, see the premiere of something you’d catch on a weird cable station at 3 A.M. You don’t get that at Venice.

Such a programming mentality is reflected in the second set of titles: We have Leos Carax‘s acclaimed Holy Motors, Rian Johnson‘s Looper, horror anthology The ABCs of Death (as if it could premiere anywhere else), Sinister, and a whole batch of films I’d never heard of up until now. It’s wonderfully eclectic, and it only makes me wish I could be there come late September.

As if there was any doubt that he'd live up to his word, Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back.

Deadline reports that the former California governator is set to headline the Kim-ji-Woon-directed "Last Stand," which he had left following his recent personal scandal. The Western is about a broken-down man who needs to make a moral decision about whether he should stand up for his town or not. The film starts shooting in September.

Michael Chiklis To Be Jason Statham's Nemesis

Deadline reports that "The Shield" star Michael Chiklis is the latest actor to join the Jason Statham thriller "Parker," starring as the film's villain. The flick is being directed by Taylor Hackford, and is based on the Donald E. Westlake book series. Jennifer Lopez is reportedly in talks to play the film's female lead.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to take a break from his extended family duties and make his return to Hollywood with I Saw the Devil director Kim Ji-Woon's English language debut The Last Stand for Lionsgate. The film centers on a lone border sheriff tasked with stopping an escaped drug dealer from crossing into Mexico in a super car. IFC Midnight, the new genre label of IFC Films, has announced its first partnership with Fantastic Fest! Four brand new IFC Midnight acquisitions will screen at Fantastic Fest (Sept 23-30) and will simultaneously be available nationwide via the movies-on-demand platform of major national cable systems, including Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable and Bright House, and will be available in approximately 40 million homes. The films include: Philip Ridley’s demonic thriller Heartless (making its Us debut); Abel Ferry’s mountain climbing nightmare High Lane (making its Us debut); Josh Reed’s Ozploitation horror flick Primal (making its Us debut); and Simon Rumley’s hard-core Red White & Blue.

Two of the biggest names within the world of film distribution and film festivals are set to team up for what appears to be another step in the ever growing popularity of video on demand and film festival partnerships.

Following experiments like YouTube’s attempt at bringing in new viewers by streaming a collection of Sundance films, IFC and their genre label, Midnight, are set to team up with Fantastic Fest, to release four films, premiering at the festival, on their on demand channel.

The Philip Ridley film, Heartless will join High Lane (Abel Ferry), Primal (Josh Reed) and Red White & Blue (Simon Rumley) as the four feature films that premiere day and date at both the Austin, Texas based festival, as well as the IFC Midnight on demand channel.

Midnight has played home to films like The Human Centipede and Doghouse, as well as upcoming releases like Enter The Void...
