The term “box office bomb,” used to describe films that fail to recoup their budget, has been thrown around a lot over the years. Except for Battlefield Earth and Gigli, no other film has been on the receiving end of this term more than Showgirls. One of the films made in Hollywood by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, Showgirls has been the subject of ridicule by many and reevaluated in recent years as a clever satire by others.
Its presentation has been described as everything from exaggerated to campy, and the ostentatious performance by its star, Elizabeth Berkley, is far from subtle. Perhaps that’s the intention. Showgirls received numerous comparisons to All About Eve, and, at its core, includes the narrative of someone on a journey to stardom only to be fooled by the bright lights of the big city. The 1995 James Cameron-written cyberpunk thriller Strange Days proved to be a box office flop in its time and has failed to gain a cult following even now—in fact, barely anyone remembers this great 1990s action movie in spite of its big names. However, with its thematic relevance to present-day events, Strange Days deserves another look from modern audiences. Starring Ralph Fiennes as black market virtual reality (VR) dealer Lenny Nero, the film explores the societal impact of technological advances and mass violence.
Many great sci-fi movies got the future wrong, but oddly enough, Strange Days managed to predict quite a few things about the turn of the century as well as the American zeitgeist 30 years later. Civil unrest, police brutality, political corruption, and societal desensitization to mass violence are just a few themes from Strange Days, and while...

The following piece contains spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 1, "Buzzkill;" Season 8, Episode 2, "When the Boeing Gets Tough...;" and Season 8, Episode 3, "Final Approach."
When ABC began advertising the Season 8 premiere of 9-1-1, it was all about the bees. Showrunner Tim Minear joked that they wanted to "create some buzz," and they certainly did. After receiving an influx of new fans when Evan "Buck" Buckley kissed Tommy Kinard in the 100th episode, and another influx when ABC began hinting at a "Bee-nado," 9-1-1 is seeing huge same-day and streaming numbers -- the season premiere hit 9.8 million viewers after just 7 days of multi-platform viewing, and remains the top broadcast drama among adults 18-49. Just 3 episodes in, Season 8 is looking like it will give 9-1-1 a banner year.

Note: The following story contains spoilers from “9-1-1” Season 8, Episode 3.
“9-1-1” is no stranger to miraculous rescues, but Angela Bassett just pulled off the craziest one yet with Thursday’s plane landing extravaganza.
Concluding the three-episode event that kicked off with the ABC first responder drama’s buzzy Bee-nado, the latest episode followed as Athena Grant (Bassett) piloted a stranded passenger plane to safety with the help of air traffic control over the phone, her husband Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) and a very young video game enthusiast.
“What I love about being a part of ‘9-1-1’ is the ability to not only bring incredible moments of television to viewers, but we as actors get to play, too,” Bassett told TheWrap in an email. “I enjoy filming those intense action scenes and especially with our younger cast members. It’s fun to see the experience through their eyes.”

After a fast-paced and jam-packed seventh season, 9-1-1 is coming in hot so far with a fiery Season 8. The season premiere saw a car accident that released twenty-two million bees into Los Angeles, that merged together to create a tornado of bees, or a "Bee-nado." The show then took things to the next level by getting Sergeant Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) stuck on a crashing plane during the Bee-nado, and needing to save Dennis Jenkins (Glenn Plummer) from the many people trying to kill him.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for '9-1-1' Season 8, Episode 2.9-1-1 Season 8 kicks off with one of the strangest emergencies in the series' history: a tornado of killer bees (colloquially dubbed "bee-nado"). With roughly 14.8 million of them swarming Los Angeles, the first responders get creative as they deal with situations they could've never been trained for. Along with this unique premise, the Season 8 premiere also sees Police Sergeant Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) tasked by the FBI to transport an inmate back to Los Angeles to testify in a sex trafficking case. Seems easy enough for her, until it's revealed that the prisoner she's escorting is Dennis Jenkins (Glenn Plummer), the man who killed her fianc, Emmett Washington (Jeff Pierre). What makes matters even worse is that, in exchange for his cooperation, Dennis will be granted early release.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 2 “When the Boeing Gets Tough…”] As showrunner Tim Minear told us, “Bobby’s always [Athena’s] lifeline. She’s always his lifeline.” That is crystal clear in the latest 9-1-1 episode, following the bee-nado causing a smaller plane to collide with the one Athena’s (Angela Bassett) on—while Bobby (Peter Krause) is stuck on the TV show set as tech advisor (get him back to the 118 Asap!) with his phone off! The episode follows the same pattern 9-1-1 has in the past: It goes back to before the incident, introducing the soon-to-be victims. The passengers include, alongside Athena and her fiancé’s killer Dennis Jenkins (Glenn Plummer), an elderly couple, a woman with her dog, and a high school sports team. Leading up to Athena going to speak to the captain (as seen at the end of the premiere), Dennis tells her he’s only going ...

9-1-1, ABC's popular show about first responders, began its 8th season on September 26, 2024 with "Buzzkill." Just its second season on ABC, after airing on Fox for six seasons before the show was canceled due to finances and picked up by ABC, 9-1-1 kicked off Season 8 with a bang. Athena Grant-Nash (Angela Bassett) faced a problem from her past in "Buzzkill" when the Assistant U.S. Attorney's office showed up to ask her to escort a prisoner from Phoenix to Los Angeles so he could testify against a pretty heinous sex trafficker and rapist.
The trouble is, the prisoner is Dennis Jenkins, the man who killed Athena's fianc, Emmett, back in 1991. Athena is furious that Jenkins has made a deal with the federal government, but when she learns that Jenkins asked for her specifically, she decides to honor the request and heads to Phoenix, a decision which ultimately puts her in danger -- again.

“9-1-1” has cultivated a reputation for kicking off seasons with some impressive disasters. There was Season 2’s earthquake, Season 5’s LA blackout and Season 7’s sinking cruise ship. And who could ever forget the three-episode tsunami that opened Season 3? But Season 8’s Bee-nado may just fly to the top of this wild list.
“I was talking to Ryan Murphy, and he really loved the whole riff on ‘The Poseidon Adventure’ last season. Minear does not recommend “anyone” sit down and watch Irwin Allen’s box office bomb about a swarm of killer bees that are on the verge of invading Texas. “I threw that out there,...

While his work might not enjoy the iconic status of the Columbia Pictures classics that formed a key part of the retrospective programming at the 72nd Locarno Film Festival, Samuel Fuller is a director who’s nevertheless had a significant influence on the kind of independent cinema that the event seeks to champion. However, a screening of Fuller’s penultimate feature, Street of No Return, which formed part of this year’s Histoires de Cinema section at Locarno, couldn’t help but seem like an outlier in today’s film landscape.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that there are only two viable career options for retired boxers: selling plastic kitchen crap in infomercials, and drinking yourself into a lonely death of despair until you get talked into training a smart-ass young fighter and rediscover your thirst for life. If anyone is on the fence about which path to choose after hanging up their gloves, Vincent Grashaw’s “Bang Bang” provides a good illustration of both paths.

Finding newfound popularity on Netflix with a new, L.A.-based spin-off set to begin filming next month, Aaron Korsh's Suits is a legal drama series that gets your emotions oscillating at both ends of the pendulum: love or hate, happiness or sadness, pain or pleasure. There are no in-betweens. You love it when Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) closes the most defiant of clients or wins the most challenging of battles. You feel for Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman), even if you hate him most of the time, when he opens up to Harvey about how getting mugged made him a mess. The show makes you want to hug Jessica (Gina Torres) and Rachel (Meghan Markle) too, on behalf of Leonard (Glenn Plummer), when the duo helped him prove his innocence and get him free from a crime he didn't commit, and reconnect with his daughter. Suits is a show of highs and lows,...

The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.

Tim Blake Nelson is ready to put his dukes up for Bang Bang, an upcoming boxing drama from director Vincent Grashaw. Written by Will Janowitz (The Sopranos), the story focuses on Bernard “Bang Bang” Rozyski (Nelson), a disgruntled, retired boxer in charge of caring for his grandson. While making ends meet, Bernard encounters a chance to settle an old grudge, but he’ll need to show his kin around the ropes to come out swinging like a butterfly and stinging like a bee.
Joining Nelson for Grashaw’s hard-hitting drama are Glenn Plummer, Andrew Liner, Erica Gimple, Nina Arianda, Daniella Pineda, and Kevin Corrigan.
“This project hits the most personal to me. I grew up loving the sport of boxing, but the script tackled elements I hadn’t seen before in a movie; the aftermath of a troubled fighter’s career,” said Grashaw. “I found it an incredibly moving, tragic story,...

Exclusive: Matthew Modine has thrown his hat into the ring as a candidate for president of SAG-AFTRA. Modine, a member of the union’s local and national boards of directors, is running at the top of the Membership First ticket, the self-styled progressive wing of the union that promises more democracy and transparency — which the union’s loyal opposition says is in short supply. He seeks to unseat Gabrielle Carteris, who’s been president of the union since 2016.

Marc Webb goes from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to Gifted, starring Chris Evans. Here's our review...
When the moment comes for Chris Evans to put down Captain America's shield, we'll be sorry to see the back of one of the best big screen superhero portrayals ever. But Marvel's loss will be cinema's gain, going by the interesting projects he's chosen between his more red, white and blue escapades. In Gifted, he's put whatever blockbuster clout he may have behind a project that deserves it, and the result is one of the year's nicest surprises.
Evans plays Frank Adler, a boat mechanic who lives in Florida with his seven-year-old niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) and a one-eyed rescue cat called Fred. Mary is a child prodigy who immediately captures the attention of her first-grade teacher Bonnie (Jenny Slate) with her advanced grasp of maths.

"You're out there on stage, hoping on a spot, someone gets in your way - step on 'em." Pathe is planning a 4K restoration re-release of the cult classic, critically-panned film from Paul Verhoeven that killed his career in Hollywood - Showgirls. To announce the upcoming re-release in theaters as well as on Blu-ray and VOD, they've unveiled a new trailer for the film which starred Elizabeth Berkley, Kyle Maclachlan, Gina Gershon, Glenn Plummer and Robert Davi. Showgirls actually received the "Nc-17" rating for "nudity and erotic sexuality throughout", perhaps because Verhoeven was given final cut after the success of Basic Instinct and didn't hold back, and it bombed at the box office. This trailer is obviously Nsfw with nudity throughout, but that should be expected. Perhaps there are a few devoted Verhoeven fans out there. Here's the new restored re-release trailer for Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls, direct from Pathe's YouTube: Nomi,...

Simply put, cult classics aren’t made, they’re born. They’re not designed with the intention of becoming hits on the home video or midnight movie markets, they just exist as sincere creative expressions that happen to catch on with audiences and critics after in its initial theatrical run. Case in point: In 1995, director Paul Verhoeven released his erotic drama “Showgirls,” starring Elizabeth Berkeley as a street-smart hitchhikers who heads to Las Vegas to climb the ropes from stripper to showgirl. While she’s there, she’s introduced to the seedy underbelly of the dancing world and comes face to face with marginalization, violence, and exploitation. The film also stars Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks”), Gina Gershon (“Bound”), Glenn Plummer (“Speed”), Robert Davi (“Die Hard”), and more.

While you’ll have to wait seven extra months to see John Boyega back in the Star Wars universe as Rian Johnson‘s Episode VIII has been delayed to December 15th, 2017, you’ll definitely see him on screen before than. One of our most-anticipated films of the year, The Circle, is expected to arrive this fall, and he also has a hold-over from 2014’s Sundance Film Festival that’s now looking for distribution in a post-Episode VII world.
Imperial Dreams is “based on a young troubled writer who has to struggle in the imperial courts projects while single handedly raising his son,” Boyega said on Instagram. “This is an important story, I’m glad it’s being told and I’m really excited for you guys to see this.” Directed by Malik Vitthal, the first trailer has now landed today and it looks like a strong drama, with distribution hopefully to follow.

Director Paul Verhoeven makes no qualms about it. Showgirls destroyed Elizabeth Berkley's acting career. And it's something he deeply regrets. But that hasn't stopped him from daydreaming about a sequel, appropriately called 'Bimbos'. But will it ever happen? And will it be bold enough to feature Charlize Theron, who was originally up for the lead but lost due to being an 'unknown' at the time? The New York Daily News recently caught up with Paul Verhoeven to talk about the film's failures and its history as one of the biggest box office bombs of all time.

And it's one of the few major releases to have ever secured a Nc-17 rating since the MPAA established the No Children under 17 ruling in 1990, replacing the X rating.
