Netflix Acquires Sundance Award-Winning Doc ‘The Perfect Neighbor’
Image
“The Perfect Neighbor” has found a home.

The film, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it won the directing prize in the U.S. Documentary competition, has been acquired by Netflix. A sum for the acquisition has not been disclosed but earlier reports from February had the number around $5 million. The streaming giant is planning a release for later this year.

The Geeta Gandbhir-directed film uses police bodycam, investigative interviews and dashcam footage to tell the chilling story of Susan Lorincz, who in 2023 fired a gun through her locked door, killing her Black neighbor, Ajike “Aj” Owens. Lorincz used self-defense and Florida’s “stand your ground” laws as an excuse. The official Sundance synopsis described “The Perfect Neighbor” as “a remarkable exploration of one horrific event that has profound implications for the challenge of living in community with the monsters who might live next door.

Netflix Finalizes Acquisition Of Sundance Prize Winner ‘The Perfect Neighbor’, Plans 2025 Release
Image
Updated to note that Cinetic brokered the deal. Exclusive: It’s official. After weeks of indications that it would acquire The Perfect Neighbor, Netflix has finalized a deal for the film which won the directing award for U.S. Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival.

The streamer is planning a release later this year for the documentary directed by Geeta Gandbhir, putting it in position to become a strong Oscar contender. Terms of the deal were not announced, but some earlier reports pegged the acquisition figure in the range of $5 million.

Through the use of police bodycam and dashcam footage, the documentary tells a heinous story from Central Florida. In 2023, Susan Lorincz, a white woman, fired a gun through her locked door, killing her Black neighbor, Ajike “Aj” Owens. Lorincz invoked Florida’s notorious “stand your ground” laws, claiming she feared for her life after Owens banged on her door...

Picture: Showrunner Alisa Payne

The series is focused on the impact of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans, which, thanks to government neglect, left the city defenseless against a storm of such magnitude. Spike Lee Series About Hurricane Katrina Among Docs Planned For Netflix In 2025
Image
Spike Lee’s next joint for Netflix is called Katrina: Come Hell and High Water — one of three documentaries planned for the streamer in 2025.

Lee’s doc with Message Pictures will revisit the hurricane that caused 1,392 fatalities and more than $100 billion in damages in 2005. The official logline for the doc set to drop in August says the “hurricane turned cataclysmic through human error and neglect. Over the course of a gripping and emotional three episodes, the people of New Orleans recount their past, extoll their present and lean into the future of what they and their beloved city survived and have become 20 years later. The series sets the stage for a tragedy — whose man-made elements expose the systemic governmental neglect that led to the city being defenseless in the face of the storm — and Katrina’s devastating impact that changed New Orleans irreparably. Detailed, harrowing and triumphant first-person accounts and...

‘The Perfect Neighbor’ Review: A Devastating Doc Observes the Chilling Consequences of Stand-Your-Ground Laws
Image
There’s a scene in Geeta Gandbhir’s harrowing documentary The Perfect Neighbor, in which a Marion County police officer asks Susan Lorincz, a white Floridian, if she has ever called her Black neighbor’s children “the n-word.” Lorincz seems confused by the question and immediately denies it. But she eventually concedes, acknowledging that maybe the word had “slipped out.” She claims she was taught to use the word when referring to people who were being “unlawful, dirty and generally unpleasant.”

That moment is instructive for a couple of reasons: It reveals how Lorincz, one of the principal subjects of Gandbhir’s documentary, thinks; and it clarifies why Stand Your Ground laws are dangerous in a country plagued by racism.

The earliest version of this legislation, which allows a citizen to use force (even lethal) if they perceive the threat of harm, was passed in Utah in 1994. Florida followed suit 11 years later,...

Exclusive: A multi-part film about the Fleischer Brothers, creators of a pioneering animation studio that launched Betty Boop, Popeye The Sailor, and Superman cartoons, has won the richest prize in documentary.

Today, the Library of Congress, The Better Angels Society, Ken Burns, and the Crimson Lion/Lavine Family Foundation today announced Cartooning America as the winner of the sixth annual Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film. The $200,000 award will go to director Asaf Galay.

“Most people have never heard the names Max and Dave Fleischer, but their legacy on American animation is profound, having preceded – and also inspired – Walt and Roy Disney,” notes a release about the prize. “Unlike the polished characters produced by the Disney studio, the Fleischer characters came right off the streets of New York City: the subtly Jewish Betty Boop, the muttering, street-smart Popeye, and Superman, the first-ever superhero cartoon. The Best Films Playing in New York and Los Angeles Repertory Theaters During June 2024
Image
In the wake of a slow return to production post WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, industry contraction, and an extended M&a deal for a major studio that has kept the whole town on pins and needles, Hollywood really needs a break. Creatives and executives alike were hoping for a boost in the form of a strong summer box office, but after almost every blockbuster released in the last month failed to meet expectations, a panic that’s been in place for a while now refuses to relent. As the traditional process of producing and distributing film and television hurdles towards oblivion, the best thing one can do is take a step back and gain some perspective. Ironically enough, I believe the best place to do this is actually… at a movie theater. Just not the kind you’re probably thinking of.

While first-run mega-chains like AMC and Regal struggle through the...

How Jimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi Moved from Movies like ‘Free Solo’ and ‘Nyad’ to Non-Fiction Series ‘Photographer’
Image
Oscar-winning director-producers Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth (Chai) Vasarhelyi consistently deliver stunning visuals and compelling documentary content. And following such breakout films as “Meru,” Oscar- and Emmy-winning “Free Solo,” Emmy-winning “The Rescue,” and “Wild Life,” which took advantage of pro climber-cinematographer-NatGeo photographer Chin’s 20 years of athletic cinema and Vasarhelyi’s relentless producer drive for perfection, they moved into feature directing with long-distance swimming drama “Nyad,” which scored Oscar nominations for stars Annette Bening and Jodie Foster.

Over the years, the filmmakers have established their filmmaking prowess, combining immersive cinema verité visuals with deeply felt personal drama. That is on full display in their latest collaboration with NatGeo, the series “Photographer,” for which the duo matched six of the world’s most renowned shooters with veteran directors Marshall Curry, Kristi Jacobson, and Sam Pollard, plus Sundance alumnae Crystal Kayiza and Rita Baghdadi, and set them loose to return with bespoke...

Doc NYC Review: South to Black Power Explores Abstract Politics Through Personal Stories of Change
Sam Pollard

Smith’s South to Black Power, written by and featuring New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow, proposes a roadmap forward: a reverse great migration back to southern states with Black populations. Born and raised in the racially mixed rural town of Gibsland, Louisiana, Blow returns home to find some signs of encouraging process, discussing with relatives their plans for redeveloping their town by obtaining power through official channels.

Herein lies the problem studied extensively in the documentary: while achieving strength and agency at a municipal level is possible, Blow uses his new hometown of Atlanta as a successful case study. But...

Image
Most people don’t get a text from Bono in the middle of the night.

But Jon Kamen, the CEO, chairman and co-founder of RadicalMedia, found himself fighting off jet lag on a recent business trip to Japan as he fielded messages from the U2 frontman. That pair had worked together on the One campaign, the musician’s push to eradicate AIDS and poverty in Africa, and this time Bono needed help launching ticketing for the band’s upcoming residency at Las Vegas’ newly launched venue, the Sphere. Kamen assured him that there was someone on staff who could help him.

“I said, ‘let me call this guy and see if he can come up with something,'” he remembers. “We needed to turn this thing around in ridiculous time. I go to bed in Japan. Bono gives me a good recommendation for a restaurant in Kyoto. I’m dreaming of sushi,...

A League of His Own: Sam Pollard on The League

Admittedly, as a white, baseball-phobic critic (I’ve never seen A League of Their Own or anything starring Kevin Costner and a bat), I’m not exactly the target demographic for The League, which takes a deep dive into America’s pastime through the parallel sports universe of the Negro League. Nevertheless, the doc was a must-catch, no pun intended, for me during Tribeca since I also happen to have a baseball-obsessed (Bronx-born/Brooklyn Dodgers-raised) father and (Mets-maniacal) sister who visited the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum several years back, and still speak of that trip as some sort of exotic holy pilgrimage.
