- He and twin brother Mark Polonia began making low-budget horror films as teenagers, continuing into the 1990s. They produced, wrote, directed, edited and often acted in over 20 horror movies. Their first film was the 1987 movie Splatter Farm (1987). While their work lacked almost any budget whatsoever, the pair continued to work and mentor others because of their love of the movies. They worked up until John's sudden death at age 39, in 2008.
- At a surprise birthday party for Mark and John Polonia, the brothers were "awarded" a special Independent Film Lifetime Achievement Award by frequent collaborator Brice Kennedy as a token of respect and gratitude (2004).
