Sudden Death
Image
A homicidal hockey mascot. A firefighter-turned-fire marshal-turned-Stanley Cup Finals goalie. Lethal gym equipment. A magnificent helicopter escape plan. Lots and lots of roundhouse kicks. All of these elements and more make Sudden Death, released on this date in 1995, the most glorious action extravaganza of superstar Jean-Claude Van Damme’s career.

Essentially Die Hard At A Hockey Game, Sudden Death tells the tale of divorced former firefighter Darren McCord (Jcvd), who, after a workplace tragedy, has become a fire marshal at Pittsburgh Civic Arena. For his young son Tyler (Ross Malinger)’s birthday, Darren is bringing Tyler and daughter Emily (Whittni Wright) to the office. The occasion? Game 7 of the 1995 Stanley Cup Finals, an imagined rematch of the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals bout between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Vice President Daniel Binder (Raymond J. Barry) is in attendance with a prestigious entourage in a skybox.

Of course, it wouldn...

‘Welcome to Sudden Death’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Michael Jai White, Michael Eklund, Sabryn Rock, Nakai Takawira, Lyric Justice, Sagine Sémajuste, Gary Owen, Anthony Grant, Kristen Harris, Marrese Crump | Written by Dallas Jackson, Gene Quintano | Directed by Dallas Jackson

It started last year, with the release of Benchwarmers 2… Which is when I speculated that Universal’s Dtv arm Universal 1440 Entertainment were scraping the bottom of the barrel. How little did I know. After being set up to produce sequels to Universal’s properties such as Death Race, Tremors and The Scorpion King, the company has in recent years has churned out sequels to Kindergarten Cop, Daddy Day Care, Cop and a Half, Honey, Bring it On and unexpected sequels to the likes of Backdraft, Bulletproof and Undercover Brother.

Speaking of which, Michael Jai White – who starred in the aforementioned blaxploitation comedy film – is back working with Universal’s Dtv arm for Welcome to Sudden Death. A...

March 31st Blu-ray & DVD Releases Include Interstellar, The Dario Argento Collection
The month of March is quietly coming to a close in terms of home entertainment choices as there are only just a handful of genre-related titles making their way to Blu-ray and DVD this week. Paramount is releasing Christopher Nolan’s latest sci-fi epic, Interstellar, onto all formats, Blue Underground is bringing two separate collections of cult classics from both Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci to high definition, and Olive Films has dug up a few overlooked gems to release on March 31st as well.

Allan Quatermain & The Lost City of Gold (Olive Films, Blu-ray & DVD)

Richard Chamberlain and Sharon Stone are back for more exciting adventures in the action packed Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold. Allan (Richard Chamberlain, Shogun) and Jesse Huston (Sharon Stone, Basic Instinct) are newly engaged and preparing to leave for America where they’ll be married. Or so they think.

Over/Under: Airplane! vs. National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1
The concept of satire has been around for a really long time. I’m sure it goes back to some famous Roman or something. But the modern spoof movie as we’ve come to understand it has much more recent roots. Now, by spoof I’m not talking about satire in general, something that comments on familiar tropes, I’m talking about one movie that makes direct references to other, very famous movies. A lot of people trace these things back to the 1980 release Airplane!, a movie that’s still highly regarded and that launched its creators on the path to doing things like Top Secret!, The Naked Gun, and Hot Shots!; all films that are also generally well-regarded among fans of comedies. One spoof that isn’t so fondly remembered is the 1993 film National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1. Its star, Emilio Estevez, got so much crap for starring in what was viewed as a lesser...

Bruce Willis is Starring in Russell Mulcahy's Grimm?
So wait, Bruce Willis is starring in a new movie from the guy who directed Resident Evil: Extinction - Russell Mulcahy? Say it ain't so! Our friends at ShockTillYouDrop have debuted the first teaser poster from a project called Grimm, a horror film set in a small Massachusetts town. This is the first we've ever heard about this, and I'm quite shocked to see that they've already lined up Bruce Willis, but that's what the poster says. The story follows a cop who attempts to uncover the truth behind a series of kidnappings and the strange occurrences surrounding them in the town. Newcomer Gene Quintano wrote the script. The film starts when teenager Katie O'Sullivan goes over to babysit. She encounters "ghostly" twins Henry and Grace and a terrifying apparition that drags her off towards a sinister tower. "She is never seen again." And that's when Willis moves into town.
