Exclusive: British-Iranian screenwriter Juliette Towhidi is attached to pen the untitled feature film project about Farah Pahlavi, Empress of Iran, wife of the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
As Deadline announced last summer, a newly formed collaboration with Women of the Movement producers Serendipity Group and John Powers Middleton, an official documentary and film project, was in the works. The doc began production in Washington, D.C., and continued through the end of 2024. Work is set to resume this month. Emily Atef is set as the film’s director.
The film will explore the life of Shahbanou Farah Pahlavi, focusing on the resilience of a woman who, despite an exile lasting more than 45 years and mourning the loss of her husband and two children, remains deeply devoted to her duty as a sovereign and attached to her homeland. She never remarried or gave up her Iranian identity.

I was lucky to attend SXSW in Austin, Texas this year. It marked my first time attending what’s quickly leapfrogged up the list of important festivals. It used to be that Cannes, TIFF, and Sundance were the major ones, but it can’t be denied that as the indie film scene has changed, the kinds of movies connecting with audiences just aren’t what they used to be. SXSW strikes an interesting balance between indie films and mainstream studio fare, albeit of a somewhat more elevated pedigree. It’s led to some high-profile premieres for the festival recently, including Air, Everything Everywhere All At Once and more.
This year, we got the premiere of the long-awaited The Accountant 2 (winner of the SXSW audience award), the latest Blumhouse thriller, Drop, plus the anticipated sequel, Another Simple Favor. So what were the best movies we saw? Here’s our list!

Minimalist, two-hander, nearly single-location horror-thrillers that unfold in real time can — and should — take any number of formal and narrative liberties, but it’s crucial that they use them to take us all the way to the place they have in mind. The latest film by British-Iranian director Babak Anvari (“Under the Shadow”) only gets us halfway before it gets lost in a fog of its own elevated ideas.
The story of two out-of-sync parents flying down a nighttime motorway to save their daughter after she’s crashed into a girl while driving through an eerie forest, “Hallow Road” makes for a highly tense watch that will have audiences flocking to the nearest dive bar or social media platform to map out easter eggs and froth over grand semiotics. Unfortunately, the film never transcends its tone of ever-present and palpable danger to become a more satisfying character piece.

Under the Shadowfilmmaker Babak Anvari returns to South by Southwest this year with an atypical one-location thriller. Hallow Road is every parent's nightmare, but its approach is uncommon. Actors Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys generate tension through a telephone conversation, playing a panicked mother and father who spend 80 minutes speeding toward their destination. It's an exercise in fearing what's not shown taken to the extreme, with fairy tale elements sprinkled in for our imaginations to extrapolate. The question is, does Anvari successfully sustain nerve-shredding edginess via dialogue—does the sure-to-be-divisive experiment work?...

A tragic accident, a terrified teenage girl, a pair of panicked parents, and a long lonely road in the woods feature in Iranian-British director Babak Anvari’s latest chiller, Hallow Road, premiering as part of this year’s SXSW Film & TV Festival. When Alice (voiced by Mega McDonnell) disappears into the night after a fight with her parents, played by Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys, they are perturbed but relatively calm. However, when Alice calls and tells them that she’s been in an accident where a young girl is severely wounded, her parents spring into action, driving off in Mum’s rickety Land Rover to help. Alice is deep in the Ashfolk national forest, a place they used to vacation when she was a child, but not...

One of last year's most critically acclaimed and financially successful horror movie was A Quiet Place: Day One, starring Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn. A follow-up to the 2020 film A Quiet Place Part II, Day One grossed over $261 million on a $67 million budget, particularly impressive because it is the first film in the franchise not to feature the Abbott family.
But you'd be mistaken if you thought the prequel film was the stand-in for a third movie in the franchise started by the 2018 film directed by John Krasinski. A Quiet Place Part III is still happening, as made clear by franchise producer Brad Fuller.
Speaking to The Direct during the recent South by Southwest film festival (SXSW), Fuller clarified that "Day One is not A Quiet Place 3, just to be clear," adding that work on third movie in the main trilogy was in active development.

British Iranian director Babak Anvari’s best film since his sensational 2016 debut feature Under the Shadow is about as lean and mean as they come. For most of its run time, Hallow Road unfolds in a car, as anxious parents respond to a distressed call from their college-age daughter, speeding through the night to get to her in time to help. Essentially a two-hander, the movie might have been merely a minimalist exercise — albeit an impressive one — in mounting dread. But high-intensity performances from Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys elevate the suspenseful thriller, its psychological grounding gradually expanding into a darker mythic realm.
The setup, in William Gillies’ taut debut screenplay, is brisk and economical. As Dp Kit Fraser’s camera slowly prowls around a house, we see an uneaten dinner on the table and broken glass on the floor, suggesting an argument that cut short family mealtime. Maddie (Pike...

Set almost entirely during an urgent car ride, Babak Anvari’s “Hallow Road” begins as an intensely performed, deftly minimalist family thriller about two parents driving to the scene of their daughter’s accident while keeping her on the phone. That’s all you need to know going in, and all you should really learn beforehand, given how this race-against-the-clock premise unfolds, before swerving in completely unpredictable ways.
Few films have ever induced such immense tonal whiplash while exhibiting such tight formal control over their transformations. There’s a very clear boundary separating the kind of movie “Hallow Road” starts out as from what it eventually becomes, which all but cements its place as a fascinating artifact of this year’s midnight movie scene. Some might say it jumps the shark in order to achieve this distinction, but as Donald Glover’s character once naively noted on “Community,” “There was...

With the horror genre, sometimes less is more. Tension and emotion can carry a film through a lot of weaknesses. Julia Max’s The Surrender coasts on strong performances and direction to overcome the shortcomings of an occasionally shallow and generic script, making it a great entry in the canon of recent indie horror.
The Surrender Review
The movie follows a woman and her mother grieving after the death of the family’s patriarch as they consult a mysterious stranger who makes a unique promise: to bring their recently departed loved one back from the dead. Séancé horror films like this are easy to mess up because they can often border on goofy, but for the most part, Julia Max’s directorial debut manages to achieve a tone that feels genuinely sinister and also very effectively sad.

Director Babak Anvari's "Hallow Road" premiered at the SXSW festival Friday night in Austin, to an awestruck crowd. The tight 80-minute film is an acting tour de force from both Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys as parents Maddie and Frank, who get a late-night phone call from their troubled college-aged daughter (Megan McDonnell). She's been in a car accident. She's hit a pedestrian in an isolated road that's at least a forty-minute drive away, so Maddie and Frank rush over in their car to come get her and try to talk her through the situation.
Almost the entire movie takes place in that one car. We only hear their daughter's voice through the phone, and the audience is forced to imagine her situation as she explains it. This approach had a clear financial benefit — filming only took about 17 days, as Avari mentioned in the Q&a afterwards — but the...

Sometimes, simple is all you need — especially in the horror genre. Hallow Road, the latest film from director Babak Anvari, is the type of psychological thriller that hooks you in at the beginning and never lets up thanks to two excellent performances and a strong command of its atmosphere.
Hallow Road Review
Hallow Road follows two parents who receive a distressing late-night phone call: their daughter has been in a car accident in the middle of the woods, and she thinks she has killed someone. It’s a high-concept, lean thriller — and one that’s only 80 minutes, at that — that takes advantage of its cast and tension to deliver an effective chiller.
RelatedTogether Sundance Review — Dave Franco and Alison Brie are Unforgettable in Hilarious and Scary Body Horror
The biggest weakness of Hallow Road is that it falls back on overly expositional dialogue. Granted, that’s just the nature of the movie’s structure.

Plot: Two parents (Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys) receive a panicked phone call from their college-age daughter, who’s just hit and killed someone while intoxicated on a remote road. The two rush to her while grappling with the decision about how to handle a situation that will likely land her in prison and ruin her life.
Review: How far would you go to protect your children? That’s the question Babak Anvari’s (Under the Shadow) Hallow Road asks. While it’s a familiar one, what makes Hallow Road unique is that the parents in this movie aren’t necessarily racing to save their children from an external force but rather from a deadly calamity of their own making.

Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys star as distraught parents faced with an unthinkable tragedy that leads to an intense moral conundrum in director Babak Anvari’s Hallow Road. The filmmaker’s minimalist approach serves a dual purpose here, palpably capturing the psychological intensity of its nightmarish scenario and weighty questions while honoring and modernizing the ancient oral traditions tied to its specific brand of horror.
Hallow Road opens with a camera tracking through a quiet, seemingly empty house, showing alarming signs of a blow-out brawl. A dinner left abandoned on the dining room table, barely untouched. There’s no question that SXSW has outdone itself this year in terms of genre programming. The festival is kicking off its 31st year this Thursday in Austin, Texas, unleashing a dizzying slate of premieres and events, with a surprising emphasis on horror, sci-fi, and thrillers.
SXSW 2025 has filled its Headliner section, a programming track dedicated to the biggest gala film events and premieres with star power, with highly anticipated genre titles that include Flying Lotus‘s sci-fi horror movie Ash, Christopher Landon‘s ode to Brian De Palma in upcoming thriller Drop, and A24’s nightmare comedy Death of a Unicorn. But there’s so much more to discover beyond the big red carpet premieres. Not even the Midnighter category, which is dedicated to genre film, can contain the sheer volume of offerings.

Few actors are more synonymous with 2010s television than Matthew Rhys. The Welsh actor has been performing in theater and television since the mid-'90s, appearing in numerous shows as a guest star. His breakthrough came in 2006 with the role of Kevin Walker in the ABC family drama Brothers & Sisters, starring Oscar winner Sally Field. From there, Rhys' profile increased, eventually earning an Emmy and a Critics Choice Award for his performance as Russian spy Phillips Jennings in FX's The Americans.

A tangled web of jealousy, deceit and dysfunction drives the trailer for BritBox’s Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero detective drama, which dropped on Friday.
Angelica Huston stars as Lady Tressilian who hosts her favorite nephew, British tennis star Nevile Strange (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and his new wife Kay (Mimi Keene) and ex-wife Audrey (Ella Lily Hyland) in an aristocratic estate.
“You’ll not make a mockery of marriage under my roof,” Lady Tressilian warns Strange and his new wife as their nasty love triangle threatens to upend her summer house party. Of course being an Agatha Christie yarn set in England 1936, that disreputable unfinished business between the former sweethearts is followed by a violent death.
And that has Inspector Leach, played by Matthew Rhys, soon on the scene to ferret out a murderer from a colorful collection of suspects: a long-suffering lady’s companion, a mysterious gentleman’s valet, an exiled cousin with a grudge,...

Whether you watched it or not, every teenager from the 1990s remembers the teen drama series My So-Called Life. Created by Winnie Holzman and starring Claire Danes, the cult favorite drama explored the tribulations of being a teenager and dealing with friends, guys, parents, school, and any unpredictable thing life could throw at you. My So-Called Life helped define a generation, and now Holzman and Danes are reteaming for The Applebaum Curse, a new drama coming to HBO.
In early development, The Applebaum Curse finds Winnie Holzman writing the script and serving as the project’s showrunner. Claire Danes is set to star and joins Holzman as an executive producer. According to HBO, The Applebaum Curse revolves around a dysfunctional family, with Danes in the lead role.
The impact of My So-Called Life cannot be understated, which is why it is baffling that the show only lasted for one season before being canceled.

This week marks the 50th anniversary celebration of Saturday Night Live (or SNL as it is more colloquially known). In its half-century of running, SNL has become a comedic institution unmatched in television history. Conceived by Lorne Michaels, the visionary who still helms the show to this day, SNL follows an iconic structure that consists of a celebrity host (and monologue),a musical guest, sketches performed by a principal cast, a weekend update news segment, and, always, the declaration of the iconic, "live from New York it's Saturday Night."
A vast number of industry legends have gotten their start on SNL, including the likes of Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Adam Sandler, Tina Fey, and Mike Myers. However, few people know the truth behind SNL's chaotic origins in 1975, or how close the beloved show was to failing to exist at all. Luckily, this is the...

Scott Derrickson's newest film, The Gorge, has climbed to the top of the streaming charts on Apple TV+ just a day after it was released on the service. The Apple original film, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller, had an impressive debut and is a prime example of how Apple's original programming manages to stay relevant and stand out in a crowded library on streaming services and countless original films and series. Released on February 15, The Gorge attracted attention thanks to its two leads, well-known director, interesting premise, and blend of genres.
Set in a dystopian world, The Gorge follows Levi (Teller) and Drasa (Taylor-Joy), two snipers who keep watch over a gorge separating their two watchtowers. Both are unsure of what exactly they are protecting their two nations from, as they soon grow closer despite the distance from each other. Eventually, their growing relationship causes the truth...

Matthew Rhys is moving to New England and becoming a mayor — on television, of course. The Perry Masonand The Americans star is set to lead AppleTV+'s new, supernatural series Widow's Bay, from accomplished and prolific writer Katie Dippold, who's penned such films as The Heat and Ghostbusters, and also wrote 31 episodes of the iconic sitcom Parks and Recreation. Also involved in the stellar team? Director Hiro Murai, whom many know from his breathtaking work on Atlanta, Station Eleven, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Anyone else allowing themselves to get a little bit excited about this one?
According to Deadline, the new series has a decidedly supernatural bent — appropriate given Dippold's last feature script was Disney's The Haunted Mansion. The show takes place on a mysterious and perhaps cursed New England island with aspirations of Nantucket-level tourism grandeur. However, its superstitious citizens — led by a mayor (Rhys) who doesn't exactly...
