In 2011 Spain, the film invites us into a world where familial bonds morph into a potent, almost spectral union. The narrative focuses on a mother and her son, bound by a devotion that teeters between tenderness and a form of possessive sorrow.
This intricate relationship mirrors the silent agony captured by Michelangelo’s celebrated sculpture—a visual prayer of loss and love reinterpreted in a distorted familial context.
The atmosphere is charged with surreal imagery and a disquieting humor that shimmers on the edge of the macabre. The film crafts its reality through striking contrasts: everyday scenes imbued with an otherworldly pallor, where the mundane transforms into an eerie stage for emotional extremities.
An overt theatricality permeates each frame, inviting us to witness a dynamic where nurturing evolves into a spectral, almost ritualistic clinging. The director casts a probing eye on a bond that seems to constrict identity while clinging to the remnants of life.

In recent years, after multiple setbacks stemming from makers taking audiences for granted, Marvel Studios has doubled down on the nostalgia pandering in major ways, be it through crossovers, cameos, or revamping beloved classics. The studio’s recent attempt to celebrate the integration of mutants as mainstay characters of the MCU through X-Men’97, a continuation of fan favorite X-Men: The Animated Series, is another such attempt, but one that exudes novelty, heart, and enough care to make the transition between the original and sequel series appear seamless.
As the premiere team of the Marvel universe, the X-Men and Mutants saga arguably command the most important section of the franchise’s storytelling potential, as time and again, the representation of the marginalized, repressed section of humankind has been reflected through their stories in vivid ways. Pairing this with memorable characterization and interpersonal dynamics between characters, the original series was able to...

In the original "X-Men" animated series, we're introduced to Marvel's mutant characters by way of Jubilee, a teen girl who has just discovered that she has mutant powers, which puts her in danger of being pursued by the dangerous Sentinels under the Mutant Registration Act. Rescued by the X-Men, Jubilee becomes a young new recruit on the team, and she acts as a proxy for the audience to be introduced to the world of Professor Charles Xavier and his School for the Gifted.
However, when "X-Men: The Animated Series" came to an end with the fifth season, Jubilee had become a full-fledged member of the team. Her wardrobe even changed to reflect that she'd grown up a bit, and the episode "Jubilee's Fairytale Theater" affirmed that the rest of the X-Men viewed her as an equally formidable mutant. Thankfully, "X-Men '97" provides a similar entry point for new viewers...

If you are a millennial of a certain age, there’s a good chance Disney+’s X-Men ’97 will evoke nostalgic chills almost without trying: The theme song alone, borrowed from the original X-Men: The Animated Series, will be enough to transport some of us, Ratatouille-style, into memories of Saturday mornings bingeing cartoons over sugar cereal.
But as demonstrated by one failed remake or middling reboot after another, getting people to remember they used to like a show is one thing. Getting those people to fall in love with it again, and recruit new fans along the way, is entirely another. It is, then, a testament to the precision of X-Men ’97‘s balancing act that it actually pulls it off. The animated series is a throwback in the most ideal sense — so vintage, it comes all the way back around to feeling fresh again.

One of our festival highlights earlier this year, Lila Avilés’ Tótem is now preparing for a U.S. release to kick off 2024 following an awards-qualifying. Mexico’s Oscar entry marks the director’s follow-up to The Chambermaid and follows a family over the course of a single, meaningful day, mainly from the perspective of 7-year-old Sol (Naíma Sentíes), as her mother (Montserrat Marañón) and extended relatives prepare for the birthday party of the girl’s father (Mateo Garcia). Ahead of a January 26, 2024 release for the Berlinale and Nd/Nf selection from Sideshow and Janus Films, the first U.S. trailer has now arrived.
Rory O’Connor said in his review, “The characters of Tótem don’t just appear onscreen; they take it over. From the top there’s the patriarch Roberto (Alberto Amador), who speaks using an electrolarynx and, when not dryly cajoling his flock, enjoys pruning a handsome Bonsai. There...

Riverdale's finale revealed a surprising romantic twist during the show's final moments. Riverdale's series finale ends with the four main characters together for a time, showcasing their bond instead of favoring one relationship. The decision to have Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica end up together in a polyamorous relationship is seen as a mature choice that breaks away from the expected narrative. The finale highlights the fleeting nature of high school and the meaningful but transient bonds formed during that time, while also acknowledging the nostalgia and regret that come with growing older.
Riverdale executive producer Sarah Schechter explains why the series finale ends with the four main characters all ending up together rather than just highlighting one relationship. Part of what fueled the long-running CW show, in addition to its outlandish twists and ability to fold in different genres, was the dynamic between Archie (Kj Apa), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Betty (Lili Reinhart), and Jughead (Cole Sprouse). For its series finale, which...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the series finale of The CW’s Riverdale.
Goodbye, Riverdale.
After seven seasons that included multiple serial killers, at least one human sacrifice, lots of drug trafficking, an organ harvesting cult, a parallel universe, and time travel in the name of saving the town from an impending comet…the eclectic series has come to an end.
The CW series bid farewell to its characters during a heartfelt episode on Wednesday which saw Betty (Lili Reinhart) at the end of her life. She’s just learned that Jughead (Cole Sprouse) has died, meaning she’s the last of the original crew still alive. As she expresses to her granddaughter that she’d like to visit Riverdale one last time, she’s visited by a younger version of Jughead, who offers her one last chance to spend a day in high school with her friends.
