We know, you know that we're telling the truth when we say "Psych" was one of the greatest procedural shows ever made. The USA mystery series followed the case work of private investigators Shawn Spencer and Burton "Gus" Guster.
Each week, the two man-children -- often in half-reluctant collaboration with a dysfunctional Santa Barbara Police Department -- would use their particular set of skills to bring criminals to justice, in stories that delightfully dumbed-down the overly self-serious crime procedural subgenre to make it work as wacky, irreverent, and subversive comedy.
In anticipation of a potential fourth sequel film from Peacock, we've delved back into the case files to find our favorite mysteries. No deceiving, no bending -- here are the 15 best episodes of Psych, ranked.

Popular ABC crime drama High Potential recently wrapped its first season and the finale did not disappoint. The episode ended by setting up a villain story arc for Season 2.

Due to several false leads, the wrong person ended up on their radar while the real bad guy (played by David Giuntoli) roamed free. Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Todd Harthan explained that the mystery character may be the focus in the next season. "I love a good serialized villain," he said. "I also love going into a Season 2 where there might be another surprise or two, so it’s a bit of an open box."

A series of life-and-death challenges, a glamorous (dare we say romantic) police gala, and the introduction of a possible Big Bad for next season? Oh yes, High Potential gives good finale.
The ABC procedural wrapped its first season on Tuesday by pitting the LAPD against a sadistic strategist, one whose deadly games tested Morgan’s team like never before. Poor Oz almost died at the bottom of a pool, ultimately saved by Morgan’s quick thinking and Karadec’s even-quicker swimming.

Note: This story contains spoilers from “High Potential” Season 1, Episode 13.
The “High Potential” Season 1 finale left viewers with more questions than answers, but showrunner Todd Harthan promised to address those cliffhangers at the start of Season 2.
“We have a pretty healthy plan for how we’re going to kick off the season,” Harthan told TheWrap. “I think one of the big mistakes that shows make is [saying] ‘Oh, let’s put a pin in both those cliffhangers, and we’ll get to them later,’ … you should probably satisfy one or the other so the audience doesn’t get pissed.”
After Morgan (Kaitlin Olson), Karadec (Daniel Sujata) and the rest of the LAPD spent the Season 1 finale investigating a game-obsessed criminal, the mysterious suspect showed off his game to Morgan, coming face-to-face with her before warning they’ll play again soon. Psych and Monk have several things in common, making the latter the perfect show to watch while waiting for the fourth, full-length installment in the Psych franchise. Starring James Roday as the lead character in the series, Psych has eight seasons and three sequel movies. The police procedural drama sees Shawn Spencer, a crime consultant with a unique set of skills, assist detectives solve cases.
Psych puts a unique spin on the police procedural genre with its fun characters and great comedic timing. As one of the most beloved detective shows on network television, it's not surprising that there is still a possibility that Psych 4 might happen. Although Psych is in a class of its own, there's another show that has almost the same characteristics that make James Roday’s detective series stand out.

Beloved investigative procedural comedy Psych was full of fast-paced jokes and pop culture references, so making full parody episodes was a natural next step. Psych's many parody episodes often played with genre, spoofing everything from The Wild West to Alfred Hitchcock. Of all the Psych episodes that pay homage to other shows and movies over eight seasons, Psych's best parody episode copied Jack Nicholson's crime classic, Chinatown.
Nicholson plays private detective J.J. Gittes trying to uncover a web of corruption in 1930s Los Angeles that builds to Chinatown's surprising ending. In the season 6 finale, the cast of Psych combines their unique humorous interplay with Chinatown's neo-noir tone to make Psych's best parody episode, "Santabarbaratown." A new body is connected to a decades-old unsolved murder, bringing a grittier tone to Santa Barbara while maintaining Psych's signature comedic style.

Almost 10 years after it first premiered, Psych remains one of the most beloved detective comedies, partially due to the premise behind Shawn Spencer's character and his "powers." With a unique spin on the classic police procedural, Psych has stood out with its clever references and comedic timing, even creating several Psych parody episodes based on pop-culture hits like The Shining. Psych is different from other detective shows because it introduced a niche to the procedural genre: a fake psychic solving real crimes.
With likable characters like Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and Burton "Gus" Guster (Dulé Hill), Psych has also evolved into a movie franchise. Recently, there have even been rumors that Psych 4 might finally happen. The beloved detective comedy Psych solidified itself as one of the funniest and zaniest TV shows with its witty dialogue and wacky situations, including parodies of other shows, movies, and genres. With eight seasons under its belt, Psych had a variety of incredible and highly-rated themed episodes, including, but not limited to, episodes set in the Wild West or Psych episodes that paid homage to Alfred Hitchcock's films.
Psych was brimming with meta-humor, pop culture references, and clever fourth wall breaks, but the most notable episodes were the ones that parodied iconic movies and shows. Ranging from hilarious parodies of horror tropes to shockingly gritty and dark episodes, each Psych parody episode is a wild and unique journey into Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and Burton Guster's (Dulé Hill) investigations that would help move the show away from its usual formula for a little bit.

The bad news is that ABC isn't airing a new episode of High Potential on Tuesday, November 26; the semi-good news is that the show returns in early 2025. ABC's new crime drama TV series is a surprise hit following its premiere in September 2024. After only seven episodes, High Potential has garnered quite the following and impressive ratings. Unfortunately, though, that means more people will be disappointed to learn that High Potential season 1, episode 8 won't be released during the week of Thanksgiving.

Psych might just be one of the best detective shows of all time because it is so different from other whodunnits. The series is part procedural because it does use the case-of-the-week format, but its also a comedy that found its niche in spoofing other pop culture phenomena. Many of its best episodes riffed on classics like Clue, The Shining, and even Twin Peaks.
Psych follows Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and Burton Guster (Dul Hill) as they open a psychic detective agency as a way of explaining just how Shawn manages to be one step ahead of the police on their investigations. As a psychic consultant, he doesnt have to be tied to the rules and regulations of the police force, despite being trained in them from a young age. It offers a great mix of mystery, comedy, and even found-family elements in its best episodes.

The series is a crime procedural, comparable to shows like Monk and The Mentalist in its take on the genre. In the past, crime procedurals combined quirky investigations, important relationships between the cast, and witty banter to create a fun, light-hearted series.
However, many current procedurals focus more on gritty violent crimes, and it’s challenging to balance between showing realistic cases and adding some humor.

Shawn's Psych Gus nicknames were more than just humor - they often led to trouble for Gus. Many of the nicknames were pop culture references, nods to celebrities, or tests of patience. In the Psych movies, Gus finally takes control of the nicknaming situation, leading to some hilarious moments.
On nearly every episode of Psych, Dul Hill's Burton "Gus" Guster would receive an embarrassing new nickname courtesy of his best friend and partner, Shawn Spencer (James Roday). It became almost a weekly tradition for Shawn to introduce Gus with a false - but funny - nickname that would usually earn him a frustrated look from Gus. The Psych Gus nicknames are one of the show's highlights for fans, and fans often anxiously awaited the next nickname, plus the Gus reaction after Shawn sprung it on him.

Kurt Fuller says Psych 4 is uncertain due to Peacock's financial situation, but remains hopeful for its chances. Fuller also confirms that the script is complete for the fourquel, and though he hasn't read it, he's "heard it's hilarious". Between the first three movies' success, as well as the recent acclaim the Monk movie received and NBCUniversal reviving fellow USA Network franchises Suits and White Collar, chances still seem positive for Psych 4 to happen.
With nearly three years gone since the last movie premiered, Kurt Fuller offers an uncertain update on Psych 4. Following the end of the long-running USA Network mystery comedy show, the franchise continued with a movie sequel featuring the return of its original cast, with the success leading to plans for five additional installments from creator Steve Franks. Psych recast young Shawn's actor in season 5 due to Liam James looking too mature for the role. The show's flashbacks ceased in season 6 as Shawn had evolved out of needing past life lessons from Henry. Liam James moved on to star in The Killing, while Skyler Gisondo went on to have an even bigger career.
While most actors remained constant on the series, Psych recast young Shawn's actor in season 5. In USA Network's detective-comedy series, the child version of James Roday's Shawn Spencer was played by two different actors in the first two episodes before the show ultimately settled on Liam James as its young Shawn early in season 1. Psych made TV history by remaking its own episode, "Cloudy...With a Chance of Murder" in season 8. The remake featured new actors in key roles and changed the outcome of the incriminating video scene. The show's unique approach to remaking its own episode follows its tradition of unconventional and risky moves.
In 2014, Psych became the first TV series to produce a remake of one of its own episodes. Psych followed the adventures of Shawn (James Roday Rodriguez) and Gus (Dul Hill) as the former pretended to be psychic and dragged the latter onto his jobs as a consulting psychic detective. Throughout the run of the show, the series loved to include pop culture references and homage classic media. Pineapples became a staple in Psych thanks to an improvised line by James Roday in the pilot episode. Fans loved searching for pineapples in nearly every episode of Psych, making it a recurring and fun gag. How I Met Your Mother also used pineapples as a running joke, but not as frequently as Psych.
Psych had a reputation of having a humorous obsession with pineapples, but many fans have wondered why. The tropical fruit made multiple appearances throughout the USA series, and the show's attachment to pineapples even extended to promotional photos of the cast, comic con conventions, and merchandise. Through its eight-season run, Psych made use of a number of recurring jokes and gags. These included Shaun's long list of fake nicknames for Gus (Dul Hill), references to popular movies from the 1980s, Gus' "Magic Head" moniker that originated in a season 1 episode, and many more.

It’s easy to forget sometimes that Psych is a show that often involves murder. The procedural comedy-drama is well known for its running gags, irreverent humor, and the absurd scenarios that faux psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and his best friend/crime-solving partner Gus (Dulé Hill) often found themselves in, all of which can overshadow the seriousness of the crimes they’re trying to solve. However, the series proves it’s worthy of the drama genre descriptor more often than we realize when it allows itself to go to darker places than we expect.
The most obvious example of this in the series is the Yin/Yang arc. Shawn and Gus go up against these serial killers several times throughout the series, and often find themselves and those they care about directly in harms’ way. Like many serial killers, Yin (Peter Weller...

The best television series romances are those that develop over time. Great "will-they-won’t-they" relationships like Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Ross (David Schwimmer) on Friends, Shawn (James Roday Rodriguez) and Juliet (Maggie Lawson) on Psych, or Jeff (Joel McHale) and Annie (Alison Brie) on Community would not have worked if their romances had been sorted out during the beginning of their shows’ run. Bones certainly had a good time teasing out the potential romance between its two leads, Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz). However, this may have been an example of a show waiting a little too long to confirm something that the audience largely suspected. Although Bones and Booth had to wait several seasons for their romance to be deemed “official,” the supporting characters Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin) and Jack Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) were always the more romantic couple anyway.

Andy Breckman has an exciting idea for a potential sequel to the Monk movie, but is keeping it a secret for now. The reaction to the movie has been positive, increasing the chances of another Monk installment. The success of the Psych movie sequels and USA Network's renewed interest in producing original shows may pave the way for a sequel.

Every iconic comedy show needs an iconic theme song to get casual viewers and dedicated fans excited about each episode. While comedy show intros are wonderfully appealing to watch on repeat, the music truly sells it to the viewer and properly sets the tone.
These songs are very catchy and unskippable, so people sing and dance along during the shows' openings. Sometimes, serious fans will even put the song on their music playlists. Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and The Big Bang Theory are just a few comedy shows with the best theme songs.
