John Cena didn’t have a great year at the movies in 2024. His films like Ricky Stanicky and Jackpot! were nothing more than time-killers. However, he had a couple of interesting cameo appearances, notably in the third season of The Bear and the 36th season of The Simpsons. Hopefully, he is about to change that with his upcoming films.
We’re going to see Cena more in WWE instead of the movies this year, as he has announced his retirement from professional wrestling after 2025. However, fans will eventually get to see him in some action-packed and comedy films.

His movie slate ranges from the action-comedy film Heads of State to the long-gestating The Janson Directive. He will also reprise his DC anti-hero role in the second season of James Gunn’s Peacemaker. Cena is set to appear in the following movies next.

From spy spoofs to hitmen with a heart, these action-packed comedies bring the same chaos and laughs as ‘Deli Boys.’
Hulu’s “Deli Boys” is exactly the kind of action-comedy I love - fast, funny, and in a world that’s “the same but different.” If you haven’t checked it out yet, the show follows two Pakistani-American brothers who inherit their late father’s deli, only to realize he was secretly a crime boss. What starts as a simple inheritance quickly spirals into a wild ride full of gangsters, high-stakes deals, and a whole lot of absurdity. And if you’re anything like me, once you start a great action-comedy, you tear through it way too fast.
Luckily, there’s no shortage of shows that bring the same mix of action, humor, and off-the-wall energy. It’s one of my favorite genres - I even put together a list...

It’s another year of high-profile animated sequels, led by Disney’s “Zootopia 2,” DreamWorks’ “The Bad Guys 2,” and Nickelodeon/Paramount’s “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Square Pants” and the “Smurfs” film.
But there are plenty of attention-grabbing originals in 2025: “Pixar’s sci-fi “Elio,” DreamWorks’ “Dog Man,” Sony Pictures Classics’ “The Magnificent Life of Marcel Pagnol,” and Laika’s highly anticipated “Wildwood” (a tentative release). In addition, Netflix delivers another diverse slate: “In Your Dreams,” “K-Pop: Demon Hunters”, “Lost in Starlight” (the streamer’s first Korean-language animated film), “Plankton: The Movie” (with Nickelodeon), “Pookoo” (with Skydance Animation), and “The Twits” from Roald Dahl. Plus, Crunchyroll/Sony Pictures offer the theatrical anime event of the year with “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” (“Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle”).
Additionally, there are three Oscar-qualifying holdovers from 2024: “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,” “The Colors Within,” and “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie...

Stars: Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, Poppy Liu, Stephen Root, Billy Boyd, Ricky Gervais | Written and Directed by Peter Hastings
Written and directed by Peter Hastings, this delightfully manic animated comedy is based on the best-selling series of children’s graphic novels by Dav Pilkey. As such, the film is a spin-off, of sorts, from 2017’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, which was also based on Pilkey’s novels.
For a U-rated animated comedy, Dog Man has a surprisingly dark beginning. Indeed, it’s basically RoboCop, only instead of a cop and a robot, it’s a cop and his pet police dog (both voiced by Hastings). Sure enough, after an introduction to the crime-fighting pair, they are suddenly caught in an explosion, after which a nurse looks at their mangled bodies and says, “What if we sew the dog’s head onto the man’s body?...

Hollywood icon Ke Huy Quan-led Love Hurts and Josh Ruben's Heart Eyesopen strong but still can't outpace Dog Man.
Per Variety, DreamWorks Animation's Dog Man is still dominating the box office in its second weekend in theaters, even in spite of the releases of both the action comedy Love Hurts starring Ke Huy Quan and director Josh Ruben's new slasher comedy, Heart Eyes. While Heart Eyes has already brought in over $3.7 million in preview screenings and Friday showings, that only barely outpaced Dog Man's second Friday earnings of $3.2 million. Preview screenings and Friday showings of Love Hurts brought in $2.6 million, with forecasts for the weekend putting it at around $6 million, whereas Dog Man is on track to pass earnings of over $54 million within its first ten days, giving it an $18 million projection for its second weekend in theaters.

In her 30 years at the Atelier Advertising agency, Monica (Lauren Graham) has climbed the ladder of success. As we meet her, she’s CEO, she’s winning industry awards and she’s working on a commercial for Boppin’ Burgers to run during the Super Bowl. She’s even throwing a party at the office for the launch of a new campaign for Vibezz headphones! As everyone gathers to watch it air on TV, Monica seems unaware of its deficits. Playing into stereotypes — a Black guy breakdancing to hip-hop; a monk listening to vaguely Eastern New Age music — is bad; closing the spot with the slogan “All Vibezz Matter” is much worse. The office’s social media team, all young twentysomethings, probably would have tried to stop this ad from getting to air if they’d been involved in the creative process, but they weren’t, which is a mistake the...

Dog Man barked plenty loud at the domestic box office over the Jan. 31-Feb. 2 weekend, where it easily topped the chart with $35 million in another resounding win for the family marketplace. Its global opening of $40.2 million means it has already recouped the money it cost DreamWorks Animation and Universal to make the Captain Underpants spinoff, excluding marketing.
In North America, it scored the second-biggest January start ever for an animated film behind DreamWorks Animation’s 2016’s Kung Fu Panda 3 ($41.28 million), not adjusted for inflation.
The movie, about a man and a cop who must share the same body after something goes horribly awry, is the first kids pic to open since Mufasa: The Lion King at Christmas and Moana 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at Thanksgiving (all these weeks later, all three films remain in the top 10 chart, which is quite a feat). Universal and Dreamworks Animation‘s Dog Man is taking a bite out of crime during its debut with $1.36M in box office previews. The beat-patrolling pooch’s silver-screen launch is on par with other Dreamworks preview earnings, including The Bad Guys ($1.15M) and Trolls Band Together ($1.3M). According to Quorum, Dog Man could be the first box office blowout of the year as families flock to theaters for the canine cop’s feature-length presentation. “Dog Man has been on the rise. Two weeks ago, it was tracking behind Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, which opened to $23M. Today, awareness and unaided awareness are much higher than Paw. Could Dog reach $30M? It certainly seems possible,” said Quorum. According to other analysts, Dog Man, set in the world of Captain Underpants, could snag an impressive $40M based on the desire for family-friendly fare at the cinema.

Watch out, “Wolf Man” and “Better Man,” because the box office is about to be taken over by “Dog Man.”
Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s new movie has made $1.36 million at the box office in Thursday previews. It’s expected to make between $25 million to $30 million, though some predictions are as high as $40 million due to the demand for family fare.
Set in the kid-friendly world of “Captain Underpants,” “Dog Man” is written and directed by Peter Hastings and follows the adventures of the titular half dog, half police officer who fights crime. While Dog Man himself doesn’t speak, the voice cast is made up of Pete Davidson as Petey the cat, Dog Man’s feline nemesis; Lucas Hopkins as Li’l Petey, Dog Man’s sidekick; Lil Rel Howery as the police chief named Chief; Isla Fisher; Billy Boyd; Ricky Gervais; Stephen Root; Poppy Liu; Laraine Newman; Cheri Oteri; Melissa Villaseñor and more.

Chicago – A Big ‘Arf’ of rejection for this animated mutt that fails to fetch many laughs. Source book author Dav Pilkey (“Captain Underpants”) came up with Dog Man while in the second grade, and that’s about the upper age limit of those who may still find these sort of dim-witted antics entertaining.
After a gruesome accident, a cop and his trusty dog are injured and surgeons sew the dog’s head onto the cop’s body. So Dog Man (vocal effects by Peter Hastings) is a crime fighter who loses focus whenever a ball is around and other assorted dog related behaviors. He lives in a dog house and that’s about it. His arch nemesis is Petey the Cat (Pete Davidson) … a megalomaniacal cat out to take over the world with various harebrained contraptions, but is constantly thwarted by Dog Man. The movie is largely based on the first few Dog Man books,...

When one thinks about it, Dog Man's story is messed up. It's the tale of a police officer and his dog who are injured in the line of duty, leading to the brilliant and scientifically implausible idea of stitching the dog's head onto the man's body so both may continue to serve and protect the public. Essentially a children-friendly Robocop minus the consumerism satire, Frankenstein monstering its hero into Man's best law enforcement friend. But then again, author Dav Pilkey has long walked a fine line between absurdist and playfully juvenile, delighting young readers everywhere with his Captain Underpants, Ricky Ricotta, and yes, the long-running Dog Man series for years.

Chicago Pd has featured an abundance of characters, and many of the actors and actresses who play them are familiar faces. Series mainstays and those with much briefer runs alike have typically starred in at least one other TV show or movie fans are likely to have seen. Some of them have careers dating back decades, while others are best known for more modern work.
By sheer coincidence, many actors involved with the franchise are well-known for featuring in fantasy, sci-fi, and horror works. The stars of Chicago Pd have had major roles in franchises like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Arrowverse, and in movies like Monkey Shines. These performances are all excellent, and show the range of the long-running police procedural's cast.

Bill Hader’s acclaimed but underappreciated dark comedy series on HBO, Barry, is a much better follow-up to Dexter than Dexter’s own official spin-off, New Blood. Ever since Dexter ended its initial run with one of the worst-received series finales of all time, Showtime hasn’t been able to let the franchise die. There was a prequel series about young Dexter called Dexter: Original Sin and there was a sequel series called Dexter: New Blood, picking up 10 years after the end of the original show, with Dexter’s old life catching up to him.
Neither of Dexter’s spin-offs has been able to provide a more satisfying conclusion to the story than the original series, and there isn’t much hope for the next planned offshoot, Dexter: Resurrection. There is a perfect follow-up out there for Dexter fans who want to see more antics from the secret double life of a killer,...

Dog Man kicks things off in January, bringing Dav Pilkeys popular comic book series to life, followed closely by The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep in February, which dives into the magical world of Geralt and adds depth to The Witcher universe. In June, Pixar brings audiences sci-fi film Elio, which introduces audiences to a young boy who finds himself mistaken for Earths ambassador to outer space. Jinkies indeed! After two divisive seasons, Max won’t be renewing Mindy Kaling’s adult animated series Velma for another season. The show, starring Kaling as the voice of Velma Dinkley, lasted for two seasons before Max ripped off its mask, revealing a cancelation notice where a mustache-twirling villain’s head should be. The cancelation of Velma hits hard for fans of the series who genuinely enjoy Kaling’s unique spin on the Scooby gang and their darkly-themed misadventures.
“Over the past two seasons, Mindy [Kaling] and Charlie [Grandy] have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise,” Max said in a statement. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.”

Velma Dinkley has solved her last mystery (for now).
Max has canceled its animated series Velma after two seasons. The show’s second season debuted in April, and a Halloween special that premiered on Oct. 3 marks the final outing for the show.
Velma, created by Charlie Grandy (The Office, The Mindy Project), is a more adult-oriented prequel/reimagining of the brainy Scooby-Doo character. Mindy Kaling (who’s also an executive producer) voices Velma, who’s haunted by the disappearance of her mother and dealing with the perils of being a teenager along with solving mysteries.

Over the course of nine seasons and 193 episodes, Night Court won seven Emmy Awards and was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series three times. However, just as there were plenty of highs, there were also some lows. For a show that aired for so long, Night Court was surprisingly able to keep its core cast of characters together once the showrunners found the right supporting cast for Harry Anderson as Judge Harold T. A solid creative team led by Reinhold Weege, who had also created Barney Miller, along with a talented cast helped the series survive from 1984 through 1992. Despite a few less-than-stellar seasons, Night Court remains beloved enough to warrant a reboot starring Melissa Rauch and John Laroquette.

Just over a year after the series finale of Barry aired on HBO, Bill Hader is returning to the premium cable channel for a brand-new comedy series. Its hard to imagine anyone being able to one-up the Emmy-winning series, but if someone can do it, it's Hader and the best premium cable network out there. Better yet, the actor-writer is set to unite with a fellow Barry scribe on the untitled comedy script, but it does not seem like Hader will be starring in it.
According to Variety, Bill Hader is co-writing a new HBO comedy pilot alongside Duffy Boudreau, a longtime friend of his and a collaborator on Barry. The latter's other credits also include Netflix's Big Mouth and the Marvel animated series Hit-Monkey starring Jason Sudeikis, streaming on Hulu. Colin Farrell is far from the first person to make his mark playing famous Batman rogue The Penguin in HBO’s aptly named new series “The Penguin.”
Of all the superheroes, Batman’s villains are the most recognizable. Among them The Penguin stands as possibly the most recognizable behind only the Joker. That’s led to quite a number of actors getting a crack at the character over the years beginning way back in the mid-60s.
There have been a few one-off performances in TV or animated movies where people lent their voice, but these 10 performers made their mark on the character especially felt. Before you get too deep into “The Penguin,” go back and appreciate the long history of the Batman villain on the big and small screen.

Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man is heading to the big screen for his first movie, arriving in early 2025 – and here’s the first trailer.

With Dog Man comes the first feature film directly based on Dev Pilkey's popular book series of the same name. The film's animation captures the look of the books' art style, though with a bit of enhancement to give the characters a more 3D appearance. The trailer can be viewed below.
