Per Variety, citing three sources with knowledge regarding movies with this budget and its current box office gross, Mickey 17 is likely to lose Warner Bros. between $75 million to $80 million by the end of its theatrical run. The film reportedly cost $118 million to make before marketing (which was said to be $80 million) and needed to gross about $300 million globally to break even but has only pulled in a mere $92.2 million worldwide to date.

Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 was expected to be a sci-fi spectacle, blending a mind-bending concept with top-tier talent. Starring Robert Pattinson, the film is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7 and follows a disposable worker who keeps getting cloned after every death. Sounds wild, right?

With Bong Joon-ho back in the director’s chair after his Oscar-winning Parasite and Pattinson fresh off his Batman fame, expectations were high. Warner Bros. was betting big on this ambitious project, hoping to pull in audiences eager for a fresh sci-fi experience.

But big dreams come with big budgets, and for Mickey 17 to be a real win at the box office, it needs to bring in some serious numbers. So, how much did the studio actually spend, and what does it take to break even? Let’s find out.

At an artificial intelligence summit in Paris last month, Vice President Jd Vance slammed the European Union for what he called “excessive regulation” around the advancement of artificial intelligence, adding that such regulation will hinder innovation in the tech industry.

His comments were music to the ears of tech giants like Google and OpenAI, who last week submitted formal proposals to the White House Office of Science and Technology (Ostp) regarding the U.S. AI Action Plan. Their suggestions, essentially: Regulation? Who needs that?

Specifically, both companies included sections in their proposals regarding copyright and argued that, when it comes to copyright laws, the government should apply the fair use doctrine to AI. OpenAI said doing so is “not only a matter of American competitiveness — it’s a matter of national security.” Google said it’s “essential for accelerating AI in science.”

The later years of Martin Scorsese's career have been filled with experiments and easy swings, and Shutter Island thankfully falls into the former category. Not that Shutter Island is anything groundbreaking, but in the context of Scorsese's filmography, it gives him a chance to lean into the detective film noir themes he has been toying with his whole career. Shutter Island is a puzzle-box mystery thriller that relies on its oppressive moods to trap the audience and uses a solid Leonardo DiCaprio to catapult us into an inescapable labyrinth. Scorsese's direction remains remarkably vibrant and youthful, mischievously teasing the central mystery subtly.

Shutter Island follows DiCaprio and his partner, played by Mark Ruffalo, as they investigate the disappearance of someone with a mental health condition on the island. The movie lovingly plays into its genre tropes and gives Scorsese his chance to don his hat and light up a cigar to smoke.

Despite being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its very first year (2008), this version of Bruce Banner, played by Oscar nominees Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo, really hasn't gone toe-to-toe with many actual Hulk villains from the comic books. A big reason is because of the messy solo film rights for the character between Marvel Studios and Universal Pictures, meaning Hulk hasn't had a film or story to himself since The Incredible Hulk back in 2008.

Warner Bros. is moving Mickey 17 to digital just 18 days after its theatrical release. The film will be available online starting March 25.

The movie has struggled at the box office. In its first weekend, it made $19 million in the U.S. and Canada. So far, it has earned $62 million worldwide. But with a $118 million budget and $80 million spent on marketing, it needs $340–400 million to break even. Warner Bros. expects to lose around $100 million.

In South Korea, Mickey 17 had a strong start, making $1.7 million on its opening day. It went on to earn $9 million in its first weekend. But in the U.S., ticket sales dropped fast. The film is expected to make just $7.5 million in its second weekend.

Critics gave Mickey 17 mostly positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 78% score. Some praised its unique sci-fi story and humor.

The film is performing well, but its hurdle is its very high budget. It has to earn around $250 million to reach break-even, and then it will make some profit. For now, it is performing well and has maintained its stronghold at the US box office, remaining at the #1 spot in the domestic box office chart. The film has an ensemble cast, including Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, and Toni Collette.

According to Luiz Fernando’s report, Mickey 17 collected a decent $1.2 million on Thursday, experiencing a drop of -17.1% from Wednesday.

As 2025 kicks off, several book to movie adaptations can be expected to move forward to completion, some with release dates already slated for the quarter century marker.

Mickey17, directed by Bong Joon Ho, arrived in theaters in early March. Netflix released it’s big-budget sci-fi film The Electric State, which is based on a graphic novel, March 14.

Edgar Wright’s The Running Man and Josh Boone’s Regretting You, which will likely follow in the footsteps of the Blake Lively-starring It Ends With Us and further pave a path for future Collen Hoover film adaptations like Verity and Reminders of Him.

Bong Joon Ho’s first film in space is a specific take on sci-fi, where, as you’d expect from the “Parasite” director, every detail is carefully thought out as he put his unique stamp on the genre. The film is based on Ashton Edward’s 2022 novel “Mickey 7,” but as the “Mickey 17” writer/director told IndieWire on the Toolkit podcast, there were certain things he was drawn to before even reading the book, having first received a 10-page summary of the novel.
