It looks as if Warner Bros. isn’t the only schedule going through a schedule change with their movies. The new Street Fighter reboot was recently reported to have gone through some production changes as Sony was once in collaboration with Talk to Me directors, Danny and Michael Philippou, for re-adapting the famous fighting game before getting into a scheduling conflict and Kitao Sakurai, who had helmed episodes of Peacock’s Twisted Metal series, would step up for the task.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Street Fighter has now been taken off Sony’s release schedule after it recently secured a premiere date for March 20, 2026. No reason has yet to be given; however, the studio has also rearranged their schedule for Shiver, a shark thriller from the director of Violent Night, Tommy Wirkola, which was set to star Phoebe Dynevor.

The Street Fighter movie has been removed from Sony’s 2026 release schedule, leaving the videogame adaptation’s future in doubt.
After a period of uncertainty over who would be the directing the film, the Street Fighter movie from Sony and Legendary appeared to have finally found some traction in the past few months. Around six months ago, reports suggested that Kitao Sakurai – director of the prank-based road movie Bad Trip – was in place to direct Street Fighter.
Depending on which outlet’s reporting you plump for, Sakurai has been in place for over six months or substantially less time than that. Either way, one timescale that wasn’t shifting was the film’s March 2026 release date, and the longer things went on without casting news or a shoot date, the less likely that calendar spot looked.
And as of today, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the film won’t be making that March 2026 slot.

Less than a month after the film landed director Kitao Sakurai, Sony has removed Legendary’s planned adaptation of the “Street Fighter” video game franchise from the release calendar.
The studio also shifted release of Tommy Wirkola’s upcoming shark thriller “Beneath the Storm,” moving it from August 2025 to July 3, 2026 to serve as a centerpiece of its blockbuster slate. That film also has a new name to go with the new release date, and is now called “Shiver.”
Emmy nominee Kitao Sakurai was announced as director for “Street Fighter” in February. The fate of that film is not known, but if it gets rescheduled, it will be co-developed and co-produced with Capcom, the video game developer and publisher behind the long-running franchise of fighting games.

Following the exit of the Philippou Brothers (Talk to Me) as directors in June 2024, despite Sony reserving Mar. 20, 2026 as a release date, news surrounding the film adaptation of Street Fighter went quiet. Then, in Feb. 2025, a new director was announced — Kitao Sakurai. It was a bold and exciting update and one which has now been trampled upon with the news that Sony Pictures has completely pulled Street Fighter from its release calendar for now, removing it from that 2026 release date. Sorry, Street Fighter fans. K.O. indeed.

A new release date and title is lurking for Sony Pictures’ shark thriller starring Bridgerton alum Phoebe Dynevor. The pic formally known as Beneath the Storm from director Tommy Wirkola now is titled Shiver and is set for summer 2026.
After originally being set to hit theaters on August 1 this year, the film is swimming to July 3, 2026. That, of course, is the Independence Day weekend — the setting for another summer popcorn flick starring a large, bloodthirsty fish from a half-century ago. The shift means Shiver now will go up against the latest installment of Universal’s Minions franchise, which opens July 1, 2026.
The plot of Shiver, which also stars Whitney Peak and Djimon Hounsou, is under wraps.
Adam McKay and Kevin Messick are producing under their Hyperobject Industries banner along with Wirkola. D. Scott Lumpkin is the exec producer.
Sony also said today that Legendary’s live-action Street Fighter has been taken off the release calendar.

The planned Street Fighter movie is sliding into limbo, while Phoebe Dynevor’s shark thriller is set to make a splash a bit later than planned.
Sony Pictures has removed Legendary’s Street Fighter film off of its theatrical release calendar after having previously scheduled it for March 20, 2026. Based on the popular video game franchise, the project is co-developed and produced with Capcom and had not yet announced its cast.
The Hollywood Reporter reported last month that Kitao Sakurai, who directed Netflix’s Eric André-led comedy feature Bad Trip from 2021, was set to direct the video game adaptation. Directors Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me) had been attached to a previous iteration of the project. Sony and Legendary’s distribution pact ended last year.

Legendary and Capcom's planned Street Fighter reboot hit a major setback when Danny and Michael Philippou - who helmed Aussie horror hit Talk To Me and the upcoming Bring Her Back - stepped away from the project, but a new director has now been found.
Following a 2024 report from Daniel Richtman, THR has now confirmed that Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip) has signed on to helm the film.
Sakurai is probably best known for writing, directing and exec producing The Eric Andre Show, and has also directed the pilot and several episodes of the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series Butterfly, as well as episodes of Peacock’s video game adaptation Twisted Metal.
Reports indicate that "scheduling was partly to blame" for the Philippou brothers' decision, as the filmmakers had shifted their focus to heir next project, Bring Her Back, which recently debuted its first trailer.

The directors of Talk To Me return with Bring Her Back, starring Sally Hawkins. Here’s a disturbing trailer and new details:
A24 has released an array of fantastic horror films over the years, one of them being 2022’s Talk To Me, Danny and Michael Philippou’s debut that featured a brilliantly ghoulish set-up: a cursed hand and a bunch of teenagers playing with it, blind to the doom that will surely follow.
It’s no surprise that A24 signed up the Philippou brothers to work on a sequel to Talk To Me, but also for another original horror project called Bring Her Back. The latter is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas on the 30th May 2025, having been shot in Adelaide last June and July.
The terrific Sally Hawkins stars, with Billy Barratt, Stephen Phillips, Sally-Anne Upton, Jonah Wren Phillips, Olga Miller, Mischa Heywood, Liam Damons, Alina Bellchambers all co-starring.

The road to developing Legendary’s new live-action Street Fighter movie has been a bumpy one; the project lost directors Danny & Michael Philippou last summer when the filmmakers shifted to focus on Bring Her Back. Today, Deadline reports that a new director has taken the reins.

Sony Pictures previously announced that the new movie based on the popular video game franchise was set for theatrical release on March 20, 2026. With the new director in place, this date will likely hold but it’s still early yet.

Here comes a new challenger to direct Legendary's upcoming Street Fighter movie. After Talk to Me duo Danny and Michael Philippou left the project last year due to scheduling conflicts, Kitao Sakurai has been tapped to take their place in adapting the iconic Capcom fighting game franchise. The transition between creatives at the helm still hasn't affected the release date yet though, as the live-action film is still expected to hit theaters on March 20, 2026. Capcom has remained closely involved throughout the entire process to ensure this latest attempt at bringing Ryu, Ken, and the rest to the big screen goes off without a hitch despite the turnover.

Despite having made sequels to almost all of his films (with mixed results), Kevin Smith has finally confirmed that one of his best movies is getting a second installment. Dogma, saw the infamous Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) travel with a young woman, Bethany (Linda Fiorentino), the angel, Metatron (Alan Rickman), and the 13th disciple, Rufus (Chris Rock) to find God (Alanis Morissette) and prevent the demons Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) from returning to heaven. Dogma has become a cult-classic like most of Smith's movies earning a devout following, and angering several religious organizations in the process.
Fans have been waiting 25 years for Kevin Smith to return for Dogma 2. Speaking at this year's Vulture Festival, Smith confirmed he's in development on the long awaited sequel. The director began, joking that fans are skeptical about seeing a sequel to such a beloved movie, saying, "Some people will be like,...

Following the exit of the Philippou Brothers, Bad Trip director Kitao Sakurai is reportedly in place to bring Capcom’s beloved Street Fighter franchise to the big screen.
Round Two: Fight! It looks like the second attempt to get Legendary and Capcom’s Street Fighter revival off the ground with a director is up and running. Back in June of this year, we covered a report which stated that both companies were lining the project up for a 2026 release. The only problem? The film didn’t have a director. Well, it did have a director at one point, two of them in fact, but by the point that that 2026 date was revealed, they’d both departed.
The Philippou brothers – makers of 2022’s incredible Talk To Me – were originally slated to direct Street Fighter, a movie based on Capcom’s enduringly popular fighting videogame franchise featuring a colourful cast of martial artists from across the globe.

Legendary and Capcom's planned Street Fighter reboot recently hit a major setback when Danny and Michael Philippou - who helmed Aussie horror hit Talk To Me - stepped away from the project, but a new director may have been found.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip) has now signed on to helm the film.
Reports indicate that "scheduling is partly to blame" for the Philippou brothers' decision, as the studio was hoping to begin shooting the movie fairly soon, and the filmmakers had shifted their focus to what will now be their next project, Bring Her Back, which is currently shooting in Australia.
It's a shame that the Philippou brothers will no longer take the helm, as they sounded very enthusiastic about the film during a recent interview.

During a recent interview, cult director Kevin Smith reflected on the intense backlash he received from religious and right-wing groups following the premiere of his most "controversial" movie, Dogma. Released in 1999, Dogma followed Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck), two fallen angels desperate to get back into heaven. After finding a loophole that would allow them to return, a rugged group bands together to stop them, knowing their return would destroy the universe. Dogma is now regarded as one of Smith's best movies by his fans, but the movie wasn't so universally beloved when it was released...

After a concerning lead-up to the show’s release, Sony‘s Twisted Metal is doing donuts around audience expectations! The car combat-oriented comedy series is Peacock’s “most-binged” comedy premiere, with the average account watching roughly three episodes per sitting, with some opting to knock the entire season out in one glorious shot. The Twisted Metal Peacock premiere is an outstanding sign for Sony’s future adaptations of popular gaming properties.

The world of Twisted Metal is full of unexpected chaos and dark turns. For much of the cast, embracing that unpredictable tone is crucial to survival. But for Agent Stone, a hardline authoritarian trying to bring his own sense of "order" to a post-apocalyptic landscape, that chaos is something to be stamped down. Throughout the ten-episode series, Stone serves as a dangerous antagonist to some of the show's primary characters -- but isn't doing vile things for villainous reasons.
Sitting down with Cbr to discuss Twisted Metal, Thomas Haden Church broke down why he doesn't perceive Stone as a villain in the traditional sense, compared the role to Anthony Hopkin's approach to Hannibal Lecter, and discussed the value of having a clear view of his entire character arc even before the show began filming.

Peacock’s bold, bloody adaptation of the PlayStation vehicular combat classic, Twisted Metal, struggles to balance camp with car carnage.
“What do you say, John? Will you drive?”
There’s been a recent run of exceptional video game adaptations between The Last of Us, Castlevania, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and The Super Mario Bros and Sonic the Hedgehog movies. There’s no longer the same stigma that once accompanied video game series and movies. Streaming services are now taking major swings on video game IPs whether it’s Netflix’s The Witcher, Amazon’s upcoming Tomb Raider series, or Peacock’s Twisted Metal. It wasn’t long ago when a Twisted Metal TV series would have been a ludicrous venture, but it’s now as good an idea as any. Twisted Metal has a dark, absurdist world that’s had decades to develop. There’s easily a strong enough foundation for a weird and memorable limited series.

With its rave reviews, three-month window of cultural supremacy and 24 Emmy nominations, HBO’s The Last of Us gave all subsequent game-to-screen translations an exhilarating new freedom. It’s no longer necessary for an adaptation to bear the weight of an entire genre’s credibility. “Greatness” has been achieved and it’s now fully acceptable for a video game adaptation to simply be “decent.”
Huzzah!
Peacock’s new series based on the venerable and versatile Twisted Metal franchise is — and I mean this generally as a compliment — quite decent. Both as colorful and as deep as a shimmering oil slick on a sweltering stretch of abandoned blacktop, Twisted Metal lacks the budget and ingenuity to consistently live up to the game’s sense of unrelenting mayhem. But its limitations make room for a solid character-based story to develop around stars Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz.
