Roger Ebert was a film critic with the unique power to convey his passion for film to the masses. His enthusiasm was not blind, however, and he held the oft-maligned horror genre to an especially high standard. This list of the ten best films from Ebert's "Greatest Movies" collection illustrates his understanding of what makes a horror film a masterpiece.
Ebert believed that a horror film should "exorcise" something for the viewer — to help the audience process dark and traumatic feelings. Beginning with the German Expressionist revolution and reaching into the gory excesses of the 1970s and '80s, this wide-ranging list of films showcases the genre at its best. The critic's clear-eyed commentary on each picture will show fans why horror cinema will never die.

A few months ago, legendary director and cinematic gatekeeper Martin Scorsese shared a recommendation for the horror film I Saw the TV Glow. Now, Scorsese has taken a moment to hype up another horror film, and this time it was The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu.
An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen (Greta Schroeder). After Orlok reveals his vampire nature, Hutter struggles to escape the castle, knowing that Ellen is in grave danger. Meanwhile Orlok’s servant, Knock (Alexander Granach), prepares for his master to arrive at his new home.

F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horrors was an unauthorized yet first adaptation of Bram Stoker 1897’s novel Dracula, the most influential literary source for the vampire legend. To evade copyright law, Nosferatu’s screenwriter Henrik Galeen changed the story from London to the fictional small-town of Wisborg, Germany, and also altered the characters’ names. But Bram Stoker’s estate filed suit, claiming the adaptation was an infringement. The German court ruling (in 1925) ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed. As a result producer Albin Grau (also the film’s costume designer and art director) who produced only Nosferatu under his company banner, Prana Film was forced to declare bankruptcy. The orders were followed meticulously although one print, thankfully, found its way to the United States.

One of the final movies of 2024 to come out is the much-anticipated remake of the silent film Nosferatu. Robert Eggers undertook the monumental task of remaking the 102-year-old classic movie. Eggers is also famous for making The Northman and The Lighthouse and has now gifted 2024 with one of the finest horror films in recent years.
Unlike most horror movies, Nosferatu is more subtle and relies more on more traditional filmmaking techniques as opposed to gore, jump scares, and cheesy acting. There are a good amount of horror films that have similar philosophies in their aesthetics, and tempo or are just willing to go against the tropes of the genre.

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Nosferatu (2024).
Bram Stoker’s Dracula is arguably the most important and well-known horror text in modern history. Originally published in 1897, this epistolary novel follows a young solicitor and his wife as they’re attacked by an ancient vampire attempting to move from his isolated castle to the bustling UK. Stoker’s gothic story was itself adapted from centuries of folklore describing a night-dwelling beast who seduces then sucks the blood of innocent victims. Twenty-five years after publication, F.W. Murnau brought Stoker’s novel to the screen in the 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. Set in 1838, this loose and unauthorized retelling chronicles a similar vampiric plague in the fictional town of Wisborg, Germany. More than a century later, Robert Eggers tackles these two classic texts while adding his particular brand of feminist mysticism. Rather than a helpless victim corrupted by darkness, his...

You’ve likely heard the hype. This Christmas, Robert Eggers brings us his fourth feature film, as he offers the legend of Nosferatu to the big screen. Eggers remake or reboot, whatever you’d like to call it, is an exceptional film. The performances from Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe are terrific. Yet it is both Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgard that bring a bloody heart and soul to this darkly beautiful and haunting feature. It’s rare to see such care taken to create a villain with tons more depth than your generic movie monster. Eggers examines this by incorporating elements of both the original Nosferatu and the legacy of Dracula.
Recently, we sat down to interview Mr. Eggers about his latest feature. The filmmaker discussed the influences that went into this dark new nightmare. He talked about merging the elements of Dracula, among others,...

For many horror fans, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is the most anticipated movie of 2024, perhaps even of the decade so far. It has had a troubled history with many fits and starts along the way before finally reaching screens after nearly a decade in the making (Bloody Disgusting first reported on an Eggers helmed Nosferatu in July of 2015) this Christmas Day. There is much at stake and there are big shoes to fill for this movie but if the pre-release buzz is any indication, the film may well exceed its monumental expectations.
The history of Nosferatu reaches back over one hundred years and is one of the greatest and most consistent of all horror legacies. Ostensibly retellings of Dracula, the major Nosferatu films become something unique from the world’s most famous vampire with far more sinister underpinnings than the majority of “official” Dracula stories. True horror fans will want to watch the original 1922 German horror film Nosferatubefore seeing Robert Eggers' new interpretation that releases on Christmas day. While Count Orlock is not exactly like Dracula, the two are synonymous in their iconic representation of the blood-sucking vampire.

The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) is set to reach theatres on Wednesday, December 25th – and while there has been a lot of talk about the transformation Bill Skarsgard (It) underwent to play the title character (Skarsgard himself has said that playing Nosferatu / Count Orlok was like “conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me. … I do not think people are gonna recognize me in it.“), it has been confirmed that we won’t be seeing a good shot of the dead Transylvanian nobleman until the movie reaches the big screen.

Back in 2015, it was announced that The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers (who was, at that time, had only made The Witch) was planning to remake F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here). It took Eggers several years to get to Nosferatu, though, and we’ll finally have the chance to see his take on the concept when his movie reaches theatres on Wednesday, December 25th. About eight and half months after Eggers’ Nosferatu was first announced, we heard that filming had begun on a separate Nosferatu remake. Or, as the director referred to it, a remix. That was David Lee Fisher’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror… and that movie has now made its way out into the world! Fisher’s movie is available for purchase on Prime Video, going for the price of $4.99. It will also be released through Apple TV tomorrow,...

Silents Synced combines silent movies with rock albums, aiming to attract new audiences to cinemas. Blue Starlite Entertainment and CineLife Entertainment collaborate on events like "Radiohead: Nosferatu" and "Sherlock, Jr./R.E.M." Robert Eggers' Nosferatu remake, featuring Bill Skarsgrd and an ensemble cast, will release on December 25, 2024.
If there's one thing that classic Hollywood silent movies are desperately missing, it's the screeching noise of electric guitars. Music has long accompanied the dialogue-less moving pictures of iconic silent movies, but not like this. Silents Synced is a new series from Blue Starlite Entertainment and CineLife Entertainment, which screens silent movies accompanied by iconic rock albums. Per a report from Deadline, the first show will blend F.W. Murnau's seminal Nosferatu (1922) with two Radiohead albums that are traditionally paired (Kid A & Amnesiac). Following this, the companies are also developing a pairing of Buster Keaton's Sherlock, Jr. with music from R.E.M....

Several months ago, we got our first look at the “crazy vampire hunter” character Willem Dafoe plays in The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) – but we still haven’t gotten a good look at the title character, who is brought to life this time around by Bill Skarsgard (It). It would probably be for the best if we don’t see Skarsgard’s Count Orlok until the film reaches theatres on Wednesday, December 25th – but during a new interview with Esquire, the actor did discuss the process of playing the character, which he said was like conjuring pure evil.
During his conversation with Esquire, Skarsgard revealed that, during the Nosferatu production, he had to spend three to six hours every day getting the makeup and prosthetics put on so he could become Count Orlok.

Director Robert Eggers shares that Willem Dafoe's character will have a standout scene with real flames and 2000 live rats in the upcoming Nosferatu remake. The use of rats in the scene suggests that the vampire Count Orlok will once again use them to spread plagues and extend his terrifying influence, staying true to the original film. Eggers' dedication to recreating Murnau's story is apparent as he combines modern and old-fashioned filmmaking techniques in his unique take on the classic vampire tale.
Nosferatu director Robert Eggers highlights a key moment in his upcoming horror movie that centers on Willem Dafoe's vampire hunting Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, which was a complex but fun scene to bring to life. Sexy horror movies have been around since the early days of cinema, pushing boundaries with carnality and carnage. The best sexy horror movies blend sensuality and shock, using sex and desire as a source of horror. From strange intimate encounters to erotic tension, these movies deliver on both scare factor and suggestive content.
Despite the genre's focus on the morbid, macabre, and menacing, there are dozens of sexy Horror movies, with the best masterfully blending the terrifying with the titillating. Scariness and sexuality make surprisingly comfortable bedfellows, and there have been horror movies that blend the eerie with the erotic since the dawn of cinema. Whether it was Fay Wray having her blouse suggestively ripped in the 1933 monster-flick King Kong or Greta Schröder in her nightdress in 1922's Nosferatu, horror has always pushed boundaries with carnality just as much as carnage. Some of the first non-adult movies to include nudity were horror films,...

Robert Eggers takes his tendency to stay faithful to a laboriously era-accurate vision to the story of Count Orlok in a remake of Nosferatu. The director of such films as The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman speaks with Total Film Magazine about Bill Skarsgård’s unrecognizable look for his adaptation. According to ComingSoon, Eggers says Skarsgård’s performance will be unlike anything he’s ever done before. Seeing as how he’s already shown his creepy demeanor in the It films and Barbarian, it will be interesting to see how different his interpretation will be to Max Schreck from the original 100-year-old film.
Eggers explained, “There are things that are Schreck-like but I felt we had to do something else. Basically I was like, ‘What would a dead Transylvanian nobleman actually look like for real?’ Bill lost a tremendous amount of weight.” He added, “He’s so transformed in...

This Last Voyage Of The Demeter article contains spoilers.
Anyone who has read Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, or seen almost any movies which have been adapted from it, knows the ending to director André Øvredal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter. It is one chapter, and an early one at that, which ultimately provides its titular vampire with a change of scenery. It has a full arc, and no one survives. It’s all in “The Captain’s Log,” with additional information cut from the outside perspective of a character who was never onboard. It really is the most frightening chapter of the book, and does indeed warrant its own individual telling. But we only get smatterings of it from Liam Cunningham’s Captain Eliot, who narrates the bookends of The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
While all the notes are here, Demeter’s basic plot immediately differs by adding several characters,...

During a recent interview with Empire magazine, Eggers said that it was a good thing that he wasn’t able to make Nosferatu earlier, because even after making The Lighthouse and The Northman, this movie still pushed him “beyond his capabilities”. Which is exactly what he was going for.
Eggers said, “I’m trying to go beyond what I’m capable of. As always, it was a difficult shoot. Last night we were doing a scene on a ship with a lot of rain and waves, and the rain deflector, which tries to blow rain out of the lens, was breaking down and fogging. I spent...

Eight years after we first heard that The Witch writer/director Robert Eggers was going to be taking the helm of a remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here), Eggers’ take on the concept has finally made it through production. Nicholas Hoult can be seen on the big screen in this weekend’s Dracula horror comedy Renfield (read our review Here), where he plays the title character – and since making that film, he has also been hard at work on another vampire movie: writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here). Speaking with Total Film, Hoult said he was convinced to take a role in Eggers’ Nosferatu because he believes the film will be “really special”.
Hoult told Total Film, “Rob has wanted to make Nosferatu since he was eight years old and he did a play of it as well when he was in high school, so it’s been a passion project of his for a long time. Honestly, I wasn’t looking to go back into the vampire world again, but his style and tone are just so completely the...
