Legendary Entertainment has enlisted actor-comedian Jermaine Fowler to join the cast of the upcoming remake of 1978’s mondo horror film Faces of Death.

Per Deadline, Fowler, who gained recognition for his performances in comedies like Sorry to Bother You and Coming 2 America, will be starring opposite Dacre Montgomery and Barbie Ferreira in the Faces of the Death remake. Saved by the Bell’s Josie Totah and Grammy nominee Charlie Xcx have also been cast in the project, which is currently in production in Louisiana. Further details about their characters are still being kept under wraps.

Fowler joins Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah and Charli Xcx, who are on sent down in Louisiana on the Daniel Goldhaber-directed movie.

Legendary’s version of the pic is co-written by Isa Mazzei and Goldhaber.

The original film from filmmaker John Alan Schwartz was an early example of viral videos. Although it was staged and fictional, many thought it was real and it often was rented under the counter by older brothers at video shops. The film advertised itself as “Banned in 52 Countries,” though that was simple hype.

The Legendary Entertainment update of John Alan Schwartz’s controversial but commercially successful movie, is being co-written by Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber and directed by Goldhaber.

As predicted long ago, Faces of Death is getting rebooted for the 21st century at Legendary Entertainment. The studio has reportedly just picked up the rights to the faux documentary that was originally released in 1978 and became a cult hit at the time, spawning multiple sequels in the following years. Because many video rental stores refused to carry the movie, it was frequently passed around on bootleg VHS throughout the 1980s and 90s.

For Legendary's reboot, Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber, the team behind 2018's Cam, will respectively write and direct the new movie. Susan Montford and Don Murphy of Angry Films are producing, and Cory Kaplan will co-produce with Rick Benattar of BT Productions executive producing. John Burrud, who produced the original Faces of Death movies, is also on board to work on the reboot.

Filmmaker John Alan Schwartz, best known for directing the movies in the controversial Faces of Death franchise, has sadly passed away. In a post shared on Schwartz's personal Facebook account, the late filmmaker's wife confirms Schwartz peacefully died this week, although the cause of death hasn't been made clear at this time. Although the filmmaker credited himself with pseudonyms and lived a fairly private life, it's clear from his wife's message the man was as far-removed from the horrific nature of the Faces of Death movies as could be.

For older horror fans who remember sneaking behind the "special curtain" at the local video joint to see Death staring back at us, it is a special memory. Oh, the number of times I got beaten for sneaking Faces of Death home.
