Invincible Season 3 saw an explosive finale when Conquest arrived on Earth to punish Mark and a battle ensued between them. Robert Kirkman’s series didn’t fail to impress us with this third season as well. There was one element that perfectly accompanied all the fantastic characters and jaw-dropping scenes.

Warning: this article discusses themes of suicide, sex, and sexual violence.
Hayden Silas Anhedönia, better known by her stage name Ethel Cain, has made quite an imprint on the music scene since her 2022 album Preacher's Daughter took critics by storm with its twisted, Southern Gothic-inspired story and sound. An intense exploration of family trauma and sexual violence, partially inspired by Anhedönia's own youth spent as the child of a deacon, Preacher's Daughter was a mishmash of genres that culminated in an incredibly unique sonic landscape, which critics ate up readily.
Cain's latest release is Perverts, which, sonically, seems to be reactionary to Preacher's Daughter. While only nine tracks long, Perverts has a runtime of nearly an hour and a half; notably absent are any of the four- and five-minute, relatively easily digestible or pop-adjacent songs from the previous album, like the single "American Teenager." With this release, Cain seems...

DJ Shadow has revealed his eighth album Action Adventure will drop on October 27th along with the nearly all-instrumental collection’s first single, “Ozone Scraper.”
The 14-track project eschews the California producer’s more recent, guest-friendly offerings in an effort to “write music that flexed different energies.” He first prefaced the creative shift in an Instagram post on August 9th, sharing, “I needed to get personal and make music for myself again. I didn’t want to compromise or write music to give someone else a runway, I wanted to force myself to permeate every available sonic space and ‘own’ the total composition.”
“This is about my relationship to music,” he added in a statement tied to the official announcement. “My life as a collector and curator. All my records and tapes, and no one else’s.”

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at DJ Shadow's Six Days, directed by Wong Kar-Wai. Nobody films yearning like Wong Kar-wai. The director of In the Mood for Love, Chung-king Express, Happy Together and 2046 is a romantic at heart, even if his characters dally around each other and might miss their chance. It is the longing and the idea of things lost and never found that is the foundation of his movies. It's the panache and style with which he pulls those stories about lovelorn lovebirds off that make them memorable, though. Helped with the lensing of D.O.P. Christopher Doyle, often one of the Mvp's of his work, love...

Everyone likes everything now. In the years since streaming began to dominate listening habits, this twisted mantra has taken over the music industry, driven more by the desire for some algorithmic utopia than reality. Because everyone has access to everything, the theory goes, they must automatically like it all. It’s a credo at the very core of the mindset of the new look, pop-leaning Reading & Leeds festival. And today, everyone-likes-everything-now (Elen) comes up against its ultimate test.

In honor of the 10th anniversary of 2010’s InnerSpeaker Memories, Tame Impala has released a short film documenting the making of the seminal album. The footage was captured during the recording of the album at Australia’s Wave House Studio by Matt Sav.
In the 15-minute film, the footage showcases band frontman Kevin Parker creating and producing the album, as well as listening to DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing in the car. It’s an interesting glimpse back at the making of Tame Impala’s formative album, which helped propel the group into the spotlight.

Pixar’s Soul will be celebrated for many things, but chief among them should be the platform it gives, in American animation, to the great art form of jazz. We have come a long way from Jerry Seinfeld in Bee Movie, voicing a bee named Barry B. Benson, trying to woo a human character by inquiring, “Ya like jazz?”
Soul likes jazz very much. That’s a rare certainty in this ambitious film, which attempts to contemplate nothing less than the root of all human experience on this planet. It’s directed by Pete Docter, making his fourth feature for the famed animation house, who holds perhaps the best batting average of all the Pixar regulars. Monsters Inc. and Up in the 00s, and Inside Out in the last decade are benchmarks not just of the medium of animation, but also of imaginative storytelling in art meant for mass consumption.

Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy can’t be a cheap show to make. This superhero story is based on an ambitious, colorful comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá and as such it features big action setpieces, depictions of superpowers, and even a talking chimp or two.
Still it’s hard to imagine any portion of The Umbrella Academy’s budget is larger than the music clearance department. The series features a moody score from Jeff Russo but also a truly stunning amount of pop hits. The Umbrella Academy made its musical intentions clear in its first episode with the now-beloved dance scene set to Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now.” And the show’s investment in soundtrack and music has only grown from there.
“Music is such an important thing to me and I really take time to pick the songs,” showrunner Steve Blackman says.

Earlier in the week, Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno, drummer Abe Cunningham and keyboardist Frank Delgado hosted a virtual press conference on Zoom to share updates from quarantine — as well as revelations on the album that forever changed a genre.
The band confirmed that White Pony will be getting a reissue later in the year, as well as a remix LP titled Black Stallion.

DJ Shadow unveiled a different kind of pop-up video in the new lyric video for “Our Pathetic Age,” the title-track from his most recent album.
The song is a mid-tempo disco ballad that features a characteristically dramatic vocal performance from Future Islands’ Samuel T. Herring. In the video, directed and animated by Adam Dunn, Herring’s words appear in a ceaseless barrage of pop-up ads that flood the screen of an old computer. There’s some respite from the chaos and clutter during the instrumental breaks, including a cameo from...

DJ Shadow and De La Soul delivered an electrifying performance of their collaboration “Rocket Fuel” on Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday.
The appearance marked De La Soul and DJ Shadow’s first live performance together, and they were joined on stage by a lively five-piece horn section and top turntablists DJ Babu of Dilated Peoples and DJ Melo D of Beat Junkies. DJ Shadow and De La Soul take on some moon landing conspiracies — for laughs — in their new video for “Rocket Fuel.”
A sequel of sorts to DJ Shadow’s 2016 video “Nobody Speak” with Run the Jewels, this is a video you kind of have to see to believe. It takes a spin on the moon landing “hoax” by asking, “What if the moon landing was fake…and the plan went horribly wrong?” It’s absolute chaos combined with slapstick comedy, mixing archival footage from the actual moon landing with scenes of pure fantasy.

DJ Shadow unveiled a dense and multi-faceted new song, “Rosie,” set to appear on his forthcoming album, Our Pathetic Age, out November 15th via Mass Appeal.
“Rosie” boasts two distinct parts, starting with a propulsive beat based around smashing drums, a chopped up vocal sample and the occasional flash of some strange synth. Halfway through, however, the song deftly slips into a hypnotic groove, where the drums still snap, but the synths swirl into a headier space.

DJ Shadow has tapped De La Soul for a boisterous new track, “Rocket Fuel,” which marks the DJ/producer’s first new music since 2017.
“Rocket Fuel” boasts a quintessential DJ Shadow beat, with a surge of hard-hitting drums anchoring layers of vocal loops, horn samples and Shadow’s dizzying scratching. American rapper Pitbull is thankful to popular singer Guru Randhawa and DJ Shadow for putting in their creative vision to create 'Slowly slowly'. 'Slowly slowly'?infuses elements from the homegrown and global industry. The upbeat peppy number was shot in Miami in just a day. They went with a multilingual approach and incorporated English, Hindi and Spanish in the song. "I've shot a worldwide music video with DJ Shadow and Guru. So we're taking it from India to Dubai to Miami and all around the world. 'Dhanyavad' (thank you) to DJ Shadow and Guru for making this happen," Pitbull said in a statement.
To this, Shadow added: "During my time in the Us, my exploration of the trends in the western world of music reinstated my vision of infusing musical styles from two different parts of the world. I was in touch with Pitbull's team for over six months before this project actually took shape.

Back around the ‘90s, “music inspired by the film” albums got a bad name, as buyers tired of collections full of random recordings that clearly were inspired by nothing but the desire to use movie branding to launch a hit song. But Alfonso Cuarón, the director of “Roma,” is determined to find some artistic validity in the idea of a companion album that was created independently from a film’s soundtrack… and to actually have there be some truth in advertising in that “inspired by” tag.
Not one of the 15 songs on the newly released album “Music Inspired by the Film ‘Roma’” appears in or was intended for the Oscar-nominated movie. The closest any of the choices come is a fresh recording by English singer Laura Marling of Mary Hopkins’ 1968 hit “Those Were the Days,” a version of which does pop up in “Roma” — albeit not Hopkins’ version, but an easy-listening cover by Ray Conniff.

Not to be outdone by Ariana Grande’s impending record news, filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón has announced the track list and release date for his new album, which, coincidentally, is also due Feb. 8. He’s the curator of “Music Inspired by the Film Roma,” which was already teased by a Billie Eilish track, and is now revealed to include songs from an eclectic lineup of rock, pop and Edm acts including Beck, Patti Smith, El-p, DJ Shadow, Laura Marling and T Bone Burnett.
This new album is not to be confused with “Roma (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack),” which came out in December and contains the songs — mostly but not entirely Spanish-language — heard in the movie. The “Inspired By” album consists of all new recordings, mostly but not entirely in English, and credits as co-producers Lynn Fainchtein, who served as music supervisor on the film, along with Randall Poster, another celebrated music supervisor.

Beck recorded an ornate cover of Colourbox’s “Tarantula,” a song later made famous by This Mortal Coil, for his contribution to a compilation of songs inspired by Alfonso Cuarón’s Oscar-nominated film Roma. The song is a slow build, as orchestral strings and piano provide a moody bed for Beck’s reverb-saturated vocals; eventually, percussion joins in for a big outro. Leslie Feist and Alex Lilly contributed backing vocals to the recording.

Now that the Heathers TV series is finally making its way to air, it's releasing not one but two soundtracks to celebrate.
It's been a long and winding road for the Heathers TV show to make it to air.
The dark high school series based on the 1988 film of the same name was initially set to premiere on TV Land in 2017. Then Heathers made its way over to the newly launched Paramount Network instead. Paramount decided to table Heathers for the foreseeable future following a rash of school shooting in the U.S. Finally, Paramount gave Heathers a trim from 10 episodes to 9 and is set to release the series on October 25.
To celebrate finally getting to see the light of day, Heathers is getting not one but two original soundtracks on Lakeshore Records.

Los Angeles-based virtual reality startup Survious is getting ready to launch Electronauts, a new virtual reality (Vr) app that allows users to playfully mix and remix songs in real-time. Electronauts will launch on Htc Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation Vr headsets on August 7, and come with remixable tracks from musicians including The Chainsmokers, Odesza, Steve Aoki, Tiesto and DJ Shadow.
Survios first announced Electronauts late last year, and then demonstrated it at CES in Las Vegas this past January. The app sits somewhere between a game and a music production tool: It allows players jam with the individual elements of a track, and arrange them on the fly. Users can also team up with their online friends to jam together, and the music is accompanied by trippy 3D visuals.
Here’s the complete list of tracks available to remix with Electronauts at launch:
The Chainsmokers – Roses (ft. Rozes)

Only a couple of weeks before the release of Deadpool 2, the movie's soundtrack has been announced alongside the release of a full music video featuring Céline Dion singing her original song "Ashes" written for the movie. Of course, the music video wouldn't be complete without the inclusion of the Merc with the Mouth himself.
Rather than the song being funny and humorous, Celine Dion's Deadpool 2 music video shows the more emotional and tragic side of the movie. The song speaks of loss and heartbreak, which may reveal some of the darker tones in Deadpool 2. Despite being one of Marvel's funniest characters, Deadpool actually has a tragic backstory. Ryan Reynolds even spoke this week about how for every Deadpool movie, in order for the story to work, you need to take something away from him.
