Matthew McConaugheyhas revealed which season of the HBO crime anthology True Detectivehe thinks is the best of all. The actor was featured alongside Woody Harrelson in True Detective Season 1, one of the most acclaimed standalone TV seasons in modern television. His character, Rust Cohle, is a deeply scarred man with far too many demons inside him, and McConaughey is perfect in the role. But as good as his performance was, does that mean that True Detective Season 1 is also McConaughey's favorite season of the anthology series? What do you think?
After four seasons, and four completely different storylines, the series stands as one of the best of its genre. However, opinions vary on which season is the best one. Only a few details were enough to confirm that all seasons could be taking place in the same universe, but they vary in tone and characters.

Alex Garland breaks down how The Last of Us has successfully picked up from 28 Days Later and built upon it to tell a new emotional tale for audiences. The HBO series brought Naughty Dog's hit video game franchise to the big screen, exploring two survivors' trek across a devastated America after a horrific viral outbreak to find a cure. Penned by Garland and released in 2002, 28 Days Later follows Cillian Murphy's Jim navigating the ruins of a devastated London following an outbreak of the 28 Days Later franchise's virus that renders its victims as rage-filled monsters.
As Garland sat down with The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann for PlayStation's latest Creator to Creator podcast (via GamesRadar+), the writer had surprising praise for the franchise. In The Rivals of Amziah King, Andrew Patterson crafts a loving portrait of an Oklahoma community around the sweet relationship between a beekeeper and his estranged foster daughter. The director borrows from different genres — nostalgic Westerns, propulsive crime thrillers, high-stakes heist films and even musicals — to tell this winding tale about what makes a place and its people feel like home.
There’s an admirable audacity to the film, which premiered at SXSW; you can feel Patterson, who garnered critical acclaim for his slender and accomplished debut The Vast of Night, exploring new ways to tell a familiar story. But a blinkered narrative coupled with misty-eyed aesthetic choices yield a strange and scattershot result.
The film starts on assured but sentimental footing. Patterson delivers a compelling opening sequence with the glossy finish of a music video. Trucks pull into an outdoor eatery, and out of them emerges a gaggle of...

Standing ovations are rare at SXSW, but the Matthew McConaughey starring western/musical/drama The Rivals of Amziah King was far more than all right, all right, all right, earning one from the Paramount Theatre crowd in Austin on Monday.
On a sleepy night when all the big studio movies already have played, from out of the blue comes this heartwarming, unconventional feature from filmmaker Andrew Patterson. SXSW launched an Oscar Best Picture winner three years ago in A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, and it could have another one on their hands if a buyer gets off their butt and takes this WME sales title. There’s been some deliberation and waiting by buyers when it comes to acquiring movies. Errol Morris, director of the iconic true-crime documentary The Thin Blue Line, has partnered up with Netflix again in order to make a documentary about the Manson murders. The title is Chaos: The Manson Murders, and it's set to be released by Netflix on March 7, 2025.
Chaos: The Manson Murders is based on the 2019 book, Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties, by Tom O'Neill with Dan Piepenbring. The book offers an alternate version of the story that flowed into the mainstream in 1974 when case prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi released the bestseller Helter Skelter — becoming the version of the murders with which we are all familiar. In O'Neill's book, however, he argues that the 1969 Tate–Labianca murders committed by the Manson Family could have been associated with the CIA program Operation Chaos, which focused on domestic espionage.

Since the earliest days of Hollywood, Westerns have been a treasured corner of film for their depth and range, featuring the talents of figures like Clint Eastwood, John Ford, and Charles Bronson. Focusing on the challenges and settlement of the American frontier, these films address everything from prejudice and crime to violence and war. Naturally, the acclaimed genre has built up and fostered some of the best acting careers in the film industry, not to mention directors and writers.
Westerns have attracted some of the best talent in Hollywood history, from classic leading men like James Stewart, Robert Mitchum, and John Wayne to modern icons like Christian Bale and Russell Crowe. While the genre is often defined by its use of lone-wolf antiheroes and lawmen, ensemble movies provide an epic feel to the genre, focusing on a diverse range of characters. Quick Links The Story of A24's First Cow First Cow Isn't Like Most Other Western Films First Cow Is a Prime Example of A24's Contribution To Cinema
For just a little over a decade, A24 has been giving moviegoers some of the most creative and original films that have been major breaths of air from the typical kinds of major studio films. With Everything Everywhere All At Once winning the Oscar for Best Picture in 2023, the uniqueness of their brand has been embraced and celebrated in more ways than one. They've also become quite well-known for re-working genres and subverting tropes that are usually seen within them. Released in 2020, First Cow was one of many films whose theatrical release was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Luckily, however, that didn't stop it from reaching audiences in their homes and giving them a new take on the Western genre.

If you are looking for hidden gems, big Hollywood hits, or B-movie madness, Tubi has certainly become the platform with the most ad-supported free content you can possibly find anywhere on streaming. This is particularly true for fans of Westerns, with the platform offering more content than all the paid-for streaming services combined (though the quality can vary pretty drastically). Still, when a stand-out of the Western genre gets added to Tubi, it is always worth sharing.

Killers of the Flower Moon: Oscar hopes are dashed, reflecting The Irishman's zero awards history. Lily Gladstone misses Best Actress Oscar to Emma Stone's role in Poor Things. Based on true events, Scorsese's film delves into Osage murders and FBI's role in the 1920s.
The once-hopeful Oscar contender Killers of the Flower Moon came up empty at the 96th Academy Awards. This mirrors the underwhelming performance of Scorsese's previous Oscar contender, The Irishman, which also came home with zero awards.
Killers of the Flower Moon received a total of 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Martin Scorsese, and Best Actress for Lily Gladstone. Gladstone, who was arguably the favorite to take home the Best Actress award, lost to Emma Stone's lead role in Poor Things.

Oppenheimer's $960 million box office success shines even brighter when compared to its true 2023 rival, Killers of the Flower Moon. Despite Barbie's $1.44 billion earnings, Oppenheimer's $960 million box office haul on a $100 million budget is remarkably impressive. Its low budget, star-studded cast, spectacular effects, and the Barbenheimer frenzy all contributed to Oppenheimer's outstanding achievements.
Oppenheimer's $960 million box office achievement is even more impressive when weighed against its real 2023 movie rival instead of the Barbie movie. Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig's Barbie had simultaneous release dates in July 2023, which naturally brought about a rivalry over which film would perform better, even though the movies couldn't have been more different. The viral Barbenheimer battle ensued, galvanizing the hype and expectation the public had for the two films long after the day of the showdown transpired and, even today, is arguably still in the throes of the contest.

Country star Zach Bryan recruited Western film legend Matthew McConaughey for his “Nine Ball” music video, released on Monday.
The video, directed by Matthew Dillon Cohen, tells the story of a boy whose father is a gambling addict. McConaughey plays a pool shark who brings his young son to the bar while he bets cash against his opponent, played by Scott Shepherd.
In an alternate timeline, Tye Sheridan plays an older version of McConaughey’s son, who grows up to play billiards in the same pool hall as his father. The narratives jump back and forth from each other, depicting the effect of the father’s gambling on the son, and ends with a flashback shot of McConaughey carrying the young boy out of the bar after a bar fight.

Despite dropping out of the Top 10 in the US, Killers of the Flower Moon has crossed the $150 million milestone at the worldwide box office. The movie, produced on a massive $200 million budget, may struggle to be profitable as it needs to make about double its budget to be declared a box office success. Osage Indians are systematically slaughtered for their oil rights in early 1920s Oklahoma. Iconic auteur Martin Scorsese and frequent muse Leonardo DiCaprio return in a 206-minute crime epic of murderous greed. Killers of the Flower Moon, based on the nonfiction novel by David Grann, immerses you in a seedy world of good old boy corruption, death, and deceit. Foes feign friendship on a cinematic odyssey that's beautifully shot but suffers from sluggish pacing. Scorsese's trademark visual flair and sharp editing highlights a methodical storyline that fatigues from lack of mystery. He explores Osage culture in depth, but the film is primarily about the White men that betrayed them.
Ernest Burkhart (DiCaprio) arrives in Fairfax after a stint as a cook in World War I. He's met at the bustling train station by hawkers looking for workers in the booming oil industry. Through pure providence, the Osage struck black gold on reservation land.

Bad guys tend to have a good time at the Oscars. From Christoph Waltz‘s 2010 “Inglourious Basterds” win for Best Supporting Actor to Anthony Hopkins‘ iconic 1992 Best Actor win for “The Silence of the Lambs,” you can always count on Oscar voters to take notice of a villain.
While those two examples are fictional, some actors have also had Oscar luck by playing real-life killers. For example, Charlize Theron won for playing Aileen Wuornos. Wuornos murdered seven men between 1989 and 1990 while she was a prostitute in Florida. She shot and robbed the seven men, who Wuornos claimed were clients who had either raped or attempted to rape, claiming self-defense. However, she was sentenced to death and executed in 2002 for six of the murders. Theron took home the Best Actress Oscar in 2004 for her transformative performance as the killer in “Monster.”

The Last of Us production designer John Paino recently explained how the HBO series recreated the "ugly beauty" of Naughty Dog's 2013 video game of the same name.
Paino zeroed in on Episode 2, "Infected," as an example of how The Last of Us crew aimed to emulate the original game's aesthetic in an interview with Variety. "When we get to the Bostonian Museum [in Episode 2], it was a lot of actually like, 'How do we make it so that stuff feels like it’s growing into it?'" he said. "That’s the scary thing about the fungus, right? It's growing into things too, not only people, and we wanted to make sure that it popped in certain places." Paino added that The Last of Us' "atmospheric" concept art incorporated real-world reference material of "vegetation taking over," as well.

Wolves are not subtle creatures. It’s a rhetorical question: “Can you find the wolves in this picture?” Who couldn’t spot wolves among humans? They’re much smaller than people, much growlier. They have a vicious appetite and care only about satisfying it. What they lack in tact they make up in blunt aggression, tearing their victims apart limb-by-limb and leaving a blood-stained trail of evidence to prove it. They’re indignant, not the most intelligent, and they don’t speak the language. But that’s where William Hale differs: he speaks the language.
Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Killers of the Flower Moon makes no mistake about who is at the center of its tragedy: the Osage Nation. Shot primarily on location on the reservation in Oklahoma, the film opens and closes with Osage ceremonies, one mourning death and the other celebrating life, in that order. The story in-between,...
