Was fluent in German, having lived as a boy in Zurich, Switzerland.

Diminutive character actor with a penchant for dialects. He was most famous on radio as the voice of genial scientist Dr. Huer in the serial "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century". During the 1930's and 40's, he starred in many radio dramas, including "Crime Doctor", "Gang Busters" and "Inner Sanctum". On Broadway, he was best known for originating the role of Dr. Herman Einstein in "Arsenic and Old Lace".

Was the original actor cast in the Broadway production of Arsenic and Old. Lace as Dr. Herman Einstein opposite Boris Karloff.

In the U.S. from 1888, he graduated with a B.A. from Cornell University in 1907, followed by a Master's Degree in 1908. Immediately after leaving university, he joined the Bayonne Opera Company. From 1916, he worked with Stuart Walker's touring Portmanteau Players, and, in 1924, in stock with the Provincetown Players.

Great granddaughter was the producer of her High School's production of Arsenic and Old Lace; Edgar created the role of Dr. Einstein in the Broadway production of said show.

Had two children with wife Emilie Greenough Stehli, Francis (Frank) Stehli and Emilie-Anne (Nancy) Greenough Stehli (married name is Knoerzer).
