DC Studios started working on a Sgt. Rock movie in November 2024, with Luca Guadagnino as the director and Daniel Craig originally set to star. The film is based on the DC Comics character created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, who first appeared in Our Army at War in 1959.
Sgt. Franklin John Rock is a highly skilled World War II soldier known for his sharpshooting and grenade-throwing abilities. The character recently appeared in the Dcu animated series Creature Commandos, voiced by Maury Sterling.
Soon after the announcement, it’s been rumored that Daniel Craig passed on the role but Peter Safran and James Gunn clarified that Craig was never officially involved. He explained that Craig’s name was considered because he had worked with director Luca Guadagnino on Queer, but no meetings ever took place.

It's official: a Teen Titans movie for the DC Universe is in the works. DC Studios co-CEOs Peter Safran and James Gunn confirmed that Ana Nogueira is writing a Teen Titans movie during a recent press event for the studio.
Per Variety, Safran let slip that reports of a Teen Titans movie were true after a reporter asked about the status of Nogueira's screenplay. "The script’s not ready yet. I mean, I think we said that Ana Nogueira is writing it," the DC head said, leading Gunn to remark, "We haven’t said that." The back-and-forth exchange continued with Safran stating, "No, I think it was out there," with Gunn replying, "It’s out there," implying that DC Studios had never officially confirmed the reports until now. "It was something that Ana was really impassioned about, and she turned over an amazing script for us," said Gunn about how the project came to be.

DC Studios has confirmed that a Sgt. Rock movie is in the works for the DC Universe. The confirmation came after studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran were asked about Daniel Craig's departure from the World War II movie.
Per Variety, Gunn and Safran recently held a press event for DC Studios' upcoming film and television slate. When the topic of Craig exiting Sgt. Rock came up; Safran clarified that the James Bond actor "was never attached" to the movie, so he couldn't have dropped out. The DC head went on to explain that the actor had merely been floated as a possible candidate for the role due to having just appeared in Sgt. Rock director Luca Guadagnino's previous film, Queer. "But, you know, we never met with Daniel. He was just an idea," Safran said, with Gunn adding, "Well, we never really even announced Sgt. Rock.

For many, Daniel Craig is the ultimate James Bond—a suave, tough, and incredibly skilled spy who captivated audiences for over a decade. After saying goodbye to the iconic role in 2021, Craig has been exploring a variety of projects, showing off his versatility as an actor. One of his more unexpected choices was the period romantic drama Queer (2024), which took a different turn from his action-packed past. But what really had fans buzzing recently was the news of Craig potentially stepping into the DC Universe.
The British actor was rumored to be joining forces with director Luca Guadagnino and screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes for Sgt. Rock, is an adaptation of the classic DC Comics character. Excitement was through the roof as fans imagined Craig trading in his sleek Bond persona for the rugged war hero.

James Bond actor Daniel Craig was set to make his debut in a DC Studios project, marking a first for the accomplished actor, but that's no longer the case. Now, he will become the latest of several action stars to miss out on playing the iconic DC Comics character Sgt. Rock.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Craig has exited Sgt. Rock, a feature film in development at DC Studios based on the war hero made popular by DC Comics. Craig was set to play Sgt. Rock, and the casting would have reunited him with director Luca Guadagnino, with whom he worked with on the recent movie Queer. The Sgt. Rock film is written by Justin Kuritzkes, who also wrote Guadagnino's Queer and Challengers.

DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently delved into the fate of Clayface in Creature Commandos. This comes after Creature Commandos star Indira Varma touched upon the Bride's Dcu future following the Season 1 finale.
Gunn brought this subject up over on Bluesky, professing to an inquiring fan, "The reports of Clayface's death have been greatly exaggerated. He is quite mushy though." Putting the spotlight on Creature Commandos itself, Warner Bros. Animation executive producer Rick Morales and EVP of special programming Peter Giarardi delved into how Creature Commandos balances its characters in October, with Girardi avowing at the time that there's "a lot of humor in this at the same time, and there's a lot of pathos," because one does get glimpses into who each of these characters are, going on to further note that once one does come around, it's very touching "in the same way The Guardians [of the Galaxy] was."

Creature Commandos not only kicked off the Dcu in spectacular fashion with a new cast of great characters, but it also did an exceptional job establishing a lived-in fictional universe. In addition to the great cast of characters that made up the Creature Commandos, it also introduced teases for plenty of other DC characters on the horizon. Batman, Wonder Woman, and Sgt. Rock were just a few names teased in a seven-episode animated series. Yet, one DC character, or characters, that Creature Commandos teased might be fulfilling a planned DC adaptation that has been in development at Warner Bros. for over a decade. It actually predates the Dcu's predecessor, the Dceu's first entry, Man of Steel. The characters in question are the Metal Men.
The Metal Men might not be DC's most famous team of heroes, but like The Guardians of the Galaxy at Marvel, they certainly have big-screen potential.

In his first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2013's Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn proved that a good soundtrack can be as crucial to a movie as any other element. The film's carefully selected array of '60s and '70s pop hits breathed new life into decades-old songs and provided a crucial piece of character for protagonist Peter Quill. He repeated the trick in the 2017 sequel and the 2023 threequel, proving that a good soundtrack isn't just about providing background music, but can speak to the inner lives of the characters and the world of the film.
Now, over a decade since debuting Peter Quill's "Awesome Mix," Gunn has brought that keen skill for needle drops to his new role as creative head of the Dcu. This is on full display in the Dcu's first official project, Max's animated series Creature Commandos, which features a rich playlist...

The DC Universe's first official release has only increased the pressure on James Gunn's Superman, but the film still has a lot going for it. James Gunn's Superman movie is set for release in July 2025 and marks the true beginning of the Dcu's overarching story. Superman is the first movie in the Dcu's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters and, as such, is looking to kickstart the franchise into an age of cinematic storytelling that has been absent from DC for a long while.
Superman's cast of characters is expected to establish the foundations of the franchise, but it is the film's writer and director that faces the most pressure. Gunn's Superman must achieve all of these elements to be deemed a success, all while performing well enough commercially to warrant the complete restart of the DC Universe. Despite the debut season of Creature Commandos coming to an end, star Maria Bakalova revealed her anxieties about voice acting in the Max series. She portrayed the morally complex Princess Ilana Rostovic, the acting monarch of Pokolistan who Task Force M is sent to protect.
In an appearance on Collider Ladies Night, Bakalova stated:

Creature Commandos has been an excellent start for James Gunn's Dcu. Throughout the series, viewers have been given a hint of a fully lived-in DC Universe with a rich history that stretches far beyond the story's events. It draws from real-world history and the rich legacy of DC Comics as a publishing institution, tapping into an important part of the superhero stories that sometimes get overlooked. Creature Commandos Episode 3, "Cheers to the Tin Man," explored the origin of the character G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn), a military android designed to kill Nazis who seemingly struggled following World War II.
The episode showed G.I. Robot's time-serving alongside Sgt. Rock and the boys of Easy Company, possibly setting up Luca Gugagino's Sgt. Rock feature film also shows a superhero fighting in World War II, a significant part of the early dawn of the superhero genre. With Creature Commandos also taking...

Quick Links Was Doctor Phosphorus the First Foe Batman Faced in the Dcu? It Can't Be Robert Pattinson in the Dcu The Dcu Batman Must Be in His Late 40's or Early 50's
There has been much talk about Batman's role in the Dcu recently. It seems like nobody can give a straight answer on whether Matt Reeves's version of Batman, played by Robert Pattinson, will remain in its own universe or folded into the wider Dcu, or if Andy Muschettit's announced Brave and the Bold Batman-led film is still in the works and if it was delayed or not. Creature Commandos provided two brief teases of Batman, one in a vision of the future where he and other Dcu heroes were killed, and another in a flashback for the villain Doctor Phosphorus.

Creature Commandos just wrapped up its first season on Max, marking the (sort of) first official entry in the new Dcu overseen by James Gunn. The seven-episode season offered everything fans could want from a Gunn-penned DC project, with plenty of over-the-top violence, smartass humor, and character development that humanized its inhuman antiheroes. So how did Gunn and the team wrap up the season, and where does the ending leave the characters?

The James Gunn-penned series not only introduces viewers to a new set of characters in Task Force M, but it also features connections to other parts of the DC Universe. Creature Commandos builds on the events of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, while its antagonist Circe (Anya Chalotra) is best known as one of Wonder Woman's fiercest foes. Creature Commandos: James Gunn Talks Sgt. Rock's Dcu Debut And Teases Future Plans For The Metal Men
In this week's episode of Creature Commandos (you can read our full recap here), we learned that G.I. Robot served alongside Sgt. Rock and Easy Company during World War II.
Challengers director Luca Guadagnino is expected to helm a Sgt. Rock movie starring Daniel Craig, though Maury Sterling (Homeland) lends his voice to the character in this animated series. While DC Studios plans to have the same actors take on their respective roles across animation and live-action, that only applies to major parts and leaves the door open to Craig, for example, taking over in a feature.
In a new interview, Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey explained why he wanted Easy Company to make an appearance in the show.
"One of the reasons we wanted to include them is because it's one of G.I. Robot's most favourite memories," he said. "When he's asked who his friends are, it's the boys from Easy Company.

The third episode of Creature Commandos reveals G.I. Robot's origin story by taking us back to World War II. Joining Easy Company, he saves the day by gunning down countless Nazis much to the delight of his fellow soldiers.

The Platform 2's storyline is unique in more ways than one, but viewers looking for something similar still have a wide range of thrillers to choose from. Serving as a prequel to Netflix's The Platform, The Platform 2 unfolds in a vertical prison system like its predecessor. The primary driving force behind the movie's narrative is a floating platform that lowers down from one level of the prison to another, carrying food for the inmates. However, when some prisoners from the upper levels act selfishly and eat way more than they deserve, an intense power struggle ensues in the system.
In many ways, The Platform 2 serves as a solid allegory for both trickle-down economics and the downsides of communism. At the same time, with its character beats, the movie also dabbles with other relatable themes surrounding grief, identity, morality, and acceptance of one's past. While both The Platform...

Spoilers ahead for "Coherence."
There are movies often cited as being confusing or mind-melting, like "Inception" or "Memento," which really aren't that complicated. Then there's something like "Primer," which requires detailed diagrams and hours-long YouTube explainers to begin to unravel its web of twists and turns. Sitting happily in the middle is James Ward Byrkit's "Coherence," one of the best sci-fi films of the past decade and a movie that is complex and mild-melting yet not so complex that it's hard to follow.
The film begins with an alluring premise of four couples meeting at a friend's house for dinner on the night a comet is passing by the Earth. While they all have messy relationships to navigate, the comet causes quantum decoherence, creating split realities and allowing the guests' alternate selves to intrude into their reality, and vice-versa. It's a concept that allows for plenty of twists while also allowing for simplicity,...

This post contains spoilers for "Coherence."
One night, during the passing of Miller's comet, reality ends up branching into little dimensions. This inexplicable phenomenon creates various versions of eight friends, whose interconnected lives are altered forever with the haphazard merging of these pocket-realities. Before long, chaos descends: car windows are smashed and ominous notes wind up near the front door, all while the confused group desperately attempts to hold on to their identities. While these events form the core of James Ward Byrkit's mind-bogglingly brilliant "Coherence," the film's ending makes it clear that this is a story about one specific person in the group: Emily (Emily Foxler). After Emily goes through the harrowing experience of wandering through every pocket-reality towards the end, she stumbles upon one where she can finally be happy. However, this chain of actions demands a heavy price.

A decade ago, director James Ward Byrkit brought us a surreal, Twilight Zone-ish sci-fi thriller called Coherence (watch it Here), which JoBlo’s own Eric Walkuski gave an 8/10 review you can read at This Link. Now Deadline has revealed that Byrkit and It’s What’s Inside producer Kate Andrews are teaming up to develop a follow-up of some sort to Coherence! As Deadline notes, “Plot details are being kept under lock and key — including whether the new film will be a prequel, sequel, or a different story entirely.”
Byrkit crafted the story for the first film with Alex Manugian, coming up with the following set-up: Eight friends at a dinner party experience a troubling chain of events due to the malevolent influence of a passing comet.
Coherence starred Emily Foxler, who now goes by Emily Baldoni (Five Feet Apart), Maury Sterling (Smokin’ Aces), Nicholas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Seeking a Friend for the End of the World...

On "Star Trek: Enterprise," the character of Ensign Hoshi Sato, played by actress Linda Park, served as the communications officer on board the titular ship. "Enterprise" takes place a century before the events of the original "Star Trek" series, so the franchise's notorious universal translator hadn't yet been refined, leaving human translators like Hoshi to fill in the gaps. Hoshi had a talent for xenolinguistics, but didn't quite have the constitution for long-range space missions or combat situations. She was young and inexperienced, and had to constantly face her anxieties head-on. As the show progressed, Hoshi came into her own, displaying more and more confidence.
The problem with characters that can be defined as "young and inexperienced" is that eventually they will have to become adult and experienced. They will then require other character traits to define them ... and TV writers don't always think that far ahead. Many of the...

The other night, I had a hankering to watch a good high-concept movie I'd never seen before. I saw 2014's "Coherence" on a few lists, and being almost wholly unfamiliar with it, I decided to fire it up and give it a shot. Thankfully, this film gave me exactly what I was looking for.
Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Elizabeth Gracen, Alex Manugian, Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong, and eventual "Hustlers" director Lorene Scafaria star in this ultra-low budget brain melter about a group of friends gathering for a dinner party while a comet passes by overhead. When the power goes out, a couple of them trek up the street to a neighboring house with the lights on -- only to discover something that shakes them to their core. I won't get into the specifics here, but the film has an incredible conceit, and director James Ward Byrkit, who shot...

Exclusive: Writer-director Kyle Hausmann-Stokes has continued rounding out an impressive cast for his debut feature, the dark veteran dramedy My Dead Friend Zoe, bringing Morgan Freeman (The Shawshank Redemption), Gloria Reuben (Mr. Robot) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Brittany Runs a Marathon) aboard for roles.
The film delving into the lives of military veterans, to highlight both their triumphs and challenges upon returning home, will have the trio starring alongside the previously announced Ed Harris, Sonequa Martin-Green and Natalie Morales.
Written by Hausmann-Stokes and A.J. Bermudez, My Dead Friend Zoe is based on Merit x Zoe, a short that Hausmann-Stokes co-wrote and directed last year, which draws on his personal experience during and after the military, as a Bronze Star combat veteran. The film tells the story of a female veteran (Martin-Green) engaged in a mysterious but comfortable friendship with her wise-cracking (and dead) best friend from the Army (Morales). When the...

Although it may be more obscure than its predecessor, Smokin' Aces 2 has already happened. Written and directed by Joe Carnahan of The A-Team fame, Smokin' Aces has an ensemble cast including Ryan Reynolds, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman, Common, Alicia Key, Chris Pine, and Matthew Fox. Set in Lake Tahoe, the movie revolves around a Vegas-based magician named Buddy Israel, who faces the wrath of Mob boss Primo Sparazza when he agrees to turn state's evidence against Sparazza's mob.
From a critical standpoint, Smokin' Aces performed poorly and, as of today, stands at a subpar rotten tomatoes score of 30%. However, the movie's revenue told a different story, given that it earned $57.3 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $17 million. Even its earnings from DVDs, which mounted up to $35,714,831, were no less impressive considering how they were more than double the movie's budget. Owing to its impressive box office returns,...

There’s no place like home: After being absent from the Critics’ Choice Awards for eight years, Claire Danes staged a surprising return to the TV drama actress lineup for “Homeland’s” eighth and final season. Now, can she go one step further and parlay her comeback into a farewell victory?
Even though the actress bagged five consecutive drama actress Emmy Award bids (2012-16) for the Showtime series and scored wins for the first two seasons, she’d only shown up twice at Critics’ Choice before this year: in 2012, when she won, and ’13, when she lost to Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”). This makes her return eight years later all the more remarkable, not least because she did not accrue a final Emmy nom.
As of this writing, she sits in sixth place in our combined odds, trailing Emma Corrin (“The Crown”), Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Jurnee Smollett (“Lovecraft Country”), Olivia Colman...

Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin both earned their first Emmy nominations in 1995 — Danes for “My So-Called Life” in Best Drama Actress and Patinkin for “Chicago Hope” in Best Drama Actor — and have since accrued six additional acting bids apiece. They could each collect their eighth career noms for “Homeland’s” eighth and final season, in Best Drama Actress and Best Drama Supporting Actor, respectively. Can they pull it off? Let’s dive into their chances.

Batwoman has spent most of its season playing around with villains primarily specific to Kate Kane and her world. The show often alludes to some of the biggest, most recognizable Batman villains associated with her more famous cousin, but it hasn’t waded into bringing any of them to the screen. And really, most attempts at traditional “villain of the week” stuff would just be overshadowed by the brilliance of Rachel Skarsten’s Alice anyway. But that’s about to change next week when Tommy Elliot goes full Hush.
That’s right, Gabriel Mann is about to return as Tommy Elliot, but this time with a face full of bandages and a trenchcoat. In other words, Tommy Elliot is now Hush. And really, he couldn’t possibly look any cooler than he does here. This is a significant upgrade from the Tommy Elliot we met in Batwoman episode 3, “Down, Down,...

The idea that Showtime’s “Homeland” is drawing to an end after eight seasons hasn’t quite sunken in yet for executive producer Lesli Linka Glatter.

This Sunday, the final season of “Homeland” will finally arrive. Stars Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin, showrunner Alex Gansa, and a lucky hundred or so of the rest of us got to see it Tuesday at the world premiere, which was held at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
The after-party played out at the Lobster Club, a few long city blocks over. For a “Homeland” fan, the evening was about as good as Tuesdays get. For so many former “Homeland” stars, it was a homecoming.
Below are a few of our non-spoilery takeaways from the nice-enough February night in Manhattan.
