In the early 2000s, Stephen Johnston penned a series of indie horror movies chronicling the true crimes of serial killers, including Ed Gein, Ted Bundy, The Hillside Strangler, and Starkweather.

Johnston returns to familiar territory with Ed Kemper, which he co-wrote with director Chad Ferrin.

The film tells the chilling true story of Edmund Kemper, a manipulative serial killer known as The Co-Ed Killer whose charm hid a dark obsession with murder, revenge, and his tormented past.

Brandon Kirk stars as Kemper, who murdered his grandparents at age 15 and, after being paroled for the crime, killed eight women — including his mother — between 1972 and 1973.

Susan Priver, Brinke Stevens (The Slumber Party Massacre), Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Robert Miano (Donnie Brasco), and Cassandra Gava (Conan the Barbarian) round out the cast.

Forty-two years ago, actor Michael Villella (whose last name was sometimes spelled Villela in credits) made his screen acting debut in the classic slasher The Slumber Party Massacre. He went on to earn several more acting credits over the years – and today, we have to share the sad news that Villella has passed away at the age of 84.

As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, news of Villella’s passing first emerged on Facebook, on both his own profile and his daughter Chloe’s. According to TMZ, he died due to multiple organ failure after spending over a month in the hospital.

Another remake of William Castle’s horror classic House on Haunted Hill is on the way, and Bloody Disgusting has learned that Daniel Roebuck (Terrifier 3) has signed on.

Director Dustin Ferguson (Spider Baby) is in production now on the remake of the classic horror film House on Haunted Hill, which of course got its first remake back in 1999.

Victoria Price, daughter of horror legend Vincent Price, is executive producing the new take and will also star. Principal photography is expected to wrap this month.

The Asylum's upcoming film, The Exorcists, is a "mockbuster" that cleverly incorporates the villain from the Hellraiser franchise, Doug Bradley. Other horror stars, such as Scream Queen Michelle Bauer, are joining the cast of The Exorcists, adding to the film's appeal. The Exorcists is set to be released on September 29 digitally and will also have a limited theatrical run in selected venues.

If only Doug Bradley could portray Pinhead in The Exorcists. The Asylum, which is the studio masterminds behind the Sharknado phenomenon, is at it again. However, this time their latest exploitation efforts, also known as a “mockbuster,” clearly focuses on The Exorcist (1973). Jack Hill’s 1967 cult classic horror movie Spider Baby is getting a remake from filmmaker Dustin Ferguson (Cocaine Cougar, Mega Ape), and we’ve learned today that the film will be premiering on Halloween night. At The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana, CA on October 31, fans will have their very first chance to see the new take on the maddest story ever told.

The red carpet, general admission premiere is taking place at 6pm, and the special screening will include Director Introduction, Cast/Crew Q&a, plus a Merch table.

Director Jack Hill’s 1967 film Spider Baby or, the Maddest Story Ever Told (watch it Here) – which boasts a cast that includes Lon Chaney Jr. and Sid Haig – ranks up there as one of my all-time favorites. Rob Zombie clearly took some inspiration from Spider Baby when he was making House of 1000 Corpses, and back in 2007 we heard that a remake was in the works, coming from the Night of the Living Dead 3D team of director Jeff Broadstreet and writer Robert Valding. The one didn’t end up making it into production… but now, sixteen years later, another attempt to remake Spider Baby has been made. And this one has just wrapped filming!

Jack Hill’s 1967 cult classic horror movie Spider Baby is getting a remake from filmmaker Dustin Ferguson, and Bloody Disgusting has learned this week that filming has now wrapped on the upcoming remake that’s “set to captivate audiences with a thrilling blend of nostalgia and modern twists.”

The team explains, “The new film promises to reimagine the beloved cult film – which starred Sid Haig and Lon Chaney Jr. – for a new generation of horror enthusiasts.”

The film is currently in post-production, with a premiere planned for this October in L.A. While you wait, Bloody Disgusting debuts the first official teaser trailer today, found below.

The original film’s director, Jack Hill, served as the Executive Producer for this brand new project, “ensuring a respectful homage to the 1967 cult classic.”

Additionally, Beverly Washburn, a notable presence from the original Spider Baby as “Elizabeth,” returns to the film in a new role.

The Etheria Film Festival, a showcase of new horror, science fiction, and fantasy films directed by women, turns 10 this year, and they’re celebrating accordingly. And Bloody Disgusting can exclusively unveil what’s in store for this year’s fest, along with a sneak peek trailer.

The annual festivities will kick off with a live event in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at the Screenland Armour Theater with filmmakers and special guests in person for an onstage Q and A followed by an official afterparty. If you’re not able to attend in person, don’t worry; Etheria reteams with Shudder this year, and the official festival lineup will stream exclusively on the streaming service from July 2 through July 31, 2023.

Did you know Friday the 13th director Sean S. Cunningham made a The Thing knock-off starring Bruce Campbell for the Sci-Fi Channel? It’s called Terminal Invasion, and it’s coming to Blu-ray on April 25 from Kino Lorber.

The 2002 sci-fi thriller is written by Lewis Abernathy (DeepStar Six), John Jarrell (Romeo Must Die), and Robinson Young. Chase Masterson and C. David Johnson co-star. Harry Manfredini (Friday the 13th) composed the score.

Special features include an audio commentary by Cunningham and executive producer Chuck Simon and an Alien Costume Test featurette. It comes with a slipcover.

Back in 2019, it was announced that Full Moon was developing a sequel to the 1988 cult classic Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama (watch it Here), with Slimeball director David DeCoteau returning to the helm for Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama 2 and co-directing the film with legendary scream queen Brinke Stevens. Stevens played a character named Taffy in the original film. The sequel was slowed down a bit by the pandemic, but production is officially underway now – and while it’s not clear if DeCoteau still has a hand in the project, we can say for sure that Stevens is directing the film. Axeman at Cutters Creek is a pretty great name for a horror movie so I’m not sure why this has been changed to Axeman: Redux. Although I know it will probably be a low budget affair, it still manages to conjure up images of classic eighties slashers with great death scenes and great gore. All this from the title alone, at least for me.

And the opening scene keeps in with that spirit. Very much feeling like a tribute to those eighties horror movies. Unfortunately it never manages to get to the heights of any classics, in fact it shares more in common with the eighties horror that is not so fondly remembered.
