A show that focuses on the fairly conventional premise of a group of kids, a stern mom, and a bumbling dad doesn't necessarily have what it takes to become a smash hit. However, the stars certainly aligned for "Malcolm in the Middle." The show premiered in 2000 and ran for a solid seven seasons before concluding in May 2006. If you've never seen the show and only know the basic premise, it's easy to assume that the series simply rode the coattails of the 1990s sitcom high to success ... but as anyone familiar with the series can attest, you don't make it to season 7 without being a pretty watchable sitcom, which "Malcolm in the Middle" certainly was.
One of the show's secrets is casting. The pre-Walter White Bryan Cranston was so convincingly hilarious as the slapstick-happy father Hal that he nearly lost "Breaking Bad" over a certain "Malcolm in the Middle" scene.

Everyone knows sliced bread is the best thing to happen since Betty White. The iconic television star gained massive acclaim and fame with her role in The Golden Girls, and she filled her later acting career with countless cameos. Her inimitable presence brought immense charm and humor to any show.
One such cameo happened in 2004 when she appeared in Malcolm in the Middle. As expected from Betty White, the character oozes a mix of passion, wit, and talent. She shines brighter than everyone whenever she appears, and her appeal is as much her star power as her talent. To be more precise, Betty White pops up as Sylvia in the twentieth episode of Season 5, “Victor’s Other Family.” The episode debuted on May 9, 2004, and marked the series’ 105th entry.

Family sitcom The Middle was a massive hit for ABC throughout its nine-season run. Despite the show experiencing a resurgence in popularity, Patricia Heaton, who played matriarch Frances Heck, recently shot down the possibility of a reboot.
"The way they wrapped it up, where we got to flash-forward in the lives of the Heck family and see where they all ended up, it was so beautiful, and I think people have such a good feeling about the show," she told Yahoo! Entertainment. "The Middle is having such a resurgence on TikTok, of all places, that kids are rediscovering or discovering it for the first time. It's a beautiful thing."

Malcolm in the Middle owes its cult appeal to its endearing (and dysfunctional) characters. Lead star Frankie Muniz reflected on the show’s run and singled out its worst protagonist.
Frankie Muniz said he finally watched Malcolm in the Middle's entire run in 2017, 11 years after the series finale aired. He watched all the episodes with his wife and came to a sobering realization: his character Malcolm was the worst in the series. "[My wife] looked at me at the very end and she goes, 'You weren't acting at all. You are literally Malcolm,'" he told People. "And I'm like, 'I don't know how to take that because Malcolm sucked.' He was the worst character on that show!" Muniz's hot take just settled an ongoing debate since fans are divided between Hal, Malcolm, and Francis.

Halina Reijn's Babygirl represents an erotic thriller that explores the balance of power and sexuality as a professional high-ranking CEO, portrayed by Nicole Kidman, engages in a forbidden affair with a younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson. The director has said that some of her inspiration for the film was the psychosexual thrillers of the '80s and '90s from directors like Paul Verhoeven and Adrian Lyne.
It's fitting then that after a trip to see Babygirl, moviegoers should revisit Lyne's 2002 erotic thriller, Unfaithful. While the director is known more for his Oscar-nominated hits Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal, Unfaithful's simplicity, as it explores a woman's need for the excitement that she seems to be missing, is its biggest strength.

Malcolm in The Middle will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025, having premiered in 2000 as part of the Fox TV network’s iconic Sunday night lineup. Recently, its all-grown-up star Frankie Muniz, who played the titular Malcolm in all 151 sitcom episodes, per CinemaBlend, talked about his favorite and most memorable moments from the show on the Inside of You podcast.
Even though Malcolm in the Middle finished its seven-season run in 2006, the memory of shooting the series finale was still fresh in Muniz’s mind. “Favorite memory honestly was the last shot that we filmed and only because - I remember being sad the show was ending, right? But also excited because I was ready for whatever the future was gonna have to hold. And, at that point, I knew I was going to do racing and all that,” said the actor, who, after the series ended, went on to race...

Malcolm In The Middle is back for a four episode sequel series for Disney+, and details of the return are right here.

Jamie Lee Curtis starred in the 2004 Christmas comedy Christmas With The Kranks, and a very convincing theory suggests that it’s actually a horror movie. The branch of Christmas movies is home to a variety of stories from different genres and for different audiences, though most aim at a family-friendly tone, such as Christmas With The Kranks. Directed by Joe Roth and based on the 2001 novel Skipping Christmas by John Grisham, Christmas With The Kranks introduces the audience to Nora (Curtis) and Luther Krank (Tim Allen), whose daughter, Blair (Julie Gonzalo), is leaving for a Peace Corps assignment.
As a result, she’s spending Christmas away from home for the first time, which Nora isn’t taking well. Seeing how it affects Nora not having Blair home for Christmas, Luther suggests they go on a Caribbean cruise instead, thus skipping Christmas. Frankie Muniz reveals his television father, Bryan Cranston, still keeps in touch with him to this very day. The duo starred as father and son for seven seasons on the beloved television series, Malcolm in the Middle (2000-2006). And Muniz, who was recently signed as a racer for NASCAR’s 2025 Craftsman Truck Series season, fondly spoke about his "incredible" Malcolm costar on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast. Muniz said:
"He still reaches out to me every couple of weeks [and] checks in on me. He really cares about what I'm doing. [He] comes to the races. When my band was playing, [he] came to shows. I mean, he's such an inspiration. And like I said, that's what I strive to be that for someone else in the future."

Malcolm in the Middle star Frankie Muniz was recently involved in an accident during a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Championship Race in Phoenix, and he could be seen limping to get himself into an ambulance after emerging from the wrecked vehicle. Fortunately, the actor is going to be okay.
The crash happened on Friday, and it was a multi-truck pile-up involving Muniz and other vehicles. Though the accident itself looked devastating, no one involved was seriously injured. In a video posted online of the aftermath of the crash, Muniz can be seen standing on his own power, though he doubles over at one point, seemingly in great pain. When an ambulance pulls up, Muniz has two others standing by to assist him, though he's able to get to the back himself by walking with a limp.
Hard hit for @frankiemuniz. He limps from his truck to the ambulance. #NASCAR pic.

Erik Per Sullivan played Dewey in Malcolm in the Middle, but the actor hasn't been seen on screen in a long time. 17 years after Malcolm in the Middle ended, its still hailed as one of the best sitcoms of all time. The series owes a big part of its success to the talented actors who play its delightfully dysfunctional family. Malcolm in the Middle made stars out of several of its cast members. However, Sullivan left the acting business shortly after leaving the role of Dewy in Malcolm in the Middle behind.
Dewey was the youngest child for much of the series and an important aspect of the strange household, along with brothers Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) and Reese (Justin Berfield) as well as parents Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) and Hal (Bryan Cranston). Sullivan earned acclaim for his role as the eccentric youngest son and was nominated for two Young Artist Awards.

"The Golden Girls" is basically the perfect sitcom, following the antics of four mature women who share a house in Miami, Florida. The series began in September 1985 and ran for seven seasons before ending in May 1992, and it's only grown in popularity since it first aired. It's a blast to tune in to see what the hilariously horny Blanche (Rue McClanahan), bubbly airhead Rose (Betty White), sarcastic divorcee Dorothy (Bea Arthur), and her smart-mouthed mother Sophia (Estelle Getty) get up to in each episode, and it's pretty easy to hit play on one and end up watching an entire season before you know it. It's really no surprise that the series has found new fans in the streaming era, so when there were rumors of a Disney+ reboot of the series sometime in 2024, people went bonkers.

Directed by Adrian Lyne, the erotic thriller, Unfaithful, is one of the most poetic, authentic, and devastating contemporary films about an extramarital affair. The story follows a couple living in the suburbs of Manhattan, Connie Sumner (Diane Lane) and her husband, Edward Sumner (Richard Gere), with their young son, Charlie Sumner (Erik Per Sullivan). There is no overt tension in the marriage, but in studying the complexities of personal gratifications and eros, Lyne understands it is within these contexts, appearing unabridged and seamless, where a story finds its depth.

For decades, sitcoms ruled mainstream television. Situational comedies appealed to the masses, and using laugh tracks to signal when a punchline was delivered was the norm. In the last 25 years, there has been a shift in the way sitcoms are made, and now it's quite common for comedies to forgo laugh tracks, leading to more organic interactions between the actors.
Sitcoms without laugh tracks are inherently bolder and tend to pull fewer punches in their jokes, the ethics of their characters, or the vulgarity of their plots. While some sitcoms without laugh tracks are appropriate for kids, this style mostly caters to older audiences, whereas family-oriented sitcoms still rely on laugh tracks.

In the age of reboots and revivals, Scrubs could be the next TV series from the past to return. Creator Bill Lawrence has confirmed his plans sto bring back the show, confidently noting that it's "definitely" going to happen.
Per LadBible, Lawrence recently addressed the possibility of a Scrubs revival. Fans wanting to see this happen may be even more excited to hear that Lawrence is eager to get the ball rolling, suggesting it could be getting started within the next several months. As far as what the revival would be like, Lawrence confirmed he'd rather do another ongoing series rather than a simple reunion movie or special. However, while he wants to feature legacy characters, the new Scrubs series would also likely introduce younger cast members.

Former child star Erik Per Sullivan was one of television's most familar faces during Malcolm in the Middle's run on television. With his role as Dewey, the younger sibling of Frankie Muniz's titular character, Sullivan shined as one of the show's fan favorites.
After Malcolm in the Middle ended its run in 2006, Sullivan would only act very sporadically before disappearing from the public eye following his last role in 2010. Fans have often wondered what became of the former actor following his quiet retirement, and Jane Kaczmarek, who played Dewey's mother Lois, has confirmed that Sullivan is doing "very, very well." She also shared that he's been attending a "very prestigious" university, though she can't say which one, per Sullivan's request. Kaczmarek also pointed out that Sullivan was just not interested in show business, realizing early in life that it wasn't for him and that it wasn't what he wanted to spend his life doing.

In the incredible series finale of Malcolm in the Middle, the viewers (and Malcolm) learned that the titular boy genius was destined to become the greatest, hardest-working and most empathetic president in American history while his brother Dewey will live a life of luxury. To Dewey, luxury means a life spent in study of Charles Dickens.
Everyone who watched Malcolm in the Middle during the aughts knows that Dewey was not-so-secretly one of the smartest characters in the entire show. Malcolm in the Middle's chaotic family dynamics shine in each tightly-written, funny episode. "conic moments and memorable characters make Malcolm in the Middle a must-watch for sitcom fans. The blend of humor, social commentary, and family values in Malcolm in the Middle is unmatched.
The best Malcolm in the Middle episodes show why it's still so highly regarded despite finishing almost two decades ago. Malcolm in the Middle' 151 episodes ran from 2000 to 2006 — and each was a tightly-written, fast-paced, darkly comedic assault on sitcom traditions. Malcolm in the Middle followed the lower-middle class lives of boy genius Malcolm Wilkerson (Frankie Muniz), his mother Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), his father Hal (Bryan Cranston), and Malcolm's brothers Francis (Christopher Kennedy Masterson), Reese (Justin Berfield), and Dewey (Erik Per Sullivan).
Though Malcolm in the Middle is told mainly from the perspective of its titular protagonist, the show's sheer absurdity took it well beyond conventional 2000s sitcom storytelling.

Malcolm in the Middle revival is closer than ever, with the cast discussing the possibility of a return after 18 years. Frankie Muniz emphasizes the importance of doing a potential revival justice. A revival offers endless possibilities for revisiting the characters and exploring where they are as adults.
Frankie Muniz has provided a hugely encouraging update on the development of the long-rumored Malcolm in the Middle revival, saying that it is now “the closest it's ever been.” In an interview with Pedestrian TV, Muniz, who starred as the titular Malcolm throughout all seven seasons of Malcolm in the Middle, cannot believe there is still so much interest in the sitcom’s return, but would love to explore where the characters are all these years later.
"Without giving away too much because there's nothing confirmed, but it's the closest it's ever been to being a reality. If it's going to happen, it'll happen soon.

Jane Kaczmarek was a core part of Malcolm in the Middle during its entire run, portraying the mother of four (later five) sons. In Malcolm in the Middle's fourth season, Kaczmarek had to take a brief leave of absence due to her pregnancy. To accommodate her real-life pregnancy, the series wrote in that the family would be adding another addition to the family with a fifth child.

Malcolm's siblings and parents in Malcolm in the Middle display their own unique forms of intelligence that rival Malcolm's. Dewey's musical ability and creativity surpass Malcolm's, as seen when Malcolm asks him for help with music homework. Each member of the Wilkerson family, including Jamie, Reese, and Hal, exhibits their own special talents and smarts throughout the show.
Despite Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) being the clear genius of his family in Malcolm in the Middle, there were also some great moments that proved that his siblings and parents were just as smart as him. The hit sitcom had a 7-season run before coming to an end in 2006, as Malcolm headed off to Harvard, with all of his hard work finally paying off. Despite his departure, Malcolm in the Middle's Wilkerson family home was still bustling, with Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) and Hal (Bryan Cranston) discovering they were expecting baby number six.

Ever since the sitcom genre took shape, a colorful and inventive subgenre followed suit. Sitcoms focusing exclusively on the dynamics of the nuclear American family, from Married...with Children to The Simpsons, became as commonplace as game shows.
Although this subgenre maintained prominence throughout the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, an evolution was taking place that allowed the family sitcom to blossom into something much more unique. As it turns out, the best family sitcoms were never about typical families.

A memorable TV character stands out for their personality and actions, becoming more memorable than the show they came from. Characters like Saul Goodman, Red Forman, and Dewey Wilkerson are still well-remembered for their impact and distinctive traits. Michael Scott from The Office redefined the meaning of cringe and remains one of the best-known TV characters, even after the show's end.
A good TV show comes from a collaborative effort, both on and off-screen, but some shows see a character immortalized outside of their original show due to sheer popularity. The best TV characters of all time stick out for many reasons, such as quotable dialogue or a strong performance, to the point that the character becomes more memorable than the show they originally came from. That said, at a time when so many stories are being told in film and TV, it takes a lot for a character to stick in audiences' minds.

Malcolm in the Middle remains one of the best sitcoms of all time, aging well and still as hilarious in 2023 as it was when it first aired. The show addressed relatable issues such as discipline struggles, money problems, managing a growing family, and in-law tensions within a working-class family. Its set of supporting characters was great, each of whom provided something different for the show.
A staple in noughties sitcoms, Malcolm in the Middle may have ended 17 years ago, but the family-focused comedy is still as relevant today. Malcolm in the Middle aired from 2000 to 2006 and joined the Wilkerson family for 151 jam-packed episodes filled with fast-paced and intelligent humor for all. Unlike traditional sitcoms, Malcolm in the Middle was unique for its use of breaking the fourth wall and Malcolm's acknowledgment of the audience. Almost two decades later, it is still considered one of the best sitcoms of all time.

This article contains spoilers for the final episode of Malcolm in the Middle.
Besides animated series, there are very few sitcoms which maintain a consistent level of hilarity with every beat of comic timing. No matter what point you turn on Malcolm in the Middle, any episode, something will make you laugh within 18 seconds. I’m not talking giggles or chuckles, but full-out guffaws that make you miss the next six jokes.
Other shows may be more consistent in overall quality, but none match the stream of funny that comes out of the series created by Linwood Boomer, himself the third of four siblings who was placed in the “gifted” class at school. After graduating, Boomer acted on Little House on the Prairie, another show focusing on a middle child. The semi-autobiographical Malcolm in the Middle doesn’t just call for a second look. It screams for a repeat binge.

Emmy Award winner and celebrated actor Bryan Cranston has revealed that he is now working on a script for a Malcolm in the Middle revival. During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Cranston was asked how likely he thinks a Malcolm in the Middle return is, with the actor stating that, out of ten, he would give the likelihood of such a project a promising score.
"Yes, I would say that on a scale of 1-10, I'd say an 8 that we'll do a reunion, movie or show or something. And yes, we have been working on concepts of story, plots and things like that."
Lasting for seven seasons between 2000-2006, Malcolm in the Middle follows Frankie Muniz as the titular middle child, Malcolm, a somewhat normal teenager who tests at genius level, and his dysfunctional family. Made up of hot-headed, overbearing mother, Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), clumsy,...

“I’m curious about that family 20 years later,” said Cranston, explaining his interest in the project. “What happened to them? Where are they? What are the kids doing? They’re grown men now.”
But Cranston admitted that even now, more than 20 years later, he still misses his “Malcolm in the Middle” comrades “like crazy.”
“We had such a great family on that [show], and I certainly would be open to that if there was a good idea that came up like, ‘Oh, that would...

The popular and funny sitcom aired by Fox premiered in 2000 and ran for seven seasons and 151 episodes, ending in 2006. The story follows the Wilkersons, a typical American family going through day-to-day conflicts, from the perspective of one of his sons with a great intellectual development.
But the main focus of the show is how messy and chaotic the children of the family are, and their peculiar relationship with their eccentric father and their strict mother.
For several years now, the protagonists and creators of the show have fueled rumors of a possible continuation that could be turned into a movie, to tell a little more about the family's story.

"Yes. No. Maybe. I don’t know. Can you repeat the question?"
At the dawn of the 21st century, Malcolm in the Middle debuted on Fox. The popular, dark-humored television show — centered around the maladjusted Wilkerson family — represents the traditional middle-class American family home, equipped with its own set of problems.
Created by Linwood Boomer, it stars Jane Kaczmarek as the mother Lois, Bryan Cranston as the father Hal, and their five sons: Francis (Christopher Kennedy Masterson), Reese (Justin Berfield), Malcolm (Frankie Muniz), Dewey (Erik Per Sullivan), and Jamie (Lukas Rodriguez). The show’s titular character, Malcolm, an adolescent genius with an Iq of 165 and a photographic memory, consistently breaks the fourth wall, via both voice-over narration and addressing the viewer directly on camera, in an attempt to be more relatable.
After attracting widespread praise from critics and audiences alike, Malcolm in the Middle remained a popular but polarizing show...
