George & Tammy isn't likely going to have a second season, given the premise of the show and where it decided to end the story. George & Tammy premiered in December 2022, and the fantastic biopic tells the story of legendary country musicians, George Jones and Tammy Wynette, covering their relationship together as well as their careers. Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain star as the titular characters, being nominated and winning numerous awards for their respective performances. Alongside Chastain and Shannon were performances by Steve Zahn and Walton Goggins before his incredible role in Fallout.
Despite being well-received and featuring a pair of standout career performances from Shannon and Chastain, George & Tammy only ran for one season, and a total of six episodes on Showtime. With the series not following Tammy Wynette up to her tragic death, it was unclear if a second season would continue the story, but the...

While every major media outlet will suck up to major Hollywood stars because they need access to interviews and video clips for search engine optimization, I cannot ignore how Jake Gyllenhaal is woefully miscast in the role of Rusty Sabich. It becomes increasingly evident as the series progresses.

Sam Uley led the Quileute werewolf pack in La Push, but actor Chaske Spencer won’t reprise the role in Netflix’s upcoming animated Twilight series. It wouldn’t have been surprising not to see Sam on the show at first, since the intriguing Alpha didn’t make his first appearance until the second film, The Twilight Saga: New Moon. However, it’s clear now that Spencer won’t be voicing the character again, regardless. Spencer said in a new interview with TV Insider:
I’ll watch it. I’ll check it out. Yeah, I’ll look at it. I’m too old. I’m too old for Sam [laughed]. Even the voice… I think you can find a younger, better-in-shape actor to do that.

Apple TV+'s divisive period dramedy series Palm Royale has been renewed for a second season, and there are already a ton of exciting updates concerning season 2. Created for TV by Abe Sylvia (from the book Mr. & Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel), the series concerns wannabe socialite Maxine Dellacorte-Simmons (Kristen Wiig) as she tries to infiltrate the complicated social scene of 1960s Palm Beach, Florida. With its lavish costuming and set design, Palm Royale captured the stunning and over-the-top look of its period, while also offering a pointed critique of class and status in the United States.
Despite Palm Royale's stellar cast and heady ideas, the show was greeted with mixed reviews, and was hardly the critical darling that it was seemingly shaping up to be. Nevertheless, the sheer star power and intrigue of the show was enough to get plenty of people tuning in as it snagged 11 Emmy nominations in the process,...

The F-word is very important to Carol Burnett.
That is, at 91 years old, with 25 Emmy nominations, two Peabodys and a Presidential Medal of Freedom, she’s only looking for one thing when it comes to work: fun.
“It’s my F-word. If it looks like it’s going to be fun, I want to do it,” she says.
Burnett has spent more than seven decades making people laugh. One of the best physical comedians of all time, she did it again as Norma Dellacorte in Apple TV+’s 2024 comedy “Palm Royale,” about a social climber (Kristen Wiig) desperate for her aunt-by-marriage’s inheritance. Burnett plays the conniving aunt.
In the first three episodes, Burnett didn’t even have lines, since her character was in a coma. However, being immobile couldn’t hold her back from stealing every scene.
It seems nothing could. In 1958, she landed her first gig, as a supporting comedian,...

As Andrew Garfield opens up about the death of his late mother, he’s praising his The Eyes of Tammy Faye family for helping him through the loss.
The 2x Oscar nominee recently said he was “really very grateful” for his time on the 2021 Tammy Faye Bakker biopic with co-star Jessica Chastain, who ultimately helped him get home to be with his mother Lynn in her final days before dying of pancreatic cancer.
“What was amazing was that [Searchlight Pictures‘ David Greenbaum] and Jessica rearranged the schedule last-minute — put filming on hold [in North Carolina] for a few days so that I could go back [to England] and be with my mom for 10 days,” Garfield told People.
Noting that he and Chastain would frequent the Bakkers’ former Christian theme park Heritage USA together while filming, Garfield added, “We would have deep conversations, because we were both getting to know each other as people. I’m really very...

Season 2 of Apple TV+’s hit series Palm Royale has seemingly entered production, and we did some digging into the cast list.
After premiering earlier this year, the show was met with warm reviews, critical acclaim and multiple nominations at the 2024 Emmy Awards.
It was renewed for a second season in June, and series creator Abe Sylvia told Collider that it was expected to enter production “at the end of September” after spending seven months working on the script.
While we haven’t gotten many details since, we do know that three stars are expected to return for the new season. At least two more have expressed interest in staging comebacks.
Abe also teased “a few very exciting guest opportunities.”
“Nothing is finalized. We’re still making our way through scripts, but we do have our ideal archetypes that we’re tailoring roles for,” he said. “We’re just getting into that now.

As Carol Burnett makes Emmy Awards history this weekend, Abe Sylvia is reflecting on his collaboration with the comedy legend.
The Palm Royale creator explained that he had the “biggest imposter syndrome” after Burnett came to be cast as wealthy comatose matriarch Norma Dellacorte in his Apple TV+ series, which was renewed for a second season back in June.
“I didn’t have anyone in mind. But we have a fantastic casting director, Kerry Barden, and he really encouraged us to shoot for the moon,” he recalled to Collider. “It was his idea to go after Carol Burnett for Norma. I said, ‘I don’t know. She’s in a coma. Does that feel too small?’ And he was like, ‘Let’s just ask. There’s no hurt in asking.’ And when Carol said yes, I went into my office and cried with the biggest imposter syndrome. I was like,...

For Palm Royale makeup and hair department heads Tricia Sawyer and Karen Bartek, Slim Aarons’ 1960s photography served as the biggest inspiration for nailing the looks of a cast that includes Kristen Wiig, Allison Janney, Laura Dern, Carol Burnett, Ricky Martin and Leslie Bibb.
“Aarons really captured the essence of Palm Beach in that time period,” Sawyer tells THR. “He has several books that I referred to daily. There are also some videos online of Palm Beach society women of the period that were helpful.”

The creative minds behind some of this year’s Emmy-nominated comedy series give insight into the process and share secrets behind their highly lauded seasons.
Abbott Elementary
In Abbott Elementary’s third season, series creator Quinta Brunson and her writers room were handed a challenge: Tell a thorough, engrossing story in eight fewer episodes than usual. The ABC comedy, which typically runs 22 half-hour blocks, was truncated as a result of the writers and actors strikes (the February premiere timing also conflicted with the series’ history of following the school year in real time). “I knew right away I didn’t want to hold anything for season four, and that I wanted to protect the finale ending we had planned,” says Brunson. She used the opportunity to try out a time jump for the first time — among other creative pivots — and the result garnered Abbott nine Emmy nominations, including outstanding comedy series.

Carol Burnett certainly doesn’t need any more accolades to confirm her legendary status: In a career that has spanned more than six decades, she became a household name thanks to the groundbreaking Carol Burnett Show (1967-78), and has shined on major mediums from Broadway to films. She’s earned Emmys, Golden Globes, a Tony and a Grammy, with only an Academy Award missing from her mantel. But Burnett isn’t pining to get Egot status. “I don’t think movies are my deal,” Burnett says plainly when asked about it. But Palm Royale, Abe Sylvia’s comedy series about a woman infiltrating Palm Beach’s high society, was very much her deal, especially when she heard Kristen Wiig would play the lead character. Burnett, Emmy nominated for her supporting role in the series, talks to THR about playing Norma Dellacorte, making new girlfriends on the show and her lucky Wordle wins.

The Season 1 finale of Apple TV+s Palm Royale was nothing short of explosive and intriguing with a case of secret identity, a presidential assassination plot, and a grandiose Beach Ball all unfolding in the cliffhanger-filled finale. We know that Season 2 is on the way, but with so much up in the air, fans are likely wondering how in the world the creative team will not just tie everything together but continue to deliver an unbelievably interesting storyline to audiences. Luckily, the shows creator, Abe Sylvia, recently sat down with Colliders Christina Radish to chat about that off-the-rails finale, whats to come from future seasons, and what other dynamite performers we can expect to see joining an already star-studded cast.

Abe Sylvia, the creator of Apple TV+’s Palm Royale, had for years been trying to make a show that takes place in Palm Beach, and he finally cracked it with the Kristen Wiig-led comedy series about a woman who strives, and will do anything, to be a part of high society in the exclusive community. The writing, the star-studded cast (including Carol Burnett, Allison Janney, Laura Dern and Ricky Martin) and the vibrant production and costume design all helped the show resonate with Academy voters, who awarded the series 10 Emmy nominations, including best comedy.

Some actors are so good they can consistently draw attention without even trying. But Carol Burnett might be the only living legend who can literally steal scenes in her sleep. The 91-year-old actor just received her 23rd Primetime Emmy nomination for her supporting work in the satirical comedy “Palm Royale” — for playing a character who spends a good part of the season in a coma.
Created by Abe Sylvia and set in 1969, “Palm Royale” casts Burnett as Norma Dellacorte, a beloved and feared grand dame of Florida society who has been bedridden since a pulmonary episode. Her caretaker becomes Maxine Simmons-Dellacorte (played by fellow Emmy nominee Kristen Wiig), the wife of Norma’s nephew, but can only communicate her disdain through a series or groans and gibberish. Yet Burnett makes her limited capacities a master class in acting.
While that might sound difficult, Burnett dismisses such ideas. “It wasn’t a challenge at all,...

It was a surprise to many of her admiring fans that the legendary Carol Burnett was not already immortalized with her handprints in the iconic Hollywood cement. That fact finally changed on Thursday as she was surrounded by friends, co-stars and family at a brief ceremony outside of the Tcl Chinese Theater.
Before cementing herself for decades of tourists to visit, she said, “I grew up just a few blocks from here, Yucca and Wilcox. It was a block north of Hollywood Boulevard. And when I was a little girl, I can’t begin to count the times my grandmother and I would walk up her to Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Betty Grable was one of my favorites, and I remember bending down and putting my hands on her handprints, never dreaming that someday I’d be putting my hands here 80 years later.”

“Palm Royale” showrunner Abe Sylvia relied on his “guru” Joni Mitchell (via her song “People’s Parties”) when figuring out the tone for his Apple TV+ comedy: “Laughing and crying are the same release.”

Sylvia joined “Hacks” co-creator Jen Statsky, “Krapopolis” creator Dan Harmon, “Young Sheldon” exec producer Steve Holland, “What We Do in the Shadows” writer Jake Bender, “Diarra From Detroit” creator/star Diarra Kilpatrick and “Loot” co-creator Alan Yang on a panel exploring comedy writing on Thursday night during Variety‘s A Night in the Writers’ Room. Receiving the IndieWire Honors Vanguard Award at Citizen News on June 6, Carol Burnett reflected on her years spent as a teenage reporter. The comedy legend further praised journalists as “essential” to the entertainment industry and described the evening as a “full circle” moment in her illustrious career. (Watch her interview on our red carpet above.)
“This actually happens to be the neighborhood I grew up in just a few blocks from here,” Burnett said in her speech. “At one point, I was editor of my Hollywood High School newspaper and one of my assignments was to interview the editor of the Hollywood Citizen News. That was in this building.”
Speaking to IndieWire in May, the actress said that in addition to interviewing Citizen News editor Lowell E. Redelings — who Innovation Award winner John Mulaney would later accuse of Communism during his predictably hilarious acceptance speech — she narrowly missed a chance to speak with Lana Turner.

Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale” is packed heels to highlights with legendary actresses, but Carol Burnett wants to add at least one more when they’re back for Season 2.
In an exclusive interview ahead of the 2024 IndieWire Honors — which took place on June 6 at Citizen News in Hollywood and saw the beloved comedienne winning the Vanguard Award for a lifetime of achievements in television — Burnett revealed that her old scene partner Vicki Lawrence not only watched but “loved” creator Abe Sylvia’s sparkling ‘60s satire about well-to-do Palm Beach.
“I wish they could find something for [Vicki] on the show,” said Burnett, who guest starred as the larger-than-life Norma Dellacorte in “Palm Royale” Season 1. “I’m going to ask Abe if there’s a part that might come up because that would be fun to have Vicki on. That would really be something. And not just a mercy booking. That’s not what I mean.

Nathan Lane came out of the closet to his mother and two brothers at age 21, and says he marched in Pride parades as far back as the late 1970s. But it wasn’t until he started playing gay roles and saw his career explode thanks to Mike Nichols’ 1996 film The Birdcage that he experienced rampant speculation about his sexuality.
“I certainly wish I had been braver at the time,” Lane said while accepting a career achievement trophy during the LGBTQ+ Celebration of Cinema & Television at Fairmont Century Plaza on Friday. “Like when Oprah Winfrey on her show asked me why I was so good at all that girly stuff in The Birdcage. If I could go back in time, the answer I wish I had given is: The reason I’m good at all that stuff is because I’m a wonderful actor but if you’re asking me if I’m gay,...

“Loot” and “Pose” star Michaela Jaé Rodriguez says while growing up, the Logo dramedy series “Noah’s Arc,” which followed the lives and relationships of four gay men in Los Angeles, was one of the first shows she saw that made her feel represented.

Apple TV+ wants to keep the caftans coming and has ordered up a second season of “Palm Royale,” the late ‘60s Florida-set society comedy starring Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Alison Janney, Josh Lucas, Ricky Martin, Leslie Bibb, Bruce Dern, and the nonagenarian Carol Burnett.
With brutal competition for streaming comedies right now, Apple’s Matt Cherniss was eager to boast about the series breaking through with audiences. “‘Palm Royale’ has delighted global audiences and we are thrilled that viewers will have the opportunity to spend more time with this highly entertaining, iconic cast, from Kristen Wiig to the incomparable Carol Burnett,” he said in a statement.

“Palm Royale” has been renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV+, Variety has learned.

Loosely based on Juliet McDaniel’s novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie and produced by Apple Studios, Palm Royale is a true underdog story that follows Maxine Simmons (Wiig) in 1969 as she endeavors to break into Palm Beach high society. A nurse’s shift is never done. Almost a decade after the original series concluded its seven season run, Edie Falco has signed on to reprise her role in a ‘Nurse Jackie’ sequel series.
Variety reported that the project, which is being produced by Lionsgate and currently in development at Amazon MGM Studio, is set for a streaming release at Prime Video.
The series will continue to follow Falco’s character, an emergency room nurse who struggles with addiction to drugs. Last we saw her, she had snorted more heroin than her body could carry and ended up passing out at the hospital.

The Nurse Jackie sequel show with Edie Falco has moved from Showtime to Prime Video, promising a fresh start for the beloved character. Showtime's minimization of original content makes the move to Prime Video a strategic choice for the show's revival. The sequel could have the potential to surpass the original show, with Falco's star power and Prime Video's support.
The planned Nurse Jackie sequel show, with original star Edie Falco, has received a major development update. The hit comedy-drama, which became Falco's first leading role post-Sopranos, debuted on Showtime in June 2009, running for seven seasons and 80 episodes, before concluding in June 2015. Nurse Jackie received critical acclaim during its run, and is widely regarded as one of Falco's best television roles, having won her fourth Primetime Emmy Award for her performance. Following the show's conclusion, there was talk of a Nurse Jackie season 8 renewal, with a sequel show entering development in early 2023.

Palm Royale got a lot of mileage out of its impressive cast, notably the women. But Kristen Wiig, Allison Janney, Laura Dern and even the legendary Carol Burnett needed help to create the titular Palm Beach private club and 1960s-set high society that Maxine Dellacorte Simmons (Wiig) spends the first season trying to infiltrate. That shared assignment fell to a collaborative group including creator and showrunner Abe Sylvia, director and producer Tate Taylor, set decorator Ellen Reede and composer Jeff Toyne. With 10 episodes of the lush Apple TV+ comedy in the books, that foursome joined Wiig, also a producer, and supporting player Josh Lucas (Maxine’s complicated husband, Douglas) for a discussion about the lengths they went to in crafting the show — breaking and entering, whale calls and all.

Apple TV+ has a lush new series, “Palm Royale,” that is as beautiful to watch as its all-star cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Laura Dern. Abe Sylvia adapted Juliet McDaniel‘s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” This period piece set in 1969. is centered on Wiig as an outsider trying to gain a place in Palm Beach’s high society. The vistas are all pretty to look at while the petty politicking keeps things zipping along. Critics have hailed this clever comedy.
André Hereford (Metro Weekly) noted: “‘Palm Royale’ revs up the comedy slowly but ultimately hits cruising speed as a gleefully campy spin on nighttime soaps.”
Joey Moser (Awards Daily) observed: “Supported by a game, limber cast, ‘Palm Royale’ is a cheeky, gorgeous tale of ambition and identity led by a never-better Wiig.”

Lili Loofbourow (Washington Post) declared: “At its best, when it leans...

On Saturday, May 11, Apple TV+ continued the “Think Apple TV+ Emmy House” with an official Television Academy event at the Hollywood Athletic Club in Los Angeles on behalf of the comedy series “Palm Royale.” Gold Derby associate editor Latasha Ford was there to chat with stars Carol Burnett, Bruce Dern, Leslie Bibb, Josh Lucas and Amber Chardae Robinson, as well as executive producer, director and showrunner Abe Sylvia and executive producer/director Tate Taylor. Watch the exclusive red carpet interviews above.
“Palm Royale” is a true underdog story that follows Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig) as she endeavors to break into Palm Beach high society. As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, “Palm Royale” asks the same question that still baffles us today: “How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?” Set during the powder keg year...

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
Ten weeks deep and “Palm Royale” showrunner Abe Sylvia is still processing the success of his shimmering spring TV hit.
“I certainly live in an echo chamber on social media, so I’m seeing lots of ways in which it infiltrated culture,” the executive producer told IndieWire. “But I felt like we really crossed over when I saw that Ramona Singer from ‘Real Housewives’ was dressed for a ‘Palm Royale’-themed cocktail party. That’s when I went, ‘Uh-oh, something has changed here. Something has shifted.'”

[This story contains mild spoilers from episode nine of Palm Royale.]
Tate Taylor might be the male version of Palm Royale’s Maxine Dellacorte-Simmons.
The executive producer and director behind the Kristen Wiig-starring comedy had his own experience trying to get into an exclusive Palm Beach club during pre-production on the Apple TV+ series. And just like the Tennessee debutante found out in the season premiere, wealthy Florida socialites don’t take too kindly to trespassers.
“I snuck in a side door like Maxine, got a great glimpse of the club, was spotted by security, and was kicked out. So I left Palm Beach feeling like a loser and trash,” Taylor recalls to The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below. “I said, ‘Okay, this is a very real place.'”
The exclusivity of the Palm Beach community is why filming for Palm Royale had to take place in Los Angeles, where a mix of set locations and sound...

In the mid-20th century, Slim Aarons had one goal: to photograph “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.” Decades later the New Englander’s photographs of celebrities, royalty, and high society still capture an aspirational slice of life, with images that draw you in and make you wonder what’s happening just beyond the edge.
That escapism and timelessness were key elements in creating the look of Palm Royale. Creator Abe Sylvia had always wanted to do a series inspired by the iconic photographer’s work, and the story of an outsider clawing her way into Palm Beach high society and its Shiny Sheet newspaper pages was the perfect fit.
