Filmart: Pccw Media Unveils ‘White Lotus’-like Asian Drama Series ‘The Season’

Hong Kong’s Pccw Media and Sk Global, the company behind Crazy Rich Asians and Delhi Crime, have teamed up for the big-budget Hong Kong-set drama series The Season.

The show is created and executive produced by writer and producer Yalun Tu, known for his work on NCIS: Hawaii and Wu Assassins. Chilean filmmaker Marialy Rivas (The Jetty) serves as lead director and executive producer.

The series has a buzzy, White Lotus-like premise set amidst Hong Kong high society.

The official logline reads: “Set against the opulence and striking contrasts of Hong Kong, The Season follows a privileged group of friends gathering for a summer of sun-drenched luxury as boating season begins. What starts as a glamorous escape soon spirals into a web of deception, power struggles, and life-altering consequences.”

Hong Kong’s Pccw Media Teams With ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Producer Sk Global for Drama Series ‘The Season’

Hong Kong’s Pccw Media is linking up with independent film and TV studio Sk Global Entertainment (“Crazy Rich Asians”) to produce the drama series, “The Season.”

The six-part series is set in Hong Kong and tells of a group of friends gathering for a summer of fun in the sun as boating season begins but which spirals into a web of deception and power struggles. The show was unveiled at a special presentation at Hong Kong FilMart.

“We believe “The Season” is a story that will connect with audiences everywhere through the characters’ personal journeys, relationships and conflicts at times,” said Janice Lee, managing director of Pccw Media Group and CEO of Viu, the company’s multi-territory video streamer.

Pccw Media and Crazy Rich Asians producer Sk Global are joining forces on Hong Kong-set premium series The Season, created and executive produced by Yalun Tu.

The English-language series features an ensemble cast of international talent including Jessie Mei Li (Shadow And Bone), award-winning Hong Kong actress Karena Lam, Justin Chien (The Brothers Sun), Yvonne Chapman (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Celina Jade (Wolf Warrior 2) and Toby Stephens (Percy Jackson And The Olympians).

Chilean director Marialy Rivas (The Jetty) serves as the show’s lead director and executive producer. Agatha Lo will executive produce for Pccw Media and Chloe Dan, Matt Aragachi and Dylan Tarason for Sk Global, with Aaron Shershow (Expats) as producer. Production is expected to start in Hong Kong soon.

Sk Global Bolsters Leadership, Promotes Matt Aragachi to President (Exclusive)

Sk Global, the producer behind Anyone But You, Crazy Rich Asians and Moneyball, has made changes to its C-suite, unveiling two key hires and promoting two executives.

Matt Aragachi, who joined the Los Angeles-based firm in 2021 as chief financial officer, has been promoted to president and will oversee the studio’s film, TV and unscripted divisions, the company said Friday. The exec’s résumé includes finance and exec roles at AlphaSights and Guidepoint as well as longer runs at 21st Century Fox and at NBCUniversal Media earlier in his career.

Beth Bednarski, who had served as chief financial officer of Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment, was hired in October to succeed Aragachi as CFO at Sk Global. The banner also hired Dylan Tarason, formerly of Media Res and Constantin Film, as its evp, head of physical production for features and TV.

‘Resident Evil’ Origin Story Film in the Works With Kaya Scodelario and Hannah John-Kamen to Star

The “Resident Evil” franchise is going back to the beginning, as Constantin Film announced Tuesday that it is in pre-production on an origin story and reboot of the video game and film franchise. The studio has already set Kaya Scodelario, Hannah John-Kamen and Robbie Amell to star.

Johannes Roberts (“47 Meters Down”) is directing and writing the origin story, simply titled “Resident Evil,” that will travel to Raccoon City in 1998 where a zombie apocalypse first spread as a result of a deadly virus and bioweapon unleashed by the Umbrella Corporation. The director says that the new film will be based largely on the first two video games in the franchise.

“The Maze Runner” star Scodelario will play Claire Redfield in the new “Resident Evil,” John-Kamen will play Jill Valentine, and Amell will play Chris Redfield. Also attached to star are Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia as Leon S.

Constantin starts pre-production on ‘Resident Evil’ origins story, announces cast

Metropolitan to release in France.

Pre-production has begun on Constantin Films’ Resident Evil origins story that Screen Gems will release theatrically sometime in 2021, with Metropolitan handling France and Sony handling the bulk of international markets.

Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) is directing from his screenplay, which takes place one night in the fictitious Raccoon City in 1998 and explores the secrets of Spenser Mansion.

Constantin will distribute the film in German-speaking territories and has been a founding producer and partner on the horror video game adaptation. The previous six Resident Evil films starring Milla Jovovich and directed mostly by Paul W.S. Anderson have grossed around $1.2bn worldwide.

Disney+ has announced that it is bringing a new adaptation of Black Beauty to the streaming service later this year. The movie serves as a contemporary adaptation of Anna Sewell's classic 19th-century novel of the same name.
