At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.
The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.
This marks a major change for Sundance, and a renewed commitment to independent television. While Sundance has featured TV programming since the premiere of “Top of the Lake” in...

The Slamdance Film Festival announced today their narrative and documentary feature film competition for its 24th Festival edition, taking place January 19-25, 2018 in Park City. Established in 1995 by a group of filmmakers whose work had been rejected by the Sundance Film Festival, Slamdance is dedicated to fostering a community for independent emerging artists, fashioning itself “the premiere film festival by filmmakers, for filmmakers.”
The feature competition includes 16 premieres, mostly produced in the U.S. All competition films are feature length directorial debuts with budgets of less than $1 million Usd, and without Us distribution. In addition, the festival announced a new partnership with alumni Anthony and Joe Russo (“Captain America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Infinity War”) to establish the inaugural Russo Fellowship award. Every participating filmmaker will be eligible for a $25,000 cash prize and mentorship from the Russos in the development of the winner’s next project at the brothers’ Los Angeles studio.

The first season of Twin Peaks remains one of the most satisfying viewing experiences of my life. When the 90-minute pilot debuted on ABC on April 8, 1990, just two months shy of my high school graduation, I was instantly slayed. It was like the TV gods took all of my favorite things — a compelling, suspenseful murder mystery, mountain-high emotional stakes, rich characters, measured quirkiness — and rolled them into one series.

Last Week’S Review: Brotherly Love Goes Bad as Danger Mounts in the Season 3 Premiere
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Better Call Saul” Season 3, Episode 2, “Witness.”]
Case Summary
On the surface, things initially look good for fledging law practice Wexler-McGill — at the very least, they’ve got a pip of a new assistant and fancy new wall art. However, there’s danger lurking thanks to a tip-off from Ernie about Chuck’s recording of Jimmy’s confession. Kim has a legal strategy mapped out to take care of things, but when Jimmy loses his temper and decides to take matters into his own hands, the results are explosive.
Meanwhile, Mike’s efforts to figure out who’s been tracking him lead to everyone’s favorite chicken joint: Los Pollos Hermanos, where some very familiar faces lie in wait. The episode ends with Mike getting a call — a call which seems likely to change his life.

Season 3 of “Better Call Saul” is quickly heading into “Breaking Bad” territory by including past characters. Of course, everyone’s favorite chicken/meth-peddling villain Gus Fring has been slated to appear for some time now, but another familiar face is teased in this exclusive clip from next week’s episode.
In the clip which you can watch below, Jimmy, now running his own law practice alongside Kim, seemingly jumps the gun on a new hire. Not one to waste any time, Jimmy decides to hire the very first applicant of their new law firm, much to the annoyance of Kim.
While the character isn’t named, they are “more than adequate,” according to Jimmy who realizes the potential of someone who “worked at the Dmv” which is “like the fifth circle of hell.”

To the cadre of fans who have followed South Korean director Hong Sang-soo’s work over the years, he’s best-known for repeating different versions of the same formula: Portraits of chatty, neurotic creative types, usually filmmakers and actors, all of whom usually wind up drinking a lot of Soju and arguing through their problems with alternately funny and insightful results.
More recently, Hong has also been known as one half of a marriage scandal that dominated Korean tabloids more than any of his movies. While the media speculated, the peripatetic filmmaker quietly stuck to his one-film-a-year pace while remaining silent on the topic. Now, he has provided a response in the best terms at his disposal — with a movie. “On the Beach at Night Alone” is a fascinating sublimation of autobiography into Hong’s precise creative terms, a bittersweet character study as poignant, witty and deceptively slight as much...

Hong Sang-Soo’s ‘Yourself And Yours’ Is A Delightfully Druken Riff On Abbas Kiarostami — Nyff Review
For those familiar with the films of Hong Sang-soo, there’s really only one thing you need to know: The new one is pretty major, and not just because they drink beer this time instead of the usual soju. For those who haven’t yet been introduced to this singularly idiosyncratic Korean auteur, “Yourself and Yours” is as good a place to start as any.
But first, a quick primer: Hong Sang-soo movies have never been about what happens. Some of them are about what happened, some of them are about what could have happened, and — increasingly — some of them are about the difference between the two. Of course, the joke with Hong is that his movies are pretty much indistinguishable, these rueful, belligerently drunken comedies so similar that watching any two of them in succession is like doing one of those cartoon puzzles where you have to spot the...

Kim McGuire, a New Orleans native whose film career wasn’t long, but was certainly memorable, has died. She was admitted to a Florida hospital on Tuesday with pneumonia; she did not respond to treatment, and died yesterday of cardiac arrest. Her husband, TV graphic and sound designer Gene Piotrowsky, broke the news on Twitter, saying, “Today is a very sad day. Kim “hatchet face” McGuire my best friend, and the love of my life [passed] away this afternoon. I love you so much.” She was 60.
As Piotrowsky mentioned in his tweet, McGuire was most famous for her role in John Waters’ Cry-Baby, where she dramatically exaggerated her features with makeup to play Mona “Hatchet-Face” Malnorowski, a tough-as-nails girl gang member who The New York Times described as “a hideously contorted floozy” in its review of the film. McGuire's husband, Gene Piotrowsky, confirmed her death to The Associated Press on Thursday. Piotrowsky said she died Wednesday at a Naples, Florida, hospital of complications from pneumonia. The Toronto International Film Festival is mere weeks from kicking off, yet the annual fall fest is showing zero sign of slowing down when it comes to announcing the titles that will round out this year’s event. Today’s announcement brings with it a number of Cannes favorites, including Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or-winning “I, Daniel Blake,” Olivier Assayas’ divisive Kristen Stewart-starring “Personal Shopper” and Pedro Almodovar’s “Julieta.”

As we wind down towards the end of the summer, one can’t help but have their minds wander towards what’s next, cinematically speaking. Namely, the fall festival season, which will soon be upon us. We’ve already had the Venice Film Festival announce their lineup, as well as most of the titles playing at the Toronto International Film Festival, but earlier today the New York Film Festival also announced what was playing at their shindig. Now, we mostly know the lay of the festival landscape, and it’s looking very exciting, if I do say so myself. The next few months can’t come soon enough… Below you will see what the Toronto International Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, and New York Film Festival have announced to date as their entries. Each fest has something interesting and exclusive to offer, while there is some crossover to be found as well.

Is there a best picture winner in the bunch? The Venice Film Festival has unveiled its 2016 lineup, including both in competition and out of competition offerings, and with the festival’s strong track record of debuting recent best picture winners — from “Spotlight” to “Birdman” — there might be another big winner among the slate’s ranks.
As had been previously announced, the festival will open with Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land,” which will later hit Toronto (and, presumably, also Telluride). The festival will close with Antoine Fuqua’s “The Magnificent Seven,” which kicks off its own festival run days earlier, when it will open Tiff.

Where They From: Ficarra & Requa and the Privileged Perspective
Cinematic depictions of the ongoing conflict(s) in the Middle East continue to be a touchy subject, particularly for those English language illustrations daring to convey a certain satirical element involving the U.S. presence there. While pleasing everyone is never a possibility, there are several elements about Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot which could have been easily remedied to avoid inarguable ire, namely with its severely miscast supporting actors. Based on the 2011 memoirs of journalist Kim Barker, The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan, this is provocative subject matter made all the more alluring by the self-aware talents of Tina Fey doing her best to subvert our expectations of a white, privileged perspective. Overall, the end product has too many glaring demerits to warrant praise, but as a showcase for a well-rounded serious...
