- Originally went to the University of Virginia to study to be a lawyer. A chance audition for a part in "A Raisin In the Sun" changed his direction. He ultimately got his master's degree in drama from New York University in 1996.

- Married Aonika Laurent in New Orleans on April 22, 2006. Originally planned for the Fall of 2005 in New Orleans, but postponed due to Hurricane Katrina.
- Both of his parents are from Guyana.
- His wife Aonika Laurent gave birth to their first child, a daughter Lola Jolie Thomas, at 7:29 pm on Friday, May 16th 2008, weighing in at 7 lbs.
- He and his wife Aonika Laurent had their son Luc Laurent Thomas born June 9, 2010.
