Modern horror visionary, Robert Eggers is on a roll. Not only did Focus Features just announce Eggers' next project, Werwulf, but now a rumor about another exciting project for the Nosferatu director is gaining even more traction. While Focus Features might want to keep the star director to itself, it looks like it'll have to share pretty soon.
According to Deadline, Eggers has closed a deal with TriStar Pictures to write and direct a new Labyrinth story, a rumored sequel to the Jim Henson 1986 musical film featuring David Bowie in the role of a lifetime. Reportedly, Eggers is writing the script for the Labyrinth sequel with his The Northman and Werwulf partner, Sjón, while Chris and Eleanor Columbus will produce with Lisa Henson and executive producer Brian Henson, which makes for a confidence-boosting team behind the rumored project.

Robert Eggers is sticking with monster movies for his next project following the success of Nosferatu. After the news was announced, Eggers addressed why a Labyrinth movie won't be his next film as was recently rumored.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Eggers was teaming back up with Focus Features to direct Werwulf, a werewolf story. Meanwhile, he was also asked by ComicBook about the rumors that he was setting up a Labyrinth film. Eggers did not outright deny the rumors, nothing that he has a "ton of things in development." This might even suggest that there's some truth to the reports, but that the reboot is just one of multiple potential projects Eggers has his sights on. The director then clarified that, after Nosferatu, he wanted to tell an "original" story for his next film.

Robert Eggers’ incredible reimagining of Nosferatu has put him on the radar of many studios who want the mostly independent director to work with them on some big projects. A new one being touted by Hollywood rumormonger Jeff Sneider is that Eggers has already chosen a new project, taking on Sony’s long-gestating reboot of the classic Jim Henson fantasy, Labyrinth.
Let’s say from the off that this is only a rumor, and can be taken with a large pinch of salt and any other seasoning you care to throw at it. For one thing, Brian Henson – son of Muppet creator Jim, and one of Labyrinth’s original performers – claimed multiple times in the last year that the “very exciting” sequel/reboot of the cult classic fantasy was being worked on at the beginning of the year. Second, Eggers' run of successful movies, which include The Lighthouse and The Witch,...

Filmmaker Robert Eggers has found success with Nosferatu, his new film inspired by the classic vampire movie. According to a new report, he is now setting his sights on another celebrated film from the past to reboot.
According to movie scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider, Eggers has partnered up with Sony and The Jim Henson Company to reboot the 1986 film Labyrinth. In recent years, there have been rumblings about a new Labyrinth movie happening, though previous attempts always fizzled out in development hell. The reported addition of Eggers to the new Labyrinth project could be what gives the reboot the momentum it needs to finally get moving, given how many critics have been calling the new Nosferatu one of the best films of 2024.

Children's live-action fantasy movies are some of the most popular within the genre among audiences of all ages. Just because a film is meant for kids doesn't mean it won't connect with adults or prove to be a classic in the decades to come. Darker themes and elements are a key part of any children's story, and many of these films are so highly rated and well remembered because they take kids and their opinions seriously. Incorporating scary moments and more mature themes within a safe story is a great way to connect with younger audiences and convey deeper messages.
Despite it being considered a more kid-friendly genre, there are plenty of animated movies that are pretty dark, demonstrating how versatile the medium is. Similarly, live-action can prove to be just as magical and immersive as animation, creating innovative sets and creatures with practical movie sets that aren't CGI. While...

Three beloved Muppet characters reunited Sept. 24 for a video celebrating what would have been Jim Hensons 88th birthday. The Jim Henson Company posted a video on YouTube featuring Gobo Fraggle of Fraggle Rock, Kermit the Frog of The Muppet Show and Sesame Street, and Oscar the Grouch of Sesame Street commemorating the birthday of the legendary Muppet creator.
The video, which runs about a minute and a half, starts off with Gobo popping out of a trash can saying hed never traveled through a Fraggle cave like that before. After hopping out of the trashcan, he exclaims that the place hes arrived at is amazing and quickly asks Kermit if he wants to explore outer space with him.

Jennifer Connelly fondly remembers her iconic role in Labyrinth due to the practical effects and craftsmanship of the movie. Jim Henson, considered a visionary, created a timeless sense of wonder in Labyrinth with unique puppets and sets. Jim Henson, who passed before Labyrinth's cult success, would have been thrilled by its impact on subsequent generations.
Labyrinth was Jennifer Connellys introduction to a long and highly-acclaimed career in Hollywood, and the actress still looks back on the movie with fondness. Directed by Jim Henson, featuring an array of weird and wonderful puppet creations and fantastical sets, and an iconic performance by David Bowie, the movie defied its initial lackluster release to become a cult classic and is about to earn a long-awaited sequel.

Jim Henson would be thrilled to see Labyrinth become a cult classic, despite its initial box office failure. Critics' dislike of the film led to its poor theatrical performance and subsequent removal from theaters. Labyrinth has gained popularity over the years and continues to attract new viewers, making it Jim Henson's most valuable and successful project.
Jim Henson passed away just four years after Labyrinth was released, never really getting to see the film gain a massive audience and solidify its spot as a cult classic. Best known for creating the Muppets and Fraggle Rock, Henson went on to helm 1982's The Dark Crystal and 1986's Labyrinth. While The Dark Crystal made a profit at the box office, Labyrinth banked $12.7 million, just a bit over its $25 million budget.

Some of the best fantasy movies in cinema history were based on books, such as The Princess Bride and The NeverEnding Story. However, many great fantasy movies are original works or inspired by other media, like Labyrinth and Dragonheart. These movies offer creative and visually stunning experiences, with fantastic performances and intriguing storylines.
Fantasy is a genre typically associated with literature, whether it be dark adult novels, children's books, or otherwise, but not all stories in fantasy movies started life as books. Some of the best movies in fantasy cinema history are based on the written word. The Princess Bride, The NeverEnding Story, The Last Unicorn, and Bedknobs and Broomsticks are just some examples of fantasy adventures that were books before they were movies.

The second of two films shown back-to-back at Starburst Film Festival that dealt with the loss of a child and the breakdown in a relationship. This particular film comes from what I personally consider the home of good horror, Canada, and benefits from – thankfully – a much clearer vision than Torment.
The Child Remains tells the story of an expectant couple’s intimate weekend… A weekend which turns to terror when they discover their secluded country inn is a haunted maternity home where unwanted infants and mothers were murdered. Apparently inspired by the true story of the infamous ‘Butterbox Babies’, a creepy folklore tale from Nova Scotia that – like many of these macabre stories – has some basis in fact, after all pretty much ever country has scandalous rumours about mistreatment in all kinds of care homes,...

Tri-Star has brought on Don't Breathe director Fede Alvarez to direct their Labyrinth sequel, while also setting writer Jay Basu (Monsters: Dark Continent) to write the script. This project will not head into production right away though, with both the director and writer first tackling Sony's The Girl in the Spider's Web movie, which begins filming this fall. Labyrinth 2 is moving forward after that project. This new report also re-confirms that this project is not a Labyrinth reboot.
Back in January 2016, it was reported that Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman has come aboard to write the script for a Labyrinth reboot, which was particularly troubling to many fans since the news came just days after original Labyrinth star David Bowie passed away. Nicole Perlman then took to social media to reveal that she had actually been in talks with the Jim Henson company in late 2014, confirming that she isn't rebooting the original movie,...

On the heels of Telefilm Canada’s pledge on November 11 that half of its projects will be directed or written by women in a move to close the industry gender gap by 2020, the Whistler Film Festival (Nov 30 — Dec 4) was proud to present an unprecedented number of female focused films, talent, events and awards throughout its 2016 programs.
The festival featured a record 31 (36%) films all directed by women (including 15 feature films out of 50 and 16 short films out of 36). Wff also has 38 (58%) female filmmakers out of the 66 Canadian artists confirmed to date participating in 11 talent programs — including 22 directors, 6 producers, 3 screenwriters, 2 actors, and 5 musicians/bands in the Music Showcase. Add this to the talent confirmed to attend the festival in support of their films and projects, including award winning director and screenwriter Deepa Mehta (An Anatomy Of Violence), director Ingrid Veninger (Hockey Night), director Kirsten Carthew (The Sun At Midnight) and director Martine Blue...

Last week, we reported that Tri-Star and The Jim Henson Company are moving forward with a reboot of the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. The studios brought on Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman to write the script, although no story details were given at that time. Over the weekend, the screenwriter took to her Twitter page to clear the air on this new version of Labyrinth, which she says is not a reboot, but rather a "continuation." Take a look at her statement below.
"Not 'rebooting' anything, guys. Henson Co & I started talking in late 2014, so the timing of these rumors is so upsetting. I would never seek to profit from Bowie's death. Labyrinth is my favorite film from childhood, so I share your concerns that any continuation of the world be handled with love and respect."
The news of this new project came just days after the death of original Labyrinth star David Bowie.

Just days after the tragic passing of film and music icon David Bowie, one of the actor's most beloved movies is getting the remake treatment. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Tri-Star has closed a deal with The Jim Henson Company for a remake of Labyrinth. Guardians of the Galaxy screenwriter Nicole Perlman has signed on to write the screenplay, although no director is attached at this time.
The original Labyrinth centered on a young teenager (Jennifer Connelly) who is given just 13 hours to navigate a complicated maze in order to save her little brother, after her wish to take him away is granted by the Goblin King (David Bowie). The supporting cast was rounded out by Toby Froud, Shelley Thompson, Christopher Malcolm, Natalie Finland, Shari Weiser and Brian Henson. The original film only made $12 million at the box office and was plagued by negative reviews at the time, but it...

Buried within a Variety story about Billy Crystal joining Which Witch is news that The Jim Henson Company is developing sequels to Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal, along with Fraggle Rock: The Movie and another feature film based on the Emmett Otter character. However, a new story from Entertainment Weekly released shortly after that first news claims that the Labyrinth sequel is not actually in active development.
A source for The Jim Henson Company says that The Dark Crystal sequel and the Fraggle Rock: The Movie are currently being worked on, but there are no plans to, "reboot, revive, or make a sequel" to Labyrinth any time soon. The source described the "legacy title" as something that surfaces during most meetings, but nothing is currently in the works, despite Variety's contrasting report.
Fraggle Rock: The Movie has been in development for quite some time, with The Jim Henson Company partnering with New Regency.
